Depending on the treatment methods used by the individual spa

establishments, the procedures are divided into five groups.

First group (I): Traditional (classical, standard) methods of spa

treatment based mainly on the use of natural curative resources

    (water, peloids, gases and climate).

Second group (II): Traditional (classical, standard, but also more

modern) methods of spa treatment which are not based on the use

of natural curative resources but have been generally in use for a

long time in the spa (such as methods based on the use of electric

    current, magnetism and so on).

Third group (III): Non-traditional methods of spa treatment which

have been introduced in the last few decades and which are

mostly based on Eastern influences or influences that are

    a reflection of wellness.

Fourth group (IV): Services that are not therapeutic but are a suitable

complement to the spa services services in the area of cosmetics, kinaesthetic activities and so on.

Fifth group (V): Other examination and medical methods.

    DEAR READERS

Would you like to know which Bohemian orMoravian spas can help relieve you of your health

problems? Or are you just interested in having a rest to

recharge your batteries? Are you considering where to

go with your friends for an unusual long weekend? Are

you looking for a novel gift for one of your loved ones?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then this

new edition of our spa catalogue is for you. It contains a

compendium of Bohemian and Moravian spas and the

medical, curative and wellness services they provide.

The combination of high-quality medical care, modern

therapeutic and rehabilitation methods with the

traditional application of unique natural curative

resources has made the Czech spa industry quite

exceptional and very popular. You can forget the old

notion that spas are only for the old and infirm. The

present wide range of spa procedures include both

traditional ones and those designed for people wanting

to get away from the stress of everyday life and relax.

Modern spas have all sorts of special offers aimed at

overworked managers, both women and men. Or

maybe you want to come together with your partner?

That is also no problem. You can choose from short-term

anti-stress, detoxification, anti-cellulite and many other

programmes. There are special offers at Christmas, New

Years Eve, Easter and even for St. Valentines Day. You will

find everything you need. Indeed, you can also go for a

massage or relaxing bath just a few dozen minutes away

    from your office.

The catalogue will show you that all will find spa

accommodation to suit their taste and pocket. The

same applies to the offer of gastronomic services. You

dont have to follow any strict dietary regimen and can

spoil your taste buds silly in any spa. And, of course,

you shouldnt forget to try out the regional delicacies.

Spas also offer lively and diverse cultural and sports

programmes and outings. It is not by chance that

many famous personalities visit Czech spas, where

they can forget about all their problems.

Our catalogue is structured according to individual

spa towns. For each spa there is a brief introduction, a

list of natural curative resources used there and

medical specialisations, a list of annual cultural and

sports events and the contact details of the local

information centre. This is followed by a list of spa and

wellness facilities in the spa. These are divided into

two basic groups: medical health facilities, and other

    accommodation and recreation facilities (hotels

and pensions this category includes hotels without

    official classification).

For each health facility we give the contact details,

a list of therapeutic procedures on offer and medical

equipment, and also information about the medical

indications and symptoms included in the facilitys

    specialisation.

You can find the electronic version of our catalogue at

    the website www.czechtourism.com.

    Examples of how natural

    curative resources are used

Mineral water is used for many purposes. Depending

on its composition, it is used either directly for drinking

cures or for baths, which are often enriched for

instance with herbal additives. Spas need water also

for inhalation, exercises in the pool, pearl baths,

underwater massage, vaginal and dental irrigation,

and the Hubbard bath (massage using a jet of water or

exercises in a large butterfly-shaped bath).

Different types of peat and mud, known collectively

as peloids, are used for wraps, compresses and baths.

Peloids have a beneficial effect on the musculoskeletal

system as well as on the skin. The curative effectsof peat are also used in the field of gynaecology

    (application of tampons).

Gases from both natural and medical sources are also

used in spa treatment. The subcutaneous application

of gases (using a very fine needle) can help alleviate

painful syndromes and functional disorders. They are

suitable for treating certain illnesses afflicting the

musculoskeletal system, ischemic disease of the lower

limbs, and others. Dry carbon dioxide baths help to

improve circulation of the bodys organs.

The climate in unspoilt localities free of pollution can

serve as another important curative resource. Stays

in climatic spas are effective in treating respiratory

    disorders.

    WHY VISIT SPAS?

