FRagRanCe stoRyour press releases are also available to wholesale customers for use in their own marketing initiatives. Please ask for details. Here is a shortened version of ‘The perfumed garden’ press release:

david austin’s obsession with the strength, character and quality of each rose’s scent means that the English Roses offer the gardener an intriguing array of fragrances.• The weather conditions, while the petals are still forming within the bud, influence the quality and strength of an individual bloom’s perfume.• Fragrance is intensified by warm, humid weather.• A flower smells differently in the morning, at midday and in the evening. A rose bud smells slightly different to the partly or fully open flower. Characteristic, complex notes often appear as the bloom ages.• Most of the fragrance of a rose is held in the petals, although the stamens often have musky or clove scents.

Fragrance In The English Rosesduring the eight year trialling process, david austin works with perfumier, Robert calkin, to assess the character and strength of each rose’s fragrance.• one of Robert’s tips is to learn to explore rose scents by comparing two roses side by side to highlight their differences and similarities.• The unusual scent, myrrh, appeared in 1961 with David Austin’s first rose, the once flowering ‘Constance Spry’, reputed to have been Steve Jobs’s favorite rose.• everyone has a very individual perception of fragrance: scents evoke different memories and responses.

Fragrance TypesEnglish Roses can be grouped into five fragrance types, although there is much interplay between them.• Myrrh has the aromatic, licorice warmth of sweet anise. Amongst roses, it is now almost exclusively confined to the English Roses, although it can be found in other plants, such as Lilac and Hawthorn. Best: ‘Wollerton Old Hall’.• Fruity - the rose is related to many fruits, including apples, pears, raspberries, strawberries and apricots. Best: ‘Lady Emma Hamilton’.• Musk - even a small amount of the romantic musk rose scent will perfume the air. The source of the scent is frequently the stamens. Best: ‘The Generous Gardener’.• Old Rose - david austin’s favorite rose fragrance is the classic old rose, which he believes is the most alluring of all the rose fragrances. Best: ‘Gertrude Jekyll’.• Tea Rose - often compared to opening a packet of fresh china Tea - most frequently appears in the yellows and apricots. Best: Port Sunlight.

The company maintains a consistently high level of investment in breeding and trialling new varieties. David Austin and his team of horticulturists have created one of the world’s largest breeding programs for garden roses. Seedlings are assessed for characteristics such as beauty of flower form, outstanding garden performance, fragrance, and grace. The most outstanding seedlings undergo up to eight years of field trials. Eventually just three to six new varieties will be released each year.

We have been delighted to find that the vast majority of our roses perform well at all our trial grounds, despite the wide variety of different climates. The results show the english Roses to be generally a very tough, reliable, healthy and hardy group of roses. Where a rose exhibits a regional preference, we have indicated this in the variety description.

We have ten trial grounds, providing coverage across America. These are based in the north east, the north west, the Midwest, the south and south east, with four covering the southern, northern and central California area. Some are public gardens, some are private. In addition to these, we are in close contact with a network of other private gardens where the owners report back on a more informal basis, so adding valuable information on each variety.

Ways oF using DaviD austin’s Roses

HedgesEnglish Rose hedges repeat flower prolifically, producing flushes of glorious, fragrant blooms. They have attractive healthy, green foliage and their thorns help deter intruders.

Tips• when planting, space the shorter varieties

about 1½ ft. apart and taller varieties about 3 ft. apart.

• Adjust the height of the hedge by pruning.

some of our favourite varieties (for tall hedges): strawberry hill; (for medium hedges): charlotte, harlow carr, Mary Rose, Molineux, Queen of sweden, scepter’d isle, susan williams-ellis; (for short hedges): darcey Bussell, Munstead wood, sophy’s Rose, The Alnwick Rose.

Pots and ContainersContainer gardening is increasingly popular. english Roses, with their graceful, bushy habits and long flowering season, are highly effective grown this way. Use to decorate balconies, paths, seating areas, entrances, or areas of gravel and paving, where their many-petalled, deliciously fragrant flowers can be enjoyed at close quarters. Almost any of the english Roses can be grown in large pots.

Tips• choose a large container to give the roots

more room to develop and prevent the soil drying out too quickly.

• Take extra care to feed and water regularly.

• group a number of containerized roses together to create the impression of a garden.

