High hopes for tourism in Paphos this yearPlan for new dock to attract cruise ships announced

CYPRUS has been plagued with bad economic news of late, but things are looking up as Paphos beckons for bargain-hunting holidaymakers, with the resort proving to be a good value destination according to a new survey.

The resort has been named by the British Post Office as one of the best value hotspots for holidaymakers in 2014. It’s hoped the survey will give a welcome boost to local businesses this season.

The Post Office barometer shows that the resort has climbed to sixth place on the chart, as a top value for money destination.

According to the survey, Paphos has registered the biggest fall in prices at a staggering 21 percent.

The news is particularly posi-tive after several years of dropping visitor numbers due to the euro-pound exchange rate and a trend for Britons to explore alternative sun desti-nations.

Andrew Brown, of Post Office Travel Money, said: “The strength of sterling is great news for people planning holidays abroad and they can make sure their holiday cash stretches even further by doing their homework before booking

to pick a destination where prices have fallen furthest.

“Resort prices can make or break the holiday budget so choose a destination where healthy competition between res-taurants and bars has resulted in cheap-er meals and drinks,” he added.

The survey also recommended Spain’s Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca as being good value for money, along with the Portuguese Algarve.

But while British visitor numbers remain steady, it is actually Russian and continued on page 2

eastern European tourists that are the islands fastest-growing markets.

“We are cautiously optimistic that even the emerging markets, such as Russia and Ukraine, for which we had concerns, have retained the number of seats booked since the beginning of the year and there was no reduction. We have about 750,000 bookings from Rus-sia and about 100,000 bookings from Ukraine,” Minister of Tourism George Lakkotrypis said.

Agriculture minister Nicos Kouyialis has confirmed that there will be no water-cuts for homes and businesses this year, but warned that the situation facing the farming sector is one of ‘total destruction’

The news will come as relief to thousands of residents across the island who have had to endure crippling water cuts over the past few years during the scorching summer months.

“The rainfall is very poor, it seems that it is the worst since we began to take statistics, it is even worse than the rainfall we had in 2008 when we were forced to bring water by tankers – it is probably 50% compared to that corresponding period and it is 10% of what we expect every year….it is very bad,” Kouyialis said.

He said that water rationing for farms this summer is a certainty and that up to 14 million euros in compensation would be paid to farmers, who are struggling to cultivate their land.

“The capacity is very low right now and of course there are many problems in the sector of grains (agriculture), it seems that there is total destruction there. We estimated that we will have to compensate 13 -14 million euros for that sector only and we have asked the European Union, the Council of Ministers and the Commissioner of Agriculture and Rural Development to help.”

However, the minister said that domestic needs would be completely covered by desalination plants, which the looming threat of cuts to homes being ruled out.

“No, no. No water cuts, defiantly for potable water. For irrigation, for agricultural purposes mainly, we will give the quantities we gave from 2009 to 2012 which were adequate for that time. But for the next year we have a problem with agriculture. Concerning potable water, we have the desalination plants, but of course it’s an expensive method of producing potable water.”

Kouyialis also said the government had briefly discussed the possibility of buying water from Lebanon, but at this stage the prospect seemed very unlikely.

“The Lebanese Minister of Energy and Water visited me and he said Lebanon can supply Cyprus with water, but they never came back to give any proposals. It was just their own initiative, not ours. Our plan is the use of recycled water for irrigation, which is our problem,” Kouyialis said.

Kouyialis said that the government were now planning a long term strategy on the technology of waste water treatment and reuse.

“We will start a long term plan, this plan concerns the years 2015 -2020 and we will start using more and more recycled water. We have two options. One is in Larnaca where we have a plant which will be expanding over the next few years, plus we have in mind the plant in Milia, the bicommunal plant which was inaugurated a few weeks ago.”

The new plant at Milia, which opened last month will serve a population of 270,000 people from both communities and will be able to treat an average of 30,000 m3/day. The project – worth approx. 25 million Euros - was jointly funded by the Sewerage Board of Nicosia (70%), and the European Union (30%) on behalf of the Turkish Cypriot Community.

Relief as minister confirms no water cuts in Cyprus this year

The Minister also said that last year Cyprus welcomed 2.4 million visitors, recording an increase in tourism revenue by 8,2 percent, despite the 2.4 percent decline in arrivals.

President of the Association of Cyprus Travel Agents (ACTA) Victor Mantovani said that incoming tourism had a moderate course in 2013.

“Without the booming of the Russian market”, he said, “things would have been much worse”.

The CTO Director General Marios Hannides said that Cyprus is not just an island of “sun and sea” but also a tourist destination that offers a series of alternative forms of tourism such as medical, religious and sports tourism.

