Chapter I Prasnavatara (beginning of query)

    Sloka 1.

Having paid obeisance to Lord Narasimha who is fierce by his form and who is ever emitting fire from face, who is

one without a 2nd, and who is the over-Lord of the entire universe, Sripati (Varahamihira) is writing this work Daivajna Vallabha dealing with the science of Prasna.

    Sloka 2.

Astrologer who proclaims good and bad results after a deep consideration of ten Avasthas (states) of Grahas and

results arising from the different Bhavas, never goes wrong.

    Sloka 3. – 6.

Planetary States: Diptha (shining), Dina (miserable), Swastha (comfortable), Muditha (happy), Suptha (sleeping),

Prapiditha (troubled), Mushita (robbed), Parihiyamanavirya (with power declining), Pravriddhavirya (with increased

vigor), and Adhivirya (endowed with extreme power) are the ten planetary states:

    1. When Graha is placed in its exaltation Rasi it is called Diptha.

    2. When it is in its debilitation Rasi it is called Dina.

    3. In its own Rasi, Graha is termed Swastha.

    4. In a friendly Rasi it is called Mudhitha.

    5. In an inimical Rasi it is called Suptha.

    6. When it is defeated in planetary war it is termed Nipiditha.

    7. While it is in heliocal setting it is called Mushita.

    8. While it is approaching its debilitation Rasi it is named Parihiyamanavirya.

    9. While it is approaching its exaltation Rasi it is termed Pravriddhavirya.

    10. The Graha placed in the Vargas of benefics after its rising is called Adhikavirya.

    Sloka 7. - 8.

Results of Planetary states Diptha etc.: When a Graha is in Diptha state, full acquisition of desired objects is to be

foretold. If it be in Dina state, it indicates impending poverty.

If Graha be in Swastha state, object will be accomplished and there will be acquisition of wealth, fame and happiness in addition. If it be in Mudhitha state, there will be all-round happiness and the accomplishment of desired objects.

If Graha be in Prasuptha state, there will be danger and accidents etc. If it is in Prapiditha state, there will be troubles

through enemies. If it be in Mushita state, there will be loss of wealth. If Graha be in Pravriddhavirya state, there will be acquisition of elephants, horses, gold and lands, i.e. wealth. If it be Adhivirya state, it bestows the three kinds of

powers (powers of energy, good-counsel and majesty) and extensive properties.

    Sloka 9. - 10.

The duty of the querist: querist should worship in his Bhava Grahas and Rasi Chakra (Zodiacal diagram) and Stars

with flowers, fruits, gold and precious stones. He should be full of devotion towards God and Grahas and should offer homage to deities and preceptors. Carrying flowers, gems, fruits and sacred vice, he should go to Astrologer and

pay respects to him and with great reverence, facing an auspicious direction (East, North etc.), he should put query to him with a pure mind and that query should be put once only.

    Sloka 11.

Astrologer should understand the good and bad results by considering carefully the syllables of query, as also omens obtaining around and then proclaim prediction for that time.

  • Daivajna Vallabha (Prasna) by Varaha Mihira Edited by Chistabo, Jan 2012

    4

    Sloka 12.

If query is put in a place having charming trees laden with flowers, which is rendered pure by cow-dung, flowers and

water and a place pleasing to the eyes, surely men will accomplish their desired objects without any doubt.

    Sloka 13.

If the place is pleasing to the eyes and the mind, if there be sight of auspicious objects at the time of query, good

results in response to query are bound to happen in near future, thus say Acharyas Maya and Maniththa.

Thus ends Chapter I entitled "Prasnavatara (beginning of query)" in the work Daivajna Vallabha by Varahamihira.

Chapter II Good and bad results

    Sloka 1.

Five auspicious omens produce the achievement of desired objects. And five inauspicious omens lead to undesirable

result. If both auspicious and inauspicious omens are seen, result has to be told by judgment of the strength of omens.

Results can be proclaimed on the basis of the strength of even four or less number of omens.

    Sloka 2.

Bhava which is associated or aspected by its Lord flourishes and yields its results fully. If the places 2, 4, 7, 10 and 12,

counted from a Bhava, are occupied by benefics, Bhava flourishes. If said places are occupied by malefics, it decays.

    Sloka 3.

The different synonyms of names of twelve Bhavas, as also names acquired by them through their functions, are being

told according to the opinion of ancient Sages. From these results of queries have to be judged.

    Sloka 4.

Health, honor, qualities, nature, conduct, age, state, caste, purity, happiness, misery, expression, form, color, wife of

nephew - all these are to be judged from the 1st Bhava.

    Sloka 5.

Manikya (ruby), pearl, gem, metallic ores, articles, dress, gold, house, silver, grains, transactions, buying and selling -

all these are to be judged from 2nd Bhava in general.

    Sloka 6.

Daughter-in-law, younger brother, welfare, intellect, gains, servants, servant maids, valorous actions and things

relating to brother - all these are to be judged from 3rd Bhava.

    Sloka 7.

House, treasure, entry into caves and other holes, great medicines, cultivated lands, fields, orchards, friends, water,

ceremonies in connection with ancestors, coming and going, village, happiness, demotions, loss of post, gains, entry into a house, increase, parents, deeds relating to one's native country and gains therefrom - all these are to be judged

    from 4th Bhava.

    Sloka 8.

Deeds of many kinds, humility, execution, planning, learning, Niti, intellect, hymns, chanting, compromise,

pregnancy, children, intellect and happiness derived through children and wealth, are matters to be judged from 5th Bhava.

    Sloka 9.

Ill health, bad state, enemies, servants, cruel deeds, heavy actions, witchcraft applied by enemies with an intention of

killing enemies, doubts, wars, uncle, buffaloes, diseases etc. are to be considered from 6th Bhava.

    5

    Sloka 10.

Buying, health, trade, debates, lust, servants, wife, women, thefts, returning from travel, sister's son (nephew), coming

and going - all these are denoted by 7th Bhava.

    Sloka 11.

Longevity and enmity, death, ruling powers, strife, quarrels, cleft, quarrels among relatives, hatred, places difficult to

approach, fort, destruction of wife and enemies, crossing of rivers etc. are to be seen from 8th Bhava.

    Sloka 12.

Sacred study of books, intention in Vedic temples, travels to holy places, love, coronation of Kings, preceptor,

meritorious deeds, reservoirs of water (wells, ponds, lakes etc.), brother-in-laws, brothers of husbands and wives and governmental favor, are matters to be seen from 9th Bhava.

    Sloka 13.

Clues from the sky, rains, actions of one's father and his place, respect, merit, country, power authority, cows, fall

from position (displacements, demotions etc.), are judged from 10th Bhava.

    Sloka 14.

Advancement of one's actions, success in enterprises, gains from trade, elephants, houses, dress, transport, vehicles,

bedding, loss of gold and wealth, gains of damsels and elephants, father-in-law, are judged from 11th Bhava.

    Sloka 15.

Renunciation, enjoyments, sacrifices, marriage, donation, cultivation, expenditure, injury, maternal uncle, mother's

sister, wife of maternal uncle, wars, defeat in a war, are matters to be seen from 12th Bhava.

    Sloka 16.

Objects that are to be judged from different Bhavas, as proclaimed by great Acharyas Yavana etc., become functional

names attributed to Bhava. From corresponding Bhava objects should be judged in a query.

    Sloka 17.

While answering queries, whatever object is under consideration, Bhava representing the same should be treated as

    Lagna and results declared.

    Sloka 18.

From functions attributed to different Bhavas, Lagna has to be determined as told above. Past has to be judged from

12th Bhava and future from 2nd Bhava.

    Sloka 19.

Combinations for success of object of query: if Lagna falls in a Shirshodaya Rasi or in Rasi of a benefic Graha, result of

query will be auspicious. Under opposite circumstances, results will be just the reverse. If circumstances are mixed,

results will also be found to be of mixed nature.

    Sloka 20.

All desired objects are achieved if benefics occupy Kendras (1st, 4th, 7th & 10th Bhava) and trikona Bhavas (5th and 9th)

and at the same time malefics are situated in 3rd, 6th and 11th Bhava, and they do not occupy Kendras and 8th Bhava.

