• DARCH is the NSW Emerging Architects and Graduates Network of the Australian Institute
of Architects, representing emerging architects up to 15 years from graduation.
• DARCH is not an acronym. It was intended to be more than a young architects’ group, to
be a movement for change in the Institute and in architecture.
• DARCH was established in 2005 to enable and encourage our demographic to contribute
to the profession through opportunities at a state and national level, and in particular for
local initiatives.
• We have a mailing list of 1500 people, including members and non-members of the
Institute
• DARCH is represented at a national level with networks from all states by EmAGN: the
Emerging Architects and Graduates Network.
DARCH has held a range of initiatives and events since 2005 which are shown with reviews
and photographs on our website www.darch.com.au They include talks and slide nights, fo-
rums, competitions and exhibitions, seminars, workshops, tours, lunches and dinners.
o u r p u r p o s e
DARCH aims to create a culture of architecture within our demographic, to contribute to the
public discourse about our changing profession and changing environment, to support our
members in their careers and to connect with other design and industry professionals, and the
public.
t h e a w a r d s
A new initiative, the DARCH Horse Awards for collaboration in architecture, has been devel-
oped by DARCH to recognise and celebrate outstanding contributions by non-architects in the
pursuit of a high quality built environment. A DARCH Horse is awarded to a person or persons
nominated by a member of the Australian Institute of Architects. Nominees will have made an
outstanding contribution to architectural practice or an architectural outcome, through a col-
laborative, enriching, supportive or visionary pursuit of their own field of expertise. The catego-
ries will include: an approval authority, a builder, a client, a planner, a developer, a consultant,
and an urban provocateur. (And there will be horse themed trophies presented.)
a i m s
The aims of the awards are to engage a broad audience in discussion about our city, our so-
ciety, our culture and the place in which we live from the perspective of the importance of high
quality architecture and to recognize the valuable input affiliated professionals and industry
members make to the built environment.
e v e n t
This event will become the key event of the DARCH calendar as a unique initiative.
The awards presentation evening will be an opportunity to celebrate architecture and those
who are not often recognised for their contribution.
Awards will be presented at a cocktail event with visual presentations of the award winning
projects by winning collaborators in each category.
a u d i e n c e
We are anticipating an audience of 200 people including emerging and established architects,
and associated professionals in the building and construction industry including the nominated
consultants, planners, builders, clients, and developers.

The DARCH launch slide night 10x10x10 was held in the car park of the RAIA NSW Chapter in 2005 with slides projected onto the RAIA building. It attracted a crowd of over 200 and ten presenters had only ten slides and ten seconds each slide, including: Brett Boardman, Mad-eleine Hetherton, Tim Horton, Eoghan Lewis, Genevieve Lilley, Jesse McNicol, Adam Russell. Following this, Marcus Trimble of DARCH established the Sydney version of the Tokyo based multidisciplinary Pecha Kucha slide night series.
Q&A(rchitect) talk August 2011
We held a Q&A(rchitect) talk for Matt Chan, the 2011 recipient of the NSW Emerging Architect Prize, with discussion lead by Janne Ryan, an ideas curator and executive producer of TED x Sydney at Surry Hills Library on 11th August 2011 as part of Sydney Design 2011. The prize is designed to recognise overall excellence in practice, research or education, involvement in the profession and an outstanding contribution to architecture through leadership, and also the potential for further contribution in the future. An exhibition of the 2011 entrants was also held at Surry Hills Library.

EmAGN Sydney Photographic Competition10th December 2011
EmAGN the National Emerging Architects and Graduates Network of the Australian Institute of Architects, with DARCH, initiated a new one day photographic competition: EmAGN Sydney, held on 10th December 2011 at FraserStudios. The premise was that architects see the city a bit differently. The aim was to provide an opportunity for our demographic to engage with the city and to exhibit their work in the public domain in order to stimulate discourse about our city and how we see it.

One To One Project 7th October 2011
DARCH & SONA held the 1:1 Project on 7th October 2011 at FraserStudios, a fast paced day of creative collaboration between architecture professionals and architecture students, initi-ated by Tim Hastwell. The teams from all three universities and eight firms worked to design and build installations from Reverse Garbage goods for a bar at full scale which upon the day’s completion was opened up and more than 150 people came along for Friday night drinks. The time lapse film is available online.
