CTE Meeting Minutes April 14,2015 LOCATION: Engineering Conference Room # 110 TIME: l:00pm MEMBERS: Laurie Nalepa, Nona Matatova, Elmida Baghdaserians, Eric Swelstad, Cathy Pyles, Annette Jennings, Bill Hendricks, Karen Daar, Ellie Rabani, Anastasios Sioukas, Michael Avila, Andres Cruzalegui, Joyce Romero, Mary Cox, Cheryl Pearson, Liana Hekimyan. ; > CTE certificate completion update Laurie Nalepa gave an update on the skill/achievement certificate project. A report containing a number of certificates issued per department was distributed. > COOP Ed Award Laurie announced that the LAVC Coop Ed Program won an award as the College Program of the Year. > SFP Interviews Nona Matatova informed all the participants about the SFP Office Assistant position interview that will take a place on April 24, 2015. > Advisory Board Guidelines Laurie Nalepa talked about Advisory Board Guidelines. She informed the committee that one of most important aspect of the Advisory Board meeting is to invite a wide rate of industry experts who are not affiliated with college. The industry experts should outnumber faculty, staff and students. > CCAOE Video The link to the video that was showcased at the Spring 2015 CCAOE conference, Ted Talk, outlining the skills our students will need to possess in the future, will be emailed to the department chairs as soon as it is posted on the web. > Perkins IV Surveys Nona Matatova reminded all department chairs about Perkins IV (VTEA) Surveys Deadline. Laurie suggested using iPads in classrooms for the surveys. > Deadlines regarding POs and Conference requests

• Laurie Nalepa gave an update on the skill/achievement certificate project. A

Advisory Board Meeting Guidelines

1. Give me possible dates so I can check my calendar.

2. Be sure to invite the following individuals:

Erika Endrijonas - PresidentKaren Daar - VPAndres Cruzalegui - CounselingJoyce Romero- CounselingDoug Marriott - Co Op Ed

3. Invite a wide range of industry experts. While adjunct faculty isencouraged to attend, the industry experts should be people who arenot affiliated with the college. Remember, the industry experts shouldoutnumber faculty, staff and students.

While it is important to provide an overview of the program, make surethe majority of the discussion focuses on recommendations from theindustry experts.

4. Be sure to have a sign in sheet with the name of the individuals, companyname, and contact information.

5. Develop and distribute an agenda. The agenda should include a discussionof recommendations that were implemented from last year.

6. Assign someone to take minutes. Make sure the minute reflect what wasdiscussed and documents a working breakfast/lunch/dinner. We need tojustify the money spent on food.

7. Be sure to distribute the CTE pathways handout to the members.

8. Conduct a Skills Exercise where the members discuss the skill set studentsneed coming out of your program. See nursing example.

9. Conduct the GAP Analysis Exercise where the participants discuss the typesof companies that should be on the board in the future. (See Gap Analysishandout. Please note you are welcome to change the form to make it work foryou.) The intent of the exercise is to have the industry members suggest thetype of experts that could be added to the board in the future. We are notasking them to do the recruiting.

10. Make sure participants complete the survey.

11. After the meeting is completed, return the following items to Laurie:• The sign in sheet• The minutes• The skills exercise• The gap analysis• The surveys• List of recommendations

CTE is an educational path to a career in a technical field. The primary focus of a CTE program is to provideeducation and support that will enable students to obtain lifelong careers in personally rewarding occupations.The CTE programs at Los Angeles Valley College provide students with education and training that is affordable,practical and leads to employment.

CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION

The CTE Student Learning Outcomes committee has established that the following four goals represent thecore learning objectives of the CTE program at Los Angeles Valley College:

1. Communication Skills: Students will be able to communicate clearly through writing, speaking, listeningand reading.

2. Reasoning/Critical Thinking Skills: Students will be able to acquire, evaluate and interpret information.As a result, students will be able to solve problems relevant to their field of study.

3. Technical Skills: Students will be able to demonstrate technical skills appropriate to their field of study.