    Sloka 21.

If Lord of an angular Bhava is placed in Lagna or friend of Lord of Lagna be placed in an angular Bhava and malefic

Grahas do not occupy Kendras, 8th and 12th Bhava, result of query will be auspicious.

    Sloka 22.

If Lagna falls in a human Rasi and be aspected by benefic Grahas or if benefics occupy 1st, 4th, 7t, and 10th Bhava and

malefics occupy 3rd, 6th and 11th Bhava, good results, gains and financial prosperity have to be foretold.

    Sloka 23.

Rasis Mithuna, Kanya, Tula, Kumbha are termed human Rasis. If benefics are placed in these Rasis, results will be

auspicious. Malefics in 11th and 12th Bhava will not yield good results. Weak Chandra in Lagna is not good. But in 10th Bhava it is good.

  • Daivajna Vallabha (Prasna) by Varaha Mihira Edited by Chistabo, Jan 2012

    6

    Sloka 24.

If Lagna falls in a biped or a quadruped Rasi and is aspected by a malefic Graha, troubles will arise. But if aspected by

benefic Graha, good results will arise. If there is a human Rasi on Lagna, all results will be good.

    Sloka 25.

If Lagna and Chandra are aspected by benefics, results will be good. But if they are aspected by malefic Grahas, evil

results happen. Thus have been declared results arising from Chandra.

Here ends Chapter II entitled "Good and bad results" in the work Daivajna Vallabha by Varahamihira.

    Chapter III Gains and losses

    Sloka 1.

If benefics are placed in 11th, 7th, 5th and 3rd Bhava, they cause gain. Malefics placed in these Bhavas do not yield

desired result. Benefics placed in 10th or 7th bestow status and position upon native. When they are placed in 2nd, 5th or

1st Bhava, they confer respect, honor and wealth upon native.

    Sloka 2.

If Chandra is placed in 7th, 10th, 2nd, 6th, 3rd or 11th Bhava and is aspected by benefics, person will get good results

through a lady or he will have gains through the help of a woman. But if Chandra is placed in 1st, 3rd, 5th, 8th or 9th Bhava, aspected by evil Grahas, he will cause fear. There will be destruction or failure in undertaking and expenditure

of wealth. If benefics are situated in these Bhavas, they will confer status, wealth, property and other good results upon native.

    Sloka 3.

If benefics are placed in Trines and Kendras and malefics in 3rd, 6th and 11th Bhava, querist will have gains very quickly. If they are situated otherwise (in the opposite manner), they do not produce any gain.

    Sloka 4.

Satyacharya and Acharya Bali state that if Chandra is placed in 4th or 7th Bhava and Surya in placed in Lagna or 10th Bhava, person has monetary gains immediately.

    Sloka 5.

If Lagna of query falls in Rasis Vrisabha, Simha, Vrischika or Kumbha, person gains some position (status) or post. If it falls in a movable Rasi, this does not happen. If Lagna falls in a dual Rasi, both results happen.

Here ends Chapter III entitled "Gains and losses" in the work Daivajna Vallabha by Varahamihira.

Chapter IV Travels (coming and going) in general

    Sloka 1.

If Lagna of query falls in a fixed Rasi, there is no coming and going (i.e. no travels). If it falls in a movable Rasi, travel

(coming and going) definitely occurs. If Lagna falls in a dual Rasi, 1st and 2nd half of dual Rasi produce results similar

    to movable and fixed Rasis.

  • Daivajna Vallabha (Prasna) by Varaha Mihira Edited by Chistabo, Jan 2012

    7

    Sloka 2.

Even if one among Grahas Surya, Sani, Budha and Sukra be placed in Lagna identical with a Chara (movable Rasi),

travel takes place early. But if this Graha is retrograde, there will be no travel.

    Sloka 3.

If Lagna falls in a fixed Rasi with one among Guru, Budha, Sukra or Surya placed therein, the traveler breaks his

journey and returns without any doubt.

    Sloka 4.

If at the time of query one of Grahas Surya, Guru, Budha or Sukra be placed in 11th Bhava, person will have to go out

on a journey very early. But if one of these Grahas be placed in 12th Bhava, he breaks his journey and returns - thus one ought to tell.

    Sloka 5.

If Lagna falls in a fixed Rasi and even if one of Sani or Guru aspects the same and if query relates to the return of a

person who has gone to distant lands, the reply should be that there is no return.

    Sloka 6.

If Lagna falls in a fixed Rasi and there is aspect of malefic Grahas on malefics placed in 5th, 6th and 9th Bhava, travel is

not to be predicted. But if Lagna falls in a movable Rasi, travel will take place definitely.

    Sloka 7.

If Sukra, Guru or Budha is placed in 2nd or 12th Rasi from Lagna or Chandra Lagna, what is there to be told about

    travel to querist.

    Sloka 8.

Time of return: count the number of Rasis in which the strongest Graha is placed away from Lagna. Person in exile

will return in so many months as indicated by this number. There is no doubt regarding this.

    Sloka 9.

If strongest Graha is placed in a movable Navamsa, the time period is to be taken as indicated. But if it be in fixed

Navamsa, the time period is to be doubled. And if strongest Graha be in a dual Navamsa, the time period is to be

    trebled.

    Sloka 10.

Scholars well versed in Horary Astrology declare that at the time when Lord of 7th Bhava from Lagna of query

becomes retrograde, person in exile returns.

Here ends Chapter IV entitled "Travels in general" in the work Daivajna Vallabha by Varahamihira.

Chapter V Invasion and retreat of enemies

    Sloka 1.

If 5th or 6th Bhava is occupied by malefics, enemy retreats on the way. When malefics are placed in 4th Bhava, enemy,

even though he might have approached very near, will have his forces defeated and destroyed and thereafter returns

    disinterested.

    Sloka 2.

If 4th Bhava falls in Rasis Vrischika, Meena or Karkataka and is aspected by benefic Grahas, enemy is defeated. If there

be a quadruped Rasi in 4th Bhava, enemy who has come with the intention of conquering definitely runs away.

  • Daivajna Vallabha (Prasna) by Varaha Mihira Edited by Chistabo, Jan 2012

    8

    Sloka 3.

If Lagna falls in a movable Rasi (Chara Rasi) and contains a benefic Graha, then surely it causes more auspicious

results to Kings who attack. If movable Lagna is combined with a malefic Graha, surely inauspicious results occur to them. If a fixed Rasi rises with benefic Graha in it, definitely good results are produced.

    Sloka 4.

If Chandra is placed in a fixed Rasi and Lagna is on a movable Rasi or Navamsa, enemy surely comes. But if Chandra

is in a movable Rasi and Lagna falls in a fixed Rasi or Navamsa, enemy does not attack.

    Sloka 5.

If Chandra is in a dual Rasi and Lagna falls in a fixed Rasi, enemy comes and then returns. In this combination, if

Budha, Guru and Sukra are placed in 6th Bhava, enemy is destroyed.

    Sloka 6.

If Lagna falls in a fixed Rasi and is aspected by Guru and Sani, then either enemy does not come or he may not go

back after attacking. If malefics are placed in 3rd, 5th and 6th Bhava, enemy has to be faced. If they are placed in 4th

    Bhava, enemy surely returns.

    Sloka 7.

If Chandra is placed in a movable Rasi and Lagna falls in a dual Rasi, enemy comes half way and then returns. If

Chandra is placed in a dual Rasi and Lagna falls in a movable Rasi, enemy comes with two armies. But if Lagna and Chandra are aspected by malefic Grahas, he is defeated also.

    Sloka 8.

If Chandra and Surya are situated in 4th Bhava, the terrible army of enemy does not come. But if 4th Bhava is occupied

by Guru, Budha and Sukra, enemy comes very soon.

    Sloka 9.

If Lagna or 4th Bhava falls in Rasis Simha, Mesha, Dhanus and Vrisabha and if no Graha is situated in these places,

then also enemy will not be able to stay. This is certain.

    Sloka 10.

