Worker launched off bulk carrier A WORKER on a Maltese bulk carrier was launched off the ship in a freefall lifeboat and spent hours in waters off Western Australia's north after the release system was incorrectly reset in Singapore. the Aquarosa was en route to Kwinana, south of Perth, on March 1 when the lifeboat was inadvertently released during a routine inspection, seriously injuring an engineer, who was in the orange vessel at the time. He had noted in Singapore that the lifeboat release system hydraulics appeared to be losing oil, so he topped-up the pump with oil and moved its handle three or four times.

He intended to pressurise the system a little to see if he could identify any obvious oil leaks, but the boat shuddered and began to slide down the launching rails. Knowing that the boat had been released and that he was unable to get out, he took a seat and attempted to put on the seatbelt. The alarm was raised on the ship but it took about five hours to get the boat back on to the stern, with a 1.5 metre swell making manoeuvring and securing the lifeboat difficult. Lines were thrown in an attempt to secure it but became stuck in the propeller, and a pilot ladder was deployed, but the engineer could not climb it because he was injured. He was eventually helped onto the ship via a lowered gangway and later treated onshore for a fractured kneecap.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said in a recently-released preliminary report that measures had been implemented to prevent such an accident occurring again, including installing a safety pin that can be placed into the release hook during inspections and maintenance. Strainstall supply load pins for the Shell Stones project in the Gulf of Mexico

Strainstall UK Limited are proud to have been selected to work alongside SBM offshore on the prestigious Shell Stones project, which is an ultra-deep Oil and Gas development in the Gulf of Mexico and is currently the deepest production facility in the world at approximately 2900metres. The project involves the use of an FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) which has a forward mounted turret with a disconnectable buoy (Buoyant Turret Mooring or BTM) allowing it to weathervane in normal conditions and disconnect from the FPSO upon the approach of a hurricane so that the FPSO can sail to a safer area. The unique BTM design required six specially designed load pins

Page 4: DAILY COLLECTION OF MAR ITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2014 – 100

to measure the forces between the Buoy and the FPSO as they are an integral component of the detachable buoy system, and a critical element to ensure the safety of the FPSO and BTM. A custom design was required to meet SBM’s requirements and to incorporate the unique features, and Strainstall, with over 40 years experience in designing special application load pins, were ideally placed to design and manufacture such a loadpin. In addition to the design, manufacture and testing of the load pin a comprehensive documentation package was specified by SBM, as is customary for offshore projects. Again Strainstall are ideally placed to provide such documentation, having over 30 years experience of providing specific packages for a wide variety of industries including offshore oil and gas, marine, industrial, aerospace and nuclear. The challenging technical requirements of the pin meant Strainstall were contracted to produce an unusual shaped design which was ATEX and IECEx certified with internal amplifiers to monitor the clamping forces between the vessel and the detachable buoy. Apart from component loadcells and instrumentation, Strainstall also design and manufacture turnkey instrumentation packages for a wide variety of applications including Tendon and Riser Load Monitoring Systems, Winch and Mooring Chain Monitoring and Control, Environmental Monitoring, Integrated Marine Management Systems for FPSOs and Offshore Structures, and Berth Management Systems for onshore oil and gas terminals. All mechanical, electrical and electronic, and software design is performed in house to ensure best practice under Strainstall’s ISO EN900 accreditation, and the company also has in-house accredited personnel for the design, manufacture and installation of Hazardous Area equipment. The company also designs and manufactures a wide range of Quick Release Mooring Hooks for both onshore and offshore use. Stones will be Shell’s first FPSO in the Gulf of Mexico but Shell is already field operator for seven producing FPSOs globally. This includes at the Parque das Conchas (BC-10) project in Brazil, in partnership with Petrobras and ONGC. An FPSO design was selected to safely develop and produce the Stones ultra deep-water field. This concept design can handle a relative lack of infrastructure, a complex seabed, and unique reservoir properties. Tankers will transport oil from the Stones FPSO to US refineries, and gas will be transported by pipeline. SBM Offshore provides floating production solutions to the offshore energy industry, over the full product life-cycle. The Company is market leading in leased floating production systems with multiple units currently in operation, and has unrivalled operational experience in this field. The Company’s main activities are the design, supply, installation and operation of Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels. These are either owned and operated by SBM Offshore and leased to its clients or supplied on a turnkey sale basis.

