Knowing your teammates, their tendencies, and the way they think is another weapon in any athlete’s arsenal. Over my high school career, I learned early on that an individual could not carry the entire team on their back as they once did at a younger age. In order to achieve results players must be willing to work hard on and off the field and must learn to trust the players around them. Gaining that trust can only be achieved by working together consistently through practices and any other workouts where every player must work to achieve their best. Another thing I learned now that I have finished playing is to not take anything for granted. Coach gives more than enough opportunities to better oneself and he can only do so much. The rest is on you, the player, to get in to the weight room, get a kick-around going, attend pick-ups, and friendly’s. That is the best way to achieve your best and build team chemistry and win or lose; as long as you know you have done your best, you will not regret a thing. The furthest the CV boys’ soccer team has ever gone is the second round in districts and we can’t seem to get past that point. We have won section 5 times in a row and have become a force to be reckoned with in the LL- League. Keep the tradition alive, work hard, and try to be the best team to go through the program. Trust me, the time flies and you’re going to wish that you could go back to “those times” with the boys making jokes in the shed, celebrating wins, getting through losses and of course, Sheetz’s craziness. In an attempt to keep the lines of communication open with all the boys involved in soccer, the coaching staff have put together a newsletter to highlight some of the opportunities open to the boys in the near future and a few short articles that give insight to the coaching staff’s philosophy and team mission. Summer Takes on a New Schedule

With the inception of Advance Physical Education the members of the soccer team have revamped the schedule for the summer. Their desire to stick to 3 workouts a week did not leave room for a summer league. So open play on Tuesday evenings will start on May 10th and run until preseas0n. Pickups will be held on the turf from 7-9pm. This is a chance for players to challenge themselves against their teammates, alumni, friends, family members, and or anyone who is willing to come out and play. Another change for the summer is eliminating the second week of camp. Traditionally BEST camp was 2 weeks prior to preseason. Now the boys have set up the schedule so

that they will start lifting at 8:45am then head to the pitch to get some work with the ball. Mondays and Wednesdays will be set aside for

themed training for soccer that has been designed by Coach Hartlaub and Trey Orner. Fridays after lifting the boys will play a different game such as touckball, engleball, two hand touch football, basketball, etc. We are very excited about the summer plans and hope that the boys make it a priority to train with one another to continue to grow into the best team they can be. As stated on the previous page communication is key and family comes first. All sessions are optional but the players want to hold each other accountable so they will be following

up to make sure no one is just not getting out of BED!!

Bucknell Team Camp

When: - July 10 – July 13 – Bus will take players from High School to Bucknell. 9:30am Sunday. Bus will return players on Wednesday evening.

Where: http://www.bisonsoccercamps.com/location.html

Who: CV Boys soccer players entering 10th, 11th & 12th grade

Why: CV Boys soccer has been using Bucknell University Team camp for a number of years. The distance is perfect in that the boys are far enough away to feel independent but not too far. The team will be coached by a college level coach. The entire staff is college coaches which allows the boys to showcase their skill set to potential schools. The format of the camp includes at least 2 matches per day. Loads of playing!! A number of CV players have been recruited as a direct result of attending this camp. Most importantly team bonding. It gives participates a chance to grow closer to their teammates. You get know a side of someone once you have lived with them for a few days!!

What – to bring - http://www.bisonsoccercamps.com/what-to-bring.html

Registration http://www.bisonsoccercamps.com/register.html (link to online registration or hard copy/ snail mail)

Cost - $475 is the cost unless returning which makes it $450. A $100 deposit will hold a players spot and the balance can be paid the first night of camp. Please register by May 15 to make sure we have enough players to hold the spot!!

RED CARD CANCER

Once again the boys and girls soccer teams will

participate in a Red Card Cancer series with

Manheim Township. We will battle on the field

through the game of soccer as well as a battle in

effort to raise, money and awareness for curing

cancer. Coach Hartlaub can accept sponsors at

any time. For $100 you can put a logo or text on

the back of our RCC awareness shirt. Over the

past 3 seasons our games have been one of the

most successful events for Red Card Cancer and

they see us a model to expand their efforts. Let’s

keep it going!!! Thanks to NEW YORK LIFE and

Greg Bair we already have sizeable contribution to

kick off the 2016 campaign.

Team Building Activity- In an effort to bring closeness between the players, there is a possibility of the boys doing a team building activity during preseason. One idea is to take an overnight trip to a campground and go paintballing the next day, halfway through the pre-season in August. The boys have done things in the past like high rope courses, trips to work on a farm, or camping trips thanks to the booster club.

