1 Introduction

The 5G MiEdge project is developing technologies to integrate MEC and mmWave

into the 5G network architecture to offer innovative services and applications. This is

achieved by means of an edge cloud and the introduction of an ultra-lean and inter-

operable signaling, called ‘liquid control plane’, capable of providing ubiquitous

allocation of computation and communication resources, in an application-/user-

centric framework.

The objective of this report is to present the planned/achieved dissemination,

standardisation, and exploitation activities, how they are implemented, and the

expected results. These activities have the objective to ensure that the results of the

project are sufficiently advertised during its time span, mainly by means of

dissemination and, at the same time, they are introduced onto the standardisation path

and taken into account in the exploitation plans. On top of this, the actions that are

foreseen in order to guarantee that also after the project is finished, key achievements

will find their way to become part of marketable technologies and products, will be

explained in this report.

In the deliverable the main outcomes from these activities during the first year of the

project are also described.

2 Project presentation

5G-MiEdge has the ambitious goal of contributing to the broadest possible acceptance

of new wireless infrastructures through concepts validation of enhanced and novel 5G

technologies. The project looks beyond the current scope of 5G, introducing the Ultra

High Speed Low Latency Communications (uHSLLC) services, so to address new use

cases and create additional values for 5G users. 5G-MiEdge uses a holistic approach

in combining millimeter-wave (mmWave) edge cloud, liquid RAN control-plane (C-

plane), and user/application centric orchestration techniques. The final target is to

demonstrate the benefits of a first 5G implementation through testbeds both in the city

of Berlin [6] and at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics. The distinctive feature of the

5G-MiEdge vision is to exploit the benefit of combining Mobile Edge Computing

(MEC), with mmWave communications. MEC and mmWave technologies

complement each other well: mmWave access benefits from the distributed

computation and storage capabilities of MEC to optimize the communication

strategies, incorporating cache prefetching, and orchestration of APs at the edge. MEC

benefits from the high data rate proximity access to the edge cloud of mmWave, thus

reducing latency and improving the Quality of Experience (QoE).

Figure 1. Ultra High Speed Low Latency Communications use cases (left), and key 5G-

MiEdge technologies (right);

Figure 1 summarizes the use cases and the key technologies developed by 5G-MiEdge

so to make uHSLLC a reality. A newly defined ultra-lean and inter-operable control

signaling plane, called ‘liquid RAN C-plane’, is proposed, where ‘liquid’ stems from

its capability of enabling services and connections that follow and adapt to users’ needs,

like a liquid adapts to the form of its container. The liquid C-plane is meant to provide

ubiquitous allocation of communication and computation resources in a user-

/application-centric perspective. Acquisition of context information and service

requests forecast are key steps to enable a proactive orchestration of radio and

computation resources in 5G-MiEdge enhanced 5G networks.

o Millimetre-wave technology for 5G access, fronthaul and backhaul

The motivation for this workshop is to bring together experts in mmWave technology

and those with expertise and experience of communication systems and networks,

including those involved in the definition of the standards for 5G. It is known that the

mmWave spectrum is of interest for 5G access and for point-to-point links providing

fronthaul and backhaul. Technology demonstrators have shown ultra-high bit-rates are

possible. However, more needs to be done in joint work that can harness these high

potential bit-rates for users, integrating them into complete system design and in

promoting cost-effective and energy-efficient solutions.

The proposed format of the workshop is two 1 hr 40 min sessions, each consisting of

4 presentations, concluded by a panel discussion. The first session was devoted to the

use of mmWave as an access technology for 5G and has included a presentation on

how the synergy between Mobile Edge Computing and mmWave access can provide

an effective solution to some of the 5G challenges, from the 5G-MiEdge project.

Fifth International Workshop on Cloud Technologies and Energy

Efficiency in Mobile Communication Networks (CLEEN 2017)

This workshop has been co-organized together with several H2020 collaborative

projects http://www.flex5gware.eu/images/cfp__CLEEN2017__final.pdf. It has

explored novel concepts to allow for flexibly centralised radio access networks using

cloud-processing based on open IT platforms, in coordination with network functions

virtualization technologies and MEC (Mobile Edge Computing), that are recognized

as key enablers for the definition of future 5G systems. It has cover technologies across

PHY, MAC, and network layers, technologies which translate the cloud-paradigm to

the radio access and backhaul network, and will analyse the network evolution from

the energy efficiency perspective. It will study the requirements, constraints, and

implications for mobile communication networks, and also potential relationship with

the offered service, both from the academic and the industrial point of view. From 5G

MiEdge, Prof. S. Barbarossa, form the Univ. of Rome “La Sapienza,” gave a keynote

on Merging millimeter-wave and mobile edge computing technologies in 5G networks:

Opportunities and challenges. Also, E. Calvanese Strinati (CEA LETI) moderate a

successful panel on the MEC technologies. The program of the workshop is presented

in Table 4 and a detail of the call for paper is given in Figure 9 (Appendix B).

