SUMMARY: Data on labor force activity for the week prior to the survey are supplied in this collection. Information is available on the employment status, occupation, and industry of persons 14 years old and over. Demographic variables such as age, sex, race, marital status, veteran status, household relationship, educational background, and Spanish origin are included. In addition to providing these core data, the October CPS survey also contains a special supplement on school enrollment. This supplement includes the following items: current grade attending at public or private school, whether attending college full- or part-time at a two- or four-year institution, year Last attended a regular school , and year graduated from high school. CLASS IV
UNIVERSE: All persons in the noninstitutional population of the United States. SAMPLING: Monthly probability sample based on a stratified sampling scheme. The sample consists of approximately 71,000 households.

TYPE OF FILE:
Microdata; unit of observation is individuals within housing units.
UNITTERSE DESCRIPTION:
The universe consists of all persons three years old and over who are in the civilian noninstitutional population of the United States living in sampled housing units. Persons age 14 years old and over have an adult record; children age 3 to 13 have a child record. A probability sample is used to select housing units.
SUBJECT-MATTER DESCRIPTION:
Data are provided on labor force activity for the week prior to the survey. Comprehensive data are available on the employment status, occupation, and industry of persons 14 years old and over. Also shown are personal characteristics such as ageI sex, race, marital status, veteran status, household relationship, educational background, and Spanish origin. Educational data for persons age three years and over include current school enrollment, type of school in which enrolled, amount of tuition, and grade attending. Items for secondary school students identify type of educational program being pursued, and plans to enroll at two- and four-year colleges, or postsecondary education other than college. Information from college level students indicate type of degree being sought.
GEOGRAPHIC COVERAGE:
Individual States and 44 SMSA's are identified and ranked by population size (1970). Central city/noncentral city
- indicators are provided for the larger SMSA's.
