Date: 23 September 2016 New £5 notes New £5 notes cannot be put into the Reval machines for dinner money. This is currently being looked into by Cunninghams, the company who run our system in school. Information Specific information for Year 7 parents: Please remember to use the online payment system, ParentPay, to pay for items or trips etc across the Academy. This is the fastest and safest way for students to pay for things. PE Lessons (Year 7) Reminders from PE which were explained recently to Year 7 students: Boys First lesson of the week, outdoor (blue with boots). Second lesson of the week, indoor (white with trainers). Girls First lesson of the week, indoor (white with trainers). Second lesson of the week, outdoor (blue with boots). Transport to school: Please be aware that we only allow a school bus to enter or leave the school grounds between the times of 2.50pm and 3.10pm (or 1.50pm 2.10pm on a Friday). We would, encourage parents to not drop off or collect their child from school in the car as this is causing heavy congestion at the start and end of the day. It is becoming increasingly more dangerous along Rein Road given the large number of vehicles which park alongside the pavement to collect students. Secondly, may I remind parents that it is prohibited (by the Local Authority) for vehicles to wait on the single yellow line outside school (during the school day). Our school’s police liaison officer, PC Cockroft will be patrolling Rein Road to ensure no offences are being committed.

Information

Specific information for Year 7 parents: Please remember to use the online payment system, ParentPay, to pay for items or trips etc across the Academy. This is the fastest and safest way for students to pay for things. PE Lessons (Year 7) Reminders from PE which were explained recently to Year 7 students: Boys First lesson of the week, outdoor (blue with boots). School Photographs Students in Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 had their school photographs taken yesterday and will have brought a proof copy of their individual photograph home. The easiest way to place an order is to visit www.tempest-schools.co.uk If you complete your order online within 5 working days you will get free postage and packaging back to the school. Alternatively, you can return your order form to B17. The last day to return orders to school is Friday 14 October. Proof copies and order forms for the form group photographs will follow shortly.

Sexting

Despite lots of education and support, an alarming number of young people nationally continue to share explicit images of themselves and others. The link below is a great source of information and advice for both parents and young people surrounding the topic of Sexting. If you have any concerns or require any further information or advice, please contact Mr D Currie (Designated Safeguarding Lead) in school. https://www.nspcc.org.uk/preventing-abuse/keeping-children-safe/sexting/

Design Technology

All ingredients and equipment brought in to school for Food Technology lessons must be collected and taken home on the same day. If this is not possible, the student must collect on the following day at 3pm or speak to their teacher. The fridges and classrooms are cleared and cleaned every Friday, if there are items left they will be thrown away. Unfortunately, there is far too much left behind to keep it indefinitely and the food is unsafe for consumption. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.

Open Day / Evening Thursday 29 September

Please be aware that on Thursday it is our annual Open Day and Open Evening. Last year, we welcomed around 1000 visitors, and we expect to be equally as busy this year. In order for staff across the Academy to prepare for the evening, the school will close to all students at 2pm. Unfortunately, we are unable to rearrange the timings of normal service buses and you are asked to look on their website for details. The privately-run L53 service will collect students from the bus bay at 2.00pm. Should any of our parents be bringing younger siblings to the Open Day/Evening:

Open Day begins at 9.30am. Visitors have the opportunity to see the school ‘in action’ and The Principal will present to visitors at 10am.

Open Evening begins at 6pm and finishes at 8.30pm. The Principal will present to visitors at 6.15pm and 7.15pm prompt.

Please be aware that the gates, at the back of school, which lead onto Scarborough Lane and Drive will be locked from 5pm onwards, for security reasons. Please use the main entrance on Rein Road to gain entry to the Academy.

Please also note that Friday 30 September is a Training Day for staff and the school is closed to students.

Open Evening

A reminder that all music groups are performing in a concert on Thursday as part of Open Evening. This includes Choir, Concert Band, Orchestra, Soul Band and soloists. Students should try and attend their rehearsal next week on the following days: Orchestra - Tuesday Choir - Wednesday Concert Band - Wednesday For times of the performances, please see a member of the department.

Friends of the School

We are a small group of parents who help out at a number of events throughout the year to raise money, both for the school and local charities. We have our first meeting on Tuesday 27 September 2016 at 6pm in the Sixth Form Area and if anyone would like to come along and join us you would be more than welcome. We very often need raffle prizes for our events but it has become increasingly difficult to source prizes as many large companies now only deal with dedicated charities and are unable to donate to any other organisations. We therefore have to rely on the smaller local businesses to help. If anyone could help us by donating a raffle prize to be used at one of our fundraising events we would be very grateful. If you can donate anything at all please either send it into school via Student Services marked for the attention of Trish Shaw or e-mail [email protected] if you need any more information about our group. Thank you

Lockers for Musical Instruments We now have 46 lockers in the Music Department for students to store their instruments, rather than using the store room. Letters are now available from Mrs Clarke, Head of Music. Students using the store room are reminded to have a name on their case and to store their instruments on a shelf.
