The release of the August 2012 Jersey proofs has seen Agri-Gene
Jersey Sires excel in both Australia and the USA.
Here in Australia the APR listings are dominated by one bull; Nowell SANDBLAST. Since receiving his first official proof he has been positioned at the Top of the rankings, a position he has now enjoyed for the past four proof runs and now with the addition of Genomics he has gone even higher. He is a huge 102 APR points higher than his nearest Australian proven peer.
While there is no questioning his huge Production proof +606M, he is also the No.1 Protein Kgs and JSI Sire with high a Type rating +111 where he is especially good for his Udder Index rating of +114 and his Ligament and Rear Udders are in the Top 1% of the breed. Combine this with his ability to lower Cell Counts and increase daughter Fertility; it is easy to see how he has an unsurpassed Likeability score of +106 and is starting to see high use across the breed as a Sire of Sons.
The other Australian Jersey bull who continues to shine is “Second Crop Success Star”; Riverside SPIRITUAL who continues to add daughters and remains amongst the Top 10 Proven Sires in the breed and now has over 1,000 milking daughters and is also proving popular as a Sexed Semen Sire.
From the USA New Release Sire; Sweetie PLUS Iatolas Bold who debuted at No.1 in the April USDA proofs added another 33 daughters
and held his position amongst the Top 10 JPI Sires which is now headed by three Sunset Canyon MAXIMUM sons. At +1.9 for Overall Type, plus is the No.1 Type bull in the Top 30 JSI bulls and he has an excellent Udder Index rating of +4.67 with solid Production +1437M and outstanding Health Traits for Productive Life, Cell Counts and is one of the best for Semen Fertility at +3.7. He is also ranked amongst the Top 10 Sires in the USA for PTA Type, Production, Fluid Merit Dollars, Dairy Form, Rump Width, Rear Udder Height and Rear Udder Width.
Richies Jace TBONE A364 now has almost 8,000 daughters milking in the USA and remains one of the best all-round Jersey Sires with 57 lbs of Fat and 31 lbs of Protein, positive deviations and Type scores of +2 for Overall Type and over +3.5 for his Udder Index. Tbone is the No.1 Sire for Teat Placement along with been the equal No.1 Type Sire in the USA with Agri-Gene Type and Udder Specialist; Tower Vue Prime TEQUILA - ET. Tbone is also ranked amongst the Top 10 Sires for Dairy Form, Foot Angle and Udder Cleft. In Australia where his daughters are now coming into milk, he is one of only two sires in the breed who are over +200 for APR and over +120 for Overall Type.
For breed leading show Type in the USA however there is no going past Tower Vue Prime TEQUILA - ET who is siring the show winning heifers and cows that are creating all the excitement
in North America. Tequila’s early calves in Australia are standouts, siring them with greater Stature, strong Top lines, superb Rump and Foot Angle, coupled with outstanding Strength and Style. He now has 120 classified daughters in the USA where he remains the leading Type +2, Stature +4.1 and Udder Index +6.55 Sire.

“I am very much enjoying my new job here, and all the members have been very welcoming,” says Cassandra, who took over the role from Lorraine Keating in May this year.
Cassandra comes to her new role after doing administration work in areas including music education, the automotive industry, white goods, hotel reception and supermarkets.
“All industries need administration, and I feel very fortunate to be able to experience an array of industries whilst still doing what I do – administration,” she says.
Cassandra grew up amid orchards and vineyards at Red Cliffs on the Murray River 15km from Mildura. Her home and school were surrounded by grape vines.
“We would pitch in and help where we could for extra pocket money,” she says. “Picking season is a very busy time of year up there, but we were all very wary of the weather all year round. Too much rain can damage crops and not enough rain does the same thing. Winter brings a lot of frosts which could completely ruin the crops.”
Her new role is her first work involving cattle. “Jerseys are unique to me,” she says. “The first noticeable thing for me was their smaller size and their beautiful eyes.
“I hadn’t really taken much notice of dairy cows prior to working for Jersey Australia, but now I have a great appreciation for what all the farmers do with their herds.
“I was very surprised by how much goes into everything with dairy cows - not just the production side of things, but the breeding, the importance of what they are fed, and how to measure what is a great cow family.”
New office coordinator Cassandra Lowes says she is part of a team at Jersey Australia headquarters which wants to help members with any Jersey matters, no matter how big or small.

Cassandra says that in her new role she wants to speed up paperwork, and to be able to give out more information to members about issues such as genetics and genomics.
She would also like to enhance communication with members about what is happening in the office, and let them know more about upcoming dates.
Cassandra says she’d like to show members that Cathy, Jenny and her are in the office to help them.
She also wants to meet members where and when she can, including at events such as International Dairy Week.
Cassandra also plans to communicate via the Jersey Forum and a column in the Australian Jersey Journal.

It has become apparent very quickly that there are members still not quite sure what is required when it comes to DNA testing. Over the past two months
random DNA has been requested and many have come back without parent verification, and it’s not just the random DNA.
DNA with parent verification is required for all ET animals prior to registration and Randomly selected animals. If the bottom half of the application form is not completed when submitted, the results will only be a DNA profile without parent verification. If this happens, then you will be up for additional charges to obtain the parent verification (Quick Tip: parent verification is included in the DNA testing charge if requested at the same time).
The only time additional charges will apply is if University of QLD does not have the Sire or Dam on file. This is called an External Profile charge, which is a small fee of $8.80 each animal. If you are unsure whether University of QLD will have the Sire and/or Dam on file to match the animal being tested, you can check by logging on to iJersey and look up the DNA case number for the animal. You can also find out by contacting Cathy, Jenny or I at Jersey House.
For those of you whom regularly have embryos from overseas, it is a good idea to ask for a pedigree and a DNA profile (if you can) when making your purchase. This can save trouble down the track trying to get these details when you test for DNA, Genomics and registration.
Just a couple of quick things – Classification Round 2 forms and Futurity Forms are now available online at www.jersey.com.au, and keep an eye out for soon to be launched “iReg” the online registration for iJersey.