Income from tourism accounts for around 12 percent of Cyprus’s GDP PAPHOS 2017 – NEW DOCK FOR CRUISE SHIPS PLANNEDSeparately, the swift implementation of projects pending for “Paphos 2017- European Capi-

tal of Culture” has been decided during a meeting at the House of Representatives, chaired by Speaker of the House Yiannakis Omirou.

The meeting was attended by Finance Minister Haris Georgiades and Education and Cul-ture Minister Costas Kadis, Paphos Mayor Savas Vergas, the Director of the Paphos 2017 and other officials from the Paphos district.

Omirou said decisions were taken to implement the projects necessary for the successful outcome of the Paphos2017.

Omirou said that procedures will be speeded up to release 5 million euro which the Cabinet has already approved and that projects which could be co-funded by the European Union will be presented to the European Commission in July.

He also said that the Ports Authority together with the Communications and Works Minis-try will go ahead with building a dock at Paphos Port to enable cruise ships berth - something which will boost the city’s tourist and economic development and indirectly help the Paphos 2017 aims.

Creepy crawlies, in the form of black tarantulas, has forced residents and businesses in the old part of Limassol to seek help from the authorities.Over the past month there has been a spate of reports about spiders tak-ing up residence in homes and shops in the district. The head of the Limassol Health Services admitted that after the drainage works carried out in the old town the presence of the huge hairy spiders had increased.Experts say the large black arachnids, which are considered to be of the tarantula species, are relatively harmless to humans – but are a terrifying sight. The old sewer reconstruction projects and the creation of new sewers have forced many of the spiders to move above ground.Last month a new book called Sixty Cypriot Spiders was published, it is the first book ever written on the spider fauna of the island. From the great number of spider species inhabiting the island the author has selected those spiders that are more likely to be met in the field, gar-den or house, including the most extraordinary and the most venomous species.Spiders like the Tarantula, the Black Widow and the Recluse are all Cyp-riot residents. “This book is set to become the first step towards creating a basis for the knowledge and understanding of spiders in Cyprus. After reading it, I don’t see how anyone could fail to see spiders in a new light,” Said Paul Hillyard, renoened spider author and former curator of spiders at the Natural History Museum of London.

A LARGE GROUP of disgruntled citizens turned the entrance of the Paralimni Town Hall into a beach last month, to protest against what they describe as the ‘arbitrary, abusive and illegal interventions of the Paralimni Municipality’ along the eastern coastline.

Protesters are furious at large scale development of pristine stretches of coastline near the resort of Protaras, which they say were executed without any scientific or environmental studies.

They are angry that bulldozers have been ripping apart rock formations and greenery along the eastern coast and camped outside the Town Hall with banners, deckchairs and even beach games in an effort to catch the mayors attention, however he was nowhere to be seen.

The mayor of Paralimni was invited to comment on the situation, but did not return calls.

Paralimni Town Hall becomes beach as protesters express fury at ‘coastal destruction’ More than 400 million eligible voters living in the EU’s 28 member states,

including Cyprus, will choose their representatives for the European Parliament this month.

Low turnout expected as Cyprus prepares for EU vote

Ballots open in Cyprus on May 25th.

Alexanda Attalides, Acting Head of the European Parliament Office in Nicosia has underlined that the bigger the turnout in the elections, the bigger the message will be that the Cyprus society has realized the role Europe plays in our lives and how it can better support the citizens and their problems.

The head of the election services, Demetris Demetriou, said that he expects abstention from the elections to be larger than participation.

However, after several years of financial woes and rising unemployment across the continent, radical nationalist and anti-EU parties are hoping to cash in on voter apathy across the bloc.

Generally, turnout is on a downward slide – with voters numbers having fallen at every European election since 1979.

Karel Lanoo from the Centre for European Policy Studies isn’t surprised though - he says it’s hard for the public to love an institution which is on the whole a technocratic entity.

“On the core the EU is seen to be far too much as a technical construct and not significantly a construct that you can fall in love with – it’s a technocratic thing. It’s a rational issue all the time – say, we do this to tackle that problem. It’s not something which stirs an emotion that you can fall in love with,” he says.

A more serious concern is that the expected low turn-out could have unpleasant consequences for the make-up of the future parliament and the political spectrum in Europe.

EurActiv’s Editor Georgi Gotev says the lower turnout will make it easier for more radical parties to do well and create problems for the established centre-right, Socialists, Greens and Liberals.

“There will be lots of parties, some of them nationalist, secessionist, some of them anti European and as a result we have a different situation in the European parliament where the main stream political forces will need to enter into coalition,” says Gotev.

Cyprus joined the EU in 2004. The 2014 elections mark the ten year anniversary since the island became a member state. In 2008 Cyprus joined the Eurozone while in July 2012 it assumed for the first time the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

News services report that “100 thousand people are expected to come to Cy-prus for the concert, especially from Turkey. A large open field venue which can host 100 thousand people is being built by the university.”