If there be a fixed Rasi on Lagna and if it is occupied by Surya or Guru, enemy is quiet in his own place. But if same

Grahas are placed in a movable Rasi in Lagna, it should be told that enemy will come soon.

    Sloka 11.

If Guru and Sukra are placed separately or together in 2nd or 3rd Bhava, enemy comes very soon. If Lords of 1st, 9th and

10th Bhava are placed in fixed Rasis, enemy never comes.

    Sloka 12.

The time of attack of enemy: if there be no Graha between Lagna and Chandra, enemy will attack in as many days as

are indicated by Bhava occupied by Chandra from Lagna.

Here ends Chapter V entitled "Invasion and retreat of enemies" in the work Daivajna Vallabha by Varahamihira.

Chapter VI Queries about one who is abroad

    Sloka 1.

If all Grahas are situated in 3rd, 5th and 2nd Bhava, person who has gone abroad surely returns. Benefics in these places

cause the retrieval of lost object. If Guru or Sukra is placed there, person returns quickly.

  • Daivajna Vallabha (Prasna) by Varaha Mihira Edited by Chistabo, Jan 2012

    9

    Sloka 2.

If Guru is situated in a quadrant and there is a Graha in 6th or 7th, then person who has gone abroad returns. Similarly,

if Budha or Sukra is placed in 5th or 9th Bhava, person returns.

    Sloka 3.

If Chandra is placed in 8th Bhava and there is no malefic in Kendras, person who has gone abroad returns happily. If

there is a benefic Graha in Kendras, he returns with gains.

    Sloka 4.

If a Prishthodaya Rasi happens to be Lagna and the same is aspected by a malefic, person who has gone abroad is

dead or he is in jail. If Lagna is aspected by a benefic Graha, bad results do not happen. If a malefic is placed in 6th, Kendra or 3rd Bhava, person is either lost, gone elsewhere or has fallen from his position.

    Sloka 5.

If Guru and Sukra be placed in 2nd and 3rd Bhava in any manner, person gone abroad will surely return. If they be

placed in 4th Bhava, person gone abroad definitely enters his house (returns).

    Sloka 6.

If malefics are placed in 3rd or 11th Bhava and benefics are situated in Kendras and Trikonas, person surely returns.

    Sloka 7.

If Sani is placed in 4th, 8th, 9th or 5th Bhava in Rasi owned by a malefic and aspected by a malefic, person who has gone

abroad is definitely put to confinement in jail etc.

    Sloka 8.

If Lagna falls in fixed Rasi and the same is occupied by a benefic, the confinement is permanent. But if Lagna falls in a

movable Rasi and contains a malefic Graha, he is released from imprisonment early. If there is a dual Rasi on Lagna, release takes place after some time.

    Sloka 9.

If malefics are placed in 5th, 9th and 7th Bhava and if they are aspected by Grahas inimical to them and if Lagna falls in

a Prishthodaya Rasi not aspected by benefics, death of traveler on the way is indicated.

    Sloka 10.

If a benefic is placed in 9th Bhava, traveler does not encounter any kind of trouble on the way. If there be a malefic

Graha on Lagna, there will be fear, diseases, difficulties and other troubles on the way.

Here ends Chapter VI entitled "Queries about one who is abroad" in the work Daivajna Vallabha by Varahamihira.

    Chapter VII Success and defeat

    Sloka 1.

Benefics placed in 10th, 7th and 1st Bhava bestow victory to King residing in the city (i.e. one attacked). Sani and

Mangala placed in 9th Bhava cause fear and defeat, but benefics Guru, Sukra and Budha placed in 9th Bhava confer victory on him.

    Sloka 2.

In chart of query, six Bhavas, beginning from 3rd, belong to the citizens King residing in the city who is being attacked.

Six Bhavas beginning from 9th belong to invader. The part conjoined with benefics gives victory to the party indicated

by the same. The part containing malefics causes defeat to the corresponding party.

  • Daivajna Vallabha (Prasna) by Varaha Mihira Edited by Chistabo, Jan 2012

    10

    Sloka 3.

If both benefics and malefics are placed in these parts, mixed results are to be predicted. Some scholars state

differently - malefics posited in 10th, 11th and 12th Bhava cause benefic results to the invader, but produce malefic results to the citizens.

    Sloka 4.

Even if malefics are placed in any of Rasis Mithuna, Tula, Kumbha, Kanya and Mesha, invader gets success and the

one who is attacked is defeated.

    Sloka 5.

If there is a human Rasi on Lagna and there are malefics in Kendras, 12th and 11th Bhava, the two parties will enter into

treaty very soon. If malefics are placed in dual Rasis, enmity between the two parties will be result.

    Sloka 6.

If there is a human Rasi on Lagna and the same is aspected by benefics or if there are benefics in Kendras, there is

enmity between two parties. If on said Lagna there is malefic aspect or if there are malefic Grahas in those places,

enmity between two parties is result.

    Sloka 7.

If there is a Rasi owned by a malefic on Lagna and if the same is aspected or combined with malefics, a terrible war is

to be predicted. If there be aspect of benefic Grahas over the same, war will be a small one.

    Sloka 8.

Yavanacharya has declared that keeping Surya, Wind, Guru and Sukra on the back side, one wins his enemies and

    attains fame.

    Sloka 9.

If Sani placed in Kendra aspects Surya posited in another Kendra, result is defeat. If Surya be placed in 8th Bhava and

is aspected by Sani posited in a Kendra, death will be result.

    Sloka 10.

If Surya in placed in Lagna and Chandra is in 8th Bhava and if Mangala and Sani aspect them, defeat is certain to

querist. If Chandra is posited in Lagna and Surya is in 8th Bhava, aspected by Mangala and Sani, defeat would be result.

    Sloka 11.

Combination for victory of invader: if at the time of query Guru, Budha, Surya and Sukra be placed in 5th, 4th, 3rd and

1st Bhava and if Chandra, Sani and Mangala be placed in 11th Bhava, invading King conquers the defendant and

    carries booty etc.

    Sloka 12.

If Mangala or Sani is placed in Lagna, Guru in 5th, Surya in 10th and Sukra or Budha in 10th or 11th Bhava, victory over

    enemies is certain.

    Sloka 13.

If Guru, Surya and Chandra are respectively placed in Lagna, 6th and 10th Bhava, there will be success. In the same

way it should be understood that if Guru, Sukra and Surya are in 1st, 6th and 10th Bhava, person will have victory in war.

    Sloka 14.

One will get an able minister or adviser if there is Guru in 11th Bhava and there are Sani and Mangala in 10th Bhava. If

Budha is placed in 7th Bhava, there will be victory.

    Sloka 15. - 16.

If Mangala, Surya and Sani are placed in 3rd Bhava and there is a benefic in Lagna, querist will have success. Parashara

has declared that placement of Guru in Lagna and a malefic in 11th or 10th Bhava produces victory.

  • Daivajna Vallabha (Prasna) by Varaha Mihira Edited by Chistabo, Jan 2012

    11

    Sloka 17.

If Mangala and Sani are placed in 6th Bhava and Chandra and Guru are placed in Lagna with Budha and Sukra in 11th

Bhava and Surya in 10th Bhava, there is definite victory.

    Sloka 18.

Defeat and death in war: King will be defeated in war if 9th, 5th and 1st Bhava are respectively occupied by Sani,

Chandra and Mangala. If Chandra and Sani are placed in Lagna aspected by Mangala, King dies (in the war).

    Sloka 19.

Other combinations for death in war: if there be Mangala and Sani in 8th Bhava and Surya in Lagna, death results.

Similarly, if Surya and Chandra occupy any of 3rd, 11th or 8th Bhava, there will be death in war.

    Sloka 20.

If Mangala, Budha and Chandra occupy 7th Bhava, King who goes on expedition to conquer dies. If Sukra and

Mangala are placed in Lagna, enemies will increase in number and death from hunger results to the party attacked.

    Sloka 21.

If there is a Rasi belonging to Mangala or Sani on Lagna, and in 6th Bhava there is a Rasi belonging to Budha or Sukra

and in 8th Bhava there is Rasi belonging to Surya and if these places are occupied by malefics, in that war an intelligent minister of King dies in the battle.

