BROWNS 23RAIDERS 9December 27, 2009

Cleveland Browns Stadium, Cleveland, OhioThree defensive turnovers and a record setting day by running by Jerome Harrison helped the Browns down the Raiders 23-9. Linebacker David Bowens picked off Raiders quarterback Charlie Frye on the second play of the game to set up a 17-yard touchdown by Harrison two plays later. Kicker Phil Dawson connected on a 42-yard fi eld goal later in the fi rst quarter, putting the Browns up 10-0. The Raiders scored on their fi rst possession of the second stanza, off kicker Sebastian Janikowski’s 34-yard fi eld goal. The end of the fi rst half was marked with chippie play by both teams, with Browns offensive lineman Rex Hadnot and Raiders defensive end Richard Seymour receiving offsetting unnecessary roughness penalties. Seymour picked up another 15-yard penalty, for unsportsman like conduct and Raiders cornerback Stanford Routt was ejected two plays later after a head butt. The penalty put Cleveland at Oakland’s 27, where quarterback Derek Anderson later found wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi for a 19-yard touchdown. With one second before halftime, Janikowski hit a 61-yard fi eld goal, the longest ever made in a Browns game. Cleveland scored on its fi rst possessions of the third and fourth quarters, on fi eld goals by Dawson. Dawson’s fourth quarter fi eld goal was set up by an interception from defensive back Brandon McDonald. On the ensuing kickoff, Oakland tight end Tony Stewart was ejected for illegal contact with an offi cial. Defensive back Eric Wright later picked off a Frye pass at the four-yard line, sealing the game for Cleveland. Harrison set a club record with 39 rushing attempts and became the fi rst Brown to follow a 200-yard rushing game with a 100-yard performance, running for 148 yards.

A win would mark the Browns best start to a season since the club opened the 2001 season with a 3-2 record.

The last time the Browns had more than 400 net yards in back-to-back regular season games came in 1995 when they totaled 400 against Cincinnati (12/17) and followed with 450 at Jack-sonville (12/24).

ure which currently ranks sixth among all defensive players.

NFL’s all-time list. With 106 more, he would pass Kevin Williams (9,604) for seventh place.

QB Colt McCoy… • With a 300-yard passing performance against Oakland, he

would come the fi rst Browns quarterback to throw for 300 yards in back-to-back games since Brian Sipe passed for 327 yards at San Diego (9/25/83) and followed with 310 yards against Seattle (10/2/83).

OL Joe Thomas… • Has started and played in each of the fi rst 68 games of his

PAT SHURMUR SAID...

(On how many adjustments need to made going forward for the last 12 games)- “I’ve already spent a lot of time looking at everything we’ve done, not only in the fi rst four games, but also through the preseason, offensively. There’ll be some things we’ll focus on more and things we’ll fo-cus on less. You’ll probably see more of certain guys in the game then you may have seen. Those are the types of things. There’ll be plays and concepts we’ll use more and some we’ll put on the shelf for a while. Those are what you do, making wholesale changes is not the way to go. We have plenty of things we do base wise that I think are important that we emphasize. Then, just continue to try to get the ball to the guys that we know can make plays. On defense it would be the same. We have a scheme of defense that we play and the emphasis will be how to play that scheme bet-ter, a wrinkle or two, but without changing in the foundation. The same goes for special teams. How do we get what we do better and where do we maybe want to shift our focus in terms of becoming even better.”

(On if he will simplify the playbook as they move for-ward or if he’ll continue to do what they’ve been doing)- “I don’t know if simplify is the right word. As I mentioned, you’ll refocus on certain things you’re doing better more and some of things that maybe it’s just not quite our group that worked at other places for me, we’ll deemphasize those. I wouldn’t say simplify, we’d like to be able to do what we do, better.”

(On how Shawn Lauvao is doing a right guard)- “I think Shawn played one of his better games against Tennessee so he’s doing good. I think he had an outstanding preseason, I think he started off well and then I think he would tell you that this past game was one of his better ones.”

