Can You Please Assist Brittany With Her Visual

Communication Assessment Task Year 12 student Brittany H is currently studying VCE Unit 3/4 Visual Communication and Design. As part of her current assessment task, Brittany requires some com-munity feedback through a survey which is attached to the end of this newsletter. It would be very much appreci-ated if as many families as possible could please assist Brittany with this request. Families are asked to contrib-ute to this survey and return it to the College before Thursday 8th June. Surveys can be returned to the College office or emailed to Brittany directly at [email protected]. College ‘Pineapple Chart’ College Curriculum Leader Mrs Clare implemented a ‘Pineapple Chart’ in the College staff room last week which in very basic terms, allows staff to identify lessons across the week in which they have a classroom open to all staff. This allows other College staff to come along to a particular lesson and see a fellow staff member taking an actual les-son. We are very keen for consistency in our teaching at East Loddon and the chance to learn from and support our peers in a very rewarding form of professional development. I thor-oughly enjoyed watching Ms Harrington conduct a ‘rock-band’ session with Year 6 earlier this week, and also im-mersed myself in a Year 9 humanities class based around World War 1 timelines with Mrs Clare. Today, I was also fortunate enough to be exposed to Mr Wilkinson teaching his VCE Mathematics class about ‘perpetuities’ and ‘annuities’. Ask any of the Year 12’s involved in this session and they are sure to be able to give you an accu-rate account of these terms. Student Attitudes to School Survey

As mentioned in previous editions of this newsletter, I

will be conducting Student Attitudes to School Surveys

with students between Year 4 and 12 over the course of

the next 2-3 weeks. As a College, we are very keen to

know what our students think about a range of aspects

regarding their schooling at East Loddon, and the survey

itself will assist us in ensuring that we continue to work

towards improving each child’s schooling experience. This survey is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training and will this Year be delivered online. Primary Maths Science Specialist Training Yesterday I attended the final training day for the Prima-ry Maths Science Specialist Program of which we have been a part of for the past 18 months. Our specialist coaches Miss Pilkington (Science) and Mr Kidman (Maths), spent the first three days of this week at training days in Melbourne and will now continue in their special-ist coaching positions until the end of the Year. The aim of this program is to build the capacity of staff and quali-ty of curriculum delivered to our primary classes, and the challenge for all schools involved in this program is to ensure that the positive benefits of such a program con-tinue within the College after the program has officially come to an end. Respectful Relationships ‘Partner School’ I am very excited to report that East Loddon P-12 College has very recently been accepted as a Partner School in the implementation of Respectful Relationships at the Col-lege. This program is mandatory for all Victorian Gov-ernment and Catholic schools as of this Year, and as a partner school we will receive assistance from a Leading School in the initial implementation of this program which is to begin in Term 3.

College staff member Ms Fiona Phelan will lead the im-

plementation of this program in Health classes from

Years 7 – 10 during Semester 2, and we look forward to

working together with our Leading School, along with

other local schools, to implement this very worthwhile

program for our students.

Youth Mental Health First Aid Course – Placements Finalised Shortly! In 2016, the College was fortunate enough to be able to host a Youth Mental Health First Aid Course, which was

well attended by the College community and spoken very highly of by participants. Once again this Year the Col-

lege will host a course, with Mr Greg Currie once again presenting. The course is tentatively planned for Thursday

27th and Friday 28th of July, with approx. 6 hours of course tuition on both days. The target audience for this course

is parents, community leaders and sporting club leaders, as well as education staff.

Please make contact with the College office to express an interest. Names are required asap in order to en-

sure a placement in the course.

For further information on this course please take a look at the following link - https://mhfa.com.au/courses/public/types/youth

I hope you have a great week.

ART NEWS

Art material call out – we are hoping to gather approximately 20 washed 3L milk bottles (with lids) for an upcoming project please!

With thanks, Samantha Heaslip

Literacy Hint

Visualisation- Talk is a powerful tool for helping a child visualise scenes, characters and objects. The adjectives

introduced and consolidated will also enrich your child’s writing. Writing is about creating/ painting images in the

reader’s mind. For example, without the presence of adjectives, the word ‘dog’ conjures up as many images as there

are readers. Good writing is where all reader visualise the same picture. Where ambiguity arises, ask your child to

describe what they think something may look like.

