Award winning DJ Mike Benda- vid brought his two-step- ping crowd to the valley’s oldest venue for live rock and roll, Paladino’s, located on Reseda Blvd, just north of the new busway in a little mini-mall. On any given night, you are likely to run into haircut bands in leather that might have stepped off the Sunset Strip, adult film stars hanging out at the bar and every sort of tribute band from an all female group paying homage to Led Zeppelin to the Van Halen tribute band Atomic Punks who also moonlight as Metal Shop. So I was kind of surprised to hear they were trying country on Sun- day nights. Now, if you haven’t been to Paladino’s in a while, they spruced the place up, put in a good sound system and you can get a Hollywood club expe- rience with a more laid back valley vibe and reasonably priced drinks. Mike Bendavid taught line dancing at the Cowboy Palace in Chatsworth for fifteen years and now teaches country dance at the Sherman Oaks Senior Center. He and his partner Diana Dover just taught Tim McGraw how to dance for the up- coming movie “Flicka” and the two were featured on the Entertainment TV Reali- ty show “Chelsea Handler.” On Sunday, after a BBQ in the parking lot and dance lessons, Lee Harper took the stage with a band of veteran players that included Chad Watson, who was the bassist for the Charlie Rich Band and now tours with Freddie Fender, playing guitar and also a mean trombone. Chad’s wife Pam Loe got onstage and sang a “Teenage Wedding” that did justice to Emmy Lou Harris, and Evan Marshall of the Evan Marshall Band got up and sang “Polk Sal- ad Annie.” Drummer Jim Salisbury told me it was only fitting country was back at Paladino’s, as the bar was called the Crest in the early ‘80’s and he played here in country bands on the weekend back then. I saw Lyle Mays, who plays key- boards for Pat Metheny, hanging by the pool tables, and I realized that Paladino’s is a place where country, jazz and rock musicians all feel comfortable.