An RNLI crew from Falmouth rescued two fishermen on Friday night after their yacht lost power in the Helford River.

The lifeboat was near Pendennis Point responding to a previous incident when at 10.43 Falmouth Coastguard asked for it to investigate a report of a yacht in difficulties off Durgan Beach.

The unnamed 24 yacht with two people on board was found secured to a mooring close to the beach having suffered engine failure, and having no sails. Local anglers on the shore had seen the yacht, which had limited safety equipment and no means of raising the alarm, drifting towards the beach before the crew had grabbed hold of an unoccupied mooring. The boat was taken in tow and returned to its berth in the Port Navas Creek. Source : this is the west country

GOLDEN ENERGY OFFSHORE ELECTS PLATFORM SUPPLY VESSELS FROM ULSTEIN

Golden Energy Offshore has entered into a shipbuilding contract with NANTONG RAINBOW OFFSHORE & ENGINEERING EQUIPMENTS CO.,LTD (ROC) in China for the construction of two Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs) of the PX121H design from ULSTEIN, with the option to build two more vessels of the same design. The two confirmed vessels are due for delivery from yard in Q1 and Q2 of 2016.

The vessels of the PX121H design are customised with an extra deck. They have an overall length of 83.4 metres and a beam of 18 metres and a deadweight (dwt) of 4,000 tonnes. The vessels will be equipped with the most modern solutions for DP2 (dynamic positioning), oil recovery and fire-fighting. The ships are recognised as medium-sized PSVs and have a cargo deck of approximately 850 square meters and under-deck capacities well suited for the intended operations. They can accommodate up to 30 persons, and will be built according to IMO’s SPS code for Special Purpose Ships. In addition, the vessels will be prepared for the installation of and AHC Crane with up to 67 tonnes capacity and an ROV mezzanine deck, which means the vessels can easily be configured for IMR (Inspection, Maintenance, Repair), ROV support, trenching and light subsea construction work.

Per Ivar Fagervoll, CEO in Golden Energy Offshore, says that: “Golden Energy Offshore is a fully integrated ship owning company located in Ålesund, Norway with all management functions in-house. We look forward to work through and complete this project together with the yard and ULSTEIN. In addition to design, ULSTEIN also delivers a significant package including equipment, supervision, commissioning and testing, which has been instrumental and a condition for us to enter into this series of vessels. There is also other Norwegian equipment on-board including the accommodation interior package, delivered in accordance with Norwegian standards.” “We are glad to announce this contract with Golden Energy Offshore, who is a new customer to us. The PX121 design has become very sought-after in a short period of time, and including these vessels, a total of 24 vessels for seven different ship-owners have been contracted,” says Gunvor Ulstein, CEO in Ulstein Group.

This shows that our initiatives in China has proven rightly, as it secures the quality and delivery precision for shipowners choosing to build ships there,” comments Lars Ståle Skoge, Sales and Marketing Manager in Ulstein Design & Solutions.

Underwater propeller blade straightening and cropping avoids drydocking

A ship with bent or cracked propeller blades might experience severe vibrations while sailing. The classification society might demand a repair before the vessel is allowed to sail on. By straightening the blades or cropping them, Hydrex can restore the propeller’s balance, resulting in a green light from the class for the vessel.

A propeller modification can easily be combined with any other maintenance or repair operation that needs to be carried out on the vessel, as was the case with several of the examples that can be found below. Thanks to the flexibility of the Hydrex teams this allows a vessel to keep to its schedule.

By taking advantage of the in-house developed cold straightening technique, damaged blades can be straightened underwater, allowing the ship to return to commercial operations

without the need to drydock. Optimum efficiency of the propellers can be restored by bringing the blades back close to their original form. A new model of the straightening machine was recently put into service. It is compatible with the existing model and is used to restore more severely bent propeller blades.

