GENESIS SERIES THE FALL

June 14, 2020

Charles Dickens begins his classic, A Tale of Two Cities, saying, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” This is not only a synopsis of the time before the French Revolution, it is a synopsis of all history. The book of Genesis looks at the tension between the best and the worst and offers hope that the best is yet to come. God’s good creation was quickly corrupted by a bad decision. OPENING SONG One Thing Remains (Your Love Never Fails) Higher than the mountains that I

face. Stronger than the power of the grave. Constant in the trial and the change. One thing remains, One thing remains.

Your love never fails, It never gives up, Never runs out on me.

Your love never fails, It never gives up, Never runs out on me. Your love...

On and on and on and on it goes. It overwhelms and satisfies my soul. And I never ever have to be afraid. One thing remains.

Your love never fails, It never gives up, Never runs out on me. X2

Your love never fails, It never gives up, Never runs out on me. Your love...

In death, in life, I'm confident and Cover'd by the power of Your great love. My debt is paid; there's nothing that Can separate my heart from Your great love.

Your love never fails, It never gives up, Never runs out on me. X2

On and on and on and on it goes. It overwhelms and satisfies my soul. And I never ever have to be afraid. One thing remains.

Your love never fails, It never gives up, Never runs out on me. X2

PRAYER OF THE DAY

+ WE LISTEN TO GOD'S WORD +

OLD TESTAMENT READING GENESIS 3:1–6 Adam and Eve desire to be like God.

1Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” 4But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.

A This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

NEW TESTAMENT READING ROMANS 5:6–15 One man makes right for all people.

6For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though

Page 5: Comments, Prayer Requests, Contact Me · 14/6/2020  · good and evil.” 6So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the

3

perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. 12Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— 13for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. 14Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. 15But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many.

A This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL READING MATTHEW 9:35—10:8 Jesus sends out the disciples.

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the ninth chapter.

C Glory to You, O Lord.

35Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. 36When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” 1And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction. 2The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. 5These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of the Samaritans, 6but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ 8Heal the sick, raise

C Praise to You, O Christ.

CHILDREN'S MESSAGE – KRISTI BAUER Kids, please stay in your seats.

We believe children are the church and that God’s Word can and should be spoken in a way that they understand. Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me. Don’t stop them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these” (Matthew 19:14).

SONG OF THE DAY 10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord) Chorus Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul;

Worship His holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul; I’ll worship Your holy name.

The sun comes up, it’s a new day dawning, It’s time to sing Your song again. Whatever may pass, and whatever lies before me, Let me be singing when the evening comes.

Chorus

You’re rich in love and You’re slow to anger. Your name is great and Your heart is kind. For all your goodness, I will keep on singing; Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find.

Chorus

And on that day, when my strength is failing, The end draws near, and my time has come; Still, my soul will sing Your praise unending Ten thousand years, and then forevermore!

SERMON GENESIS-THE FALL Genesis 3:1-6 A space to take notes is provided on the inside cover.

+ WE RESPOND TO GOD'S WORD +

CONFESSING OUR FAITH APOSTLES’ CREED C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

RECEIVING THE OFFERING But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. (1 Tim. 6:6-8)

The giving of gifts in worship is a long-standing practice of God's people to give thanks to God for His many and daily blessings and to provide for the expansion of His mission on earth. • In the sanctuary, plates have been placed at the entrance and exit

to gather our offering without contact. • Children's offering can be placed in the baskets on the lower

stand. • Send a text to 651-401-7200 by simply typing “give” followed by a

dollar amount. eg: “give $50” • hopeofhastings.com/donate • Mail a check to the church.

PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer. (Psalm 4:1 NIV)

After each portion of the prayers the pastor will say, “Lord, in your mercy,” and the people will respond, “Hear our prayer.”