Writing on his website, front man Ian Gillan says the group, as always, isn’t tak-ing sides and indicated that the concert will go ahead as scheduled.

“Amongst many of the countries we have visited in our peripatetic jaunts are Israel, Lebanon, Russia, Georgia, Ukraine, Greece, Turkey, Armenia, USA, Venezuela, Argentina, UK, China and Japan — all of which have a conflict with somebody or another, and all with behaviour and traditions that someone else doesn’t like,” he said.

“And may I add that our many previous visits to Turkey and Greece have been fabulous; I personally have friends in both countries,” Gillan added.

In the past many artists including Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, and Justin Timber-lake have cancelled concerts in the north after learning the about the political situation in Cyprus.

Last year it was widely reported that celebrity singer Julio Iglesias was suing the breakaway state for $10 million in damages due to claims he had been “de-ceived” after being invited to do a gig in occupied Kyrenia.

Deep Purple was formed in Hertford in 1968, they are considered to be among the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock.

In an interview with Radio Napa, lead singer Ian Gillan confirmed that the free public concert will go ahead, but revealed that the band had discussed the pos-sibility of cancelling the performance.

“When you say did we thought about pulling out – of course we thought about it, but it was never ever a question I think of saying yes we will pull out,” Gillan said.

Critics say the concert will lend credence to the 1974 invasion by Turkey, which re-sulted in the partition of the island.

“I certainly do not want to get involved in one side or the other, it’s an historical dis-agreement and because of all this I have read a lot of the history, but I’m not going to comment on that,” Gillan said.

“We are musicians and hopefully music is an uplifting thing and so will act as a posi-tive force, that’s all I hope for – I don’t wish to interfere in anyone’s affairs and I don’t wish also for any offence to be taken where none is intended.”

Thousands of people have taken to the internet in protest at the planned perfor-mance, with the official Deep Purple fan page becoming a hotbed of discussion on the controversial concert.

“I see hope always, I’m an optimist – I always see the reaching out of hands. In terms of the balance of whether it will do more harm than good, I don’t think it will,” he added.

Deep Purple gig in north causes upsetBRITISH ROCK band Deep Purple has announced a concert at the ‘Near East University’ in occupied northern Cyprus, scheduled for 24th of May.

Controversial Deep Purple concert will go aheadDEEP PURPLE will perform a concert in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus despite criticism that the appearance will make a political statement.

The President was referring to the clashes which took place last month between fans of Cyprus` football teams APOEL and AEL.

Nine fans and six police officers were injured, while a 27-year-old man lost an eye when hit by one of the rocks that fans were throwing.

E2014 has seen Border Choice launch its new ‘SHARK FORCE’ products. Especially developed by Border Choice Ltd, these borders use new methods and materials to bite back against grime and sun tan oils whilst guaranteeing your pool to ‘look like new’. Says Martin Haigh, Managing Director, our ‘self fit’ market has really taken off this year since we made our borders even easier to fit. What is more, we test our border to destruction to ensure they do the job!

Our ‘SHARK FORCE’ products use some of the best methods and quality materials available on the market ensuring your border is durable and easy to clean. Not everyone knows that our borders fit equally as well to tiles as they do to liners and fibreglass. Replacing tiles can be a very expensive cost. We have

a number of clients who want to hide the ‘build up’ of lime-scale, etc. that has built up over the years around the water line or hide cracks that have appeared in the times. We recently filled the cracks in tiles of a large communal pool before fitting a border, in doing so gave the pool character, sorted the cracks out, hid the lime-scale and made the pool easier to maintain. So if you have a tiled pool why not consider fitting a border!

‘Border Choice borders are finding that more and more people are taking advantage of the new Easy Fit product and fitting their own borders

We have also added one or two new designs - check them out at

Are Protein powders just for body builders and athletes or can they also be for the everyday person that is interested in staying in shape and maybe losing a few kilo`s?Adipose tissue (fat) verses Lean muscle tissue, even for the above averagely fit person itcan sometimes be difficult to achieve a better shape even when exercis-ing.

When westart exercising again after an extended lay-off, the first few kilo`s come offreasonably easy due to eating a littleless and more exercising. But then the weight loss slows down or stops, why? Some of the initial weight loss can be fluid and to maintain the weight loss we have to reduce your intake of food and maintain or increase the exercise levels. This can leave you very hungry so you eat more and generally the things that you are craving are not the types of food that will help with thechanging you.

If your body has the right building blocks (proteins and amino acids) and your appetite is satisfied, things can gradually change and along with those cravings and eating habits. Remember, not all protein supple-ments are created equal.

Protein Powder – Is it just for Body Builders or can it help to change your BodyShape?

The Next Generation of Performance Protein is here

Scientifically formulated to increase protein synthesis and anabolic response, proto-col Pro Gold is light-years ahead of the competition. Pro Gold gives a pro-tein performance that will match the intensity of your workout and deliver results that you can both see and feel.

