Type C3 and C3S UnitsOur Type C3 units can be used oneither primary or secondary clar-ification, while Type C3S units arenormally used only in secondaryactivated sludge treatment appli-cations. Both units are identicalexcept the Type C3S units havesludge withdrawal pipes to recycleactivated sludge to the aerationbasins.

Custom Clarifier TypesOur clarifiers are easily adaptableto special designs. In addition tostandard optional features, ourengineers will design and developnew features necessary to satisfyspecial application requirements.

This may necessitate conceptsnever before incorporated in aclarifier, or may combine featuresin a new configuration. Whateverthe special requirement of the in-stallation, we will provide a designto suit user needs.

DescriptionType C mechanisms are supportedby a center column which carriesthe full operating load of the clar-ifier. A stationary walkway extendsfrom the side of the basin to theplatform over the center columnfor access to the drive unit.

Influent can be introduced to thecenter feedwell through a pipeline

beneath the basin and up throughthe hollow center column, orsupported from underneath thewalkway.

Sludge removal rake arms withblades and squeegees are at-tached to a center cage supportedfrom the rotating main gear of thedrive.

Sludge withdrawal pipes providea controlled high-volume, contin-uous removal of activated sludgeto aeration basins. Sludge is col-lected just above the clarifier tankfloor. Optimum sludge return rateis easily controlled from the op-erating platform.

Most standard or special sedimen-tation/clarification requirementscan be accommodated by ourexperts. Mechanisms to achievedesired results can be easily adapt-ed from designs of specializedtreatments units at existing in-stallations. A custom clarifier canbe designed with elements drawnfrom existing clarifiers to suitcurrent unique applicationrequirements.

Experience gained through 50years of service, testing, research, and thousands of installations, enables us to design efficient andreliable mechanisms tailored toyour needs. An experienced ser-vice organization is available toprovide the support you require, including complete field and lab-oratory testing to assure propercomponent selection, and struc-tural and process calculations.

Options to various basic config-urations allow flexibility to matchmost treatment needs. Experienceand expertise in designing forunique requirements has equippedus with the knowledge to produceunits tailored to special situations.Laboratory testing and years ofempirical experience enable ourengineers to design the "one-of-a-kind" units often needed whenan unusual circumstance occurs. Some of the innovative clarifierdesigns we have produced overthe years are shown in this bro-chure. Basic configurations in-clude: square basins with specialcorner-sweep rake arms; specialsuction sludge return; special driveadaptation; and special skimmingdesigns.

Corner Sweep Clarifiers forSquare Basins

Types C3C and C3SC DescriptionReduced plant construction costsare often realized from economiesobtained by using square basins.Types C3C and C3SC clarifiersutilize the same drive unit andcomponent design as the basicType C3 clarifier, except they arefitted to a square basin. Either crossflow or center feed with peripheraloverflow can be employed.

To provide complete sludge re-moval from all parts of the basin, the sludge-raking arms have pivot-ed pantograph-action extensionsattached to their outer ends. Cor-rosion-resistant wheels mountedon the extension arms ride againststeel plates embedded in the side-walls and guide the outer scraperblades. Corrosion resistant torsionsprings in the pivoting extensionarms keep them in contact with thewall at all times. Counter-weights,cables, sheaves and other me-chanical devices which wouldrequire periodic maintenance areeliminated

Flocculator Clarifiers...ForImproved Settling

Types C3F and C3SF DescriptionBy oversizing the feedwell andadding flocculators, influent canbe gently agitated to promoteflocculation and more efficientsettling. Feedwells are sized toprovide influent detention for en-hancing the formation of the floc-culated particles. Flocculatingclarifier feedwells are generallydesigned for the maximum depthallowed by the rotating mecha-nisms and are supported fromeither the walking platform or cen-ter cage. Variable speed flocculatordrives permit adjustment to optimizeoperation over the range of ex-pected influent volume.

Type CF DescriptionStacked concentric dual drivesallow vertical flocculating paddlesto counter-rotate in the feedwell, resulting in thorough but gentlemixing of feed stream. The slowspeed clockwise-moving paddlesattached to the rake arms passbetween the counter-clockwise-rotating turbine paddles to createmixing eddys in the flocculationwell to promote complete energydistribution without high localizedshear. These units are particularlywell suited for bio-flocculationand for light to medium strengthfloc. Bridge-supported, dual-driveflocculating clarifiers and diffusedair flocculating clarifiers are alsoavailable.

Types C3LF and C3SLF DescriptionRemoval of suspended solids canbe improved by as much as 20%with the addition of a large diam-eter feedwell to the basic clarifier.Short-circuiting in the basin isreduced and volumetric efficiencyimproved by increasing the diam-eter of the feedwell to half thediameter of the basin.