    Sloka 22.

If there are malefics in Lagna and 5th Bhava, son of the querist surely dies. If Chandra occupies Lagna along with

Mangala and if they are aspected by Sani, he will be defeated in war.

    Sloka 23.

If Chandra occupies 7th or 8th Bhava and Surya is placed in Lagna or if Surya occupies 7th or 8th Bhava and Chandra is

in Lagna, King (who goes to conquer his enemies) and his army meets with fear, defeat and death.

    Sloka 24.

If weak and eclipsed malefics are placed in 2nd, 3rd and Kendra Bhavas with Chandra in 8th Bhava, then King putting

query will be either captured or will be killed.

    Sloka 25.

If Mangala and Chandra occupy 7th Bhava and Surya and Budha are placed in Lagna, there will be rift in the army.

Similarly, if Sani and Mangala are placed in 7th Bhava and in Lagna Budha and Sukra are placed, then also there will

be quarrels in the army leading to defeat.

    Sloka 26.

If all these Grahas (Surya, Mangala, Sani and Budha told in previous Sloka) be placed in 9th Bhava, King kills his

minister and preceptor. In this very combination, if Chandra is placed in Lagna, King kills his preceptors, horses, artists, craftsmen and his sons.

    Sloka 27.

If Surya and Sani placed in Lagna receive aspect of Mangala and Chandra is placed in 7th Bhava and all benefics are

weak, Commander-in-Chief of King will be killed.

    Sloka 28.

If Chandra is placed in 7th Bhava with Surya in Lagna, Sani and Mangala in 8th Bhava and Budha is placed in 3rd

Bhava, King and his minister are killed in the war.

    Sloka 29.

If a Sirshodaya Rasi rises on Lagna aspected by or conjoined with benefics and friendly Grahas and if strong benefics

occupy Lagna in Varga of benefics, all things are accomplished. Under a reverse combination evil ensues. Other things

may be considered with reference to Lagna of travel and natal horoscope.

    Chapter VIII Recovery from diseases

    Sloka 1.

If a malefic is situated in Lagna or 8th Bhava and aspects Rasi occupied by Chandra in natal chart of the patient, that

    patient surely dies.

    Sloka 2.

If there is a Prishthodaya Rasi on Lagna, malefics occupy Kendras, Chandra is in 8th Bhava, that patient dies. If strong

malefics aspect Lagna and Chandra, then patient dies.

    Sloka 3.

If Lagna is occupied by Chandra or Budha aspected by malefics, troubles and hardships are to be foretold to querist.

    Sloka 4.

If benefics occupy 5th, 7th and 8th Bhava and there is aspect of benefic Grahas over malefics and Chandra occupies 11th,

3rd, 6th or 10th Bhava and there are benefics in the same places, counted from Chandra, patient recovers.

    Sloka 5.

If Sani placed in 9th Bhava is combined with or aspected by malefics and it is not having conjunction and aspect of

benefic Grahas, patient goes to some foreign country. If such a Sani is in 6th or 8th Bhava, patient surely dies.

    Sloka 6.

If Chandra is situated in an Upachayasthana and there are benefics situated in Kendras, Trines and 8th Bhava or if

there is aspect of benefic Grahas over Lagna, patient recovers after going to a different place.

    Sloka 7.

If there is Full Chandra in Lagna getting aspect of Guru or if Guru and Sukra are placed in Kendras, patient is cured.

    Sloka 8.

If there is a fixed Rasi on Lagna, death does not take place and disease is also not cured. In a movable Lagna, result is

reverse. In a dual Rasi, result is similar to that of a fixed Rasi.

Here ends Chapter VIII entitled "Recovery from diseases" in the work Daivajna Vallabha by Varahamihira.

Chapter IX Getting or not getting lost articles

    Sloka 1.

If there is a fixed Rasi, fixed Navamsa or Vargothama Navamsa in Lagna, article stolen is in the same place and surely

a person known to querist has stolen it. If there is a movable Rasi or Navamsa on Lagna, some external person has

    stolen it.

    Sloka 2.

If there is a dual Rasi on Lagna, some neighbor has stolen the article, thus it should be predicted. If a fixed Rasi rises,

article is there itself. But if a movable Rasi rises, it has gone elsewhere.

  • Daivajna Vallabha (Prasna) by Varaha Mihira Edited by Chistabo, Jan 2012

    13

    Sloka 3.

If a dual Rasi rises, stolen article has gone outside house. Caste, color, qualities and form of thief will correspond to

nature of strongest Graha placed in 7th Bhava. If it is an odd Rasi there and there is under aspect of a male Graha, thief is a male, otherwise a female.

    Sloka 4.

From Navamsa in which Lagna falls, nature of lost article is judged. From Decanate rising, form of thief should be

judged. From rising Rasi, direction (where theft has occurred), place and the time of theft are to be judged.

    Sloka 5.

Ages of Grahas Chandra, Mangala, Budha, Sukra, Guru, Surya and Sani are respectively those of: (1) suckling child,

    (2) boy, (3) celibate, (4) young man, (5) middle aged person, (6) old man and (7) a very old man.

    Sloka 6.

If Lagna falls in Rasi Simha and Surya and Chandra are placed therein and if the same is aspected by Sani and

Mangala, thief will be blind. If weak Chandra is placed in 12th Bhava, his left eye will be blind and if the weak Surya is

placed in 12th Bhava, his right eye will be blind.

    Sloka 7.

If a malefic is placed in 6th Bhava, in the limb represented by its Rasi or Bhava where a malefic is placed, injury is to be

foretold. And whatever has been told by me at the time of birth regarding moles, marks and forms, all that is to be suitably used here in this enquiry.

    Sloka 8.

If Lagna falls in 1st Decanate (0° to 10°), article has been stolen. In 2nd Decanate, it indicates that article has fallen

somewhere. 3rd Decanate indicates that person has kept article somewhere and then forgotten. Thus it is to be

guessed. Even if lost, it is within house and has not gone out of the door, when 3rd Decanate rises.

    Sloka 9.

Direction where stolen article has gone is to be told from Graha placed in Kendras. If it is not possible, direction is to

be told from Rasi of Lagna. Distance is to be told from number of Navamsa elapsed, country from 5th Navamsa in Lagna. This number will give distance in Yojana. One Yojana may be taken roughly as equal to a mile.

    Sloka 10.

If there is Sukra in 2nd Bhava and Guru in 12th Bhava, with a benefic in Lagna, stolen article is got back. If Chandra is

in Lagna, it is got in direction of Rasi of Lagna and if Surya is in direction, it is got in direction of Lagna.

    Sloka 11.

If there is Full Chandra in Lagna or query or if there is a benefic in a Sirshodaya Rasi aspected by a benefic or if there

is a very strong benefic in 11th Bhava, lost article is got back quickly.

    Sloka 12.

If there be a benefic in 2nd, 3rd or 4th Bhava or if the same be in 4th, 7th and 10th Bhava, stolen article is got back without

    any doubt.

    Sloka 13.

If Full Chandra be posited in Lagna and if aspected by Guru or Sukra or if benefics be placed in Kendra and

Upachayasthanas (3rd, 6th and 11th) or if benefics be placed in 2nd and Upachayasthanas, stolen articles are got back.

    Sloka 14.

If Full Chandra, Guru, Sukra or Budha is placed in Lagna, stolen article is got back. Or if benefics are placed in 7th

Bhava, stolen article is got back.

    Sloka 15.

If there is a benefic in 2nd or 3rd Bhava from Lagna or from 4th Bhava, stolen article is got back definitely.

    Sloka 16.

If Lagna of query falls on Rasi of a malefic, aspected by a malefic, stolen article will not be got back. If on Lagna there

is a benefic, aspected by another benefic, stolen article will be definitely got back.

  • Daivajna Vallabha (Prasna) by Varaha Mihira Edited by Chistabo, Jan 2012

    14

    Sloka 17.

