    Presidents Message

    1878

    Jason Flannagan, D.D.S.

And we are off!! I am truly honoredand privileged to lead this organization. TheIndianapolis District Dental Society, in its137 years, has many past leaders who haveprovided us with the outstanding associationwe have today. We need to thank and hon-or them. One of the ways we can do that isto treasure what we presently have.

Last year, Dr. Heather Maupinslead-ership was a wonderful example of what ourSociety has to offer. She thought outsidethe box, pushed us to think about dentistryin the 21st century and showed how wedentists can have a work/family balance. We just have to find our Perfect YES.

I am looking forward to a year filledwith opportunities. I ask each and every-one of you to join in our Societys missionto remain a strong voice for dentistry. Nomatter the workplace situation, we all have a

common goal to help the public. We striveto do this in the most ethical and respon-sible way, while balancing a wonderful fam-ily life. This year, IDDS offers 2 GeneralMembership Meetings, a Women DentistsSeminar, a Networking Seminar, OSHAand CPR seminars, and an Ethics seminar, just to name a few events in which you canbecome involved.

I hope to continue the leadership ourSociety has had. I appreciate the Societys

members and encourage their ideas. Iplan to open our members eyes to the everchanging dental environment, welcomingmore and more new members. I, with yourhelp and the help of Indiana dentists, willwork for loan repayment for our dentistsin underserved areas. I am confident withour dedicated membership these goals canbe met.

I encourage each and everyone oneof you to get involved. Make 2016 theyear that you change, No, I am too busyto Yes, how can I help? Your help canpreserve and protect our strong Society. Iwould like to thank all the Officers, theBoard, the committee members and IDDSStaff, Carolyn and Paige, for all they do forIDDS.

Thank you for entrusting me with thispresidency, and I look forward to workingwith all of you over the next year.

Medicare and Medicaid Part D Enrollment

Must I tell them I want toopt out? What happens if I donothing?

On October 20, the Centersfor Medicare and MedicaidServices (CMS) issued a bul-letinoutlining changes to, andthe delayed enforcement of, the

tions under Medicare Part D,a dentist must do one of thefollowing: Enroll as a Medicare

    provider; Enroll as an ordering/

referring provider; or Opt out of the Medicare

    program.

Go to this link formore information:-http://www.ada.org/en/publications/ada-news/2014-archive/june/dentists-must-choose-to-opt-in-or-out-of-medicare-enrollmentQ.What happens if I choose

not to do any of the above?A.As of June 1, 2016, this is

    Dr. Jason Flannagan

Part D prescriber enrollmentrequirement and to provide clar-ifying information regarding theenrollment process. The enforce-ment date is June 1, 2016.

In order to ensure yourapplication is processed in atimely fashion, CMS is urgingprescribers of Part D drugs, including dentists, to submittheir Medicare enrollment appli-cations or opt-out affidavits totheir Medicare AdministrativeContractors (MACs) by January1, 2016, so that Medicare PartD prescriptions are coverable onor after June 1, 2016.

As a reminder, in order forMedicare to pay for prescrip-

what will happen if you choosenot to do any of the above: Thefirst time you write a prescriptionfor a patient with a MedicarePart D drug plan, the plan willgive the patient a provisionalsupply of the drug and a let-ter stating that because of yourMedicare enrollment status, thedrug will not be covered after thefirst three months. The Part D

plan must also make reasonableefforts to notify you. At the endof the three-month period, if youstill have not done any of theabove, the plan will deny cover-age for any prescription that yougive that patient for that drug.

Videos depicting theeffects of acid when pouredinto Coke and Pepsi cans arevisually dramatic and educa-tional. The Scoop on Sugarvideo shows how much sugaris consumed when someonedrinks only one can of coke fora day, week, month and year.

It also discusses serving sizeswith normal being 12 ounces, not 42.

The 3D Effect on Teethshows plaque, white spotlesions, acid erosion, decay, fluoride and healthy teeth. An

informational button on the 3Dmouth causes an explosion boxwith a clinical picture of thecondition and description toappear. New words are under-lined and linked to a pictorial

glossary which explains scien-tific and health terms increasingvocabulary and knowledge ofacid and oral health.

The Drinks Destroy TeethApp concludes with a simplequiz intended for 5thgrad-ers. It can be fun to see if youand your patients are smarterthan a fifth grader, like thequiz show. As a grassrootsproject, the post card can be
