DALEKOARTS TO OPEN NEW PERFORMANCE VENUE THIS WEEK

New Prague’s professional theatre company will open The Philadelphia Story & Rancho Mirage Thursday

MAY 1st, 2014 – Amazon started in a garage, Harley Davidson started in a garage, Apple started in a garage…why not DalekoArts?

This is the attitude of Co-Artistic Directors, Ben Thietje and Amanda White, who are overseeing this weekend’s opening of their second season of local professional theatre – in a space that used to service ATVs.

“We’re running into challenges left and right,” explained Thietje. “But regardless of space limitations, the shows will be ready to go; the artistic quality will be there. We’re excited to see what sort of intimate feel this tiny building will produce.”

After performing all of last season at the New Prague Middle School, DalekoArts found itself with a space problem. Both the middle school and the high school auditoriums were already booked for summer 2014. So co-founders White and Thietje scoured the area for a potential stage.

“This was quite literally our only option,” said White. “We’re a brand new non-profit organization, so the list of spaces in town that were affordable to us was not a long one. But we knew that good theatre will work in virtually any space. In the end, we think this 40-seat theatre will give people in the area a fun and unique night out.”

The space, referred to by the company as the D.A. Garage, is located at 470 5th Ave SW in New Prague, just behind Welcome Auto. The 2014 season consists of the Katharine Hepburn classic The Philadelphia Story, a brand new dark comedy called Rancho Mirage, and the spunky musical Little Shop of Horrors. The entire season is once again sponsored by Prairie Pond Winery, who is hosting all opening night parties, as well as offering special deals for patrons who bring in their playbill.

“Because we only have 40 seats, space is very limited for every performance,” commented Thietje. “I would highly suggest ordering tickets in advance. We don’t want people to drive down and then get turned away at the door. The garage door, that is.”