After pioneering the use of largediameter feedwells, we now haveextensive experience in their ap-plication. Feedwells are generallysupported from the basin wall.Radial launders are often employedto decrease the weir overflow rate.

Flow enters the feedwell at acontrolled low velocity, providingeffective dissipation of the influentenergy and greatly reducing surf

ace turbulence. Scum removalis performed within the feedwellusing an efficient skimming device.

DescriptionFloating solids can be removedby either of two skimming mech-anisms; adaptable to the basicclarifiers. The first design consistsof a rotating collector mechanismwhich moves floating scum intoa fixed box mounted at the tankwall.

The second skimming design con-sists of a radically fixed scum pipewith a scum receiver opening thelength of the pipe. By rotating thepipe with either a manual or au-tomatic operator, the opening isdropped below the surface of theliquid. A skimmer blade attachedto the rotating collector mecha-nism moves the floating scum tothis stationary pipe where the scumis drawn into the opening. Whenthe skimmer blade contacts thepipe, it “ducks” below the surfaceof the liquid and returns to its toits upright position after travelingunder the pipe. Scum from thefeedwell to the tank wall is there-fore removed with each revolution(or operator selected/ programmedrevolutions) of the rotating col-lector mechanism.

DescriptionIn many wastewater treatmentplants it is desirable to provideboth clarification and sludgethickening. There is no questionas to the advantages of sludgethickening prior to digestion, filtra-tion, incineration, or other methodsof sludge disposal. But the costsassociated with installing twoseparate units, and the additional

space required, tend to offset theadvantages and pose a questionas to whether both should be in-cluded in a flowsheet.

Our ClariThickener™ clarifier-sludgethickeners provide an economicalsolution to this dilemma. Althoughslightly higher in initial cost thaneither a clarifier or a sludge thick-ener, the ClariThickener is MUCHless expensive to install and op-erate than the two separate units. The efficient single-basin designcosts about 25% to 40% less toinstall, requires less labor andpower to operate, and takes onlyabout half the space of the twoseparate units.

BenefitsOur ClariThickeners Clarifier versusConventional Clarifier andSludge Thickener• Consumes less space• Lowers installation cost• Lowers operating costs• Creates simplified flow pattern• Requires less operating labor• Prevents septic conditions and

odors

Operating PrincipleWastewater enters the ClariThick-ener center feedwell as in a con-ventional clarifier. Settleable solidsare deposited directly in the sludgethickening well and outer tankbottom. An oxidative liquor inletdiffuser, mounted on the centercolumn just above the thickeningzone, provides septicity control.

Thixo posts in the sludge thick-ening well gently stir the sludgeto facilitate release and upflowof gases and liquids. The volumeof the sludge thickening well isadequate to hold settled sludgefrom 12 to 24 hours, dependingon process requirements. Duringthis sludge retention period, theoxidative liquor diffuser maintains

semi-aerobic conditions over thethickening well. Clarified effluent, floating solids, and scum are re-moved from the surface by con-ventional methods.

We have over 60 years' experiencein gear design and manufacture, combining municipal technologywith heavy-duty industrial per-formance requirements. Knowl-edge gained from thousands ofminerals processing and otherhigh-demand applications enableus to produce reliable and eco-nomical driveheads for superiorperformance in water and waste-water treatment applications.

Information on file in our technol-ogy center from this experienceand extensive laboratory analysis, enables us to size drives for eachspecific set of process require-ments. Drives are designed forlong, trouble-free life, dependableservice, and economical operation.

Drive Type SpecificationsWe build superior drives. Whenspecifying a drive, it should berecognized that the critical re-quirement is NOT the internalconfiguration but the STRENGTHof WEAR RATINGS of the drive. The engineers' specification shouldrequire detailed drive calculations(AGMA standards) and field torquetests. Drive specifications shouldbe confirmed by submittal calcu-lations and by field torque com-pliance tests under supervisionof the consulting engineer to verifythe structural integrity of themechanism.

We have built thousands of sed-imentation drives for over 60 yearsin a variety of types, sizes, andstyles. Many improvements havebeen made on our drives over thisperiod of time. Our drives oftenexceed other suppliers' rating forsimilar sized units. It cannot beoveremphasized that strength and

wear rating, with an appropriateservice life (years or cycles), bespecified rather than componentdimensions and internal materi-als of construction. Superior ourdrives, incorporating advancedtechnology, will probably exceedtorque and other performancecriteria in a smaller configurationthan might be available in largercompeting drives. Our experiencein drive design assures that thespecified torque rating and qual-ity will be equal to the task to beperformed

Drive Features• Optimum output torque range