Handwriting- Key elements to neat handwriting include hand-eye and fine muscle co-ordination. You can assist

your child to develop co-ordination skills by encouraging them with construction activities whether it be:

commercial (eg Lego) or home based (playdough/ wood)

small piece jigsaws

finger stitch, weaving, sewing or knitting (There’s a challenge) or threading (beading)

dot to dots, tracing or colouring.

You can probably thing of a dozen other ideas to get the eyes and fingers working together and to refine muscle

movement in the fingers; the point is that you can intentionally set out by just encouraging some fun based experi-

ences.

Year 2/3 Science

The class are working on the topic ‘Melting Moments’ at the moment. A Homework booklet was ‘Run, run, runny’

was given out on Monday. Five students have already returned their booklets. These booklets are due on the June

19th. Well done to these students.

Badminton Report

Last Thursday some Year 7/8 students represented

East Loddon P-12 at Interschool Badminton. All

students participated in an extremely positive way;

trying their best and encouraging their teammates. As al-

ways, we were extremely competitive against the much

larger Bendigo schools. Especially impressive was the

way the Year 8 girls responded when they were an-

nounced the winners, only for a recount to have them

placed 2nd.

Year 7 Boys – 2nd Year 7 Girls – 2nd Year 8 Boys – 3rd

Year 8 Science

Students have recently completed a unit on Chemistry.

They have been looking at what chemical reactions are

and how they can be sped up. We completed this topic

with a test last

week, and I am

extremely im-

pressed with

how hard every-

one worked to

prepare and how

much students

were able to ap-

ply what we had

learnt. Great job!

Mr Cameron.

Year 7 Maths

The Year 7s have recently completed another Maths Path-

ways test, with Alicia H and Molly M both achieving the

highest growth rate in the class with a growth rate of

167% and Kaylah A reaching a new level! I was really

pleased that over half the class achieved a growth rate of

100% or more again, with a class average of 95% for this

test.

We’ve been looking at data in our other lessons, display-

ing data in charts and calculating the mean, median, mode

and range of the class’s results from fitness activities per-

formed with Mr Clayton. Students have a homework task

on data due on Monday 5th June 2017.

Mrs Johns. Year 8 Humanities Our Year 8’s have

been presenting

posters on differ-

ent environments.

They look amaz-

ing and are full of

interesting infor-

mation. If you get

a chance to see them, they will be displayed in the Year 8

classroom. Our geography unit will culminate this week

using geographical knowledge to create and describe a

complex overlay map, analyzing why our population lives

where they do in Australia. Our next Humanities unit will

be the Middle Ages.

The AGTV Poetry Competition Regional Final will now be held on Friday 21st July (the first Friday of week 1 in Term 3) not

the 28th July as mentioned last week. This week Klasse Preps have continued to work on the song ‘Regen, Regen’. The singing

sounds really good. Klasse 1/2 have been learning the song ‘Hans Nasens Fahrrad’ (a bike song) as part of their Transport

theme. Klasse 2/3 are learning to say what clothes items they are wearing. There have been a few giggles and smiles when cer-

tain clothes items (the ones which are worn underneath) have been mentioned. Klasse 3/4 will be presenting ‘Es war eine Mut-

ter’ this week before beginning work for the Poetry Competition. Klasse 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 will be starting work on the poems for

the Poetry competition next week. Selections will be in the final week of Term 2. This will also give students an opportunity to

work on their poems during the holidays.

Senior School News

VET Taster Day coming soon Yesterday our current Year 9 students were offered the opportunity to attend a VET Taster Day in Charlton on Friday 23rd of June. Students received consent forms and information about the day. It is a great opportunity to ex-perience first hand a range of VET subjects without any long term commitment at present. If students are interest-ed they would then have the opportunity to study one of these VET subjects at either East Loddon P-12 College (Building & Construction or Engineering) or other VET subjects such as, Agriculture, Hospitality, Sport & Recrea-tion, Health Services Assistance, Automotive, Hairdress-ing, Animal Studies, Community Services, Beauty Ser-vices and Music at Charlton in 2018. If students are interested in attending the taster day, they

are urged to return the consent form and $10 payment by

Monday 5th of June. I only have 11 places available, so the

process will be determined on a first in, first served basis.

