PEDAGOGIC INTERESTS
I am interested in teaching and learning styles, particularly Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic (VAK). Some might suggest these to be dated concepts but when writing my book ‘Reflexive Practice: dialectic encounter in psychology & education’, I discussed the synergy between VAK learning style and the corresponding brain modalities/sensory receptors. In addition, interest in meta-cognition led me to write on the phenomenon of reflexive practice and it’s ubiquity within practice based occupations such as teaching and research. A further interest is the neuropsychology of cognition and social cognition - its relationship to language development and atypical development.

To whom it may concern,
Reference for Angela Lisle
Angela Lisle was employed at the University as a Senior Lecturer in Early Childhood Studies from September 2003 until her resignation in June 2007. During this time Angela had a good sickness record and was always punctual in her attendance. She was a hard-working member of staff who gave freely of her time for meetings, staff development and a range of additional duties including student recruitment events taking place at weekends. In her specialist field of Early Childhood Education, Angela is well qualified for work in Higher Education and the public sector more generally. She always showed a strong concern for academic standards and intellectual challenge in her lecture preparation, teaching and assessment of students. Angela is confident in her ability to take responsibility and was keen to provide a lead for others at the University. For example she put herself forward as a Teaching Fellow in 2005-6 and was given a short-term time allocation of approximately one day per week to promote good practice in the implementation of a Professional Development Planning/Skills Framework. Throughout her time at the University Angela demonstrated a commitment to maintaining her engagement with professional and academic developments in her field. She regularly attended regional and national events and conferences, presenting papers herself on some occasions. She has also continued to develop her research and publishing record. Her colleagues at the University wish her well in the next phase of her career. Yours sincerely

Re: ANGELA LISLE
Angela Lisle was appointed to the Open University as Associate Lecturer commencing responsibilities in February 2008. The role involves facilitating students’ distance learning through face-to-face tutorials, telephone and email tuition and through assignment feedback. Open University materials are provided for all students and tutors so that in contrast with traditional H.E. establishments the tutor facilitates students’ learning by helping them make use of these materials.
Over the past three months Angela has impressed me with her confidence in her abilities to teach, research, write and manage. She has developed a wide range of resources which she has generously provided for the students. These materials will be very useful in a more traditional H.E. environment. Angela is adjusting to the different approach used within the Open University.
Similarly Angela is adapting to OU feedback style and her commentary is developing in both quantity and quality. As distance learners the OU students are heavily dependent upon feedback. Angela is encouraging towards students and provides useful suggestions for their further improvement. Angela regularly attends Staff Development events to keep abreast of OU methods and developments. In addition to general OU induction, Angela has attended events on the Virtual Learning environment. Plagiarism and on electronic methods of feedback.
The OU courses for which Angela is employed are a second level course in Childhood studies and a third level course on Research in Child Development. The second level course is an interdisciplinary course which views childhood from psychological, sociological and historical perspectives. There is a strong emphasis upon a cross-cultural view of childhood. This would seem to fit with the proposed course at University in multi-disciplinary Childhood Studies although the OU course is not specifically focussed upon early childhood. The third level course on Research in Child development aims to develop in students an understanding of the research process and this would seem to be relevant to the University emphasis upon research.
OU Associate Lecturers do not have to be formally present at a specific time except for their tutorial duties. These average at about 14 hours per course through the academic year. Thus Angela has provided the early tutorial support in her two courses. Other support is provided in the aforementioned ways and day school provision with formal lectures.
Angela is not working full-time for the OU therefore her salary is not comparable with a full-time salary provided in an H.E. full-time post. She is currently working on her doctorate and the completion of her book so that part-time work with the Open University has been a useful source of employment during this period.
