ART ♥ SCIENCE

Both artists and scientists thrive on research and experimentation. They push our intellectual boundaries. In the BAC Atelier both encounter each other. You too can apply for a free studio space in this multidisciplinary art lab of KU Leuven. And regularly we throw the doors wide open to the general public.

DEAR STUDENTYou have just arrived in Leuven or you have been studying here for some time. Whatever the case may be, you’re on the eve of a year of excitement. Not only will you learn a lot and continue to build your future, but you can also explore and expand your cultural horizons. Therefore, I offer you three tips, to put you on your way.

Enjoy your life in Leuven to the full. Bart Raymaekers Vice Rector for Culture, Art and Heritage KU Leuven

GET A CULTURE CARD

Culture can be – quite literally – priceless, and your budget is limited. Fortunately, for the past ten years, KU Leuven has offered its students a culture card. A culture card is a free ticket to every UUR KULTUUR, the unmissable cultural programme organized by your university. You’ll also enjoy sizable discounts from all the major cultural centres in Leuven.

PULL UP YOUR SLEEVES

Don’t just stand on the sidelines. Every week, hundreds of students rehearse with our university ensembles. During the InterFaculty Theatrefestival and with CampusToneel you get a chance to take the stage. Discover and grow your artistic skills, and don’t miss the kick-off meetings at the beginning of the academic year.

The Culture Office implements the university’s culture policy in cooperation with the vice rector. We stimulate both cultural participation and creation with a special attention for the link between art and science. The Culture Office is located at STUK arts centre.

MTC GROTE AULA

The Pavel Haas Quartet is in a league of its own. This string quartet is lauded around the world for its infectious performances.

These Czech musicians will play three masterpieces from their homeland, each of which is suffused with melancholy. Dvorák’s American String Quartet is a classic, Schulhoff’s First String Quartet is an explosion of youthful passion and Janácek’s Intimate Letters is a heart-rending tale of unrequited desire. Classical music at its very best: straight from your ears to your heart.

Het DepotWe’re kicking off your cultural year in Leuven with two top artists. Oliver Symons – who all locals know and adore as the guy from Bazart – and his Warhola play slick R&B pop with plenty of auto-tune and thumping bass. The result sounds much more otherworldly than your run-of-the-mill pop music.

Fond of Tsar B, Jamie Woon, James Blake, Yeasayer, Banks or Oscar and the Wolf? Warhola is Belgiums biggest new pop sensation and will surely be music to your ears.

LUCA Campus LemmensDido and Aeneas is a much loved chamber opera by Henry Purcell. The Carthaginian Queen Dido falls madly in love with Aeneas, a hero of the Trojan War. The aria Dido’s Lament, sung at the end after Aeneas leaves her, chills you to the bone.

But there is more going on here. Is the tragic relationship between the central characters political or psycho-sexual? Is it one big allegory?

The lesser-known The Medium by Gian Carlo Menotti is also deceptively light-hearted. A self-declared medium deceives her customers. Until she goes round the bend, when she starts seeing real ghosts. Or not? As a spectator you’re left bewildered: what is real, and what isn’t?

BAC IS BACK

During Open BAC we throw open the doors of the BAC Atelier. You can visit the studios and meet our residents. In the spring, we are also launching an open call for new residents.

DO IT YOURSELF!BAC ATELIER

In the BAC Atelier we make room for (artistic) experiment. It is a fertile breeding ground for talent. Since 2016, students and staff members of KU Leuven Association can request a free studio space. The winner of the LUCA Showcase Award, which awards top talent at the LUCA School of Arts, also gets shelter.

Visual and audiovisual artists, designers and performers encounter one another here. We thus stimulate interdisciplinary contacts, which are just as important in the arts as they are in science. Those two fields share more than you might think. Both artists and researchers seek to offer new perspectives on the world and neither hesitate to break taboos. That is why art and science go hand in hand at the BAC Atelier.

GIJS VAN VAERENBERGH

The duo of architects and artists Gijs Van Vae-renberg is artist in residence at the BAC Atelier. You might know them from Reading between the Lines, the ‘vista church’ in Borgloon. During the reopening of the BAC Atelier in 2019, their new light installation was unveiled on the façade of the building.

FROM SPIN-OFF TO ART LAB

The BAC Atelier is housed in the former Institute of Bacteriology on Vital Decosterstraat. Ground-breaking vaccines were developed there. One could call it the first spin-off of KU Leuven. That way we have breathed new life into a protected monument and a gem of our university heritage.

Nathalie Vissers is one of our newest residents. She’s writing a PhD in experimental psychology

and is a photographer.