Typically, this taster day opportunity would also be of-

fered to Year 10 & 11 students, however, on this particular

day, Year 10 & 11 students will be at work experience.

Year 12 Scholarship Opportunities

Year 12 students that are interested, passionate and keen to

study at La Trobe in 2018 are encouraged to speak to my-

self about the La Trobe University Aspire Program which

applications open today. I have also mentioned this to stu-

dents during reading time.

Macpherson Smith Rural Foundation Scholarship –

this Year we can nominate three students from our Col-

lege. I am encouraging students to let me know by Mon-

day 19th of June if they would like to apply for this schol-

arship. It is $15,000 / Year over three Years.

Year 9 & 10 Outdoor Ed Bike Camp

Last week I provided a brief snap shot of our Bike Camp

to date, at that stage I was really impressed with the

group’s ability to ride together, work together and support

each other along the undulating hills. That was my 6th Bike

Camp, and in all that time, that was my first group where

ALL students rode the entire way. I was truly impressed

and proud of their efforts.

Students rode from Trawool to Alexandra on the first day,

where we camped the night at the local caravan park. We then departed early in the morning towards Lake Eildon

via Cathkin, Yarck and Merton. We arrived at Bonnie Doon in perfect time to have lunch and return to school. In

total the students rode 115km. When asked what would they change for next Year, some students asked if we have

an extra day on the camp and padded bike seats.

Special mention to Sue Allen who also attended the camp as support crew, and drove the bus along while we rode our

bikes. The students were very thankful and appreciative of her encouragement and company.

Australian Synchrotron Excursion report from Mr Cameron Last Monday the Year 11 Physics class visited the Austral-ian Synchrotron to explore how our current understanding of sub-atomic particles is used. We learnt that a synchro-tron speeds electrons up to near the speed of light and, by using 6 ton electromagnets, cause the electrons to emit high energy x-rays. These x-rays have many uses, from deter-mining the formation of proteins to developing cures for leukaemia. It was also interesting to see how different areas of science work together in the real world. External Employment Opportunities

Apprentice Glazier positon and a window assembler (factory based) in the Bendigo area. Both positions will be for under 21 Year old’s only at this stage, due to the Adult Wages which apply for 21 Years

and over. For both positions, applicants must be moti-vated to achieve tasks set; be physically fit as heavy lifting will be involved, be accurate and highly aware of OHS

requirements ( White Card would be handy). Excel at Maths, due to measuring and sizing jobs The Apprenticeship will require a current Driver’s Licence to get to work sites; tool knowledge; reading drawings and plans. Applicants must register on the Gateway Website, and complete and send their results with their resume to

me. The Window Assembler, resumes to Deb, preferably with ref checks completed. Mainly fitting glass in fabricat-ed frames; tidying of workshop area; using some tools, and setting agents. Also, we have two new courses on scope as apprentice-ships through Bendigo TAFE. Certificate III in Barbering – three Year apprenticeship – queries to Julie Mott on 54341 754. Certificate III In Concreting – aimed at new workers in the concrete industry. Please see attachment.

WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY, 31ST MAY 2017 “TOBACCO - A THREAT TO DEVELOPMENT”

Tobacco control can break the cycle of poverty, contribute to ending hunger, promote sustainable agriculture and eco-nomic growth, and combat climate change. Increasing taxes on tobacco products can also be used to finance universal health cov-erage and other development programs of the government. This is the message from the World Health Organisation (WHO) to in-crease awareness of World No Tobacco Day. WHO states that it is not only governments who can step up to-bacco control efforts: people can contribute on an individual level to making a sustainable, tobacco-free world. People can commit to never take up tobacco products. Those who do use tobacco can quit the habit, or seek help in doing so, which will in turn protect their health as well as people exposed to second-hand smoke, in-cluding children, other family members and friends. Money not spent on tobacco can be, in turn, used for other essential uses, in-cluding the purchase of healthy food, healthcare and education.

For more information and FREE support, tips and advice about quitting smoking contact the Quitline, ph. 137848 or go to
