Case Study – Tes ng Services Business Intelligence

Synopsis

A BI delivery func on was having ongoing challenges successfully comple ng the tes ng of various assets to agreed

meframes. CSKnexus were engaged to provide test leads to review, recommend and implement various solu ons to get tes ng back on track.

The Journey

A formal Review of Tes ng Processes and Procedures was conducted on:

- Test Strategy and planning documenta on;

- Tes ng framework in use to create and execute test cases;

- Test management tools in use by the organisa on;

- Test Environment management and test data requirements for full and delta load management; and

- Tes ng scope management.

Issues Iden fied included:

- No defini ve understanding of difference between various test phases to have the adequate test coverage;

- Test resources lack a fundamental understanding of the data warehouse due to a lack of exposure and training;

- Complex test management tool with lack of test traceability against the scope;

- Lack of project scope management leads to tes ng team taking accountability of changes to scope upon commencing the tes ng phase;

- Test engagement commencing at a later phase of the project leave the test team ill prepared;

- Single test environment shared by mul ple teams impac ng the test deployments; thus impac ng the delivery melines; and

- No framework to test the repor ng layers of the BI solu on.

Recommenda ons

A number of recommenda ons were made to improve the efficiency of test delivery, including:

- Test Strategy:

• Defined a set of standard tests to create and execute for Full and Delta load tests that provided minimum test coverage in case of any delays with code deployments;

• Test data requirements and environment requirements were clearly stated in the strategy and

planning phase to avoid any discrepancies that may arise at later stage of the project;

• Daily and weekly repor ng templates were delivered to update the test status to the project stakeholders for visibility of tes ng ac vi es;

• A low level of automa on for extrac on layer within the data warehouse was established to save me on regression tes ng; and

• Test framework to test the repor ng layer (including

Tableau and Splunk Dashboards) was established

The Results

A number of recommenda ons were accepted and ac oned resul ng in:

- The es ma on phase and delivery of tes ng became more reliable and milestone dates planned accurately and delivered against;

• Test Leads engaging from the early stages of the SDLC and se ng up strong test strategy and planning in place with be er understanding of the scope;

• Se ng up a standard test framework for both ETL and Repor ng layers across the BI&A Test pla orm providing strong test traceability to project stakeholders;

• Control over the scope change by Project team; escala ng all changes to the change management team as appropriately; and

• Test teams building strong rela onship with Business team and project teams; enabling the test delivery with minor impacts to the melines.
