To commemorate this auspicious event, in your handsis the very first Guide to Malaysian Doctors of Aesthetics.A medical tourism initiative by Cosmetic Surgery & Beautymaga-

zine, this guidebook will also be translated into Chinese for distribution

to Chinese markets.As we at Cosmetic Surgery & Beautymagazine are frequently asked for

recommendations and advice on which doctors to go to for treatments, we

thought it was about time we introduced some of these doctors to our readers,to give some background and more insight into what treatments are availableand who is doing what.

We thought this guidebook format would be nice and easy for readers tocarry about. Under the headings of Plastic Surgery, Dermatology, CosmeticDentistry and Aesthetics, the doctors are placed in alphabetical order for easyreference. The doctors are also presented in double page layouts with their

photos so you know what they look like! While most, if not all, doctors cannowadays be found by doing a Google search anyway, a directory with theircontact details is conveniently placed at the back of this booklet.

Our aim is to provide more handy format guidebooks in the future fordistribution on our roadshows at exhibitions and events that we take part inaround the region along with the magazine.

Dr. Heng Kien Seng studied

medicine at the NationalUniversity of Malaysia from

1988 till 1993. He had his first experiencein surgery upon reaching the shores

of Sabah. He was transferred to theKuala Lumpur General Hospital(KLGH) in 1996 after the completion

of his part I fellowship examination.He underwent training in varioussurgical rotations which includedtraining in general surgery, urology,

orthopaedics and hepatobiliarydiseases.

His plastic surgery training beganin 1999 at the Department of PlasticSurgery at KLGH. After completingtwo years of training, he was acceptedto the Department of Plastic Surgery,

Singapore General Hospital (SGH).During his three years in SGH, heunderwent extensive and comprehensive

training in various sub-disciplines inplastic surgery including burns,

reconstructive, microsurgery andcraniomaxillofacial surgery. During his

training, Dr. Heng travelled extensivelyand visited various plastic surgerycentres to further his knowledge andskills in his chosen field. His stints

abroad included training with thefollowing:

Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan; Dr. Edward Owen Terino at the

Plastic Surgery Institute ofSouthern California and;

Dr. Nicanor G. Isse at the Isse

Institute of Cosmetic Surgery,

Burbank, California.Upon his return to Malaysia in

2004, Dr. Heng took up a position asa lecturer and consultant plastic surgeon

at University Malaya Medical Centre.Dr. Heng advanced his cosmetic surgerypractice in the private wing of University

Malaya Specialist Centre from 2004to 2005. He was accepted into theMalaysian Association of Plastic,Aesthetic and Craniomaxillofacial

Surgeons (MAPACS) in 2004.In 2006, Dr. Heng left university

practice and joined a group ofdermatologists in Klang. He furtheredhis knowledge and expertise in variouscosmetic surgery procedures whichincluded liposuction, contouring and

sculpturing of the body, breast surgeryas well as the creation of double eyelids,rhinoplasty and facelift.

Dr. Heng is the first plastic surgeonin Malaysia to be trained by the Vaser

Institute, a Colorado-based establishmentdedicated to surgical training in body

sculpting. Upon completion of morethan 100 cases of body sculpting, hewent on to be one of the first fewplastic surgeons in the world to undergo

training in High Definition Liposculpture,an advanced body contouring techniquedeveloped by Colombian plastic surgeon

Dr. Alfredo Hoyos. This is a three-dimensional procedure that can revealsculpted, well-toned, muscular detailsof the body.

In early 2007, Dr. Heng furthered

Malaysia.In May 2007, Dr. Heng started his

own cosmetic surgery centre at the

Nicanor Plastic & Cosmetic SurgeryCentre. Dr. Heng continues to updatehimself on the recent techniques,technologies and advancements in

Cosmetic Surgery so that his patientsreceive only the best in aestheticsurgery.