3.4 Other collaboration activities

One of the 5G MiEdge project goals is to establish links with other related

collaborative projects in the 5G ecosystem to have both a better knowledge of existing

solutions and to take advantage of possible advances in the considered fields. A special

care will be spent on aligning the course of 5G MiEdge with other funded projects

running in parallel, so to avoid overlapping or leaving white spots, which would reduce

the impact of the project, and to foster synergies among projects working on related

areas.

These activities have in been carried through several collaboration actions:

The project has established contacts with two other projects that present

significant synergies with 5G MiEdge: 5G MiEdge+ (Jp domestic project) and

5G! Pagoda [5G-Pag] (EU-Jp collaborative project). 5G MiEdge+ partners

were invited as observers to the 5G MiEdge general assemblies; moreover, Dr.

Yoshiaki Kiriha from 5G! Pagoda has presented this project to the 5G MiEdge

consortium in the second 5G MiEdge general assembly. 5G MiEdge, MiEdge+,

and 5G! Pagoda booths at 3r Global 5G Event were together hosted in the

5GMF area.

5G MiEdge has established a liaison with several 5GPPP projects and has

participated to the organization of the CLEEN 2017 workshop, together with

5G MiEdge has co-organized two half-day workshops hosted at EUCNC 2017

together with the EU funded projects Flex5GWare [flex] and MiWaveS

[miwaves] as well as the EU-Korea co-funded 5G CHAMPION [5G-Champ].

5G MiEdge has co-organized the future 5G-Testbed in IEEE Globecom 2017

together with the EU-Kr collaborative project 5G Champion [5G-Champ].

Both the projects have as main focus to demonstrate their 5G functionalities in

the very next years: 5G Champion targets to showcase its technology during

the Korean Winter Olympic games in 2018 while 5G MiEdge has the objective

to highlight its mmWave and MEC solution in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games.

5G MiEdge has presented its preliminary activities to an industrial workshop

organized by the EU-Br collaborative project Futebol [Futebol], composed by

Brazilian operators, regulatory bodies, and industry. Following this

presentation, potential joint activities are under discussion.

3.5 Dissemination to standards and regulation

The 5G MiEdge is monitoring the progress and the outcome of standardization bodies

working on topics relevant for the project. When possible the consortium is trying to

push into standards the main results coming out of the project. Such standardization

efforts in the 5G MiEdge project will be aligned with other H2020 funded 5GPPP

projects in EU as well as 5GMF (5G Mobile Communication Promotion Forum) in

Japan. Regular reports of the main outcomes of standards bodies are shared among the

project partners, so to ensure that the directions taken by the project are aligned with

the on-going 5G standardization activities.

The most relevant standards group for the topics in focus in the project, and therefore

the groups that the project aims at impacting most, are listed in the table below. Other

fora may be identified during the project lifetime.

In addition to standards, another important aspect for achieving an effective

deployment of a new technology is the alignment and potentially the impact on

regulatory bodies. The availability of new spectrum and a different use of the existing

one are key enabling aspects for mmWave technologies. Therefore 5G MiEdge will

tightly monitor and support the work that is starting in regulatory bodies in preparation

of the WRC 2019.

At this stage of the project several contributions have been presented to the 3GPP SA1:

4 Exploitation plans

The 5G MiEdge consortium was carefully constructed partner wise to ensure the

presence of several different business segments: operators, equipment manufacturers,

infrastructure component suppliers, academia, and research centers. Their diversity in

expertise, focus areas, business aspects and working methods increases the probability

of a successful impact on the worldwide market of the technologies proposed by the

project. Such diversity also implies that different approaches will be followed by the

consortium partners for an effective exploitation of the project results.

5G-MiEdge Page 22

Particular attention is related to the 5G MiEdge use cases presented in D1.1 [D1.1] and

the associated preliminary business opportunities presented in D1.2 [D1.2]. The

following main exploitation streams have been identified at the moment:

1. Equipment vendors (Intel, PANA): leveraging on the acquired knowledge

of the state of the art of the technologies in focus and having a very deep

outstanding expertise in innovation and pre-development activities will

ensure an appropriate feasibility analysis of the future technologies. The

outcomes of the project will be used to better understand both new customer

requirements and the impact of the enabling 5G technologies on the current

products, as well as being enabled to launch new products with appealing

features to the international markets fuelling competition. The technological

know how build-up in the project will provide a competitive advantage

versus the other companies not involved in the project. Indeed the possibility

of filing new patents to protect the newly developed technologies is an

additional key aspect in the exploitation of the project results.

2. Telecom operators (TI, KLAB): The project results could be reflected as a

guidance of their future deployment plan for their infrastructures and new

services.

3. Research institutes (FHG, CEA): working on the project topics will

contribute to increase their knowledge on the future network design for

better understanding of current industry needs, and to identify new

challenges and focus for future research activities. The obtained knowledge

will be used to transfer new technological solutions to their industrial

partners, in particular network vendors, telecom operators, service providers

and others. CEA is currently filling a patent related to the studies carried out

in 5G MiEdge WP2.

4. Universities (URom, TTech): will generate new patents from their research

results and spread their values to the industry and the society through major

international conferences, workshops and journals. The possibilities to

introduce latest project research results in the education courses of students

at the university are also paramount aspects of the exploitation of the project

results.