If straightening is not an option, the affected area on the blade will be cropped to restore the hydrodynamic balance. This is done to achieve the greatest possible efficiency for the vessel. This kind of repair is carried out with the propeller blade cutting equipment that was also developed by the Hydrex research department. First a detailed underwater inspection is performed by a Hydrex diver/technician team to obtain the exact parameters of the damage which are then used for a detailed calculation of the ideal cutting line. This allows the customer to know in advance what the result of the operation will be. He can then make an informed decision.

Hydrex teams are trained to work in extreme circumstances, as can be read here. Further examples of propeller repairs carried out by our teams can be found here and here.

Both the propeller blade straightening and the cropping equipment is available from the Hydrex headquarters in Antwerp and offices in Algeciras and Clearwater, Florida. This allows for a rapid mobilization teams to almost any location for emergency or other operations.

If one of your vessels has damaged propeller blades, or if you want to receive more information on propeller repairs, contact one of the offices. The Hydrex technical department can assist you and create a repair solution that fits your specific needs. [email protected]

Dryad Maritime release latest piracy statistics as ‘shock’ incidents blight overall

decrease in maritime crime The UK’s leading maritime intelligence provider, Dryad Maritime, has Wednesday 9th April, released its Q1 maritime crime figures which show an overall downturn in incidents across the Horn of Africa, the Gulf of Guinea and Southeast Asia since the same period last year. However, Dryad Maritime caution that ‘shock’ incidents and evolving criminal trends remain a very real threat to the shipping industry.

According to Dryad, the overall statistics show a 13% reduction in crime, but ‘shock’ incidents such as the kidnap and ransom of seafarers off the Niger Delta still present real and credible threats; six seafarers are still believed to be in captivity in Nigeria. Similarly, the hijack of MT Kerala from its Angolan anchorage with a subsequent theft of 13,000 tons of gasoil off the Niger Delta, has demonstrated the increasingly significant reach of Nigerian based criminals. These shock incidents made international headlines but across the Gulf of Guinea the media have failed to report the spate of incidents that has seen crew kidnapped and then released.

Ian Millen, Dryad Maritime’s Director of Intelligence: “This analysis gives cause for concern and serves as a reminder to all seafarers to remain vigilant and employ appropriate risk reduction measures in all high risk areas. Maritime criminals, from those off Nigeria to Somali pirates and those that operate in the archipelago of Southeast Asia remain very much in business and are capable of inflicting misery on seafarers. The first line of defence is to be aware of their presence and take measures to ensure that their criminal activities are countered”.

In the Horn of Africa, reported incidents appear to have risen from 9 in Q1 2013 to 15 in Q1 2014, but Dryad analysts attribute part of this data to a misinterpretation of events such as the misidentification of regional fishermen in the Southern Red Sea and off the coast of Oman. However, Dryad cautions against complacency, as a number of the reported incidents occurred are the result of Somali piracy.

Page 8: DAILY COLLECTION OF MAR ITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2014 – 100

“Somali pirates have not been totally eradicated. Armed attacks against MT Nave Atropos, south of Salalah in January and the Kenyan vessel, MV Andrea, close to the Somali coast in February have proved that broad containment of the threat does not mean it has been removed. On both occasions, the Somali attackers were only repelled by embarked armed security teams on the vessels concerned” adds Ian.

Across the waters of Southeast Asia, again the data highlights a decrease in reported maritime crime, with incidents dropping from 41 in Q1 2013 to 31 in Q1 2014. However, Dryad analysts note the incidents that have been logged possibly indicate a new modus operandi with criminals demonstrating a trend towards robbery from vessels underway in the Singapore Strait rather than at boarding those anchor.

“The Singapore Strait has attracted attention with a number of vessels boarded for robbery in the first quarter of the year; a spate of attacks that has coincided with a reduction of incidents in the anchorages off Pulau Nipah, possibly signalling a change of modus operandi for criminal gangs who may have shifted attention to boarding vessels that are underway” continues Ian.

