It's Brexit, not Trump: Germany's export slump mainly caused by Britain

Germany’s recent export slump was driven mainly by weaker sales to Britain rather than the broader

trade war, data showed on Wednesday, after Brexit had an unusually big impact on Europe’s largest

economy in the second quarter.

But trade data reviewed by Reuters showed that German exports to the United States actually jumped

in the April-June period while foreign sales to Britain nosedived in the same three months.

Wall Street's stocks make back some ground but remain in bearish corrective territories

Despite lower European markets and news that increased the risk of a no-deal Brexit, US equity

markets made solid gains overnight following the sell-off the previous day. U.S. stocks ended higher

on Wednesday in low volume holiday markets as investors take time off heading into the U.S. Labor

Day holiday weekend.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, DJIA, supported by solid gains in energy stocks, climbed a

healthy 258.20 points, or 1.0%, to 26,036, while the S&P 500 added 18.78 points, or 0.65%, to

2,887.94. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite index added 29.94 points, or 0.38%, to 7,856.88.

3 U.S. does not intend to intervene in currency markets for now, Mnuchin tells Bloomberg Neutral

U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Wednesday the United States does not intend to

intervene in currency markets for now, Bloomberg News reported.

Mnuchin told Bloomberg in an interview that the situation could change in the future but that he

believes such actions would be more effective if the U.S. Treasury intervened in conjunction with

both the Federal Reserve and U.S. allies.

The Treasury Department has “no intention of intervention at this time,” Bloomberg quoted Mnuchin

as saying. “Situations could change in the future but right now we are not contemplating an

intervention.”

Argentina to extend maturities of international bonds, IMF debt - Treasury minister

Argentina will negotiate with holders of its sovereign bonds and the International Monetary Fund to

extend the maturities of its debt obligations as a way of ensuring the country’s ability to pay, Treasury

Minister Hernan Lacunza said on Wednesday.

At a news conference after meetings with an IMF team visiting Argentina, Lacunza said the

government would “re-profile” the maturities of debt owed to the IMF under a $57 billion (46.4

billion pounds) standby agreement.

Interest and principal payments on bonds issued under international and local law will not be altered

in the re-profiling. The changes in maturities would be aimed at obligations held by institutional,

rather than individual investors, he said.

Treasury chief says U.S. seriously considering ultra-long bonds – Bloomberg

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Wednesday the possibility of issuing ultra-long U.S.

bonds is “under very serious consideration” by the Trump administration, Bloomberg News reported.

“If the conditions are right, then I would anticipate we’ll take advantage of long-term borrowing and

execute on that,” Mnuchin told Bloomberg in an interview.

Mnuchin said his renewed interest in 50- or 100-year bonds was unrelated to the drop in yields on

shorter-term U.S. debt, Bloomberg reported.

Currently, the 30-year bond is the longest-dated U.S. Treasury bond.

U.S. Treasury debt yields fell on Wednesday, with 30-year yields setting all-time lows, as fears about

a recession and U.S.-China trade tensions stoked unrelenting demand for low-risk government debt.

Oil prices hold gains after U.S. inventory drawdown

Oil prices clung to gains on Thursday after official data confirmed a big drop in U.S. crude

inventories, helping ease concerns about weakening demand, but worries about wider economic

growth held prices in check.

U.S. crude was up by 6 cents, or 0.1%, at $55.84 a barrel, while Brent crude was down 7 cents, or

0.1%, at $60.42 a barrel by 0011 GMT after rising for two days. Oil prices rose around 1.5 percent in

the previous session.

U.S. crude oil inventories fell last week by 10 million barrels, compared with analysts' expectations

for a decrease of 2.1 million barrels, as imports slowed, the Energy Information Administration said.

Telegram plans to release its Gram tokens ahead of Oct. 31 deadline – Report

Messaging giant Telegram is reportedly planning to get its native tokens Gram out in the market ahead

of its scheduled date of Oct. 31.

The company could launch the first batches of its token “within the next two months,” The New York

Times reported Tuesday, citing three anonymous investors who have spoken with Telegram recently.

Gram tokens will operate with a decentralized structure similar to bitcoin (BTC), Telegram said in a

sales pitch seen by the NYT. The structure means Telegram won’t have control over how and where

Grams move, per the report.

