Culmination of a Constellation Over any night, stars and constellations in the sky will appear to move from east to west due to the Earth’s rotation on its axis. A constellation will culminate (reach its highest point in the sky for your location) when it centres on the meridian - an imaginary line that runs across the sky from north to south and also passes through the zenith (the point high in the sky directly above your head). ObjectTypes:

Aster=Asterismofstars.Thisisagroupofstarsthatformarecognisablepatterne.g.theGreatSquareofPegasusortheTeapotinSagittarius.However,thesestarsaregenerallyatverydifferentdistancesanddonotformagravitationallyconnectedgroup.

BS=BinaryStar.Consistsoftwostarsincloseproximitytoeachother,withonestarassumedtoorbittheother.Inreality,manyhaveorbitsthathaveonlybeenpartiallyobservedoraresoslowthattheorbitisonlyinferred.Separations(Sep)forbinarystarsisgiveninarcseconds(“).

CS = Carbon Star. These are red giants with a high level of carbon compounds in theiratmosphere.M-class supergiants suchasAntaresandBetelgeuseappearmoreorange thenred.However,carbonstarsexhibitanoticeablereddishhue.TheB-Vcolourindex isanindicatorofhowredastaris.AntaresandBetelgeusehaveacolourindexof1.9.Incomparison,B-Vforcarbonstarsisoftengreaterthan3.ThecarbonstarDYCrucis(nearMimosa)hasacolourindexof5.8andisoneofthereddestknownstars.CarbonstarsaregiventheclassificationCm,nwheremisfrom0to9(decreasingtemperature)andnisfrom1to5(indicatingthestrengthofthecarbonbands).Forexample,RLeporisisoftypeC7,6.

DS=DoubleStar. Includesbothopticaldoublesandbinaries.However,heregiven specificallywhereitisnotknownifthetwostarsformabinarysystemoritisknownthattheyareanopticaldouble(achancelineofsight)becausethestarsareatverydifferentdistances.Sepinarcseconds.

GC=GlobularCluster.Atightgroupof10,000s,100,000sormillionsofstars,whichpackintoasphericalvolume.Thesearetheoldestobjectsinthegalaxy,somebeingaround13billionyearsofage.Globular clusters canbe classified according to thedegree of central stellar concentration.Class1globshave thehighestdegreeof central concentrationandbrightennoticeably towardscentre. Class 12 globs are very homogeneous in appearance with no apparent brighteningtowardscentre.Diametersaregiveninarcminutes(‘).

GX=Galaxy.Excludingthedwarfs,theyoftencontain100sofbillionsofstars.Broadlyclassifiedintoelliptical,spiralorbarredspiralgalaxies.Dimensionsgiveninarcminutes(‘).

MS=MultipleStar.Threeormorestarsinthesamesystem.Separationsgiveninarcseconds(“).

NB=DiffuseNebula. These are large clouds of interstellar gas anddust.Many, like theOrionNebulaandtheTarantula,arewell-knownstar-formingregions.Dimensionsareusuallygiveninarcminutes(‘).

OC = Open Cluster. A family of maybe a few hundred stars loosely tied to each other bygravitation.Thestarswillgenerallydisperseoverafewhundredmillionyears.Sizeinarcminutes.

PN=PlanetaryNebula.Manystars,suchastheSun,willeventuallyexpandintoredgiantsandthenshrinktobecomehotwhitedwarfs.Theexpandingoutershellofgasanddustleftbehindattheredgiantstageiscalledaplanetarynebula.

VS=VariableStar.Astarthatvariesinobservedmagnitude.Thiscouldbeduetochangesinthestar’s luminosity as it periodically swells and shrinks or because it has a companion thatsometimeseclipsesit.