To reflect the changing landscape of maritime crime and at the request of our clients Dryad have now revised their range of support to the industry. Their new package of services has been named PRISM – Professional Risk & Integrated Services Management - and offers clients an enhanced understanding of their available services and the levels of support recommended for different risk environments. It also provides a clearer picture on pricing, helping clients to manage their costs better. Karen Jacques, Dryad Maritime’s Chief Operating Officer: “The market is ever changing and although the level of risk appears to be decreasing in some locations it is still prevalent in others. Through the launch of PRISM we are offering customers a broad range of options, dynamically tailored to a vessels’ specific and current need, which challenges the traditional full dependence upon armed guard services. PRISM offers the ability to make informed decisions on the level and type of support required by providing a comprehensive risk analysis package. The service allows increased flexibility and fluidity to assess risk relevant to a vessels specific journey and to adapt quickly to changing situations in order to provide the most appropriate but also the most cost effective support options for the route”. Cargill earnings hit by commodity market disruptions

Cargill Inc said its quarterly earnings fell 28 percent, making it one of the largest companies yet to demonstrate how big commodity market disruptions this year have hurt its bottom line. Minneapolis-based Cargill, a top global commodities trader, was hit by a triple-whammy of unexpected events, including a surge in energy prices in January, rail backlogs, and the rejection of U.S. corn shipments by China. The problems are likely to have also hit Cargill peers such as Archer Daniels Midland Co and Bunge Ltd, which are due to report financial results in the coming weeks.

The coldest winter in 30 years catapulted regional U.S. natural gas prices to record highs, while power markets gyrated as producers struggled to keep supplies flowing to consumers. The harsh weather also snarled rail transport for products as diverse as coal, grain and ethanol. "In North America, we had record harvests and this extreme weather, so that created a backlog," Cargill spokeswoman Lisa Clemens said about the rail disruptions. "We couldn't move grain or deliver products as fast as we would otherwise."

Cargill, one of the world's largest privately held companies, reported net earnings of $319 million for the third quarter ended Feb. 28, down from $445 million a year earlier. Revenue was $32 billion, nearly even with a year earlier. A trading loss in U.S. power markets was related to an "unprecedented price spike" in late January, Cargill said. It added that part of the loss has been recovered but provided no details. In February, the head of physical trading at Cargill's North American thermal energy arm left the company. Cargill was reported by an industry publication to have lost more than $100 million in U.S. energy markets. Cargill said last month it would stop trading coal and dealing in gas and power in Europe, but denied the moves were linked to the U.S. loss. The company's focus historically has been on grains and agricultural markets, rather than energy. ADM, Bunge, Cargill and Louis Dreyfus Corp make up the so-called ABCD firms that dominate agricultural commodities. Cargill said earnings for its grain sector were down from a year earlier because of costs related to China's rejection of genetically modified U.S. corn. Further, there were generally "limited opportunities" in grain trading and storage, the company said. Grain dealers have struggled to find empty railway cars amid competition with oil shippers for track capacity. The surprise rejections by China were notable because it is important for Cargill to accurately assess the risks associated with counterparties in its transactions, said Chris Johnson, a credit analyst at Standard & Poor's. "The fact that there is a bit of a counterparty surprise in the corn thing, that's the one that is more of an eyebrow-raiser," he said. Johnson said he was confident Cargill's overall loss exposure was "well contained" and that the Chinese rejections were likely not material to the company's credit rating.

Cargill's comments about limited opportunities for grain handling were "somewhat surprising" and offer a mixed outlook for ADM and Bunge, said Ken Zaslow, analyst at BMO Capital Markets. Cargill said export demand for beef was strong, which is a positive sign for meat companies Tyson Foods Inc and Hormel Foods Corp, Zaslow said. Shares of ADM were down 0.9 percent at $43.20, while Bunge shares were up 1.7 percent at $79.73. Tyson Foods shares were

up 0.2 percent at $41.20, and Hormel was down 0.6 percent at $47.77. Source: Reuters (Reporting by Tom Polansek; Editing by Lisa Von Ahn; and Peter Galloway)

Newbuilding ordering activity bounces back, as ship owners return to shipyards

Ship owners have returned to yards around the world with an equal appetite for dry bulk carriers, tankers and containers, according to the latest shipbroker reports. According to figures compiled by Piraeus-based shipbroker Golden Destiny, over the course of the past week there've been a total of 61 vessels ordered, with an aggregate deadweight of 4,113,700 tons, while 32 of those transactions were done at an undisclosed prices. The capital invested for the remained of the 29 ships ordered stood at $1.8 million, according to Golden Destiny.

