Data visualization greatly enhances not only data comprehension, but it allows for a greater coverage of trends and patterns within structured and unstructured data.

The Data Visualization Summit brings together leaders and experts in the field to explain and clarify the numerous benefits of using data visualization. One of the top benefits is that data becomes easier to understand, more accessible and presented in a format that helps people better interact with the data as well as analyze it.

Typically data is used for mining and reporting, however there are new sets of data visualization tools that can take your analysis to a whole new level. This has made it possible to quickly understand trends, patterns, and outliers that would not have been noticed with traditional tools.

The Data Visualization Summit wil l run concurrently with the Big Data Innovation Summit and the Internet of Things Summit to add to these fantastic networking opportunities.

Engaging Users with Game Visualization

Designing video games and designing data visualizations are rather similar art forms in both their objectives and their results. Both seek to engage users through a mixture of visual design and interaction while helping users understand and enjoy the artifact they are exploring. Therefore, when designing data visualization for visualizing data from games the two areas have much to contribute to each other. Ben Medler explores how data science and data visualization is mixing with game design both from the perspective of the developers who make games and the players who make those games their own.

Ben Medler Senior Visualization Data Scientist Electronic Arts

Ben Medler is a Senior Visualization Data Scientist at EA, where he focuses on Data UX - the cross section of data science and user experience design. Previously working as an analyst on EA franchises like Dead Space, Need for Speed and Star Wars: The Old Republic, he now works on visualizing data across the company while designing visualization tools for game developers and players. Ben holds a Ph.D. in Digital Media from Georgia Tech.

Milind earned a Masters in Genetics from Thomas Jefferson University and a B.Sc. from the University of Sydney.

Bringing the Soc ia l Universe into #DigitalHealth

There is a universe of social media mentions out there but how do you leverage that information to drive better patient and healthcare ecosystem engagement? To address that, Novartis developed a world class Minority-Report/StarWars themed interactive interface in HQ and the field to support our mHealth and customer engagement initiatives. At the center of the platform was human form factor design, behavioral design, big data infra and advanced, real-time data mining and advanced customer genomic algorithms.

Daniel Oostra is a computer scientist working as a web developer and technical lead for the MY NASA DATA Project (http://mynasadata.larc.nasa.gov). Daniel also leads development on a number of data rich applications for the Committee on Earth Observing Satellites and the Earth Systems, Technology and Energy Education for MUREP project. Daniel’s team takes NASA data and creates visualizations, lessons, activities, and other materials for students, educators and citizen scientists.

Curating Satellite Data for Students, Educators and Citizen Scientists

Data visualization hinges on one key aspect: its relevance to users. Our audiences are desperate for data that speaks to their needs and supports their research. NASA has hundreds of thousands of gigabytes of data that are accessible, in theory, but how easy is it for the average person to navigate the varying interfaces, formats and ftp sites? The MY NASA DATA project is focused on finding relevant data within NASA’s data centers and curating this data into a usable format for students, teachers, and citizen scientists. How do we empower our audiences with simple, easy to use tools that level the playing field with research scientists? During this session we’ll examine the processes we are using that allow users to extract real meaning from research-grade data.

Dimitris K. Agrafiotis, is Vice President & Chief Data Officer at Covance, where he is responsible for the architecture, design, implementation, operation, and support of information technology services, and for establishing an encompassing informatics vision to infuse innovation and strategic differentiation into the company’s product offerings. Prior to joining Covance, he spent 10 years at Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development where he served as Vice President of Informatics and Research IT. Dr. Agrafiotis received his PhD in Theoretical Organic Chemistry from Imperial College, London (1988, Henry Rzepa advisor), and held postdoctoral fellowships with Andrew Streitwieser at the University of California, Berkeley, and Nobel laureate E. J. Corey at Harvard. In 1991, he joined Parke-Davis as a Senior Scientist in the CADD group, and in 1994 he moved to 3-Dimensional Pharmaceuticals (3DP) as a founding member of its scientific staff, responsible for building the company’s informatics and computational drug design capabilities. Following a successful IPO and the acquisition of 3DP by Johnson & Johnson in 2003, he was appointed Senior Research Fellow and Team Leader of the Molecular Design & Informatics group at the East Coast site, a position he held until 2006.

Data Visualization in Drug Development

After a brief review of some innovative ways to visualize complex, high-dimensional data in drug discovery, the speaker will introduce the audience to the world of clinical development, one of the most time-consuming, expensive, and failure-prone human enterprises. In particular, we will highlight how big data and information visualization can aid in the design and execution of large, multi-center clinical trials. One of the keys to running a successful trial is the selection of high quality clinical sites, i.e., sites that are able to enroll patients quickly, engage them on an ongoing basis to prevent drop-out, and execute the trial in strict accordance to the clinical protocol. Here, we describe how we leverage the vast amounts of historical data obtained through our central clinical laboratory operations using a set of dynamic visualization displays and a normalization strategy for site performance to enable clinical trial planners to make more informed decisions. Once the trial is ongoing, data visualization can be a powerful means to monitor site performance and risk, and recommend targeted interventions. In essence, this is a talk about the invigorating diversity of data science, the power of data visualization, and the elusive art of story-telling.