Mixed Borderswe always encourage gardeners to combine English Roses with other flowering plants as companions. The pure, natural colours of the roses allow them to harmonize with the widest possible range of companion plants, creating a wonderful array of colour, form, texture and scent. All the English Roses can be grown in mixed borders.

Tips• add english Roses to mixed borders to

extend the flowering season.• plant the roses in compact groups of the

same variety to create greatest impact.• larger roses will provide height and

structure without the need for staking.

Landscapingenglish Roses are low maintenance plants, perfect for landscaping and all kinds of plant-ing schemes. They are very easy to care for, exceptionally tough, reliable and healthy, with large, full, fragrant blooms and superb repeat flowering. English Roses marked ❀ in their descriptions are highly recommended for landscaping in the North American climate.

Tips• english Roses can easily be trimmed using

a hedge trimmer.• position the most fragrant varieties where

their scent can be appreciated.

Shrubsenglish Roses are easy to grow, adaptable and highly versatile. When grown as shrubs, they can be used in a wide variety of ways: in mixed flower beds, traditional rose borders or in large decorative planters around the yard. A massed collection of English Roses looks quite superb when trained against a long post and rail fence - this is one of the many ways we display them at our UK nursery. some varieties make beautiful fragrant, thorny hedges, while most are ideal for landscaping projects.

in this section of the catalogue, we have classified each variety as small, medium or large to allow easy comparison between them. The gardener can adjust the height a rose will reach by pruning.

in a warmer climate, or with lighter pruning, the rose will naturally form a larger plant. summer pruning will help maintain the desired height of the rose in warmer areas. For more guidance, please contact us.

Climberssome english Roses make the most excellent climbers and indeed we believe they are, as a group, the best of all climbing roses. They are vigorous, without being too tall, and so are easy to manage. They also have a remarkable ability to flower all the way down to the base of the plant. They are very generous with the number of stems they produce from the base and so there is plenty to work with when fanning them out on a wall, trellis or fence. They are also ideal for obelisks, arches or pillars.

all varieties denoted with a “CL”can be trained as a climber.

neW english Roses FoR 2015

Thomas à Becket™ ❀ (auswinston)This is a variety of very different character from the general run of English Roses, being rather closer to the species Roses than to the old Roses and more natural and shrubby in growth. The individual flowers can best be described as shallowly cupped, opening as informal rosettes; the petals quickly reflexing as the flowers age. They are held in medium-sized heads; the individual blooms nodding attractively on the stem. They have an Old Rose fragrance with a strong lemon zest character. The colour is difficult to describe or even photograph: the best we can say is an attractive light red paling to carmine red. This variety is best used where an informal shrub is required. A particularly strong and healthy variety. 4 x 3 ft. or more, according to pruning. We were asked to name this rose for Canterbury Cathedral and were very pleased to do so.

Height: 4 x 3 ft. Repeating: ExcellentFragrance: Medium, old Rose Zones: 5 to 9

11

Royal Jubilee™ ❀ (auspaddle)Royal Jubilee’ is a unique rose for a unique occasion; we are delighted to introduce it in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The flowers are very beautiful, being large and of a deep chalice shape; the petals incurving so that we can only just see the stamens within. The colour is a deep pink. Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of this rose is its growth which is typical of the english albas; the stems being thin and wiry and showing off the flowers with the utmost elegance against typical Alba foliage. It has very few thorns. The blooms have a lovely rich fruity fragrance with hints of blackcurrant. It has excellent health, vigor and repeat-flowering qualities.height: 5 x 3 ft. Repeating: ExcellentFragrance: strong, Black currant Zones: 5 to 9

N

The Albrighton Rambler™ ❀ CL (ausmobile)We have only introduced two repeat-flowering ramblers so far – ‘Snow Goose’ and ‘Malvern Hills’ – and so we are very excited to be introducing a third. Unlike most ramblers that have single or semi-double flowers, ‘The Albrighton Rambler’ has small, cup-shaped, perfectly formed flowers of softest pink that pale to blush. The petals are beautifully arranged with a little button eye; the overall appearance being one of exceptional prettiness and charm. The blooms are held in large sprays and hang gracefully on the branch. As it repeat flowers well, we expect it to reach a height of around 10 or 12 ft. or perhaps more. It is an exceptionally healthy variety that will do well with little attention and the flowers are not affected by rain. There is a light musky fragrance typical of the Sempervirens hybrids. Named to commend the striders, steppers and strollers who walk around the village of albrighton, where david Austin’s Nursery is located.

