Lunches Lunch is a very important part of the day as it is a time to recharge the learning batteries of our students. Of late, we are having more and more students coming to the school office saying that they have no lunch. When a student presents at lunchtime saying that they have no lunch it puts pressure on the student and the canteen as, by then, the only option is a basic sandwich. We would appreciate if parents could ensure their children have sufficient food for the day, as the canteen are only able to supply a sandwich at short notice. State Carnivals Congratulations to Shauna Rawlinson and Brock Roe who will be representing the Western School Sports Association in Touch Football and Rugby Union Football next week. Well done on this achievement. Staff Professional Learning The staff of CVPS are always looking to stay informed of current pedagogies and improve their classroom practice. Last Monday and Tuesday, three staff members travelled to Dubbo to attend a two- day conference where Professor John Hattie and the Visible Learning team let participants through the learning strategies that have the greatest impact on learners, and what works! On Thursday and Friday, three other staff members attended an Effective Reading conference. Since 2000, there have been major reviews of the teaching of reading in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. These reviews, along with other research, have consistently identified five key components of effective reading programs: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. The conference outlined the research behind this thinking and how the components should be taught explicitly, systematically and sequentially. On the weekend, six of our teachers travelled to Sydney to attend a writing workshop hosted by Sheena Cameron, a well-respected author of many books. All staff have returned enthusiastic to share their learning with other staff and try strategies learnt at these valuable courses. Wendy Hogben Relieving Principal The Magic Words CVPS is delighted to welcome the Brainstorm Production of The Magic Wordson Monday 10 th September. This whole school performance shares strategies to help deal with bullying, and negative online behaviour. Through the show students discover that the secret to happiness is giving and receiving respect, being proud of your actions and achievements, and co-operating to reach a goal. The cost is $5 per student, and notes will go home today.

Tournament of Minds Our school team of Ruby Redfern, Tara Wilson, Hayley Statham, Seth May, Blake Irwin, Dominic Lucas and Khuslen Batmandakh, have been working exceptionally hard over the past month and have one more week in preparation for their performance at Charles Sturt University on Sunday the 26

th of August.

The long-term problem the students have had to solve is the following: There are many examples of walls or fences being built around the world for different purposes – predator fences, border fences, city walls, The Berlin Wall, The Great Wall of China, Chinas Green Fence etc. Some fences have been built to keep people out, others to keep people in. Fences can be built for defensive, offensive or symbolic reasons. While exploring, your team has found the remains of a fence. Your team has been given the task of identifying why the fence was built and by whom. You need to work out whether or not the fence achieved its purpose, and both the intended and unintended consequence of the fence being built. How do you know? The team has come up with a very clever solution and are currently rehearsing their performance. During the past few weeks, these students have developed their team work skills, problem-solving strategies, script writing skills and communication skills. I’m very confident they will perform to the best of their ability and represent the school with pride this Sunday. Thanks Mr Armstrong

Sports Steering Committee Last term we invited feedback on our PSSA and inter-school sports participation, including the opportunity to ask questions of current practices. The sports steering committee met last week to discuss this feedback and begin the process of refining our CVPS School Sport Policy. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions: Q: How is inter-school sport organised? A: All public schools are members of their local Primary School Sports Association (PSSA). CVPS is a member of Cudgegong Zone PSSA (Zone/District), which in turn is a member of Western School Sports Association (Regional/Western level), which is a member of the NSWPSSA (State). Further information is available at https://app.education.nsw.gov.au/sport/ Q: Who is in charge of sports at school / zone / regional level? A: At school – the principal is in charge, with responsibility delegated to the sports coordinator, who this year is Mr Wilson. At Zone level there are convenors for each trial, who report to the President who this year is Mr Will Lindsay from Ilford PS. At Western level there are also convenors for each sport. Their contact details are available at https://app.education.nsw.gov.au/sport/western Q: What are the sporting pathways offered at CVPS? A: Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics pathways are via the school, zone, regional and state carnivals. All other sports hold regional trials in either Term 1 or 2 for selection in the Western side at the state carnival. Students must turn 8 in the year of competition to be eligible to compete in these events. Q: Why aren’t parents involved in school team selection? A: Transparency. To ensure there is no perception of bias the selection decision rests with the teacher’s professional judgement. Q: Shade, shelter and sunscreen – who takes responsibility on excursions? A: Everyone. Just as students are responsible for wearing their hat at school, the same goes for sporting events outside of school. When attending a venue, teachers choose the most appropriate place to set up, mindful of shade and shelter from the elements. Book Week Parade On Friday, 31st August, we are holding our annual Book Character Parade. Students can wear their costume to school, however, due to the chilly mornings jumpers and sensible shoes will need to be worn. Joel Wilson Relieving Deputy Principal