(On what he’s learned about D’Qwell Jackson since tak-ing over as head coach)- “When it was allowed, I had a chance to visit with him in the offseason, but when you watch him compete, when you watch him prepare what I learned about him was basically during training camp when I watched him take care of his business. He made very few mistakes, he helped get guys lined up and he was very good at stopping the run as well as playing the pass. Just being around him you see those things and you get a feel from a guy who gets things and he gets it. The world makes sense to D’Qwell and he understands the process of being a pro and he’s a talented guy. When you tie all that together then I’m glad to see he’s having the success he is.”

(On if the defensive line’s pass rush is coming along faster than what was expected)- “I think it’s good when you get sacks. I know any time when you can disrupt the quarterback it has an effect on the team. Sometimes you start looking at

hits on the quarterback, pressures or whether the quarterback has to move as well. As far as being them further along, it’s hard for me to say. I know we feel good about the guys play-ing in there and I think they are getting better and are work-ing well together. The scheme seems to fi t. I think they have seven of those 11 sacks which you know some of them have come with four man rushes where they just individually beat a guy and then some of them have come in conjunction with the pressure. It all goes hand and hand.”

(On Greg Little being described as raw as a receiver be-cause he didn’t play his fi nal year at North Carolina)- “I don’t know. He didn’t play much obviously last year, but I see him making steady improvements. Raw? I guess it can be defi ned a bunch of ways. I see a guy that’s really eager on Sunday and fi nds a way to make plays and I see him improv-ing each week. Not just running routes, but going through the process of being a pro which means how you approach your preparation, how you look after your body, how you keep yourself hydrated, how you rest. All that stuff that pros have to go through and guys only know what they know and he has been a guy who has been blessed with tremendous athletic ability. I don’t know but he may have been able to just get by on that skill. But at this level if you are going to be consistently you have to learn how to do the process. I think he is doing a good job that way.”

(On Joe Thomas)- “He’s a professional, and that would be the fi rst thing I would say. He’s a guy that practices every day, and you can tell he’s always working on his craft. He’s very proud of a good performance, and he’s critical when he makes a mistake. I think that’s the sign of a good player. I also feel like he’s a guy on our team who lends some leadership and a veteran way of doing things that rubs off on other guys. That’s what you want, especially from a guy that plays offen-sive line. Personality-wise, I think you’ll fi nd him, when you talk with him, that he’s enjoyable. He’s one of those guys that have other interests in life, and he’s just a good guy. From that standpoint, he has another little dimension there.”

(On guys gravitating towards McCoy as a leader)- “I think I see that. When you watch the interaction, the play starts in the huddle. When he gets in the huddle and he is terrifi c at calling the play, mixes up the cadence. The things we have asked him to do at the line a scrimmage he has handled well. I think the players have responded to him pretty well. That’s a natural part of his personality to take charge, but you can’t take charge unless you know what you are doing. I think he has displayed to his teammates that he knows what he is doing and I think that’s where the confi dence continues to build.”

BROWNS PLAYER QUOTESLB Scott Fujita(On the team’s play this year)- “We still have a long way to go. We still have a lot of room to grow. You have to go back to the fi lm and fi nd out where you are fall-ing short. Defensively, we gave up too many big plays against Tennessee. We have to look at that closely, look at where we fell short and move forward.”

DB Joe Haden(On how it feels that the coaches have him on the other team’s best receiver)- “It makes me feel good and it shows that the coaches trust me against a number one receiver. That’s what I’ve been trying to do since I got here, establish myself as a lockdown corner. I am just trying to do that and the coaches having faith in me to do it, it means a lot.”

LB D’Qwell Jackson(On if he likes playing in the 4-3 defense)- “It’s been nothing but great things so far. We have a great group of talent in front of me, great team and a great coaching staff. We have been able to get some victories and at the end of the day it’s all about getting victories. I have been here for quite a spell now and I am more ready for wins than personal accolades.”

