Greenhouse effects

• Sunlight enters the Earth's atmosphere, passing through the blanket of greenhouse gases. As it reaches the Earth's surface, land, water, and biosphere absorb the sunlight’s energy. Once absorbed, this energy is sent back into the atmosphere. Some of the energy passes back into space, but much of it remains trapped in the atmosphere by the greenhouse gases, causing our world to heat up.

• The greenhouse effect is the rise in temperature that the Earth experiences because certain gases in the atmosphere (water vapor, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane, for example) trap energy from the sun.
• The glass panels of the greenhouse let in light but keep heat from escaping
• if the greenhouse effect becomes stronger, it could make the Earth warmer than usual. Even a little extra warming may cause problems for humans, plants, and animals.

• What do you see in the previous picture?• What do you think after seeing this picture?
Explain the phenomenon regarding the previous picture.
• What cause this phenomenon to happen?• What other phenomenon that resemble to
this situation?• How this situation can be applied in our daily
life?

EMPOWER Materials:
1 Jar or other see-through containerData logger with heat sensorSunlamp or access to a sunny
area to perform the experiment
Instructions • 1) Place the both heat sensor in the sunlight for a few minutes to let them
get warm. • 2) Record the readings of the sensor at the top of the columns of the table
as initial temperature. • 3) Record the time next to the starting temperatures and place the jar over
the 1 of the sensor. The other sensor was act as control.• 4) Every minute, record the readings of both thermometers without
disturbing them. • Continue the experiment for one day to see the changes of temperature in
the jar.

DISCUSSION
• What can you monitor about the effect of temperature in the jar for the whole day?
• What can you conclude about the pattern of both graph?
• How do you explain the purpose of this experiment? How they relate to each other?

ENHANCE1. What cause this
phenomenon to happen?
2. How this phenomenon could be stopped?