For far too long protein manufacturers have just focused consumer’s attention on the quality of their Whey protein, without making any advances in the quality of their formulations… until now! proto-col are the first manufacturer in the world to combine Whey and Collagen (type II & III) protein in a unique, powerful perfor-mance and recovery product.

Each tasty 25g serving of Pro Gold delivers 20g* of protein. The Whey protein is an 80% concentrate and the Collagen protein is a 97% pure protein. No protein in the market delivers that much bioavailable protein in a single serving.

Pro Gold is packed full of Essential Amino Acids (EAAs), which are requiredby the body to build new tissue and help with the cellular repair that takes place when muscles are recovering from exercise.Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine are also known as ‘Branch Chain Amino Acids’ or BCAAs. Branched chain amino acids have jumped to the forefront of research in recent years and the results have been turning heads within the athletic world. We now know that BCAAs go far beyond simply being building blocks for muscle tissue and can affect muscle growth through pathways few thought possible.

Collagen is the main structural protein of the body. As the main component of connective tissue, it is the most abundant protein in the body making up 25% to 35% of the whole-body protein content. Collagen, in the form of elongated fibrils, is mostly found in fibrous tissues such as tendons, ligaments, skin and plays an important role in the repair of muscle tissue.

Getting the right amount of protein, EAAs and BCAAs in a diet can help athletes to improve their physique and assist quicker recovery from exercise. The pro-teins in Pro Goldhave been scientifically formulated to improve protein synthesis to support recovery and aid muscle growth. Pro Gold collagen protein also strengthens your ligaments, tendons and connective tissue, making Pro Gold the one of the most powerful protein blends in the World.

Not all protein supplements are created equal… choose Pro Gold to give your body the quality protein it deserves and get the results you are working hard for.

The Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows are practising in the sunny skies of Cyprus for the next few weeks.

The team have been operating from the Akrotiri base since the beginning of April, as training is completed for its 50th display season.

The Red Arrows, is one of the world’s premier aerobatic display teams, representing the speed, agility and precision of the Royal Air Force.

The team is the public face of the service and has visited Cyprus for pre-season training since 1979.

This year is the Red Arrows’ 50th display season and, to celebrate the occasion, the team’s fleet of jets has received a new look.

A striking Union flag design has been unveiled on the tailfins of each of the Hawk aircraft – marking the biggest change to the livery of the jets in the Team’s history.

Designed by the Air Media Centre at RAF High Wycombe, the tail fin features outlines of both aircraft as a tribute to the team’s heritage and current operations.

THE Ministry of Agriculture are engaging in long-term strategic planning to promote the island’s wine.

Minister Nicos Kouyialis has said that wine production is a priority sector and plans include the development of wine culture, as well.

He announced that the Cyprus wine contest will take place this year between June 4 to 7 in Limassol.

The wine industry is a significant contributor to the Cypriot economy through cultivation, production, employment, export and tourism.

Actions to promote Cyprus wine must be put in a concrete framework; the Minister went on, noting that intense consultations with all stakeholders will be held in the coming time, to define the context of strategic planning.

The aim is to assist both wine culture and wine making and thus the Cyprus economy.

Cyprus has been a vine-growing and wine-producing country for millennia. Internationally, it is best known for Commandaria wine. Most wine production remains based on a few varieties of local grapes such as Mavro and Xynisteri although international varieties are also cultivated.

The climate allows for cultivation of most grape varieties. However local varietals (Mavro and Xynisteri) constitute the bulk of current plantations. Maratheftiko is an ancient grape varietal that is currently being revived.

For those interested in the history of Cyprus wine, a visit to the Wine Museum is a must. Situated in the heart of the wine producing countryside a short distance from Limassol in the village of Erimi, the Cyprus Wine Museum takes you on a journey through the history of wine making in on the island.

Photographic back drops and audiovisual presentations as well as ancient jars and vases, medieval drinking vessels, old documents and instruments encompass all aspects of wine production.

Government to give big push in promoting Cyprus wines

University of Leicester researchers looked at 256 migrants from Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands, France, and 73 from the UK, who relocated to Cyprus, Spain, Portugal and Greece in search of a new life.

The migrants were asked how happy they were on a scale of one to 10 compared with 56,000 people who stayed in the northern countries.

It was revealed that the migrants were less happy, scoring 7.3 out of ten, compared with the average of 7.5.

And the gap was even higher for Brits with migrants four per cent less happy than those back in the UK.

“Migration itself can be disruptive to other dimensions of people’s lives – social ties, sense of belonging – possibly with consequences for their happiness,” says Dr David Bartram, of the University of Leicester.

It is estimated that almost 3,000 Britons move abroad each week, with around five million now living outside the UK.