If 7th Bhava falls in Rasi Simha, Vrischika or Kumbha and these Rasis contain in their own Navamshas and if 7th Bhava

is aspected by malefics, article will not be got back. Or if Mangala is placed in 8th Bhava in these Navamshas, lost article will not be got back.

Here ends Chapter IX entitled "Getting or not getting lost articles" in the work Daivajna Vallabha by Varahamihira.

Chapter X Queries relating to objects held in the mind or in the fist

    Sloka 1.

If on Lagna Chandra or Budha is situated and if there is aspect of Chandra or Budha on Lagna, querist is thinking

about some girl. If Sani is placed in Lagna, querist is thinking about an old woman. Surya and Guru similarly placed indicate a middle-aged woman, while Sukra and Mangala would indicate a young woman. If query relates to a male,

these combinations have to be interpreted as indicating boy, old man, middle-aged man and a young man.

    Sloka 2.

If Sukra, Surya and Sani are placed in 7th Bhava, the thought is about wife of another person. Guru indicates one's

own wife. Chandra or Budha would show a courtesan. Sani, Rahu or Ketu will show that query is regarding a woman belonging to a low caste. From degree of Chandra, the age of woman under query is to be judged.

    Sloka 3.

Query relates to one's own self, brother, son, mother, sister or enemy, according as Graha endowed with strength is situated in Lagna, 3rd, 5th, 4th or 6th Bhava.

    Sloka 4.

Query is concerning one's wife, religion or preceptor, according as strong Graha is placed in 7th, 9th or 10th Bhava. Strength of Graha is to be guessed from its placement in own Navamsa, Navamsa of a friendly Graha or Navamsa of

    an inimical Graha.

    Sloka 5.

If on Lagna there rises a movable Rasi or 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th Navamshas of a Chara Rasi, query in mind is regarding life

abroad. If any Graha moves further away from 7th Bhava and returns to 7th Bhava with retrograde motion, person who

has gone abroad will return. If Graha is not retrograde, person will not return.

    Sloka 6.

Rasis Tula, Vrischika, Simha and Kanya are long. Dhanus, Makara, Karkataka and Mithuna are of medium length.

Mesha, Vrisabha, Meena and Kumbha are short. Length (or size) of an article is to be predicted from length of respective Rasis.

    Sloka 7.

Surya and Mangala are red in color. Chandra and Sukra are white. Budha is green. Guru is yellow and Sani is black.

    Sloka 8.

Surya is square in form. Mangala is round. Budha is tall. Chandra is also tall. Guru is round. Sukra is thin. Sani has a long form. Thus has been told forms and shapes of Grahas. In case of silent queries, shape, color and form of article is

to be divined from shape, color and form of strongest Graha at the moment of query.

    Sloka 9.

Query regarding mineral, vegetable or animal: if a Graha situated in its own Navamsa aspects its own Navamsa

falling in Lagna or a Trine Bhava or is placed therein, query is relating to a mineral and this is certain. If Graha be

situated in Navamsa belonging to another Graha but aspects its own Navamsa, falling on Lagna or a Trine Bhava,

  • Daivajna Vallabha (Prasna) by Varaha Mihira Edited by Chistabo, Jan 2012

    15

query concerns a living being. If Graha is placed in Navamsa of another Graha and is aspecting Navamsa of another Graha falling on Lagna or a Trine Bhava, query relates to a vegetable.

    Sloka 10.

If Graha is placed in an odd Rasi, Navamsas denote query about mineral, vegetable and animal respectively. If Graha

is posited in an even Rasi, this should be considered in reverse order, i.e. 1st Navamsa represent animals, 2nd

vegetables and 3rd minerals. This in short is method to be adopted in silent queries.

    Sloka 11.

If Surya and Mangala are strong, they indicate a query regarding some mineral. If Sani or Budha is strong, query

relates to vegetables. If Chandra, Guru and Sukra are strong, query is regarding some animal.

    Sloka 12.

If Mesha, Simha or Vrischika rises as Lagna and the same is conjoined with or aspected by Mangala or Surya, query

relates to some mineral. If Mithuna, Kanya, Makara or Kumbha rises as Lagna and the same is conjoined to or aspected by Sani or Budha, query relates to a vegetable.

    Sloka 13.

If Vrisabha, Karkataka, Dhanus, Tula or Meena rises as Lagna and the same is conjoined with or aspected by Chandra,

Sukra and Guru, query will be concerning some animal. If Grahas of different kinds conjoin or aspect Lagna, query

will be concerning mixture of corresponding categories (i.e. mineral, vegetable and animal).

Here ends Chapter X entitled "Queries relating to objects held in the mind or in the fist" in the work Daivajna Vallabha by Varahamihira.

    Chapter XI Queries regarding rains

    Sloka 1.

If Sani and Sukra happen to be placed in 7th Bhava from Surya and Chandra or in 4th or 8th Bhava from Lagna or in 2nd

or 3rd Bhava from Lagna, rainfall occurs immediately without any delay, during the rainy season.

    Sloka 2.

During bright fortnight (Sukla Paksha) of the month, if benefic Grahas occupy watery Rasis and be placed in an

Kendra Bhava, 2nd or 3rd Bhava or if Chandra is placed in Lagna identical with a watery Rasi, it should be predicted that rainfall is sure to occur.

    Sloka 3.

If Chandra or Sukra is placed in Lagna identical with Karkataka, Makara and Meena, rainfall occurs. Similarly, Sukra and Chandra placed in an Kendra Bhava aspected by benefics, produce rains.

    Sloka 4.

If Lagna falls in a watery Rasi and if Chandra is placed there, aspected by Sukra, heavy rains occur. Sukra also

similarly placed and aspected by Chandra produces heavy rains.

Thus ends Chapter XI entitled "Queries regarding rains" in the work Daivajna Vallabha by Varahamihira.

Chapter XII Query relating to marriage

    Sloka 1.

If Chandra is placed in 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th or 11th Bhava from Lagna, aspected by Surya, Guru and Budha, querist is to be

told that marriage is sure to take place. Similarly benefics placed in Kendras and Trines cause marriage to occur.

    Sloka 2.

Under these combinations, if a benefic is posited in 7th Bhava, he will get a good (beautiful) wife. If a malefic is in 7th

Bhava, he will get a woman devoid of any beauty.

    Sloka 3.

If Sani is placed in 7th Bhava identical with an even Rasi, querist is sure to get a damsel for marriage. If it be in odd

Rasi, he will not get any girl. So say masters on this subject.

    Sloka 4.

If Chandra is placed in 2nd, 7th or Uphachaya Bhava, aspected by Guru, he gets a young woman. If same Chandra is

associated with a malefic Graha or is aspected by malefic Grahas, he will not get any woman.

    Sloka 5.

If at a query (relating to marriage), Chandra is placed in 6th or 8th Bhava, person dies in 8th year after marriage.

    Sloka 6.

If a malefic is placed in Lagna and another malefic is placed in 7th Bhava therefrom, person dies within seven years

    after marriage.

    Sloka 7.

If Chandra is placed in Lagna and Mangala is placed in 7th Bhava, person lives just for 8 months after marriage.

    Sloka 8.

If Sukra or Budha is placed in Lagna or 8th Bhava, in a query relating to marriage, girl will surely become a widow. If

Mangala is placed in 7th Bhava, girl dies before marriage. Location of a strong Mangala in 7th Bhava of a female nativity, where it is not exalted or in his own Rasi, is dangerous for longevity of husband. This is quite understandable

as Mangala in 7th Bhava harms Bhava of husband (7th) as well as Bhava of his longevity (8th from 7th), i.e. 2nd. We should therefore examine both 2nd and 7th Bhavas for this purpose.

    Sloka 9.

If Surya is placed in 7th Bhava, children born to this girl will die. If Surya is placed in Lagna, he will make her immoral

and unchaste. There is no doubt regarding this.

    Sloka 10.

Chandra and Budha placed in 6th Bhava, if associated with malefics, will make girl ill-tempered and unlucky. If

Chandra and Sukra are placed in 11th or 7th Bhava, girl will become unchaste. If in these places Budha and Sukra are

associated with malefics, girl surely becomes a widow. In all Bhavas mentioned in Sloka, if there exists association with malefics, girl becomes a prostitute.

