February 2019 Volume 59, Number 2 A Word from Our President

Hello and welcome to the Continen-tal Dance Club’s President’s mes-sage!

The first thing I would like to do is give a great big thank you to all our new members who have joined our club this year. I know it can be very intimidating walking through that front door the first time, but our goal is for every-one to have a wonderful time and to help you get to know your fellow dancers. What’s the best way for you to get to be “in the mix of things”?

Start with the free or intermediate lessons. Join in on our “mixers”. These are both great ways to learn new dance steps and break the ice without getting your feet wet!

Our Vice President Ben Davis has the duty of seeing to it that we have some of the best professional dance teachers each month focusing on one dance. (At $5 a lesson, that’s a steal!) Meanwhile, in our small ballroom, we have FREE dance les-sons taught by fellow members and those volunteers are good!

April has brought not only a change of season (and a variety of temperatures!), but has also brought back a few members whom we had not seen for awhile. I think another reason we see more and more mem-bers returning after the cold weather is the smell and taste of great food. The second week in April was our Spring Break dance. It was fun to see some members in comfy vacation-style clothes. A big thanks is due to

all of you that brought delicious food to share.

As many of you know, the lesson for April was the Salsa, taught by professional dance instructor Sean Gehlhausen. The Salsa dance was new to our lesson series, but you had

asked for it, and we always try to de-liver. If there is ever a time you think you might want to take a pri-vate lesson from one of the profes-sional instructors, just talk to them after the lesson. Or, ask one of the board members and we’ll get you the contact information.

Many of our members dance not only on a social level, but also partic-ipate in competitions. Rog and Amy Greenawalt are National Dance Champions. Ben and Alexis Davis are competition winners as well, and Neil Behrle and his dance instructor go to competitions all over the Unit-ed States. Others compete locally, with winners including our own Nan-cy Lutz and Olympia Harris.

I guess I find it amazing that with all of these different dance lev-els in our club, all our members and guests are able to participate at their own ability and have a great time. Each Monday morning, as we start a new week, we’re already looking for-

ward to the next Sunday evening! Speaking of looking forward, May is always a “fast” month in Indianapolis, but

let’s all take time to dance and smell the roses!

DAVE

“I want to give a great big thank you to all our new members who have joined our club this year.”

MY CDC GREG RAMBICURE

Growing up in Lexington, Kentucky, Greg Rambicure re-calls, there were high school sock hops to the music of the Beatles and the Beach Boys, plus broom dances in basements or garages. There was even that round of ball-room dance lessons he’d taken at the encouragement of his par-ents, both avid ballroom buffs.

“Back in the day,” he mus-es, “dances consisted mainly of the jitterbug and a standard box step. Then, of course, there were the Twist, the Bristol Stomp, the Wah Watusi, Mashed Potato, and the Mon-ster Mash. Now, decades later, Greg is focused on re-learning those “dormant” skills, begin-ning again with the basics.

Greg’s decision to retire in January, 2017 was a difficult one, since he had truly enjoyed his very successful 36-year sales career in diagnostics and

medical sales with Becton Dickinson. A six-time Presi-dents’ Club member, he twice qualified for the Winner’s Cir-cle in global sales. Healthcare had been a “meme” of his four

and hal f year navy servi ce at

different military hospitals, and in his career, his first love was consulting with the customer base to provide solutions to healthcare challenges. His own life was not untouched by healthcare challenges (his sec-ond wife passed away from a brain aneurysm; their daughter Kenzie was a heart patient at Riley Children's Hospital;Greg’s decision to retire wasmotivated by his choice to be

one of his sister’s primary care providers after she was diag-nosed with multiple myeloma).

Now, he says, he is fully en-joying retirement and the op-portunity to travel this great country and several global des-tinations on his bucket list. Walking four miles each day, Greg enjoys the outdoors, in-cluding golf, bicycling, canoe-ing, and kayaking. Quieter pur-suits include reading and board games, and continuing to im-prove his acoustic guitar play-ing skills.

Greg is the proud father of three children. Sons Eric and Keith live in Wisconsin, while now 24-year old Kenzie is pur-suing her master’s in clinical social work at IUPUI.

Having joined CDC in Feb-ruary of this year, Greg is taking ad-vantage of the begin-ners’ dance lesson every Sunday, polish-ing up his (until-

recently rarely used) skills. He appreciates the opportunity CDC offers to meet weekly in a familiar setting, the great musi-cal selections, the different DJ’s and bands, and particularly the very friendly and welcoming members!