Back in July, Gram tokens went on sale on cryptocurrency exchange Liquid at a price three times of

its private placement. A Korean company Gram Asia, the largest holder of Gram tokens in Asia, sold

a portion of its Gram tokens to the public at $4 apiece.

US Air Force Partners With Blockchain Big Data Management Platform

The United States Air Force (USAF) partnered with blockchain big data management startup

Constellation.

According to a Constellation press release published on Aug. 27, the startup signed a working contract

with the USAF. The U.S. Air Force better explains the scope of the partnership in the following

statement:

“Air Force Research Laboratory and AFWERX have partnered to streamline the Small Business

Innovation Research process in an attempt to speed up the experience, broaden the pool of potential

applicants and decrease bureaucratic overhead.”

VP of Business Development at Constellation Benjamin Diggles — who’s responsible for the

partnership — further notes that the USAF has many data sources that need to be secured, such as

drones, planes and satellites.

He also adds that “clean and consolidated data that can be queried instantly is a big need within the

defense apparatus."

Cryptocurrencies are upending the worlds of banking, retail and payments in countless ways, but there

has been one area where this burgeoning industry has somewhat fallen behind: investments.

While it can be easy to build portfolios that focus on stocks and shares or fiat currencies, diversifying

into crypto funds has proven harder for consumers and professionals alike. This has been partially

because of how many financial institutions have been reluctant to embrace digital assets so far.

Switzerland’s First Licensed Crypto Bank Is Eyeing Singapore Next

Sygnum is in talks with local regulators to seal a banking license in Singapore, Bloomberg reported

on Aug. 28.

The cryptocurrency firm has only just been issued a conditional banking and securities dealer license

in Switzerland — and now aims to become a fully regulated bank on the island nation so it can provide

a full suite of financial services.

The financial services it would be able to offer include custodial services for Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether

(ETH), as well as conversions between the two cryptocurrencies and Swiss francs, euros, Singapore

dollars and U.S. dollars.

Facebook is working with HackerOne on a bug bounty program for its Libra cryptocurrency

Facebook and its partners are moving ahead with their Libra cryptocurrency project and announced

they are working with HackerOne on a bug bounty program for applications built on its blockchain.

The move comes even as government regulators have called for the company to suspend the project

while they assess its legality and the potential threat it could pose to the global financial system.

They’re offering up to $10,000 for security experts who find flaws in code in projects developed on

the foundation’s testnet.

Hong Kong Businesses Begin Adopting Bitcoin as a Form of Protest

The pro-democracy, anti-government protest movement in Hong Kong is spurring wider adoption of

cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC).

Yahoo! Finance reported on Aug. 28 that the political upheaval in the city — which has now entered

its 12th week — is prompting several local businesses and individuals to switch to using non-

sovereign and decentralized digital currencies.

On Aug. 26, Hong Kong department store Pricerite announced it would begin accepting Bitcoin,

Litecoin (LTC) and Ether (ETH) at its fourteen locations in Hong Kong.

Yahoo Finance! notes that the store has indicated it will be able to swiftly convert the crypto into

Hong Kong dollars using the Bitcoin network’s scalability layer, Lightning Network.

Alongside traditional retailers, cryptocurrency firm Genesis Block has been operating 14 crypto

ATMs across the city.

In July, Genesis Block — which trades under the name “CoinHere” — distributed water to protestors

that had been paid for using international donations in Bitcoin Cash (BCH), as well as umbrellas —

a symbolic reference to the city’s 2014 Umbrella Revolution.

The surge in interest in cryptocurrencies comes against a backdrop of other forms of economic

activism. Earlier this month, protestors initiated an action to withdraw as much money as possible

from their bank accounts, or convert their local currency into US dollars.

This had a twofold purpose, serving both as preemptive protection of their personal assets and sending

a sharp warning to Chinese authorities. Bitcoin trading volumes in Hong Kong soared in June amidst

the turmoil, and the coin continues to trade locally at a several hundred dollar premium on peer-to-

peer exchange LocalBitcoins.

As early as June, moreover, it was reported that a numver of Hong Kong’s tycoons — a city which

counts 853 individuals worth more than $100 million — had begun to move their wealth offshore.
