festival. Now a days people of Lahore enjoyit by kite flying competition and byvisiting the shrine of saint M adho LalHussein, where they assemble to paytheir benediction .

ELA CHARAGHAN:M ela Charaghan or lamp festival is held annually

in the last week of M arch near Shalamar Garden.At dusk lamps are lighted outside the gardens

while the inner side is lighted with electric Lamps.People in specific dresses and the playing

fountains in the evening make the atmosphere very pleasing.On the day of festival the Shalamar garden is

opened till late in the evening .

HORSE AND CATTLE SHOW:It is held in Lahore Fortress stadium at theend of February or at First week of M arch.People come to watch :

Parade of animals.Dance by horses and camels.Polo matches.Tent pegging.Dog shows and their races.M ass display of military band. ANDInteresting acts of stuntmen .

Defence day is celebrated very vigorouslyin Lahore.An exhibition is held in Fortress stadiumLahore.Pakistan army organizes this exhibition inwhich articles related to armed forces areshown.

CITY OF GATES:There are 13 gates of Lahore.We categorize them in 4 groups:

I. Northern gates.II. Eastern gates.III. Southern gates.IV. Western gates.

NORTHERN GATES:

1) RAUSHNAI GATE:

It is between the royal mosqueand the citadels.

Being the principal entrance fromthe fort to the city, it was mostfrequented by the Omerahs,courtiers, royal servants, andretinues.

% s the quarters about here wereprofusely lighted up at night, itwas called the "gate of light" , or,"gate of splendour.

2) KASH

MIRI GATE:

It is called as kashmiri gate because itfaces the direction of kashmir.

3) M ASTI GATE:

The Masti Gate, the name isthe corruption of "Masjidi,"the pertaining to a mosque.

The mosque of MariamMakani, mother of Akbar, is in

its immediate vicinity. Henceits name.

4) KHIZRI GATE:

The gate was named Khizri, after thename of Khizr Elias, the patron saint,according to the Mohammedan belief

Ranjit Singh kept here two domesticatedlions in a cage, and the gate came to becalled "Sheranwala" or the " lions' gate".

People now call it by both names, the "

Khizri" and the "Sheranwalla" gateway.

EASTERN GATES

1) YAKKI GATE:

T he original name was "Zaki," thatbeing the name of a saint, who,according to tradition, fell fightingagainst the Mughal rulers from thenorth, while defending his city.

2 ) DELHI GATE:

The Delhi Gate, so calledfrom its opening on to thehigh road from Lahore to

Delhi.

ARI GATE:The Akbari Gate, named after

Mohammad Jalal-ud-din Akbar,who rebuilt the town.Close to this gate the Emperor

also founded a market, which,after his name, is called "AkbariMandi".

SOUTHERN GATES1) M OCHI GATE:

The Mochi Gate. The name isthe corruption of Moti, a pearl.

It was called so after the

name of Moti Ram, an officer of Akbar, who resided here at thattime.

2) SHAHAL

MI GATE:

The Shah 'Almi Gate, namedafter Mo'azzam Shah 'Alam (theson and successor of Aurangzeb),a mild and magnificent Emperor,

who died at Lahore on the 28thFebruary 1712.

3) LAHORI GATE:

The Lahori Gate, called also the Loharigate.

The gate was named after the city of Lahore.It is said that when Malik Ayaz rebuilt

the town, in the time of Mahmud, thequarter of the city first populated wasabout this gate, which, together with theLahori Mandi, or the Lahore market, wasnamed after the city.

The Bhaati Gate, named after theBhatis, an ancient Rajput tribe whoinhabited these quarters in old times.

The Taxali Gate, so called fromthe Taxal, or royal mint, havingbeen in its neighbourhood duringthe period of the MohammedanEmperors