Meanwhile, nearly 90,000 Britons abandoned their Mediterranean dreams in Spain last year.

Feeling miserable? You should have not moved abroad says new study

Britons that migrate to the Mediterranean are less happy than if they had stayed at home a new academic study has found.

THE BRAND NEW ‘Animal Party Cyprus’ has launched at an event in Nicosia.

The APC will participate for the first time in the European elections that will take place in Cyprus on the 25th of May.

The event was addressed among others by the Minister of Agriculture Nicos Kouyialis, on behalf of President Anastasiades, the founder and coordinator of the AP, Kyriakos Kyriakou, and the leader of the Netherlands Party for Animals, Dutch MP Marianne Thieme.

Supporters say that Cyprus needs a political party to stand up for animals after a spike in abuse on the island.

“Within two months we are actually making history, we do have support from all over Cyprus. We are expecting more and more that society to embrace this new political entity for animals,” founder Kyriacos Kyriacou told the Cyprus Reporter.

The party says it will have strong policies on all animal issues and its members have a record of taking action in cases where animal abuse has been discovered.

Addressing the parties opening event, Dutch MP Marianne Thieme said that there are animal parties also in Austria, Italy, Portugal, Germany, the UK, Danemark, Spain, Switzerland, Canada, the US, Australia and Turkey.

She added that when the Animal Party in the Netherlands was founded, people considered it to be `a joke`.

Priorities for the party include the registration and micro-chipping of pets and sterilisation programmes to reduce the number of abandoned animals.

A recent spate of animal related crime included a small dog being deliberately shot in the face and in December a 64-year old was charged after allegedly tying his dog to the rear bumper of his car and dragging it through the streets of Limassol.

New Cyprus political party demands clampdown on animal abuse

Celebrations at ‘Ollies’ in Tremithousa went on into the night on Monday 31st March after Graham, a former Metropolitan Police Special Branch Officer, returned from his tour of seven European destinations in as many days in aid of The Cancer Patients Support Group and St. Michael’s Hospice.

Graham is now a speaker on cruise liners and it was not difficult to see where his skills lay as he soon had his audience in fits of laughter as he regaled us with stories of his adventures across the miles.

It had all started at Pafos Airport in Cyprus on Tuesday the 25th of March as countless supporters sang Graham off to the strains of ‘Leaving On A Jet Plane’ sung by much loved choir The Paphos Zingers. Passengers arriving and departing from Pafos gave generously in several denominations, no doubt thinking that the singing and hand clapping where all part of the warm arrival to this wonderful country.

‘Up, Up And Away’ found Graham heading for the beautiful historic Italian city of Milan before an early flight the next day to Vilnius in Lithuania, where he found the airport and combination of dimly lit streets and elaborate facades a real throw back to the days of communism. It seemed a depressing place until he wandered through the old city gates to find a different world of beautiful architectural buildings, bright lights and a decent beer !

Oslo in Norway the next day found him staying with friends in a beautiful fishing village. Not for long though as a small glass of beer cost around €6.

Graham tells us that apart from the comparison in beer prices he was fascinated by the different people, cultures and life styles he encountered in his travels through Italy, Lithuania, Norway, Germany, England and Greece and a more comprehensive account can be found on his Face Book Page ‘Graham’s Cash Magnet Tour’.

His last evening away from Cyprus was spent in Thessaloniki at the Four Seasons. Don’t be fooled by the name it had very poor facilities, smelled of stale tobacco and the food left much to be desired. ‘Couldn’t wait to get out of there’ says Graham as he headed for his flight to Cyprus where he was met at the aircraft on arrival in Pafos by Hermes Airport Director Andy Frangos who carried his bag through arrivals to be greeted by his many fans to the strains of ‘Welcome Home’ from The Zingers and then off to his home village of Mandria for a welcome beer.

At ‘Ollies’ Graham confirmed that money was still coming in for the charities but it looked like a final figure of close to €4,000 had been raised through the generosity of local companies such as Peter Morton and UK based Flightline Support. Sincere thanks also go to Bejay Browne of Rock FM, The Paphos Post and Cyprus Living.

Chairman Tom Handley from the Cancer Patients Support Group and Fundraising Chairman Tony Ambrose from St. Michael’s Hospice were on hand to give their thanks to Graham for this most unusual fundraising event. Graham also confirmed the good news that St. Michael’s will open its doors on the 7th July and all present gave their support and wished the new hospice very well for its future.

