The major goals of this project are:1. To determine if subclinical alterations in cellular respiration develop during propofol-based total intravenous anesthesia in children, as evidenced by a rise in fatty acid intermediaries (C3, C44 and C5 acylcarnitine) in blood and analysis of respiratory chain enzymes and intermediaries in skeletal muscle.2. To determine if lactate levels and the lactate-pyruvate ratio are useful measurements for early detection of such changes.3. To determine the biochemical and bioenergetic nature of propofol infusion syndrome.4. To determine if specific genetic polymorphisms play a role in the risk of propofol infusion syndrome.

Title: Altitude-omics 2012Role: co- investigator; expedition physicianThe major goals of this project are:1. To determine the nature of specific gene expression that

correlates with performance and adaptation to very high altitude

2. To study the integrative physiology of human adaptation to hypobaric hypoxia at extremely high altitude

3. To serve as an expedition physician and monitor the health of expedition participants and provide care as needed.

4. Field studies were performed at an altitude of 5300m (17,300ft) on Mt. Chacaltaya, Bolivia during July-August 2012 on 24 volunteers from sea level.
