The Arctic Monkeys use both Twitter and Facebook accounts to connect with their fans. These social media

outlets are mainly used by the band to promote things such as album releases, tours, concert dates, music videos and

singles. The band does not use social media to interact with fans. The official Arctic Monkeys Twitter account as almost 900,000 followers, but they are following a single account.

Arctic Monkeys have become a very popular band on Tumblr. Although the band does not run its own Tumblr

site, there are a plethora of fan made sites. By simply using a hashtag such as #ArcticMonkeys or #AlexTurner fans on

Tumblr are able to connect with each other and share Arctic Monkeys posts, photos, gifs, news, videos. These fans

are also able to interact with each other by using the question box to ask a question or send a message. By following one of the fan blogs dedicated to this bang,

followers will have access to all band related posts shared by the blogger. They also have the option to share these

posts with their own followers.

After taking the time to examine the fans who interact with the band the most on their social media accounts, it has

become clear that the main audience for this band is students and young adults. Almost all of the tweets that the

band is mentioned in and all of the comments on their Facebook posts are made mostly by this audience

AUDIENCE

When it comes to engaging with their audience and posting about something other than their band or music, Arctic

Monkeys do exactly the opposite of what Debra Eckerling suggests in her “5 Tips.” The band only uses media to

promote themselves and does not reply to any of the posts or tweets they receive from their fans.

ECKERLING’S TIPS

SINGLE PROMO

Page 14: Arctic Monkeys

Eckerling suggest that bands should share meaningful posts on their social media accounts, but that is not true when it comes to the Arctic Monkeys. After going through all of their Facebook posts and tweets I have come to the

conclusion that these sites are not run by the band members, but by someone who is in charge of social media. Everything posted seems very formal and impersonal, and

the band is most often referred to as “they.”

MEANINGFUL POSTS?

One of the really cool things about this band is that they were one of the first bands to become famous because of

the internet and fan made sites. Most of the fame the band has encountered over the years is because of fans

spreading the word and sharing their love for the Arctic Monkeys with others.

”Arctic Monkeys were heralded as one of the first group of acts to come to the public attention via the Internet (fan-

based sites rather than from the band), with commentators suggesting they represented the possibility of a change in the way in which new bands are promoted and marketed”

LOVE LETTER

A love letter lead vocalist Alex Turner wrote for his girlfriend at the time, Alexa Chung, on Valentines Day.

I will be attending my first Arctic Monkey’s concert in the summer and I am very excited to see how they interact with

their fans. I have talked to fans who have been to these concerts in the past and have been informed that the band

members put on a great show and work very hard to engage the audience members. Fan on many different sites, such as Tumblr, agree and say that the Arctic Monkeys are fantastic in concert and are sure to please their fans every

time!

Looking at a bands reviews online is a great insight into how the band is going to be live. Reviews from

www.ticketmaster.com say nothing but amazing things about this band. Over all the years that the Arctic Monkeys have been performing, fans have nothing but great things

to say about their stage presence, performance and music

EARLY DAYS

Page 22: Arctic Monkeys

Although the band does not share a lot of content other than information about their music, they are consistent on their Facebook page, but not so much so on Twitter (they

only have 491 tweets). Facebook is constantly being updated with dates and upcoming events so that fans on

Facebook are always up to date with what’s going on with the band. The band also has an Instagram account

associated with them, but it is hard to be sure if this is a real account run by the band as there is no way to verify it like Twitter. If this is in fact a valid account, the band does not to a good job keeping up with it and sharing/posting for

their fans.

KEEPING UP WITH THE ARCTIC MONKEYS

Page 23: Arctic Monkeys

The Arctic Monkeys may not be the greatest at interacting with fans via social media, or constantly updating all of their accounts, their fans remain remain loyal and keep

coming back for the great music and performance that this amazing band is sure to provide them with.