Bundes Liga During the winter months when it is difficult to get

outside, motivation may be low for exercise, but our Bundes Liga is a

hit with the boys of the CV soccer program. For over 8 years we have

been crowning a champion of the futsal league in Witmer and this year

the team Obi Wan emerge from the Star Wars theme. Obi Wan lead by

Matteo Adiletta had a regular season record of 10-4 scoring a league

high 93 goals. Team Yoda which comprised of our seniors conceded

the least goals in 41. As reminder how the league works a number of

juniors are asked to become team captains/ managers and draft a

group of players from grades 8 through 11. Once a player becomes a

senior they will play with their fellow classmates on their own team to

hopeful create a strong squad that challenges the others but who

cannot compete in the playoffs for the coveted title. Generally we

announce our team champions and other awards at the May Family

Fun night but this season we have done things a little different. The

following individual players are to be recognized for their efforts this

winter:

Team Champion Obi-Wan

DUTCH DODGEBALL

The boys’ soccer program winter would not be complete without its annual Dodgeball tournament. Created in 2005 to raise funds for the 2006 team to go overseas to England this fundraiser has only improved with time. This year competing in 6 categories we had 45 teams. From noon until almost 7pm balls were flying throughout the gyms at Conestoga Valley. Our students really get into the spirit of the tournament through their enthusiasm and team apparel. We thank all those soccer families who were involved in the tournament and help us to raise $5744.82. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year. The money generated allows

the booster club to provide the program with many many extras throughout the year. Another awesome benefit of the Dutch Dodgeball tournament is 10% of our earnings go directly to Great Strides a foundation to help cure Cystic Fibrosis. This research has a direct connection tour soccer program since Coach Scheetz’s son has CF. $680 has been donated to this cause this year. If you wish to support Team Owen just go to

http://fightcf.cff.org/goto/ToddScheetz and or

join the Sheetz family on May 21st on the annual Great Strides Walk.

Sports Specialization

By: James Stratton ’05

At the early age of five, I began my career as a soccer player. As each year of my youth career passed, I grew more and more committed to the game. I started playing indoor soccer through winter, instead of basketball or taking the winter off. Spring baseball was overrun by the spring season of travel soccer. My summers turned into trips to various tournaments and summer leagues. As I reached my teenage years, I took the next step in my soccer career and joined a premier club team. Again my commitment to the game grew. My weeks were filled with multiple practices. If the team wasn’t traveling up or down the east coast on weekends, we would have a practice on Saturday and Sunday. To better prepare myself for games, I lifted on days I didn’t have practice. In high school, I was my busiest with soccer. My fall consisted of soccer every day after school, and a few games on Saturdays. Spring held a tournament literally every weekend. With college approaching, my club team traveled to as many showcase tournaments as possible. Our coaches tried to market the team to the numerous college coaches that attended the tourneys. My whole high school career I was focused on the game of soccer. I never once considered my parent’s, coaches, and friend’s suggestions to mix it up and try another sport. I was convinced in my head that staying committed to soccer was the only way to reach the collegiate level. My thoughts proved correct in one way, as I am now a member of Penn State Altoona’s soccer team. What I did not realize until the spring of my senior year was what I missed all through high school.

This past spring I gave in to suggestions from various people to go out for experience made me regret not running throughout high school. My season began in December, when I ran winter track. The training was extremely strenuous. I struggled in the beginning to stay with the team as we ran up to ten miles at practice, followed by calisthenics. I worked hard all winter and made it to the spring season. My first track meet filled me with a burning desire to run again. I loved the style of competition. Instead of having a team to assist me, the weight falls solely on my shoulders. In my head, there was no way I was going to allow the guy next to me to cross the finish in first. As the season continued, our team fought for a third straight section title. I became a key leader in the team. Each meet the team relied on me finishing first in various events, earning crucial points for the team. My track season also gave me a priceless opportunity to run on a 3200-relay team, which has a chance to win states. The 3200-relay team, or the 4x800 guys also earned a trip to the Penn Relays Carnival. At Penn Relays we broke the school record a third time in one season, running a 7:51:98. My season this spring has made me strongly consider running in college in addition to playing soccer.

Through track, I instilled a newer and stronger confidence in myself as an athlete. I believe I am in the best shape of my life. I also think track has helped prepare me for college soccer. I am now a stronger runner and much faster, both crucial in soccer. Without a doubt, I would suggest that any serious athlete play more than just one sport. An athlete will develop more skill and talent through competing in various sports, rather than specializing in one. The competition, training, and companionship one experiences through various sports are unmatched in preparation for athletic contests and school and work as well.