The Lady Gardener™ ❀ (ausbrass)This is a particularly interesting rose in that it is the first in the English Old Rose group which has apricot flowers. These are large, about 4” across, and of a beautiful shade of rich pure apricot that pales towards the outside of the bloom. They are of a rosette shape and very full petalled with a large button eye that gradually opens up; the petals loosely arranged in a quartered formation. Altogether an excellent garden plant that will repeat flower quickly, stand up well to rain and stay very healthy. There is a particularly lovely and strong Tea fragrance which has hints of cedar wood and vanilla. It will reach a height of 3½ ft. and about 2½ ft. across, depending on how it is pruned. Named to raise awareness for Plant Heritage and their important work to protect Britain’s garden plant diversity. We maintain the National Collection of English Roses here in our Rose Gardens.

The aim of our breeding program is to maintain a comprehensive selelction of roses in different colours, forms, fragrance and habits, all with outstanding performance. aDviCe to youR CustomeRs - Rose Cultivation

Planting Time containerized roses can be planted all year round, although extra attention to watering will be required in hot spells until the roses are well established.

Planting Position select a site with at least four hours of sun each day, although in areas with hot summers shade from the afternoon sun can be beneficial. Generally roses will not flourish where their roots are in competition with the roots of other plants, especially trees and hedges.

Planting Distances if you have the space, english Roses look superb planted in groups of three or more of one variety. They will then grow together to form one dense shrub, which will provide a more continuous display and make a more definite statement in the border. Depending on the varieties and your climate we suggest planting about 18 - 24" apart within the group and 3-4 ft. between plants of neighboring varieties.

Soil Type Roses will grow in a wide range of soils, but they do appreciate good soil preparation. The addition of well rotted manure or garden compost before planting will help ensure strong growth.

Planting Just prior to planting containerized roses should be soaked for 30 minutes or so and then allowed to drain for an hour or two. When planted, the base of the stems should be about 3" below ground level in cold winter areas and at ground level in milder areas. Water generously until the plant is well established.

Planting in Containers plant in a 50:50 mix of loam based and loam free compost and apply a good, slow release fertiliser. Water regularly, especially during the summer, when they may need to be watered daily. Prune by at least half when spring growth begins.

Feeding, Mulching and Watering Feeding, generous mulching and occasional deep watering will help encourage strong growth and more flowers. Mulch in spring, preferably using well rotted manure or garden compost.

Healthy Roses The best way to keep your roses healthy is to choose disease resistant varieties and grow them as well as possible. Excessive nitrogen can make roses more susceptible to both pests and diseases. However an occasional spray can help, the most effective being at the start of the season before symptoms develop. Beware of frosts the night after spraying - they will scorch the leaves badly. There are different chemicals and laws in many of the provinces, so we recommend that you seek the latest advice from your garden center team, nursery or local rose society.

Winter Pruning Pruning is very easy. In areas with relatively mild winters, January and February is the best time. In regions with cold winters, pruning should be delayed until spring growth is just starting. On all plants, remove very weak, old and woody and dead and diseased stems.

English Shrub Roses prune back by between 1/3 and 2/3, depending on what height you would like your rose to reach next season. Each year remove some of the older stems to encourage fresh, new growth from the base.

English Climbing RosesThe previous year’s flowering shoots should be reduced to 3 or 4 buds or about 4" - 6" and the strong, new stems tied in, cutting out older ones as necessary.

English Ramblers Leave to ramble, tying in the strong new stems to provide support. If they need to be constrained, prune as for climbers.

Dead-HeadingThis is the removal of spent flowers. It encourages repeat-flowering and makes a tidier plant. Either remove just the dead flower or cut the stems down to the first full leaf.

Summer Pruning In warm climates it may be beneficial to summer prune by cutting back most of the spent flowering shoots, leaving just a few inches. This can be repeated through the season as the rose repeat flowers and will encourage more compact growth and quicker repeat-flowering.

Roses are easy to grow and remarkably tolerant. To achieve good results, it is only necessary for them to get a few basic points right. However, roses will respond well to extra care and attention by being more floriferous and healthy. Here is our care advice for home gardeners.
