1 to 7 Peak Programme Meter Drive Amplifier

PPM 131

PPM 131 is a small, high quality meter drive amplifie r, ideal for incorporation 1nto m1xers and other equipment where unbalanced s1gnals are present. If necessary, input balancing can be achieved by a transformer avail able from Soundex.

There IS adequate ga1n to cope with non-standard leve ls.

Power supplies present no prob lem to the PPM 131 , s1nce apart from being protected against reverse b1as1ng , the amp li fier may be operated from e1ther s1ngi <c' or dual ra il power - the OV generator on board t an be linked in or out of use. • •

Each PPM 131 leaves the Soundex fac tory hav1ng been al igned , both statically and ballistically , to the BS5428 spec ification and because on ly high stability close tolerance components are used , re-a l1gnment 1s achieved in two steps

The PPM 131 is intended to be secured directly onto the input studs of the meter movement and various fixing locations make this a possibility with most commonly used meters . All other electrical connections are made via a 5 pin , 0.1 " pitch connector supplied with the PPM 131

Audio should be connected to pin 5. VR1 is used to attenuate the input and therefore sets the gain of the PPM 131 Independently of law. Balancing of the aud io 1nput can be achieved by the use of a balancing transformer as shown below. The Soundex BTX1 is a suitable 1:1 transformer designed to work into 1 OK ohm load

Commissioning Each PPM 131 has been carefully aligned to meet the specifications previously mentioned and it will be found that apart from minor gain adjustment using VR1 , no other adjustments are necessary. However, it is recommended that the following checks are carried out to ensure correct function and where necessary the remedial procedures can be followed. Before powering up the PPM 131 , check power and aud io connections are correct and that the meter is mechanically zeroed. With no audio signals present, turn on power and confirm that the meter needle remains at zero. (There may be an initial jolt to the meter needle). Any zero error at this stage may be removed using VR2. Connect audio and apply 0 level tone , 1KHz (0.77459V R.M.S.) and see that the meter indicates 0 level (MK4). If not, adjust VR1 and afterwards confirm that all · other points on the scale are within tolerance by application of appropriate tone levels. It will normal ly be found that all points can be toleranced with this one adjustment , but if not proceed to law adjustment.

Law Adjustments Proceed as for commissioning but, instead of applying 0 level tone alld adjusting VR1 to obtain 0 level (MK4) on the meter, apply -8dB tone and adjust VR1 to obtain -8dB (MK2) on the meter. Then apply +8dB tone and adjust VR3 to set +8dB (MK6) on the meter. The law should then be correct and may be verified by application of appropriate tone levels without further adjustments to the PPM 131 N.B. Extraneous fe rrous objects (including mounting panel ) in the proximity of the meter movement will interfere with its linearity, therefore confirm that this phenomenon is not responsible if alignment difficulties occur.

Attack and Decay R14 sets the decay time and R13 sets the attack time. These have been factory set by tone burst generator (see specification). When two PPM 131 's are used as a stereo pair it may be necessary to maintain tracking of the two meters on decay. This should be done by speeding up the slower meter with a high value resistor placed in parallel with R14. Experience has shown that differing attack times are not perceivable when both are within specification.