P&C News

Middle of the term already!

While it appears to be a quiet term for the P&C there is plenty going on behind the scenes.

$5000 More!

Firstly, a big thank you to everyone who supported our Term 2 Fundraisers. We have added another $5000 to our sports court fundraising. It was very satisfying to add that big red strip to our Wall Thermometer last week.

Newcastle Permanent Support

We have also confirmed our support of the Newcastle Permanent Introducer Program. This means if anyone takes out a home or business loan over $100 000 with Newcastle Permanent and mentions the CVPS P&C during their application, Newcastle Permanent will donate $600 to the P&C. How good is that?! It can be for a new home or business or it can be for a loan you can be transferring from another institution.

You do not have to be a family of CVPS to qualify. Any person who mentions Cudgegong Valley Public School P&C will trigger the payment. So tell all your family and friends and work mates. If you know of anyone about to go through the loan process with Newcastle Permanent tell them to say our name! Imagine if we were mentioned 10 times in a year. That would be $6000 paid straight into our fundraising account and spent on our kids.

Father’s Day Stall 29th

August

The notes will have come home regarding next week’s Father’s Day stall. The teachers will bring their classes down to the school hall to choose gifts throughout the morning on Wednesday 29

th August. The gifts will be

available from the canteen at recess on Thursday and Friday for those children who are away on Wednesday.

Did you know the Mother’s Day stall is 40% more successful than the Father’s Day stall? So come on dads, slip $4 into your child’s bag this week and enjoy the surprise on Father’s Day!

Thank you Mudgee Running Festival

I would like to give a BIG thank you to our helpers on last Sunday’s Running Festival BBQ. It was a very cold and windy day but we had 12 wonderful volunteers cook and serve over 220 meals to the runners and their supporters.

Thank you to:

John, Sara, Kristie, Sarah, Ellen, Diana, Rowena, Amy, Kayla, Melissa, Chrissy and Mark for giving your time to this fundraiser.

Initial count shows $900 raised for the school, which is a grand result for such a cold day which meant many runners headed straight off to warmer places after their event.

Next meeting Thursday, 19th September at 7pm.

Cheers,

Jen Buckley

Zone Athletic Carnival results will be published in the

6B Attendance is Fantastic! As part of our focus on improving attendance across Stage 3, all classes have been marking off a letter from the words ‘Perfect Attendance’ whenever everyone from their class is at school. 6B was the first class to achieve ‘Perfect Attendance’, so last Friday they walked to Dewhurst Reserve and played in the park as a reward for their efforts. Great job 6B!

HOST FAMILY NEEDED! Student Exchange Australia New Zealand is looking for a volunteer host family for a 16 year old Japanese boy who is currently attending Mudgee High School. He is very well settled at the school, so we are hoping that someone from the local community may be interested in hosting him.

He is easygoing and friendly, and loves sport and outdoor activities. Together with his host family he would love to experience new activities, share the Japanese culture and simply be part of his host family’s daily life. We are looking for a family who are able to host him from April to November.

If you are interested, please phone Masako or Tempel at the Student Exchange Office: 1300 135 331 or send an email to [email protected].