Dear Linda There seems to be some confusion about this issue from quite a few of my readers. I am taking the liberty of combining several related letters I have received and answering all of them here. So, thank you Stella, Mick, Leslie and Harold for your letters. I hope the following satisfies you all.In the UK & USA the respective departments that deal with customs and excise define an object of more than 100 years of age for the purposes of taxation as, ANTIQUE.The word antique is derived from the Latin antiquus; meaning old or ancient. The items are collected or desirable because of its age, beauty, rarity, condition, utility, personal emotional connection, and/or other unique features. It is an object that represents a previous era or time period in human society.Antiques are usually objects that show some degree of craftsmanship—or a certain attention to design, such as a desk or an early automobile. So if it is not antique could it be termed collectable? A collectable or collectible even collector’s item is any object regarded as being of value or interest to a collector (not necessarily monetarily valuable or antique). There are numerous types of collectables and terms to denote those types. A “manufactured” collectable (often referred to as a contemporary collectable) is an item made specifically for people to collect. The terms special edition, limited edition and variants such as deluxe edition, collector’s edition and others, fall under the category of manufactured collectable and are used as a marketing incentive for various kinds of products, originally published products related to the arts, such as books, prints or recorded music and films, but now including cars, fine wine and other collectables. A limited edition is restricted in the number of copies produced, although in fact the number may be very low or very high a special edition implies there is extra material of some kind included. Well if it is not antique or collectable could it be vintage. The term vintage is a wine making term. A vintage wine is one made from grapes that were all, or primarily, grown and harvested in a single specified year.Over the last few years the term vintage has been hijacked. It is used as a pretty good marketing tool along with the term, RETRO.Both terms are to a degree interchangeable when used in respect of describing furniture, clothes, art, music etc. Retro style is style that is consciously derivative or imitative of trends, modes, fashions, or attitudes of the recent past. It generally implies a vintage of at least fifteen or twenty years. For example, clothing from the 1980s or 1990s could be retro. The word “retro” derives from the Latin prefix retro, meaning “backwards, or in past times” – particularly as seen in the words retrograde, implying a movement toward the past instead of a progress toward the future, and retrospective, referring to a nostalgic (or critical) eye toward the past.I hope that I have helped explain the different terms or at least not confused you even more!

Dear Eric

In use for over 40 years these reliable machines were designed by George Gibson. He was grand-ly titled London Transports Ticket machine Superintendent. Most of these machines would have printed upwards of 5 million tickets in their average lifetime.

If like me you are of a certain age you too will recall the wonderful noise they made when op-erated.

Depending on the usual factors condition age etc you could be looking up to 700 Euros to the right buyer.

Hope that helpsBen

Before I sign off this month I would like to thank you for

all your emails, Special Events for June, Antiques and

Collectables will be held on June 21st 2014.

Dear Ben

Can you settle a bet for me, what is it that makes an antique an antique? I was told that anything over 50 years of age is considered antique. Was I misinformed?

Dear Ben

Dear BenMy dad was a bus conductor on the London Buses in the 1960’s and 1970’s. When he passed away we cleared his house and found his old ticket machine in a box. It still works! I do not think we would sell it but does it have a value?

1928: There appears to no doubt that Cyprus is capable of producing tobacco of very fair quality, says a Colonial Office report. Cyprus cigarettes, the report adds, are sent all over the world, and enjoy an excellent reputation.2009: Cypriot pop star Peter Andre will return to the UK this week for “show-down talks” with wife Katie Price over their stricken marriage, reports the Daily Mirror. The paper says the couple will meet at a neutral location on Thursday to make arrangements for the future care of their children.2009: A survey shows that a vast majority of Cypriots believe Cyprus’ ac-cession to the EU and its integration with central and eastern Europe has greatly contributed to job losses on the island. The Eurobarometer survey shows that just under 73 per cent of those questioned believe unemploy-ment has increased due to the influx of foreign workers.2010: Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus Athanasios Orphanides has sounded the alarm bell over the state of the Cypriot economy, saying that if pub-lic expenses continue to rise that would have a negative impact on the economy.2010: Israel has told an aid agency it will not allow aid ships to enter Pales-tinian territory. A fleet of humanitarian aid ships, on the way from Ireland, Greece and Turkey, have been heading toward the small coastal enclave of Gaza to deliver the humanitarian aid. Their captains had gathered the ships in waters off Cyprus, waiting for Israeli permission to sail into Gaza.2011: Tourism officials are keeping a close watch on events as an eruption by Iceland’s Grimsvotn volcano has caused some airlines to cancel flights over parts of Europe, where clouds of volcanic ash could disrupt flights. So far all scheduled flights to and from Cyprus are running as normal.2011: One in every four adults in Cyprus suffers from hypertension, while the disease is estimated to cause the death to seven million people world-wide annually. These figures were released during a Press Conference on the occasion of the World Hypertension Day.2012: A 5.4 magnitude earthquake was felt in the south-eastern coastal area of Larnaca. According to the Geological Survey Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment, the quake epicenter was 70 km south of Larnaca town and a focal depth of about 50 km.2012: Zumba classes have arrived in the party capital of Ayia Napa. Accord-ing to organisers, Zumba is an effective, exhilarating, Latin-inspired, easy to follow, calorie-burning dance fitness-party that will leave you invigorated, refreshed and full of life.2013: A Cyprus exit from the Eurozone or the exit of any other member state facing problems is not a solution and instead all the Eurozone members should join forces to strengthen the foundations of the Euro, Christopher Pis-sarides, winner of the 2010 Noble Prize in Economics has stressed.2013: British MEP Mary Honeyball called on IMF Chief Christine Lagarde to “come to her senses” and to proceed with stimulus measures not auster-ity. Honeyball was speaking after a meeting she had with leftwing AKEL Secretary General Andros Kyprianou in Nicosia.