Out of the 61 ships, 14 were bulkers, 13 were tankers and 13 were containers, while the remaining 21 were special projects. In total, newbuilding activity was up by 126% on the week and 205% on the year. According to Golden Destiny, there was "firm contracting activity reported in all main conventional vessel segments, apart from gas tankers. Bulkers held 23% share of this week’s ordering activity; tankers 21% share, containers 21% share and special projects 34% share. At similar week in 2013, 20 fresh orders had been reported with focus on bulkers. (20 total new orders -13 bulkers, 2 tankers, 2 gas tankers, 2 containers and 1 special project). Compared with previous week’s levels, a large of 550% is recorded in the tanker segment (13 new orders from 2 last week) and 320% in the volume of new orders for special projects (521new orders from 5 in the last week.) A soft weekly increase of 27% is recorded in the bulker segment (14 new orders from 11 in the last week), while in the container segment no business was concluded last week compared with this week’s firm appetite for post panamax boxships", the shipbroker said. Meanwhile, in a

separate report, Clarkson Hellas noted that "Trafigura have extended their series of 206,000 DWT Newcastlemax at Qingdao Yangfan to a total of six vessels, having exercised two further options both for delivery in the first quarter of 2017. Hanjin Heavy have contracted a total of three firm 180,000 DWT Capesize. These orders are understood to be from two separate (yet unknown) buyers, with delivery of all three vessels due within 2016. Also in dry, Klaveness have declared two further options for 82,000 DWT Kamsarmax at Jiangsu New Yangzijiang. The latest vessels are planned for delivery in 2016 and takes the total series to eight. Klaveness have additionally declared an option for one 80,500 DWT combination carrier at Zhejiang Ouhua, due to deliver in early 2017. In the smaller sizes, Marine Capital has added a further three 38,500 DWT Handysize at Huatai Heavy taking the series to eight vessels, with the latest delivering in 2016", it said.

Clarkson Hellas added that "in Croatia, Uljanik have announced an order for two firm 49,500 DWT MR tankers from Trogir Maritime, delivering in the second half of 2015 and early 2016. D’Amico have also announced the addition of two further 50,000 DWT MRs at Hyundai Vinashin, due to deliver in the later part of 2016. Similarly, two orders to report this week in the container market; in the larger sizes Seaspan have ordered a further four firm 10,000 TEU container carriers at Jiangsu New Yangzijiang, which are a set of declared options, with delivery from the first quarter of 2016. Sainty Marine have taken an order for four firm 2,350 TEU feeder vessels from Universal Marine. The vessels are understood to be fully dual fuel capable and due to deliver from the later part of 2015 onwards".

In terms of demolition activity, Golden Destiny reported that "scrap prices appear for one more week accelerated with deals reported at excess $500/ldt for container vessels in India, which Bangladesh and Pakistan ship-recycling industries are trying to compete at these levels. However, Pakistan secured this week an aframax tanker with 15,646ldt built 1994 for $474/ldt asis Malaysia gas free. China and Turkey are holding a big price gap with Indian revivals, which seems that will not narrow in the short term. In terms of deadweight sent for scrap, there has been 14% weekly decrease with subdued reported activity for disposals in large vessel sizes. (1 aframax tanker reported for disposal). India is reportedly to have won 6 of the 15 demolition transactions, Bangladesh 1, Pakistan 1, China 0 and 7 reported vessel disposals at undisclosed demo country. Benchmark scrap prices in the Indian subcontinent region: $435-440/ldt for dry and $455-$470/ldt for wet cargo. Scrap prices in China hover at $310/ldt for dry and $330/ldt for wet cargo", the shipbroker concluded. Source : Nikos Roussanoglou, Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide

Unique Wellube’s Valve Testing System “Uni-Test” Certified by Bureau Veritas

Unique Wellube FZC, a Unique Maritime Group company, which is one of the world’s leading integrated turnkey subsea and offshore solution providers, is proud to have its “Uni-Test Safety & Relief Valve Testing System” certified by Bureau Veritas, one of the world’s leading

independent Testing, Inspection and Certification (TIC) bodies.

