Teaching Tools & Technology and Contributions to its Development
Use of Teaching Tools & Technology
A combination of the educational technology tools along with personal contact and support is
optimal for pedagogy. I had the opportunity since 2003 to use the available teaching tools and
technology resources available at Leicester University, UK. For instance, I was teaching via
7 O
the Smart Classrooms, Computer labs, Web CT, Blackboard since these educational products
were introduced at the university. A distinguishing factor of the communication science lies in
its strong relation with the revolution of the communication and educational
technologies. The online course materials are especially suited to the communication and
public relations students. My students are required to locate and upload information
electronically and share ideas with other colleagues in the classrooms. The results of these
tools are:
a) High-level of competence,
b) High level of computer skills,
c) High level of self – directed student centered learning,
d) An inter-active learning environment,
e) Ability to retrieve and share information with others, and
f) More exposure to the global dimensions.
The following are some of my teaching tools:
1. Slides, overheads, video films, power Point, Smart Class Rooms, CD ROMs, Internet
resources, and WebCT among others.
Development of Teaching Tools & Technology
The following are some of the techniques I’m using to develop the
teaching tools:
Providing Supplementary Links:
I have used both WebCT and Blackboard programs to provide supplementary links to the
content of the courses. It is an easy online task; however, it is important to contextualize the
links. I also target the links to specific topics or assignments, and give some indication of what
the linked page contains, and to specify whether visiting the link is required or recommended
for enrichment.
Using On-line Databases:
Using the Web as a Research Tool for Critical Essays:
Besides being able to locate web sources and evaluate the quality and accuracy of their
information, I provide my students with a number of sites to help them learn how to cite web
sources and how to integrate them effectively with print sources.