    Sloka 11.

If Chandra occupies any of 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th or 11th Bhava counted from Lagna, aspected by Guru, Surya and Budha and

not by other, it indicates that marriage is to take place immediately. If it is aspected by malefics, it will cause obstacles

    in arrangement of marriage.

    Sloka 12.

If strong Sukra aspects Budha or Chandra placed in Lagna, he will get a girl without any delay. If it is aspected by

    malefics, he will not.

  • Daivajna Vallabha (Prasna) by Varaha Mihira Edited by Chistabo, Jan 2012

    17

    Sloka 13.

If Lagna and Chandra fall in movable Rasis and if both are aspected by Sukra, with a malefic placed in an Kendra

Bhava, he will get a good girl as bride.

Here ends Chapter XII entitled "Query relating to marriage" in the work Daivajna Vallabha by Varahamihira.

Chapter XIII Birth of male or female children

    Sloka 1.

In a query relating to pregnancy, if Lagna falls in a fixed Rasi and is aspected by benefics, it should be told that

woman is surely pregnant - this is the opinion of Yavanacharya.

    Sloka 2.

If Sani occupies an odd Rasi, he causes birth of a son. If he occupies an even Rasi, he causes birth of a girl - thus it has

been told by Brihaspati, the great celestial Astrologer.

    Sloka 3.

If Lagna falls in a number of male Vargas (Rasi, Drekkana, Navamsa, Dwadasamsa etc. are owned by a male Graha)

and be strongly aspected by male Grahas, surely a son will be born. If query concerns marriage, girl will surely get a

    good bridegroom.

    Sloka 4.

Yavanacharya has declared that if Lagna falls on a female Rasi or female Navamsa or female Drekkana and is not

aspected by any male Graha, a girl child will be born.

    Sloka 5.

If Lagna, Guru and Chandra be placed in odd Rasis and in Rasis and Navamsas owned by male Grahas and be

endowed with strength, a son will be born. If these are placed in an even Rasi and Navamsas owned by female Grahas, a girl will be born. If Guru and Surya be in an odd Rasi, birth of a son is to be predicted. If Chandra, Sukra

and Rahu are placed in an even Rasi and an even Navamsa, birth of a girl is to be predicted.

    Sloka 6.

Number of nurses attending the lady during delivery will be equal to number of Grahas placed between Lagna and

Chandra. So many nurses will be outside delivery room as there are Grahas in visible half of Zodiac and so many will be inside as there are Grahas in invisible half.

    Sloka 7.

Time of conception: if in a male nativity Surya and Sukra are placed in Upachayasthanas identical with Rasis of their

Navamsas and be endowed with strength, conception will take place (i.e. their wives will conceive and child will be

born). Similarly, if in case of females Mangala and Chandra are similarly situated, conception will take place.

    Sloka 8.

If Chandra is placed in Navamsa of Sani or in its own Navamsa or be conjoined with Sani in 4th Bhava, lamp has been

already extinguished. This condition can be applied to natal and prenatal charts also.

    Sloka 9.

If Lagna and Chandra are placed between two malefics without being aspected by benefics, woman in pregnancy

    dies.

  • Daivajna Vallabha (Prasna) by Varaha Mihira Edited by Chistabo, Jan 2012

    18

    Sloka 10.

Grahas Sukra, Mangala, Guru, Surya, Chandra, Sani, Budha, Lord of Lagna, Surya and Chandra are Lords of the

months of pregnancy starting from the time of conception.

    Sloka 11.

These Grahas cause abortion in months pertaining to them, when they are in enemy's camp, defeated in planetary

war, conjoined with enemies, placed in heliacal setting or are afflicted otherwise.

    Sloka 12.

Color and shapes of Grahas: Surya is red and cruel. Chandra is beautiful. Mangala has fierce eyes. Budha is extremely

modest. Guru is ever in the company of learned men. Sukra is one-eyed. Sani is lame (Sani if afflicted gives trouble in legs. Hence called lame). These Grahas when placed in Lagna produce similar results to native. Due consideration

must be given to their strengths, however.

Here ends Chapter XIII entitled "Birth of male or female children" in the work Daivajna Vallabha by Varahamihira.

    Chapter XIV Miscellaneous matters

    Sloka 1.

Fall is to be divined from Lagna, prosperity from 4th, exile from 10th and return from 7th Bhava. All these matters are to

be judged from position of Grahas at the time if query in these Bhavas. If a strong benefic Graha is placed in 4th Bhava,

say that person who had gone out has entered his house.

    Sloka 2.

Query relating to servant and master: there will be good results to both servant and master if benefics are placed in

2nd, 8th and 7th Bhava and malefics in 3rd and 6th Bhava. But if situation be reverse, i.e. if 2nd , 7th and 8th Bhava are occupied by malefics and 3rd and 6th Bhava are occupied by benefics, there will be discord and strife between master

and servant and there will be staying away from home.

    Sloka 3.

If benefics occupy 8th and 2nd Bhava, long-life is to be predicted for querist. But if malefics occupy these Bhavas, his

    life will be short.

    Sloka 4.

If benefics occupy 10th and 4th Bhava, there will be happiness and prosperity. If these Bhavas are occupied by malefics,

happiness and prosperity of native will suffer. If benefics are placed in 2nd and 11th Bhava, acquisition of wealth is to

    be predicted.

    Sloka 5.

If malefics occupy Lagna of query, there will be bodily ailments and strifes to querist. If malefics occupy 4th Bhava, he will not be happy. There will arise quarrels in house and enmity with relatives.

    Sloka 6.

Grahas placed in 7th Bhava produce obstacles during travel. The wise declare evil results for Karma if malefics are posited in 10th Bhava. Desired object will be accomplished with great difficulty, if concerned Bhavas are not aspected

    by benefics.

    Sloka 7.

If Chandra is conjoined with or aspected by malefic Grahas, there will be quarrels with women folk. Or if there be

malefic Grahas placed in 4th and 7th Bhava, the same result is to be understood.

  • Daivajna Vallabha (Prasna) by Varaha Mihira Edited by Chistabo, Jan 2012

    19

    Sloka 8.

In a query regarding the whereabouts of one's father, if Surya is placed in 8th Bhava from Lagna, combined with or

aspected by a benefic, his father has already gone away from place where he was residing previously to some other place.

    Sloka 9.

Now tastes pertaining to Grahas are told: this is useful in a query regarding diet. Surya indicates pungent taste,

Chandra saltish, Mangala bitter, Budha mixture of various tastes, Guru sweet, Sukra sour and Sani astringent. Graha

in an Kendra Bhava is to be taken as strong and taste indicated by the same is to be told as being predominant in food taken by querist.

    Sloka 10.

Taste ascribed to Graha that aspects Lagna or failing in one placed in a Kendra is to be proclaimed. Other tastes are to

be told in order of powerful Grahas according to their strength.

    Sloka 11.

Taste will be good if Graha is placed in a Rasi belonging to a benefic Graha. It will be without any taste if Rasi belongs

to a malefic. If Graha is retrograde, person who is dining will not eat things of that taste already placed in the plate.

But will taste it when given afterwards.

    Sloka 12.

When Lagna falls in a fixed Rasi and query relates to travel or return of a person gone abroad, there will be neither

travel nor any return. Disease will not subside in a query relating to disease. There will be no loss of wealth in a query relating to money matters. Patient will not die in a query concerning disease. If it concerns a person gone abroad, he

will not be lost (i.e. he will come back safe). If query is regarding victory or defeat, there will be no defeat. But if Lagna

falls in a movable Rasi, all these results will be reverse.

    Sloka 13.

If a dual Rasi rises, mixed results will happen. Similar results are to be told when movable and fixed Navamsas rise. If there is benefic aspect over Lagna and Chandra, all types of good results will happen. If both are aspected by malefic

    Grahas, bad results will occur.

    Sloka 14.