The primary device used to prevent over-pressurization in any onshore or offshore installation is the Pressure Safety Valves (PSV). The primary function of a PSV is therefore to protect life and property and it is paramount to ensure that the PSV will operate as designed.

The Uni-Test system is used to verify the set pressures of the PSV and also to ensure that it lifts when required, thus, eliminating the need to remove the valves from the system. Uni-Test can be used for testing when the plant is operational or during shut down. Bureau Veritas inspected the results of the set pressures of the PSV as obtained from the Uni-Test system and cross-verified the results. The certification was issued as the results generated by the system were found to be within ±1% of the valve’s actual set pressure. The industry standards for similar tests are within 2 – 3% of actual set pressures. Some of the advantages of the Uni-Test system are:

• Ensuring PSVs are operational and are set to the correct set pressure. • Non-operational PSVs can be identified prior to shutdown and thus reduce plant downtime. • Calibration of PSV in real working conditions. • Greater level of accuracy that test bench [executed at ambient temperatures]. • Possibility of extending the period of maintenance of the PSV • Time of field calibration drastically reduced

Commenting on this certification, Sahil Gandhi, Managing Director @ Unique Wellube FZC stated, “It is an achievement to get an attestation for our Uni-Test system used for the testing of PSV. Uni-Test is undoubtedly one of the best available systems for testing of PSVs and a certification from an accredited body like Bureau Veritas further augments

its usage in tests of varying complexities. We now look forward to achieving similar attestation for the system’s accuracy and use from other leading Independent TIC bodies in the near future.”

Inmarsat brings Hollywood to the high seas

Inmarsat secures exclusive 5-year, worldwide movie distribution agreement for commercial maritime

The latest Hollywood blockbusters will soon be available to commercial shipping companies across the world, delivered directly to vessels at sea via Inmarsat’s global satellite network. Inmarsat, the leading provider of global mobile satellite communications services, and NT Digital Partners1, are planning to launch FLEET MEDIA this Summer. The globally-exclusive, five-year agreement covering the digital distribution of the latest Hollywood releases, as well as television programming and sports and news content, will be available to the world’s commercial shipping fleet via any Inmarsat broadband package.

FLEET MEDIA will offer a selection of movie and television programming packages every month, which will be sent directly to participating vessels over the Inmarsat network for ‘off-line’ viewing on PCs, laptops and tablets. The service will be available to Inmarsat broadband service subscribers with the content securely downloaded and stored on the vessel’s Inmarsat iFUSION box2. Any ship owner subscribing to the new digital packages will be able to take their service with them when they upgrade from one Inmarsat service to another (e.g. FleetBroadband to XpressLink or XpressLink to Global Xpress).

The content packages will be created by NT Digital Partners and its co-owner Spafax, a WPP company. Spafax is a leader in inflight entertainment with customers including British Airways and Air Canada. “Inmarsat is extremely excited by this agreement and the opportunities to bring more benefits to seafarers,” said Frank Coles, President, Inmarsat Maritime. “This service continues our commitment to welfare at sea. We will be offering this service through our global distribution channel.”

Hollywood studios for a product that will forever change the crew member experience." The new service is expected to be launched by July 2014.

FLEET MEDIA will offer an on-demand video experience with hundreds of hours of programming. The new service, which will be available to ship owners via their Inmarsat Distribution Partner (DP), is a step-change improvement over traditional DVD distribution methods with the streamed content specifically licensed and selected for commercial ships.

