LCEC IS A PBIS SCHOOL! Ms. L. Ferguson, School Counselor
This year you will be hearing a lot about how LCEC is a Positive Behavior Intervention School (PBIS). LCEC is committed to implementing this 3-tier level program with integrity and fidelity. PBIS is a proven system that promotes positive behavior in our students, and over the next 3 to 5 years the program will be fully implemented. Our focus this year is to implement the facets of the first tier, the Universal Level, whereby we redefine our current systems on how we teach and re-teach expected behavior throughout the school, encourage appropriate behavior, discourage inappropriate behavior, and how we communicate with home, as well as involve the community. Our students are learning specific “DRAGON RULES” on how to be RESPONSIBLE, RESPECTFUL, and SAFE in ALL areas of the school to include classrooms, restrooms, hallways, cafetorium, playground, etc. So as you have probably gathered, this program does not only involve the LCEC staff and students, but it also involves parents and the community. Everyone has a part in making LCEC a successful PBIS school. Together, we can make it happen!

Maya Angelou was born Marguerite Johnson, in St. Louis, Missouri on April 4, 1928. She is an author and
poet who has published six autobiographies, five books of essays, several books of poetry and appeared in over twenty movies. She has received dozens of awards and over thirty honorary doctorate degrees. Ms. Angelou is best known for her series of autobiographies, which focuses on her childhood and early adult experiences. The first book, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969), tells of her life up to the age of seventeen, and brought her international recognition and acclaim. In 1993, Angelou recited her poem "On the Pulse of Morning" at the inauguration of President Bill Clinton, becoming the first poet to make an inaugural recitation since Robert Frost at John F. Kennedy's inauguration in 1961. In 1995, she was chosen to recite one of her poems at the Million Man March. Most recently, in 2009,
Angelou wrote a poem entitled "We Had Him" about Michael Jackson, which was read by Queen Latifah at his funeral.
Maya Angelou is good friends with television personality Oprah Winfrey. Oprah has organized several birthday celebrations for Ms. Angelou, including a week-long cruise for her 70th birthday in 1998. How old is Maya Angelou today?

J. C. Penney was born James Cash Penney on September 16, 1875, on a farm in Caldwell County, near Hamilton, Missouri. He was the seventh of twelve children born to his parents. Jim’s father was a poor farmer and a Baptist minister. The Penney’s raised their large family to believe in self-reliance, self-discipline, honor, education and the Golden Rule (treat others how you want to be treated). J. C. Penney became a successful retail businessman when he founded the J. C. Penney Company, a nationwide chain of stores that sells a wide variety of products. The first store he opened, on April 14, 1902, was a one-room wooden building where he and his family lived in the attic above the store.
The Penney family believed in the Golden Rule. In what way is the Golden Rule similar to the Dragon Rules at Lucas Crossing Elementary Complex?

Class Gas By Kenn Nesbitt
The teacher passed out and fell right off her chair. My classmates are crying and gasping for air. The hamster is howling and hiding his head. The plants by the window are practically dead. There's gas in the class; it's completely my fault, and smells like a chemical weapons assault. So try to remember this lesson from me: Don't take off your shoes in class after P.E. A Bad Case of the Sneezes by Bruce Lansky
Last night I had the sneezes. I was really very ill. My mother called the doctor who prescribed a purple pill. At eight o'clock I went to bed. My mom turned out the light. I used up one whole box of Kleenex sneezing through the night. I sneezed my brains out in my bed. I didn't get much rest. So that's the reason, teacher, that I flunked the spelling test.
I Wrote an Awful Poem By Kenn Nesbitt I wrote an awful poem; it was bad in the extreme. I showed it to my sister and it made my sister scream. I gave it to my mother and she promptly flipped her lid. My father blew a gasket, and my baby brother hid. I brought my poem with me when I came to school today. My teacher nearly fainted and my friends all ran away. I never knew a poem could be such amazing fun, but that was such a blast, I think I'll write another one.

Five Little Pumpkins Sitting On A Gate
Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate,
The first one said,
"Oh my, it's getting late."
The second one said,
"But we don't care."
The third one said,
"I see witches in the air."
The fourth one said,
"Let's run, and run, and run."
The fifth one said,
"Get ready for some fun."
Then whoosh went the wind,
and out went the lights,
And five little pumpkins rolled out of sight! Read more at www.theholidayspot.com/halloween