Bhavas, Lagna onwards, represent head, eyes, ears, nose, cheek, chin and face respectively. Same Bhavas are

representatives of limbs neck, shoulders, hands, sides (flanks), heart, bosom and navel. They also signify bladder,

genitals, anus, thighs, knees and feet. In this way, representation of limbs of human body by various Bhavas according to rising of 1st, 2nd and 3rd Drekkanas of rising respectively to be understood.

    Sloka 15.

There will be a wound or sore on that part of body signified by Bhava, which is conjoined with or aspected by a

malefic. There will be a mole etc. on Bhava combined with or aspected by a benefic Graha. If that Graha happens to be

placed in its own Rasi or Navamsa or a fixed Rasi, wound or mole will be from the time of birth. Otherwise it will be one caused at later stage. Cause of the scar would be as follows: Sani - through stone or wind-trouble; Mangala - fire,

weapons or poison; Budha - through wood or some animal; Chandra - through being pierced by horns of an animal or by water. Other benefic Grahas produce the scar through some good cause.

    Sloka 16.

Bhava wherein three Grahas along with Budha are situated, produces invariably a wound or a mole in the part of

body signified by that Bhava. If a malefic is situated in 6th Bhava, in part of body signified by Rasi in which 6th Bhava

falls, wounds are caused. If that Graha is aspected by benefic Grahas, there will be a mole or mark on that part. If it be only conjoined with benefic Grahas, there will be just a mark.

    Sloka 17.

In body of beasts, Rasis Mesha onwards, represent head, face, legs, shoulders, back, breast, sides, belly, rectum, feet, genitals, buttocks and tail.

    Sloka 18. - 22.

Ascertain measure in Anguls of shadow of the Shanku at the time of query. With help of this shadow, find out

longitude of Lagna at the time according to rules given in "Grah Laghav" (we can find out straight away also Lagna) - leave Rasis and degrees of Lagna and taking only the minutes, multiply minutes by length of the shadow. Divide

product by 7 and find out remainder. In table given above multiply figure of remainder with its corresponding figure shown under it (under 1, 2, 3, 4 etc.) Divide product by 71. Take remainder. Deduct from this remainder figure 5, 21,

14 etc. shown under Surya, Chandra, Mangala etc. Go on deducting these figures until further deduction is not possible. The number that cannot be deducted will show the number of days etc. in which work will be accomplished.

Number will be days if the non-diminishable number falls under Surya or Mangala. It will be so many fortnights if

undiminishable number falls under Sukra or Chandra. It will be so many months if undiminishable number falls under Guru. It will be so many years if it falls under Sani.

    Sloka 23.

At a query regarding conception, victory, defeat, destruction of enemies, meeting with new persons and acquisition of

wealth, the time of fruition of good and bad results is to be declared in this way after careful thought.

    Sloka 24.

Query relating to dreams: in a query relating to dreams, if Surya is placed in Lagna, he has seen fire, a lamp, red cloth

or a King in dream. If Chandra is placed in Lagna, he has seen white cloth, white flower, scent or a woman in dream.

    Sloka 25.

Mangala placed in Lagna indicates that he would have seen coral, gold, blood or fresh meat of an animal. Budha in

Lagna denotes dreams about travel by air. Guru there would point to dreams of meeting gods and relatives.

    Sloka 26.

Sukra in Lagna tells about dreams regarding swimming in water. Sani therein indicates climbing mountains and lofty

places. If many Grahas are placed in Lagna, mixed results are to be told.

    Sloka 27.

If there is a Graha in Lagna placed in inimical Rasi or in debilitation or defeated in planetary war, person has seen a

bad dream. If there is a Graha in setting placed in Lagna, querist will meet with defeat.

    Sloka 28.

Time of fructification of results is to be told from the number of Rasis between Lagna and Chandra. The results of

one's own dreams are to be guessed as told above. Thus Yavaneshwara has declared.

    Sloka 29.

    Seven classes of letters beginning with (1) v (2) d (3) p (4) v (5) r (6) i and (7) and (k) are allotted to Grahas Surya,

Mangala, Sukra, Budha, Guru Sani and Chandra respectively. From 1st letter of query, Lagna should be determined.

    Sloka 30.

Good and bad results are to be told to querist. If letter is 1st, 3rd or 5th of the class, odd Rasi belonging to Graha is to be

    fixed as Lagna.

    Sloka 31.

By the rest, i.e. 2nd and 4th letters, even Rasi belonging to Graha is to be taken as Lagna. This process is to be applied to

find out Lagna belonging to Sukra, Budha, Guru, Mangala and Sani, but not for Surya and Chandra, for they own one

Rasi each. Letters of Surya give Simha and those of Chandra Karkataka as Lagna.

    Sloka 32.

From that Lagna all the good and bad results are to be proclaimed as before. If the time of query cannot be determined

exactly, this method is to be adopted for fixing Lagna in dealing with queries.

    Chapter XV Judgment from Lagna

    Sloka 1.

Twelve Bhavas, Lagna onwards, represent body, treasure, fighting, vehicles, counsel, enemies, path, longevity, mind,

    occupation, gains and minister.

    Sloka 2.

Surya, Sani and Mangala spoil occupied Bhava excepting 3rd and 11th Bhava. Surya and Mangala do not spoil 10th

Bhava by their occupation. Benefics cause all Bhavas to flourish by their placement except 6th Bhava. But Sukra is not good in 7th Bhava. Chandra is not auspicious in 8th Bhava. Nor is it good for Bhava falling in Rasi of Simha.

    Sloka 3.

Benefics placed in Lagna bestow good health, riches and comforts upon native. While placed in 2nd Bhava, they cause

acquisition of wealth. In 3rd Bhava, they cause increase in strength of army.

    Sloka 4.

If benefics are posited in 4th Bhava, there will be increase in prospects of vehicles and friends. While situated in 5th

Bhava, they cause benefits of good counsel. In 6th Bhava, benefics destroy enemies. Excepting Sukra, all other Grahas

are favorable for travel when placed in 7th.

    Sloka 5.

In 8th Bhava, benefics excepting Chandra protect life of person (i.e. they cause prolonged life for person). In 9th Bhava

they give fame and wealth. In 10th Bhava they produce victory in one's undertakings. In 11th they cause many gains. In 12th they cause increase in strength of army.

    Sloka 6.

If Mangala, Surya, Sani and Chandra are place in Lagna, there will arise murder, confinement in jail, death and fear respectively. If they are in 2nd Bhava, they cause decay of wealth. In 3rd Bhava they produce fame.

    Sloka 7.

In 4th Bhava, there will be loss of vehicles and friends. In 5th Bhava, they will cause leakage of secret counsel. In 6th

Bhava, they are good. They will cause destruction of enemies. If they be in 7th Bhava, they do not give good results.

Same (bad) is result if Sukra occupies 7th Bhava.

    Sloka 8.

In 8th Bhava, the aforesaid malefics cause early death. When they are placed in 9th Bhava, they produce troubles to

army. In 10th Bhava Mangala and Surya produce victory. But Sani therein will cause defeat.

    Sloka 9.

In 11th Bhava all of them indicate victory. In 12th Bhava they cause division and betrayal in army. Results produced by

malefics in Bhava other than Upachaya (i.e. 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th) are exactly opposite in nature to those produced by benefics in these Bhavas.

    Sloka 10.

Even if a malefic is happily posited in Lagna, it is praiseworthy. A benefic Graha, if afflicted, is not good in Lagna. A retrograded Graha is not good if it is placed in an Kendra Bhava. Its day, Vargas (Decanate, Navamsa etc.) and its stay

in Lagna also will not prove to be auspicious.

    Sloka 11. - 17.

Interpretation of Decanates. Matters to be judged from 1st Decanate of Lagna of query upto last Decanate of 12th Bhava

are respectively: (1) King, (2) his commander-in-chief, (3) royal Astrologer, (4) priest and doctor, servants, (5) status

and prowess, (6) dealings and army, (7) food, (8) sleeping, (9) sitting, (10) vehicles, (11) seat and couch, (12) eating and drinking, (13) prince, (14) counsel and strength, (15), (16), (17) and (18) enemy, (19) resting of army, (20) wealth, (21)

  • Daivajna Vallabha (Prasna) by Varaha Mihira Edited by Chistabo, Jan 2012

    22

magistrate imposing punishments on the guilty, (22) troubles to army, (23) mutiny in army, (24) commander-in-chief, (25) health of army, (26) soldiers, (27) four-fold strength, (28) actions, (29) treasury, (30) fructification of results, (31)

meritorious deeds, (32) actions, (33) wealth, (34) soldiers, (35) worship, (36) end of travel.

