Our Honorable Founder Chairman Shri D. K. Audikesavulu Naidu (21 September 1941 – 24 April 2013) was an industrialist, entrepreneur, educationist & philanthropist par excellence. A member of the 14th Lok Sabha of India, representing Chittoor constituency of Andhra Pradesh, he was a true champion of the masses. A great leader and visionary, Shri D. K. Audikesavulu Naidu envisioned the development of a world class integrated healthcare system, with a focus on compassionate patient care, by leveraging state-of-the-art technology led by a team of committed professionals equipped with the finest medical skills and competencies. Today, Vydehi Hospital, with over 1600 beds provides exceptional medical services to the underprivileged and the needy, while several hundred students gain admission to our institutions every year to pursue undergraduate, post graduate and super speciality courses.

We aim at providing holistic education and lay emphasis on allround development of students with a methodical curriculum and systematic training of students. Today's students are a techno advanced generation who live in a sheer competitive world; I wish to thank and congratulate the esteemed parents for admitting their children to our Institute. The role of education is highly challenging in this transitional age. Hence, the focus is chiefly on academics along with other dimensions of constant growth and development of students. Our focus is not only on the physical, mental & social well being of students but also on their spiritual growth, to transform them into totipotent doctors. This is ensured by my beloved faculty who are role models of unique nature and value. I would like to

highl ight the contributions made by my fellow colleagues and Principals of Vydehi Institute of Dental Sciences to the phenomenal growth that the institution has seen. Dr. N.T Venkateshaiah, founder Principal under whose leadership the institute was established and received UG recognition as well as who initiated the commencement of the PG Program in the specialities of Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Conservative dentistry and Endodontics and Orthodontics, Dr. K.G Ghorpade, who spearheaded the commencement of PG Program in the specialities of Prosthodontics and Periodontics, Dr. D.P Narayan who was instrumental in receiving recognition in eight of the postgraduate specialities and finally, the present Principal Dr. Mohan Thomas Nainan. Dr Mohan Thomas Nainan, a dynamic leader with more than 20 years of teaching, training and administrative experience, and an ingenious educationalist has overseen the recognition for the PG Program in the speciality of Pedodontics and is keenly involved in the overall advancement of the institution. I would like to congratulate him and the editorial team for publishing this newsletter which mirrors life at Vydehi .

SCIENCES & RESEARCH CENTRE, I wish to congratulate the Management, past and

present Principals, Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff, the students, on this commendable

achievement. Overall development of the individual is the goal of education and we all

have to ensure that there is no stone left unturned to equip the student of today for the

challenges of life. This will require tremendous self-motivation on the part of all concerned

but will be fulfilling for the student as well as the faculty. The faculty at Vydehi Institute of

Dental Sciences & Research Centre has always been a trend setter but what has also been noteworthy is the

Institutional Overview

The Vydehi Institute of Dental Sciences & Research Centre, considered a top-notch, highly reputed dental

college in Karnataka was established in the year 2003. It is recognized by Dental Council of India, Government

of India and is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bengaluru. Located in the pristine,

scenic 65- acres main Vydehi Campus, the Institute offers quality education in Bachelor of Dental Surgery

(BDS) and Master of Dental Surgery (MDS). The 4-year BDS course and 3 year MDS course focuses on not only

delivering high quality education and training but in mentoring and nurturing students, imbibing them with

professionalism ethics and discipline. The state of the art infrastructure, the highly dedicated teaching faculty,

extensive hands on training, periodic workshops, CDE's and Conferences, cutting edge research facilities

suitably equip students with knowledge, clinical skills, confidence & critical reasoning to excel in their

Infrastructural Highlights

In the year 2014, the Department Of Oral Medicine and Radiology became completely digitalized, with the procurement of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) machine. Our college pioneered the use of CBCT in academics. This machine can be used exclusively for 3D imaging of maxilla and mandible, similar to computed tomography (CT), but at a reasonable cost. CBCT helps in treatment planning for implants, assessment of roots, root canals, tooth fractures, 3D cephalometry, analysis of TM Joint and benign and malignant lesions of the jaw. It has greatly benefited college patients and surrounding private practitioners, who look for our support for imaging, interpretation, and as a last resort when it comes to dilemmas in diagnosis. We encourage research utilizing CBCT technology and are actively involved in originalresearch in the field.