Cultural enjoymentSpas are associated with a wide range of cultural

programmes usually starting with the official launching

of the spa season in May and ending with special

programmes at Christmas or New Years Eve. In the

course of the year, you can try discovering the secrets

of stars visiting film and music festivals, enjoy concerts

and theatre presentations, and visit exhibitions,

museums and art galleries. Or maybe you would

just like to go out into the beautiful surroundingcountryside.

Magical atmosphereThe beginnings of the Czech spa industry go right back to the 15th century. Some curative spa resources,

however, have been used for almost two millennia. Their health-giving effects have been appreciated by manyfamous people. Czech spas were frequented by Charles IV, Peter the Great. Maria Theresa, Johann Wolfgang

Goethe, members of the Rockefeller family and even Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal. You can breathe in the unique

atmosphere of the art nouveau in many Czech spas, from times when ladies in long robes and bonnets were

escorted along the colonnades by gentlemen wearing tail coats. Of course, you will certainly not be disappointed

if you are the type that enjoys the modern lifestyle and spend your leisure time involved in all sorts of

    entertainment, shopping and sports.

SportsA stay in a spa goes hand in hand with the healthy

lifestyle. This is why you will find near spas dense

networks of paths for walking and cycling, renowned

golf courses, ski resorts and cross-country ski trails.

Some spas even equip their guests with fishing

    permits.

Spa specialitiesThose that have never tasted spa wafers and liqueurs near spas have obviously never visited a Czech spa.

Individual spas often have their own special herbal liqueur. Maybe the most famous is Becher Liqueur(Becherovka) made in Karlovy Vary and known as the citys thirteenth spring. A very popular delicacy and

frequent souvenir is the spa wafer. Our tip: best eaten hot to get the most from their nut or vanilla flavour.

Small jugs used for drinking mineral water are excellent souvenirs to take home with you. They can be made of

glass, porcelain or stoneware and their shape helps to maintain the temperature and carbon dioxide content of

the water during drinking cures. The spout-cum-handle is to facilitate the drinking process. Photo:CzechTourism

The Czech Spas Association was founded in 1995 as atrade association and is a member of the EuropeanSpas Association based in Brussels, the main credo of

which is to maintain the spa industry across Europe and

guarantee its quality. The Czech Association currently

has 44 members, which have over 20,000 beds

accounting for 80% of the total bed capacity of the spas

in this country. Membership is open only to those spa

facilities that are accredited by the VZP health insurance

company, which, before signing a contract with the

respective spa facility, ensures that its staff and

equipment comply with all the requirements of

    effective and purposeful medical care.

The Czech Spas Association logo attached to the

name of a spa facility means that the care provided

there is guaranteed by the state authorities. In

contrast to hotels in spa towns, such facilities are

officially registered as providers of health care in

the given field and have the official approval of the

Czech Ministry of Health to use local curative

    resources for medical purposes.

EUROPESPA med:international certificate for medical prevention and medical

wellness awarded by the European Spas Association (ESPA)

The European Spas Association (ESPA) representsthe interests of European spas from 20 nations inBrussels. With membership totalling over 1,200 spas

and spa towns, it is the largest international spa

association in Europe. The ESPA is officially based in

    Brussels.

The ESPA launched the international quality seal

EUROPESPA med in conjunction with leading experts

to boost transparency and fairness in competition.

Previously, neither guests nor health insurance

companies were able to tell the level of quality

behind attractively priced offers. After all, the standards

of cures and medical wellness vary considerably from

one country to the other. The EUROPESPA initiative

puts an end to this dilemma by enabling the quality

of spa facilities and medical treatment to be uniformly

rated across Europe, allowing easy comparison.

Assessment is carried out using an independent

audit made up of about 1,000 testing points covering

safety, hygiene and infrastructure mainly derived

from international standards and legislation. Attention

is paid to the quality of products and services as well

as the hardware in wellness areas, swimming pools,

kitchens and accommodation. 80 per cent of the

criteria have to be met in order to pass. So far,

around 40 hotels and clinics in 12 countries bear the

    EUROPESPA Seal of Quality.

Once it has been awarded, the seal is valid for three

years, although a re-audit must be passed after

18 months. All the certified hotels and clinics are

publicised on the www.europespa.eu quality portal,

where additional information is also available.