Jan De Nul Group awards contract to Tree C Technology B.V. for Fall Pipe Vessel Simulator

This week, leading expert in dredging and marine construction activities, Jan De Nul Group awarded Tree C Technology B.V. a contract for the development and delivery of a Fall Pipe Vessel Simulator for its headquarters in Capellen in Luxembourg. The simulator will be used for personnel training of the Jan De Nul Group’s fall pipe

vessel Joseph Plateau and its sister vessel Simon Stevin. With a rock carrying capacity of 31,500 tonnes, these fall pipe rock dumping vessels are the largest of their kind in the world and two of the few vessels equipped for rock dumping in water depths of 2,000m. The FPV (fall pipe vessel) simulator is designed for interactive training of FPV operators in the most realistic conditions. It provides training facilities for a wide range of operators and skills including

the Fall Pipe operator, Surveyor, Operations’ superintendent and the Ship’s electrician. All the corresponding monitoring and control functions are operated from dedicated consoles equal to the ones on board. To this end Tree C will source the equipment from the same original manufacturers, Ingeteam (ES) and Seatools (NL).

The first part of the project will focus on the actual production process, i.e. control by the FP operator of the stones’ flow and control of the fall pipe and fall pipe ROV position. The second part includes the building up and breaking up processes of the fall pipe, i.e. managing the pipe storage area and inserting or removing successive pipe pieces to build up or break up the desired fall pipe assembly. In future the facility can be further extended to a full mission simulator, including the Work Class ROV operator and DP operator tasks. They will be working and interacting within a common simulation environment that will consider and recreate all real-life interactions between the different systems that are manipulated. “This contract highlights a year in which Tree C celebrates being 20 years in service and proves our solid reputation in the offshore equipment simulation market.” said Gerard Weder, CEO of Tree C Technology B.V., and he continues: “We value Jan De Nul Group highly for their professional and detailed preparation of this high grade project which is proof of the fact that simulation, read training of their personnel, is taken very seriously”. The simulator is scheduled for turnkey delivery in August 2015.

It's the biggest warship the Royal Australian Navy has ever had. And the HMAS Canberra Landing Helicopter Dock is nearly ready to put to sea. The 230-metre long, 27,000-tonne amphibious assault ship is being put through its paces in Sydney Harbour by builder BAE Systems and the ship’s new crew, led by inaugural commanding officer, Captain Jonathan Sadleir. "The builders are on board, making sure everything is in good working order. And we have navy ship’s personnel standing beside them to learn the ropes as it goes," a Defence spokesman said. She’ll then go down and conduct sea trials around Victoria and Gippsland, after which there’ll be a handover to Defence some time in the third quarter." The Canberra, one of two LHDs being built for the navy at a cost of about $3 billion, is bigger even than Australia’s last aircraft carrier, the HMAS Melbourne, which was retired in 1982. Once commissioned in the second half of the year, she will carry up to 1600 soldiers, effectively marines who can be deployed to troublespots around the region, particularly for disaster relief and peacekeeping operations. The massive flight deck, measuring more than 200 metres long and 32 metres across, can carry 16 helicopters, including Blackhawks, Chinooks and Tiger armed reconnaissance choppers.

The massive flight deck, measuring more than 200 metres long and 32 metres across, can carry 16 helicopters, including Blackhawks, Chinooks and Tiger armed reconnaissance choppers. The lower decks will be able to hold more than 100 trucks and other vehicles and up to a dozen Abrams battle tanks. Four mechanised landing craft will be able to ferry the troops ad their equipment to shore. A new aspect for the navy is the Canberra’s pair of azimuth thrusters - propellers that can be rotated in any direction, meaning the ship doesn’t need a rudder. It’s a new way of steering that makes the vessel far more manoeuvrable, but which hasn’t been used by the navy before.Though it will be based at Garden Island, the Canberra will spend much of its time up at Townsville, where the 2nd Battalion Royal Australian regiment will provide the Army manpower. Shipbuilding Corporation of Pascagoula, Mississippi) for the Israeli Navy, based on Israeli designs. Three such ships have been built, all of which are in service with the Israeli Navy. They are the largest surface warships in Israel's naval fleet. Although they are "corvettes" due to their small size and crew of only 71, their weaponry and speed are almost comparable to that of a frigate. They are equipped with sonar, torpedoes, missile launchers, electronic warfare capabilities and decoys, a gun mount, and a helipad and helicopter hangar. The first of class, INS Eilat, was launched in February 1993, followed by INS Lahav in August 1993 and INS Hanit in March 1994.

