Curriculum Enrichment Week 9th - 13th July 2018

Welcome to ‘The Journey of a Lifetime’

Dear Parent/Carer, One of the excellent features of Coombe Dean is the variety of opportunities that students are given during the annual Curriculum Enrichment Week. This gives students in Years 7 – 9 the opportunity to embark on a journey. This may be a journey to explore new places or a journey that explores hidden talents and skills. Above all, it is a chance to learn about themselves. A journey of self-discovery. This is an exciting week where the curriculum is enriched by providing students with activities that cannot normally take place in an average day. Please read through this booklet to learn more about the exciting opportunities on offer. You can also visit the school web site and read the brochure on line, in glorious colour! The cost of each activity is shown and we are legally required to cover these by voluntary contributions. However, if you decide not to contribute we may not be able to run the activity since we have no alternative sources of funding. Please note that deposits are non-refundable, so make sure your son/daughter selects his/her activity carefully. Deposits will also guarantee your son/daughter’s place on their allocated activity. Just before you get to the booking form you will find some handy hints and tips and I would be grateful if you could read these before your son/daughter makes his/her final choice. Do not hesitate to contact me, or the member of staff who is organising the activity if you need further information.

L Sutherland Assistant Headteacher

Please note:

Curriculum Enrichment Week is an integral part of your son’s/daughter’s educational experience at school. It is a special week offering huge opportunities to extend their curriculum experience and all students will be expected to participate in an activity during the week.

Fancy learning to snowboard? It is certainly one of the coolest sports to try! Although we can't promise instant coolness, what we do hope, is that when you try snowboarding, you'll find it easy to pick up, fun to progress and something that you’ll continue to enjoy – with a little ‘falling with style’ along the way to ultimate coolness! Over the 5 days you will learn a variety of snowboarding techniques. By the end of the week you’ll be amazed at how far you’ve advanced your skills – and you’ll have a skills card to prove it! Each day you will have two long snowboarding sessions giving you between 3 and 4 hours daily practice. Alongside a welcome break for lunch you’ll also get to experience either toboganning or snowtubing each day. No special equipment is needed – just wear a long sleeved top and trousers, and a pair of gloves (any type with fingers). Please note this activity is for beginners or those with very limited experience only.

The price includes:

5 days tuition for snowboarding

Sessions of snowtubing and toboganning

Daily return transport to ski slope from Coombe Dean

Come and spend a week on some of the world’s most beautiful beaches as we enjoy great fun and games in the Isles of Scilly. Leaving very early on the morning of Sunday 8th July and returning late on the evening of Thursday 12th July we will ensure five full days of activity. Transport will be by coach from school to Penzance and then on the Scillonian ferry. Our campsite is on the shores of the beautiful remote Pelistry Beach on St Mary’s Island. The campsite is comfortable and fully serviced. We will cater well for ourselves, hopefully enjoying some of our own freshly caught seafood. Our plan for the week involves us abandoning the clocks—we wake when it is light and sleep when it is dark. Within minutes of arrival you will relax into the magical spirit of the Scilly Isles. We will have one day taking part in a selection of watersports in the crystal clear waters. This will include windsurfing, paddle boarding, sailing and kayaking. A ‘sea safari’ will include seal and puffin watching and travelling to uninhabited islands. Another day we will travel with the local boatmen ‘off island’, probably visiting either Tresco or St Agnes. Much time will be spent exploring the islands and the beaches; catching crabs; fishing from the shore and boats; chasing and cheering on the Gig crews as they hold their weekly evening race between islands and enjoying local crafts and customs. This is not a week for those who wish to tune into the internet but it is for the adventurous sun, sea and ‘diamond’ sand lovers amongst you!

Whether you are a keen surfer or an absolute beginner, Surf’s Up will provide you with a fun-packed week in the ocean. We are blessed in the south west to have some of the country’s finest surfing beaches; two of which you will visit during the week to improve and enhance your surfing skills. To begin the week, we will travel to Bantham, where Bantham Surf Academy will take us through the basics of surfing and then push each surfer on to improve their technique. Later in the week, we will travel to Harlyn in Cornwall, where the Harlyn Surf School will help you tackle a different beach with different waves. This will include an overnight stay (weather permitting) near Harlyn (camping at Old McDonald’s Farm Campsite). We will surf again on Friday morning … after a hearty breakfast of course. The cost of the trip includes fully trained instructors, all equipment including wet suits, travel, camping costs, lunch/tea on Thursday and breakfast/lunch on Friday.

Surfing is a fantastic sport and one where practice really does make perfect. You’ll be amazed how good you can get in a week.

The adventure begins at Plymouth on board a classic wooden ship. We sail to either the Channel Islands, France, the Isles of Scilly or any number of other destinations along the Western Channel (Weather and tides dependent. Passport required)

All sailors are taught to run the ship. Throughout the week they will; hoist and lower the sails, helm (steer) the ship, cook, scrub the decks and clean below decks, lower and raise the anchor, and help make the decisions about destinations. Whilst ashore, all sailors can visit the local towns, villages, beaches, shops, cafes and local attractions.

Whilst at sea you can; fish, read and play games … and whilst at anchorage, water fights and jumping off the ship are a great way to appreciate the fun of a ‘life-at-sea’.

This will say which activity you have been allocated, the cost, and when you should pay the instalments. Please note your place will not be confirmed until the deposit has been paid. What happens if the activity I want to do is full? On the booking form you will be asked to name four choices. Mrs McDowall will do her best to get you into the activity that you have named as your first choice but, as we have to put a limit on the number of places in each activity, this cannot be guaranteed. All activities will have a reserve list of about 5 names. You may be added to the reserve list and it may be possible to offer you a place later on. Do I have to bring in any money with my booking form? No. Please do attempt to pay any money until you definitely know that you have a place. You will be told your allocated activity soon after the 3rd November and you will be asked to pay the deposit by December 1st. If there is a problem with payment please email [email protected] to discuss options.

I’ve been allocated a place, how do I pay the deposit and make other payments? As you can see in the brochure, activities can be paid for in instalments. All payments should be made using ParentPay. This is an on-line payment facility which saves you from having to bring large sums of money to school. It also allows your parents / carers to pay on line and in instalments. If your parents have mislaid the letter containing their log in and password details, they need to phone Mrs Chapman on 01752 485459 as soon as possible and he will be able to provide these details again. The payment details can be found in the booklet. You may of course pay for your activity in advance, but if you want to pay in instalments, please adhere to the dates given. Some activities involve the school having to meet the deadlines set by the activity providers so your help in meeting the deadlines will ensure that we do not incur any extra charges for late payment. Text message reminders will be sent the week before. Please note that deposits cannot be refunded once we have booked places with activity providers. If your son/daughter sustains an injury before the week, preventing them taking part, we cannot guarantee a full refund. ALL BOOKING FORMS MUST BE RETURNED TO MRS McDOWALL BY FRIDAY 3rd NOVEMBER AT THE VERY LATEST. ONCE YOU HAVE HAD YOUR PLACE CONFIRMED, DEPOSITS WILL HAVE TO BE PAID BY 1st DECEMBER.

PLEASE NOTE THAT DEPOSITS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE.

What is the final date for payment? All activities must be paid for by 4th May 2018 I’m confused, who can I talk to? Come and see Mrs McDowall in the RCS corridor Learning Resources Centre office or Mrs Sutherland in the PE Office