The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery has performed over 294 major cases under general anaesthesiain 2017-2018 (TILL DATE), one of the highest amongst dental colleges in Karnataka. In collaborationwith Oral maxillofacial Surgery department, Distraction Osteogenesis and Cleft- lip & Cleft-palate cases are beingtreated by the Department of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopaedics.

The Department of Periodontics has an air-conditioned LASER

room equipped with an 810 nm A.R.C Fox Diode laser used to

perform various blood-less surgical procedures like excisions,

depigmentations ,frenectomy and other periodontal surgical

procedures.

The well-equipped Oral histopathology laboratory, Department of Oral Pathology & Microbiology receives specimens like odontogenic cysts, tumors, bone lesions, oral epithelial pathologies, and salivary gland malignancies and generates approximately 700 reports every year. The well-furnished hematology lab, cytology lab and microbiology lab conducts laboratory investigation on approximately 8,500 patients every year.

LETTER OF APPRECIATION from Dr. Vijay Kumar, DISTRICT HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE O F F I C E R , K O L A R , G OV E R N M E N T O F KARNATAKA for DANTA BHAGYA YOJANA CAMP conducted in SRINIVASPURA, KOLAR on 15 & 16-03-18, where 29 patients where rehabilitated with complete dentures in 2 days.

Public Health Dentistry:The Department of Public Health Dentistry has conducted a multitude of outreach programs in Co- ordination with Quess Corp Ltd, Parinaam foundation, Samruddhi Trust, Rotary Club and Lions Club, Bangalore under CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY. In 2018 a total of 52 camps (36 screening + 16 Treatment) were conducted and a total of 5052 patients screened. A total of 278 patients were treated in the camps. While a total of 2196 patients were screened and referred to the college from the PHD Satellite centres (Kannamangala Rural health Training centre and Shivajinagar Urban health Training Centre). The Dental OPD at VIMS & RC screened and referred 928 patients.

Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry:The Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry, Vydehi Institute of Dental Sciences and Research Centre routinely conducts interactive dental workshops, school dental screening and treatment camps in various schools across Whitefield and KR Puram, Bengaluru, as part of

a comprehensive primary preventive school dental health programme initiative. The Department has conducted numerous treatment camps in collaboration with the Shishu Mandir Organisation, The Samruddhi Trust and the Azim Premji Foundation (Windmills of Your Mind School). Free dental treatment is provided to children from the adopted government schools. In the current year the following programmes/camps were conducted:Ÿ Oral health screening camp was conducted in Government Primary School,

Seetharampalya on 03.01.18 where a total of 50 children in the

age group of 3- 11 years were examined. This was followed by comprehensive treatment being rendered to the schoolchildren.

th thŸ A Dental Health Education talk on oral hygiene maintenance for 6 & 7

standard students in the age group of 10-12 years was given in Ryan International School, Kundalahalli, on 14.02.18.

Ÿ An oral health screening camp was conducted in Shishu Mandir School, KR Puram on 08.03.2018 and15.03.2018 where a total of 150 children in the age group 4- 15 years were examined.

Ÿ Two treatment camps for Government schools were conducted on 02.08.18 and 03.08.18. Total Number of children treated was 36.

THFREE MEGA HEALTH CAMP- 24 APRIL, 2016

In fond memory of the birth anniversary of our beloved founder Chairman, Dr. thShri D.K. Audikeshavulu, a free Mega Health Camp was conducted on 24

April, 2016 in Vydehi Institute of Dental Sciences and Research Centre. 229

patients were screened and treated in various departments of the dental

college. All procedures such as Diagnosis, X-rays, CBCT screening, extractions,

orthodontic treatment, denture making, periodontal surgeries, root canal

treatment and dental restorations were done free of cost. Various specialized

treatments for children were also performed. Blood cultures and tests were also

done in the Department of Oral Pathology.
