Safe-In the Playground This week at CVPS, our focus is on being ‘Safe-In the Playground’. Students will be discussing safe play options in their classes and supported to make safe choices when in the playground. This will include no physical contact between students during games. Games such as the ‘Power Ranger’ game, which includes hitting and kicking are now banned. Pink slips will be handed out to students who are seen to be making safe play choices.

Garden Club We are thrilled to announce that our Garden Club will resume their Wednesday sessions this week. One student from each class, not Kindergarten at this stage, has been nominated to

take part this term. We look forward to a productive term in the garden. Thank you to the parent volunteers who make this experience possible. Wendy Hogben Deputy Principal

Multiplication Following the Stage 2 Parent Information Evening we had a number of parents and carers ask how to help their children learn the multiplication tables. Listed below are a range of strategies to help children learn their tables. Confidence with multiplication factors is important for children in primary school. Ensuring your child is confident will give them essential tools for success in maths. The following tips will provide some useful advice and great ideas to help you support your child in learning their tables. 1. Get them familiar with multiplication concepts The first step with multiplication is to make sure your child is familiar with what numbers represent. Before they can cope with multiplication they need to be confident with sequences of numbers. You can start when your child is quite young by practising counting forwards and backwards by twos and threes. Counting objects, making sets of similar objects and using blocks, LEGO or snap cubes can all help to increase your child’s confidence with number and multiplication facts. 2. Double your numbers If your child learns how to double numbers this will help them to make connections between different tables, for example the 2, 4, and 8 times tables. 3. Practise tables as a time-filler When driving, or waiting for an appointment, these can be perfect opportunities for times table practice. It’s always better (for both your child and you) to spend just a few minutes reciting or testing tables rather than going into overdrive and spending too long practising them. 4. Use the right vocabulary Make sure you are using the right language when talking about multiplication. Take a simple multiplication equation, such as 3 x 5 = 15. The 3 and the 5 are what we call factors of 15 and 15 is a multiple of 3 and 5. 5. Help them with the ones they find tricky There are usually one or two multiplication facts in each times table that can cause difficulty. When you notice your child is stumbling over the same fact each time, try to give them different strategies to remember the tricky fact. You could even get your child to write the fact out in a fun way on a piece of card and then stick it somewhere prominent (like on the fridge) so that they have an extra reminder.

Voluntary Contributions Voluntary contributions are $47 per student or $79 per family. Thank you to all of those families who have already sent this in. While these payments are voluntary, we appreciate the revenue,

all of which goes directly into purchasing resources to support students’ learning. Don’t forget our generous P&C has provided a $200 gift card and all families who pay the contribution prior to 29 March will go into the draw. Don’t miss out!

We are collecting Coles Sports

for Schools vouchers which can

be put into the box at the school

office foyer.

Mudgee Show - CVPS Art Across the school, many students and teachers have been working creatively to produce a range of artworks for entry into this year’s Mudgee Show. Students are excited to be able to showcase their work to family and friends. Sarah McNamara

6. Use a number grid Printing off a simple 100 number grid can be a great way to demonstrate how times tables relate to number sequences. You can get your child to colour in multiples of different numbers on different number squares so that they can clearly see the number patterns. 7. Divide and conquer As well as learning the multiplication tables, your child should also know the division facts for each one. For example, if 3 times 5 is 15, 15 divided by 5 is 3, and 15 divided by 3 is 5. 8. Make it real The danger with too much rote learning of multiplication tables is that children can fail to see the use of these facts in real life. Try to take opportunities to get your child to use multiplication in problem solving, for example working out quantities for scaling up a recipe, or calculating the price of more than one item of shopping. 9. Create a challenge Make it fun by turning multiplication tables practice into a competition or challenge for your child, by timing them and keeping a record of their scores. You could even join in yourself and set a challenge to learn more difficult multiplication facts, such as the 13 times table, and get your child to test you at the end of the week in exchange for testing them.

Clean Up Australia Day This year our school will be participating in the annual Clean Up Australia Day. This event will take place at school on Friday 2 March. Each class has been allocated a section of the school to tidy, and we are all looking forward to the positive impact this will have on our school environment. We are asking parents to please provide their children with a pair of gardening gloves and a shopping bag for use during our clean up. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Allison Lucas

Kindergarten 2019 Have you advised the school that your child is starting Kindergarten next year? If not, please give the office a call so we can keep you informed of Kindergarten 2019 orientation events. Enrolment packs will be sent home later in the year.

St George Illawarra Dragons visit to CVPS Our school was fortunate to have a number of the St George Illawarra Dragons’ players visit last week to talk to the students about wellbeing and participating in Rugby League.