(On the coaching staff referring to him as a profes-sional on and off the fi eld)- “It means a lot. From day one when I stepped into this building, I wanted to be-come a professional. Every year you learn a little bit more, a little bit more about your body and how to go about doing things. Right now I am one of the veterans on the team, so a lot of guys look at you on what you do in the building and off the fi eld. That’s very important for me, we are only going to be as good as the leaders on this team and I am up for that challenge.”

QB Colt McCoy(On how he played the fi rst quarter of the season)- “I would be the fi rst to tell you that there are a lot of things that you can work on, improve on, but I think it’s a pro-cess. The guys in here are working really hard. I’m

working really hard. I know our coaches are working really hard to really kind of get where we want to be. As for the game last, we lost so it’s hard to evaluate your play when you lose because that’s the only thing that’s on your mind. We’ve just got to re-group, stay together and keep fi ghting.”

(On if bye week is a good time to take a step back and let some things sink in a little bit)-“Absolutely. In meetings, we looked at it and some of the cut-up’s and what have been some of our best plays and what are some plays that we were kind of high on that haven’t worked as much. Who’s the best receiver at what route? What’s our best protection? What’s our best run scheme? I think that’s the one thing that you do in a bye week is kind of evaluate yourself. Through four weeks, we’ve won two games and we’ve lost two games. We’d like to be sitting here undefeated, but that’s not the case. We just have to come back off this bye week fresh and ready to go on the road.”

(On the development of the West Coast Offense)- “We’re growing every week. We are four weeks into it. We understand that we’ve got a lot of room for im-provement and a long ways to go. We’ll go back and look at some things that consistency-wise we can play better. We can get guys open. They can get some yards after the catch. It’s one of those things that week to week, you’re kind of building your team. We’ve got to do a better job.”

T.J. Ward(On what the problem was defensively)- “It was just us. We were missing tackles and we were not on our men like we should have been. We take complete responsi-bility for that. That’s not the Browns that we’ve been. We know that we can play much better than that. I don’t think the effort was there completely, but it just looked like, including myself, I am not just putting it off on the rest of my teammates, but we didn’t play how we should have played.”

Evan Moore has hauled in seven passes for 85 yards and two touch-downs. The Bengals used 14 unanswered fourth quarter points to top the Browns 27-17 in the 2011 season opener. Cincinnati scored on its fi rst three possessions to take a 13-0 second quarter lead. A 51-yard kickoff return by Joshua Cribbs sparked the Browns offense and four plays later quarterback Colt McCoy found tight end Benjamin Watson over the middle for a 34-yard touchdown. On their next possession the Browns would march 90 yards in nine plays which would result in two-yard touchdown pass from McCoy to tight end Evan Moore giving the Browns the lead 14-13. Cleveland would add to its lead in the third quarter after Phil Dawson chipped in a 20-yard fi eld goal. In the fourth quarter, a quick snap by the Bengals would catch the Browns defense off-guard and result in quarterback Bruce Gradkowski throwing a 41-yard touchdown to wide receiver A.J. Green. Running back Cedric Benson would seal the victory for the Bengals with a 39-yard touchdown run with 1:56 left in the fourth quarter. A wrist injury forced Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton, who was making his NFL debut, to the sidelines in the second half.

Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, Ind.Pat Shurmur picked up his fi rst victory as a head coach in the NFL as the Browns topped the Colts, 27-19, in Indianapolis. In-dianapolis answered back with an 11 play drive that resulted in a 52-yard fi eld goal by Adam Vinatieri. A Peyton Hillis one-yard touchdown run put the Browns ahead 14-9 at the half. A Cleveland fumble led to Vinatieri’s fourth fi eld goal of the contest. Browns safety Usama Young’s interception of quarterback Kerry Collins set up Phil Dawson for a 20-yard fi eld goal. A 43-yard punt return by Cribbs gave Cleveland good fi eld position and two plays later Hillis broke a 24-yard run for a touchdown making the score 24-12. Defensive end Jabaal Sheard’s strip sack, which he recovered, allowed the Browns to add three more points.