This Month in Cyprus History

The flight was the eighth proving flight undertaken by British European Airways in preparation for the start of their new services to Cyprus and Istanbul.

Journalist Ernest Stott was aboard:

Unfortunately our flight coincided with one of those periods of bad weather that visit the Mediterranean occasionally. We were cloud at 3,000 ft. over London, and then climbed out into occasional blue sky 20,000 ft. But the next time saw land was when we came to Rome.

By that time it was also raining heavily, and the cloud base was much lower than in London.

A brief stop for refuelling and off went above the cloud towards Athens.

The sun glinting through the clouds provided some wonderful colour effects. Cloud obscured Naples, the Isle of Elba and the extreme tip of Corsica, but could clearly see the flare-path at Athens airfield lighted by “goose-necks” belching flame.

More fuel was taken on and in less than an hour we were climbing into blue-black starlit sky on the last leg of the journey Cyprus.

Nearly four hours later Nicosia came on our starboard wing, fairyland of lights.

The two new routes proved popular with business men and holidaymakers, with a representative of BEA confirming that the two services were heavily booked.

THIS MONTH in 1953 a Vickers Viscount turbo-prop air liner dipped down

through the haze over London and landed after completing a 4,000-mile

journey from London to Cyprus just under twenty actual flying hours – it

was dawn of a new age in passenger travel for Cyprus, which until then

had been connected to the world primarily by ocean liners.

Noel Josephides, Chairman of AGTA in the United Kingdom, said: “Cyprus Air-ways used to dominate the British scene but the inability of the airline’s manage-ment to adapt to modern trading methods has seen it virtually disappear from the UK, which is still the main inbound market to the island.”

However, last month CA Chairman Tony Antoniou said the economic situation of the company is ‘very good’ and the company can look with optimism into the future.

Antoniou was speaking at a press conference, during which the company pre-sented the results of a survey, which was conducted earlier this year.

He said survey showed that “the very negative image of Cyprus Airways, a year ago, among the people, the politicians and the media has changed and the company is supported by the vast majority of Cypriots”.

He added that this has helped the company “reverse the negative economic trend and enter into a growth path, which will bring the desired results.”

Cyprus Airways office in London closes marking end of an eraTHE CYPRUS AIRWAYS office in London has shut down after over four decades of operation, with staff at the office being made redundant.

Cyprus` top athletes took part in the “Queen’s Baton Relay” events in all major towns of the island in view of the 20th Commonwealth Games earlier this month.

The events were organized by the Cyprus Commonwealth Games Committee in collaboration with the British High Commission .

The relay covered a distance of 2-3 kilometers in every city, before it reached its final destination, Nicosia.

Relay runners were made up of leading Cypriot athletes who won medals in Olympic, Commonwealth and Mediterranean Games.

The British High Commissioner Matthew Kidd said that Commonwealth Games is a major sporting event which highlights the importance and value of team spirit.

Cyprus has competed in seven Commonwealth Games, making its first appear-ance in 1978, and missing only one event since, in 1986. Cypriot athletes have won twenty Commonwealth medals, most of them in Shooting.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games, officially the XX Commonwealth Games, will be held in Glasgow over 11 days of competition from 23 July to 3 August 2014.

It will be the largest multi-sport event ever held in Scotland.

Cyprus’ top athletes took part in ‘Queen’s Baton Relay’ events

Apoel and Omonia football clubs also sent some of their players to support the effort, and donated goodies which were distributed to the helpers.

“It was very hot work, but everyone enjoyed it - and 950 kilos sorted in three hours shows just how hard they all worked”. We’re already talking about next year - and hope many more people will come and help us do the full ton of cans,” Vice president of Cans for Kids, Rosie Charalambous told the Cyprus Reporter.

Since 1990, Cans for Kids have collected over 25 million cans with over €260,000 euros worth of equipment being donated to the Makarios Hospital in Nicosia.

At a glittering ceremony earlier this year in Salzburg, Austria, Cans For Kids was awarded the World Energy Globe for the category “Youth” in recognition of its work promoting volunteerism in Cyprus, as well as its contribution to the improvement of medical care for sick children on the island.

