The Future of Reputation: Gossip,
Rumor and Privacy on the Internet
Internet offers opportunities for personal expression and communication.
Personal lives are broadcasted for all to see by a single Google search.
I found most interesting was his take on free speech, privacy and anonymity.
FREE SPEECHThe First Amendment: prohibits congress from
interfering with the freedom of religion, speech, assembly and the press.
Freedom of speech gives us the right to express ourselves even if our speech is trivial, despicable, crass, and repulsive.
Humans are creative beings and without the protection of free speech our world would be black and white.
Brings out the truth
Privacy Promotes individual autonomy. Humans can express themselves in all their
uniqueness and honesty. “Privacy permits individuals to express
unpopular ideas to people they trust without having to worry how society will judge them or whether they will face retaliation”
Anonymity An advantage of anonymity is that is allows
people to express themselves freely. According to Solove, people desire to be
anonymous because they fear social ostracism or even from being fired from their jobs.
How Does This Relate To Class?