Karlovy Vary is the main spa town in West Bohemia,360 390 m above sea level. It was foundedaround 1350 by Holy Roman Emperor and King of

Bohemia Charles IV. Its busy streets and colonnades are

surrounded by tranquil wooded hills criss-crossed

with hiking and cycling paths, which are great for

walking all year round. These paths afford wonderful

views of the town nestling below in the valley between

the hills. A busy social calendar, numerous festivals

and international conferences make this largest spa

town in the Czech Republic one of the most popular

places in the world and a favourite among the rich and

famous. Karlovy Varys fame is also partly due to the

famous Becher Liqueur a liqueur sometimes called

the 13th spring the Mattoni brand of mineral water,

Karlovy Vary spa wafers and Moser crystal glass. The

nearby international airport makes it easy to travel to

    this famous spa town.

    Natural curative resources

This important spa town, founded in 1793, is situatedin the western corner of the Czech Republic. Theunique early 20th century atmosphere has been

preserved here thanks to its neo-classicist spa buildings

and pavilions. Thanks to this it is regarded as one of the

most picturesque locations in the country. The spa has

a mild climate, exceptionally clean air and is far from

the hustle and bustle of town life. The surrounding

parks are ideal for walks to the sound of music

emanating from the promenades. All this increases the

healthy effect of the mineral springs, which attract

those that want to improve their health in the spa.

    Natural curative resources

Naturally carbonated water, natural source of carbon

dioxide (spring gas), natural saline water, natural mineral

resources on tap in their balneological centres. Some

The West Bohemian spa town of Jchymov issituated in a deep wooded valley in the foothills

of the Ore Mountains. The surrounding hills provide

breathtaking views, astonishing in their beauty, at any

time of the year. At the beginning of the 20th century

a rich supply of radon was discovered by miners of

uranium ore in the former silver mines, leading to the

founding of the spa grounds and the first sanatorium.

The treatment on offer here is associated with

discoveries made by Marie Curie, and one of the spa

    houses is named after her.

Klterec nad Oh: A chateau housing collections of

Czech, Asian and European porcelain. Next to the

chateau there is an English-style park with statues by

    Jan Brokoff.

Blatno Canal: A renovated canal dating from 1540

taking water to Bo Dar. The canal is a reminder of

the days when tin, cobalt, and other metals were

    mined in the Ore Mountains.

Jchymov Hell: An educational trail starting in

Jchymov that acquaints visitors with places where

uranium was mined under inhuman conditions by

    tens of thousands of prisoners.

    Natural curative resources

Thermal radon water - with the highest concentration

of radon per litre in the country from the Bhounek,

    Agricola, Curie and C1 springs.

    Therapeutic specialisation

    Diseases afflicting the musculoskeletal system,

    peripheral nervous system and metabolism,

    dermatological diseases, post-operative and post-

    traumatic conditions, osteoporosis.

    Free time activities

In the town and surrounding area, there are tennis courts,

miniature golf, bike rental, fitness centres and a solarium. In

the nearby Ore Mountains are cross-country skiing, and

hiking and cycling trails. Tourists can also visit local sights

like the Royal Mint (Museum of Mining and Coin Production),

attend concerts in the Church of All Saints or in the spa

houses, or attend mass in the Church of St. Joachim.

Chateau Kynvart: The original 17th century building

style park with many small buildings. The rich collection

when its owner, Chancellor Metternich, was the Foreign

Minister and later the Chancellor of the Hapsburg

    noxious gasses.

The small town of Lzn Kynvart is located 780 metresabove sea level near Slavkov Forest. The specific

climatic conditions in the town ensure that the air is

exceedingly pure. This is one of the main factors that

make Kynvart the foremost Czech spa specialising in

the treatment of respiratory illnesses in children. The

spa, which has four mineral springs, was founded by the

Metternich family in the middle of the 19th century after

an analysis of local mineral springs and climatic

conditions had been carried out. An important turning

point in the history of the spa was the year 1950 when

the remarkable healing effects of the local climate were

discovered during a whooping cough epidemic. Since

then the spa has specialised in the treatment of children

between the ages of 2 and 15. Treatment was eventually

expanded to include that of allergic skin diseases and,

because of the suitability of the water, the treatment of

kidney and urinary tract diseases in children and

    teenagers.