From more than 1000 entries the international Energy Globe Jury selected 16 nominated projects from all continents. The projects ranged from simple initiatives to use our natural resources carefully, high-tech innovations for energy efficiency to the intelligent employment of renewable energies and large scale awareness building focusing on sustainability.

They say that every picture tells a story and this is our story. We are just some of the 50 puppies currently at PAWS Dog Shelter in Paphos. Some of us were only about 2 or 3 weeks old when we were dumped near to the shelter with our little brothers and sisters. We could not possibly have survived there, so some caring volunteers fostered and looked after us through difficult times, getting up during the night so that we could be fed and cleaned and taking us to the vet if we were unwell.

We have had the benefit of human contact and affection which is very important at a young age. Our favourite pastimes are running and playing with our siblings and toys. We love it when visitors come to the shelter, look around and say ‘hello’ to us. Now we are old enough to take our next big steps and go to new and lov-ing owners. What can be more exciting than exploring more of the world under guidance and supervision?

Could you be my new owner? We would love to meet you.

Due to the increase in number of puppies being brought to the shelter, PAWS have decided to offer puppies to good homes free of charge. However all adopted puppies must be registered with the Government Vet before they can be taken home. Costs of injections and micro-chipping will be settled by PAWS Dog Shelter if the puppy is homed in Cyprus. However, if the puppy were to be homed abroad, the new owners would be required to finance the travel costs I.e. flights, crates etc.

PAWS Dog Shelter is open every day between 08.00 a.m. and 1200 midday.

A lot of thought should go into making your house (and garden) safe for the puppy before his arrival. Take care to consider items in or outside your home that could be dangerous to your dog. All objects which your puppy may be tempted to chew should be removed or moved to a place which the puppy cannot access.

Listed here are a few basic supplies which will make a big difference when it comes to help-ing your puppy adjust to his new home:

Cyprus Children with Special Needs Extreme Fundraiser

Sir,

My brother and I are taking part in an event in the UK called ‘the tough mudder’.

It is advertised as ‘probably the toughest event on the planet’ and we are trying to raise enough money through sponsorship to be able to buy a special piece of equipment for ALMA, a children’s special needs school in Cyprus that is part of the Theotokos Foundation Charity.

This specialist ergometer (A motomed as it’s called) will greatly improve the quality of life for the children there.

We were wondering if you could mention our charity event for a little publicity in your paper. It would greatly improve our chances of reaching our target (€4300) and being able to help the children.

Details of the event are on Facebook, search for: Cyprus Children with Special Needs Extreme Fundraiser

Much appreciated for any help

Alexis Economides

Denmark was part of the first group of countries to send peacekeepers to Cyprus, with the first soldiers of the UNFICYP Danish Contingent (DANCON) arriving in May 1964.

Since then 22,623 Danish peacekeepers served in Cyprus until their departure in 1996, and 25 lost their life while serving in Cyprus.

The honorary plaque to commemorate Denmark`s 32 years of service was unveiled at Ledra Pallas, in the presence of the Danish Ambassador Casper Klynge.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), which was set up in 1964 to prevent further fighting between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities on the island and bring about a return to normal conditions.

UNFICYP is one of the longest-running UN peacekeeping missions.

Veteran Danish peacekeepers returnDanish peacekeepers who took part in the first UNFICYP mission to the island have paid a return visit to Cyprus, to revisit the buffer zone and lay a commemorative plaque at a ceremony at the Ledra Palace hotel.

Born Roderick David Stewart in Highgate, London, on January 10, 1945, Rod was the youngest of Scottish-born Robert and Elsie Stewart’s five children. He taught himself to play the guitar aged 12, and, inspired by the music of Lonnie Donegan, began playing in local skiffle groups as a teen. In the early 1960s after giving up an apprenticeship with the Brentford Football Club he became a full-time musician. His first big break came in 1964, from British blues legend Long John Baldry. Rod released his first solo album, marking the beginning of a two-pronged career that would last until The Faces, the last rock group with which he would be associated split in 1975. Rod became a popular soloist in the US where his first album broke into the top 100 and a stateside tour boosted his profile. In 1971, while topping the charts with The Faces, he shot to international stardom with the number one hit Maggie May.

The Seventies were great to Rod, who had number one singles with Tonight’s The Night and the disco-infused Do Ya Think I’m Sexy. His first Grammy came for Downtown Train. His career then took a more stylish and glamorous turn in 2002 with two bright spots in his life, a Grammy nomination for his album of classics, It Had To Be You: The Great American Songbook and his continuing romance with golden-haired model Penny Lancaster, to whom he became engaged in early 2005. “When I was in The Faces and we had an album coming out, we wouldn’t go and break up hotel rooms or go out with tarts to get ourselves in the papers,”. “We broke up hotel rooms and went out with tarts because we bloody felt like it.”
