Foundation: Applicants with overall IELTS band 5.0 (with no individual band below 4.5) are required to take the Pre-University English concurrently with the Foundation programme.

Undergraduate: Applicants with overall IELTS band 5.5 or 6 (with no individual band below 5.0) are required to take Curtin University Fast Track Units in English.

Postgraduate: Applicants may be deemed to meet Curtin's English language requirements based on the completion of a bachelor degree course in which English is the sole language of instruction. This will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Foundation: Applicants with TOEFL scores between 61 and 70 are required to take the Pre-University English concurrently with the Foundation programme.

Undergraduate: Applicants with TOEFL scores between 71 and 78 are required to take Curtin University Fast Track Units in English.

Postgraduate: Applicants may be deemed to meet Curtin's English language requirements based on the completion of a bachelor degree course in which English is the sole language of instruction. This will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Foundation: Applicants with SPM English grade 'C' are required to take the Pre-University English concurrently with the Foundation programme.

Living Expenses

Living and studying in Miri can be a

rewarding, exciting and challenging

experience. Almost everything you will

need is available at affordable prices. We

suggest you plan your living

requirements so that you can make the

most of your experience.

Your living expenses will depend largely

on your tastes, interests and financial

position.

You should plan a budget according to

your needs, but make sure it is flexible

enough to allow for changes.

If you plan to buy a car, make sure you

consider additional expenses such as

petrol, insurance, road tax, driver’s licence

and maintenance costs. Rental cars are

available for long-term hire, but the cost

could be substantial.

Budget

While studying at Curtin Sarawak, you

may need to purchase items such as text

books and stationery, so you should plan

ahead to cover these costs. The cost of

books can vary considerably, depending

on the course and units chosen.

You should also budget for items such as

photocopying, course-related incidental

costs and protective clothing. To get the best start from your stay in

Miri, we recommend you consult the

International Office on the estimated

amount of funds you will need to get by in

the initial weeks.

Health and insurance

International students must purchase

Hospital & Surgical, Outpatient Clinical,

Personal Accident and Disability and

Term Life insurance subject to yearly

renewal. This scheme is compulsory for

all full-time students aged between 17

and 40.

Tenancy period

Tenancy periods per semester or term are

as follows:

IEP - 3 months

Undergraduate & Foundation -

4-5 months

A processing fee of RM20 must be paid in

order for booking to be processed.

Students are also required to pay a

refundable deposit equivalent to two

months' rental, as well as one semester's

rent in advance, within a period of 14

days after confirmation of booking. Rent

paid will be forfeited if students fail to

stay the entire duration of the semester

or term.

Accommodation booking

The University accepts only online

accommodation booking. Online booking

can be made on the Housing Services

website under ‘Department of University

Life’.

The Housing Office can help students find

suitable accommodation such as:

The following information is relevant to students applying directly to the University. Students who use the services of Curtin Sarawak registered agents should lodge their applications via the agents and contact them for any queries throughout the admission process.

1. Complete the printed Application Form in the preceding pages or the online Application Form at http://www.curtin.edu.my/

2. Printed Application Forms must be accompanied by certified copies of relevant documents.

3. Successful applicants will receive an Offer Pack which will include a Letter of Offer, Acceptance of Offer Form, Enrolment Form and Student Pass Application Pack. To accept the offer, complete and sign all the forms and return them with payment of all fees to Curtin Sarawak by the due date stated in the offer letter in

order for the student pass and visa application to be processed.

4. The Student Pass Application pack includes (international students only): Student Pass Application

Policy and Procedures

Before leaving home

1. It is advisable to book an air ticket immediately after accepting the offer as airline seats are in high demand before the start of each semester.

2. Wherever possible, arrange your itinerary to transit at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), which is the main entry point to Malaysia, then travel to Miri within the same day.

5. The student pass application process would usually take ONE month. Upon approval, a Visa Approval Letter (VAL) from the Sarawak State Immigration Department will be forwarded to you via courier.

You are then required to present the following documents to the Malaysian Embassy for 'Single Entry Visa' endorsement: Passport Letter of Offer Visa Approval Letter (VAL)

from Sarawak State Immigration Department

3. Make arrangements for accommodation. To book campus accommodation, log on to http://www.curtin.edu.my/future/currentresidents.htm

4. To request the Airport Reception Service on arrival, you will need to complete the Airport Reception Service (ARS) Booking Form which is available at http://www.curtin.edu.my/international/international_office/ARSForm.php.

ARS requests must be submitted 3 working days in advance.

5. To ensure smooth immigration clearance at KLIA and Miri Airport, you will need to produce your passport, Letter of Offer from Curtin Sarawak, and Visa Approval Letter (VAL) from the Sarawak State Immigration Department, at the airport immigration counters.

On arrival in Miri

1. If you have requested the Airport Reception Service, you will be met at Miri Airport and transported to your campus accommodation or short-term accommodation.

2. You are required to report to the Curtin Sarawak International Office during office hours, and will be assisted to open a bank

account and make an appointment for medical check-up.

3. The University conducts an orientation programme to assist students to settle in Miri and into the University environment. The programme includes information on enrolment procedures, study

skills, campus facilities, support services, public transport, shopping and recreational activities. The programme is supported by specialist staff members, student associations and senior students. All new students are required to attend.