Dr. Somasundaram Sathappan is

a plastic and reconstructivesurgeon and heads the Soma

Plastic Surgery (formerly known as

Clinical Aesthetics) clinic in KualaLumpur, Malaysia. Drawing on nearlytwo decades of strong surgicalexperience, Dr. Soma offers a variety

of cosmetic procedures at his clinic.I like plastic surgery as it is an

amalgamation of art and surgery,Dr. Soma says. Seeing a person

transformed makes it all worthwhile.In addition to the liposuction,

facelifts and breast augmentationsand reductions he does in his clinic,Dr. Somas extensive surgicalbackground includes microsurgery,hand surgery and general plastic

surgery for patients suffering limbtrauma or orofacial cancer.

Craniofacial surgery is a particular

speciality, and one in which Dr. Somatakes great pride.

I personally get immensesatisfaction from cleft lip surgeries,

he said. Nothing like seeing amothers face when her child smiles

after a cleft lip surgery.Dr. Soma received his medical

degree from the University of Malaya

in Kuala Lumpur in 1989 and was

posted to Sarawak in Malaysia Borneofor a year and a half before returningto Kuala Lumpur and joining the

National University of Malaysia as atrainee lecturer in the Department ofSurgery.

Dr. Soma completed his Fellowship

of the Royal College of Surgeons inEdinburgh in Scotland in 1994 andreturned to the National University ofMalaysia for a Masters degree in

surgery in 1996, followed by additionalplastic surgery training at the Welsh

Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgeryin Swansea, Wales, which he completedin 2001.

A special interest in treating burns,scars and keloids led Dr. Soma to help

establish the Advanced Burns Centreat the National University of Malaysia.

He is also a member of the Asian Scar

Advisory Board, with the aim ofadvancing the science of scar andkeloid treatment. In private practice,he actively treats serious burns, and is

keenly involved in treating scars andkeloids after the burn wound has

healed.The Board also tries to formulate

guidelines for other doctors to follow

and these should be published soon,Dr. Soma said.

Dr. Soma was a lead investigator in

a landmark trial comparing siliconegel and a placebo in the treatment ofsternal scars. This study was published inPlastic & Reconstructive Surgeryin

2005 and has been quoted in otherpublications numerous times.

Dr. Soma has lectured at manylocal and international meetings,

typically on scars and scar treatmentand stem cell facial rejuvenation usingplatelet rich plasma.

Dr. Soma keeps a foot in theresearch community with two ongoingprojects. One is a prospective trial to

determine the efficacy of varioustreatments for chronic lymphoedemaof the limbs while the other is a

prospective study comparing theefficacy of bovine skin and paraffingauze for skin donor site dressing.

Much of his medical experiencehas been while in government service nearly 15 years, Dr. Soma noted. Henow says he wishes to concentrate his

expertise on the patients in his privatepractice.

aesthetic and laser treatments.The Ko Skin Specialist Centre

chain has since become one of the

largest dermatology and laser centrechains in Malaysia if not the world,attracting visits by doctors and clientsfrom all over the world including the

United States, Canada, Europe, theMiddle East, Japan, Korea, China,Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia, NewZealand, Indonesia and Singapore. Dr.

also a trainer in the use of botulinumtoxin A, fillers and lasers and is happy

to share his knowledge with youngdoctors who want to learn.

While he has attended courses toimprove his skills through the years,nowadays he is frequently invited to

present talks at conferences as well the most recent one being at theSummit Business Asia Conferencein Singapore in April. He has also

contributed to studies and written

papers for dermatological journals. Hewas also President for the Malaysian

Society of Aesthetic Medicine(MSAM) from 2007 to 2009.

Through his experience, Dr. Ko hasalso innovated some of the procedures

that he does: I refine the currentmedical aesthetic procedures andlaser treatments. We tailor procedures

When asked how many years

Dr. N. Sutina Nordin recounted, I

started doing chemical peels in 1996,then botulinum toxin injections in1999, fillers in 2001 and since thenlasers and light devices and everything

else related to aesthetic medicine!Dr. Sutinas specialty is non-surgical,

minimally-invasive aesthetic procedureslike injectables and laserlipolisis which

give patients results as if surgery wasdone.