Decommissioned INS Vikrant Sold for Rs 60 Crore

The decommissioned aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy, INS VIKRANT, which played an important role in the 1971 Indo-Pak war, has been sold for Rs 60 crore. "The auction process of INS VIKRANT was completed last week and a company named IB Commercial Pvt Ltd won the bid," said a defence source here tonight.

Earlier, the Maharashtra Government had expressed its inability to maintain VIKRANT, the Indian Navy's first aircraft carrier which was commissioned in 1961. It was decommissioned in January 1997.

The defence source said that once the money is paid, the company will have to tow the ship away from the Naval Dockyard here, where it is anchored currently, within thirty days. "Condition

of the ship is so bad that it is not worth converting it into a museum," the source said, adding that Navy would be able to use the space vacated by the ship in the Dockyard for some other fruitful purposes. In January 2014, during the hearing of a public interest litigation which pposed the plan to scrap the ship, the Union Ministry of Defence told the Bombay High Court that it had completed its operational life. While the Maharashtra government stated that to preserve it as a museum would not be viable financially. IHC Merwede reveals healthy order book

IHC Merwede successfully increased its order book in 2013 across the main sectors of its business: offshore and dredging. The company received almost € 1.8 billion worth of new orders in the past year. At the end of 2013, the order book was valued at over € 1.7 billion, which is the equivalent of a backlog of approximately two years. IHC Merwede develops and builds innovative vessels, advanced

equipment and life-cycle support services for the dredging, mining and offshore industries. These markets have been performing well, despite the global economic situation and the knock-on effect for the maritime industry. In 2013, IHC Merwede achieved a revenue of € 985 million (2012: € 895 million) and a net profit of € 56 million (2012: € 37 million). The company is looking ahead to the remainder of 2014 with increasing confidence. Market developments The shipbuilding industry is characterised by a huge overcapacity in ships and shipyards around the world due to the ongoing economic uncertainty. As a result, there was an increased level of competition for IHC Merwede in 2013, with new entrants to the dredging and offshore sectors aiming to offset the decline in their traditional markets. However, IHC Merwede distinguishes itself with a consistent focus on delivering value to its customers. In the dredging market, new investments continue to be made selectively, and these are dependent on the latest regulations and the addition of new product groups. A positive factor is the growth of state-owned enterprises, which are autonomous in their decision-making in the face of global economic developments. The current economic climate is also unfavourable for the start of full-scale developments in alternative extraction possibilities within the mining market. IHC Merwede remains active in the areas of nearshore/onshore mining and studies for deep-sea mining. It is expected that investments in equipment will be driven by changes in political and economic conditions. The offshore market continues to evolve. IHC Merwede profited from the sale of various vessels and equipment in 2013, including six pipelaying vessels to SapuraKencana and Subsea 7 – the company’s largest ever order. It is expected that further investments – related to the Brazilian market – will not be curtailed, and IHC Merwede intends to build upon its strong and reliable position in this territory.

IHC Merwede’s four main priorities – internationalisation, growth, product and process development, and internal/external cooperation – remained the same for 2013 as a red thread through the company's strategy. The implementation of the One IHC Merwede program will encourage the standardisation of tools and processes across all of IHC Merwede’s business units to further improve efficiency within the company. “We are delighted to confirm that IHC Merwede’s order book has increased substantially over the past financial year,” says IHC Merwede’s CEO Bram Roelse. “This is due to the successful implementation of the group’s long-term business strategy, especially in the dredging and offshore markets. It also ensures that we are in a strong position moving forward over a number of years and provides us with a stable platform for ongoing development on a global basis.”