    Sloka 18.

These are matters relating to 36 Decanates beginning from Lagna of query. Good and bad results relating to matters

which I have declared is to be foretold according to conjunction and aspect on Decanates of benefic and malefic Grahas.

    Sloka 19. - 20.

Results from Navamsas: results arising from Lagna falling in Navamsas of seven Grahas beginning from Surya and

ending with Sani are: (1) loss of vehicles, (2) loss of prowess and return to home with difficulty, (3) fear from fire, (4)

acquisition of friends, (5) gain of wealth, (6) various material pleasures and (7) death and destruction.

    Sloka 21.

Whatever has been declared as result for a particular Graha in Lagna, the same is generated by the corresponding

Graha represented by Lord of Navamsa Rasi. If Navamsa is owned by a benefic, a portion of army belonging to one party renders help to army of King who has come to attack.

    Sloka 22.

King who goes to conquer in Rasi and Navamsa belonging to a benefic gets help from army of enemy.

    Sloka 23.

Whatever has been declared as results for rising Rasi, the same is to be told as result of rising Dwadasamsa,

(Dwadasamsa is 1/12th portion of a Rasi extending over 2° 30'). What has been said as result for Navamsa, the same is to be told for Trimsamsa (1/30th portion of a Rasi extending over 1°) also.

    Sloka 24.

Combinations leading to destruction of enemies: if query Lagna of invader falls in Rasi of his Janma Lagna or Janma

Rasi or an Upachaya Rasi counted from his natal Lagna or Chandra Rasi or contains Lord of Lagna at birth or Lord of

Chandra Rasi, destruction of enemy will be result. If said Yoga in Lagna falls in 4th Bhava from Lagna etc. of enemy or in 7th from that of querist, enemy is destroyed.

    Sloka 25.

If Rasi of Lagna, its Lord, Janma Rasi or its Lord in horoscope of enemy falls in 7th or 4th Bhava of chart of query, death

of enemy is to be foretold.

    Sloka 26. – 27.

If rising Rasi is possessed by Surya, traveler will be troubled by hunger and thirst, will lose his way, will have eye

trouble etc. If by Chandra, travels in connection with worship of some deity alone should be undertaken. Rasis of

Mangala there will cause troubles from disorders of bile, serpents, weapons and fire. Rasis of Budha in Lagna will produce happiness, acquisition of desired objects and fame. Rasis of Guru in 1st Bhava produce gains of wealth, status,

and destruction of enemies. Rasis of Sukra on Lagna cause acquisition of wife and gems and success in undertakings.

If rising Rasi is possessed by Sani, there will be danger from fire and insult from low people.

    Sloka 28.

Sages have declared thus - even though Vrisabha, Vrischika and Karkataka are favorable for journeys, they are

inauspicious while falling on Lagna or 12th Bhava.

    Sloka 29.

If Lagna falls in Rasi of Meena or its Navamsa in any Rasi in Lagna, there will be confusion as to direction of

destination or correct path to be taken or there may arise other types of troubles and difficulties. One should not undertake a journey when Lagna of travel falls in a watery Rasi or a watery Navamsa.

    Sloka 30.

Discussion regarding Hora: all rules discussed above, being the verdicts of Sages, are authentic by themselves. But it is

worthwhile to consider strength of Hora at the time of travel. [Hora is of three kinds: (1) Tiryang mukhi = facing

across, (2) Urdhvamukhi = facing upwards, (3) Adhomukhi = facing downwards. Hora is ½ a Rasi and extends over

  • Daivajna Vallabha (Prasna) by Varaha Mihira Edited by Chistabo, Jan 2012

    23

15°. Each Rasi contains two Horas]. Hora in which Surya is placed is to be reckoned Tiryangmukhi and next Horas in order Urdhvamukhi, Adhomukhi, again Tiryangmukhi and so on.

    Sloka 31.

[Results of Yatra Lagna falling in different kinds of Hora are told now]. If Lagna falls in U-Hora, objects are achieved

with ease without any difficulty. T-Hora there produces difficulties, efforts and losses. A-hora causes defeat and

destruction of army and makes return to home difficult. All Horas produce good results if they are aspected by their Lords and are not aspected by malefic Grahas.

    Sloka 32.

Lords of directions from East to North are respectively Surya, Mangala, Guru, Budha, Sukra, Sani and Chandra.

Yamardha Rahu resides during 1st half - duration of 3 hours i.e. for 1 ½ hour in direction of Lord of the day. In next it

moves to 6th direction there from and so on.

    Sloka 33.

Time from commencement of the day to the time in question is to be expressed in Ghatikas and same is to be

multiplied by 2 and then divided by 5. From quotient the number of hours elapsed will be known. Lord of next hour is Lord of the hour of query. Others are to be reckoned in order Surya, Sukra, Budha, Chandra, Sani, Guru and

    Mangala.

    Sloka 34.

A person gets success in such undertakings as theft, robbery, cheating and war if the same are performed during

Karanas Vyatipata, Bhadra and Vaidhriti, rise of Lagna possessed by a malefic Graha and during the days of malefics.

    Sloka 35.

Rasis Mesha, Simha and Dhanus are reckoned as representing Eastern direction, Vrisabha, Kanya and Makara in

South, Mithuna, Tula and Kumbha in West, and Karkataka, Vrischika and Meena in North. In whatever Rasi is Chandra posited, that Rasi is considered to be facing person on journey.

    Sloka 36.

If [HINDI] is on left, Chandra in front, Rahu at back, there will be victory in war. If Chandra is on right, object will be

achieved. If it is on left, there will be troubles and losses. If it be on backside, death is sure in war.

    Sloka 37.

If there is a strong Graha in 5th Bhava to Graha who is Lord of direction of journey, that Graha will prevent his travel

in desired direction, but will make him travel in direction ascribed to it.

    Sloka 38.

Even if one among Guru, Budha, Sukra and Sani is placed in 5th Bhava from Mangala or if Chandra is placed in 5th or

9th Bhava from Surya, person will not be able to go in desired direction. Stronger of two Grahas mentioned above will

take him in direction ascribed to it.

    Sloka 39.

Sani and Mangala or Surya and Chandra or Sukra and Mangala, if placed mutually in Trines (5th and 9th from each

other), they destroy results told previously, but will make person travel in their directions.

    Sloka 40.

If Budha, Guru, Sukra and Sani are placed in Trine to Mangala or if Chandra is placed in Trine to Surya or if a strong

Graha is placed in 5th place to Lord of direction in which querist desires to go, person performs journey comfortably in other direction.

    Sloka 41.

In order to discern results visible and invisible, an Astrologer should interpret queries after understanding the work on Horary science, bearing the name "Daivajna Vallabha" composed by Mihira.

    Sloka 42.

This science of Astrology clearly shows results of whatever merit and demerit has been earned through one's actions in previous birth, like a lamp which makes different things visible in darkness.

  • Daivajna Vallabha (Prasna) by Varaha Mihira Edited by Chistabo, Jan 2012

    24

    Sloka 43.

Illustrious Varahamihira, who was son of Adityadasa, who got instructions and knowledge of science of Astrology

from his father (Aditya), who belonged to Gotra called Kapiththala, who got boons and blessings from Surya God, and who was a native of country of Avanti, composed this work after careful scrutiny of opinions of different Sages

    with great effort.

    Sloka 44.

Whether result of query will materialize in years or months etc. should be decided from fact whether Lord of

Navamsa of Lagna at query time represents hours or months or fortnights etc. How many years, months etc. would be involved should then be decided on the basis of the number of Navamsas traversed in Lagna.

Here ends Chapter XV entitled "Judgment from Lagna" in the work Daivajna Vallabha by Varahamihira.