She was one of the first doctors tobe trained in laserlipolisis with thefirst-ever laser for fat, the SmartLipo.I was trained in Italy in 2005 andstarted practising this technique and

have been doing it ever since. Laser-lipolisis has been my focus for manyyears and I was elected as a trainer by

Deka Italy, the supplier for SmartLipo.I started by treating small areas but

have progressed to treat faces andlarger areas.

Dr. Sutina studied at the Universityof Malaya medical school and graduatedin 1991. She then worked as a house

officer and medical officer in theGynaecology, Medicine, Paediatricsand Surgery Departments. Sheworked for four years in the Surgery

department before leaving governmentpractice to join a private generalpractice in KL. Two years later, shejoined Mont Kiara Medical Centre

(now Twin Towers Medical Centre)

where she was the Primary Care

Physician for two years.I started the Womens Wellness

Centre with the in-house obgyn. My

interest in aesthetic medicine startedthen. We set up the Beauty Clinicwhere I offered services like chemicalpeels and Endermologie, she explained.

As the demand for these treatmentsgrew, Dr. Sutina decided to set upAesthetic Medical Services in PhileoDamansara 1 within a plastic surgery

and dental centre. When the plasticsurgeon closed shop, she started the

En-Hanze Medical Aesthetic Centre,where she operates to this day.

Over the past 10 years I havetrained and trained, attending manycourses, to develop my skills. I went to

Seoul, Korea, to learn about dermotoxininjections from the Dysport Institute;France to learn mesotherapy under

Dr. Le Coz; I went to Italy for laser-lipolisis training, and the US for vein

treatments.Injectables are my passion.

Theres so much you can do with aneedle and syringe! Fillers, botulinumtoxin A, mesotherapy, intradermic

injections and threads are myfavourites. I developed a keen eye on

Her passion for her work is clear: ILOVE the work that I do. I feel verypassionate about what I do and doing

it really well. There are so many thingswe do not know about people whenthey walk in because everybody has a

front. Things that some people thinkare trivial are not if they affect yourlife and psychological state. I am ableto make people happy about themselves,

they have more self-

After graduating as a doctor

from Universiti Sains Malaysiain 2006, Dr. William Hoo Khee

Liam started his professional career in

Alor Setar. There, he spent years honinghis skills in various specialist and surgicaldepartments. Dr. Williams interest inaesthetic medicine led him to further

his studies with a Diploma in AestheticMedicine with the American Academyof Aesthetic Medicine 2011 and a PostGraduate Certificate in Primary Care

Dermatology 2012. He is also a Memberof the American Academy of Aesthetic

Medicine and the Malaysian Society ofAesthetic Medicine (MSAM).

Dr. Williams move into aestheticmedicine was unplanned. During hisyears serving at various health clinics

throughout Malaysia, he noticed thatmany people men and women alike were troubled by skin problems

such as pigment disorders, hair lossand premature aging.

It may sound bizarre, as manypeople have low esteem and lose

confidence in themselves yet they donot seek treatment for these treatableproblems, Dr. William stated.

This lack of knowledge affectsnot only their careers but also theirdaily lives and personal relationships. Iam surprised that in this era of the

internet and globalisation, many peopleare not aware of how to help themselves,

while others shy away from seekingtreatment. Dr. William added: Often,

they do not know what treatment

Because of this, nowadays, Dr.William said that patient education isthe most important aspect of mydaily practice. With this in mind he

has begun to do public presentationson aesthetics and was a speaker ata Health Fair organised by a localnewspaper recently.

Dr. William now works with his sister,also an aesthetics physician, at the

Anna Hoo Clinic in Kuala Lumpur. Thismove has paved the way for him topursue his interest in the various non-surgical forms of aesthetic treatmentseven further. The range of treatments
