The storyA walk through the streets of Tripoli - Lebanon

a vantage point from which to observe

local, regional and global conflicts

intertwined with the 40-year-old battle between two neighbouring districts in Tripoli:• Bab al-Tabbaneh - a Sunni/

Salafi stronghold

• Jabal Mohsen - the Alawite enclave that overlooks it

It is a journey through different conflicts

that fight each other since the Lebanese civil war (1975 – 1990) for control over the town

It is a war between neighbours

where Salafi militias are fighting the Damascus Alawite regime

and which worsened given the massive arrival of Syrian refugees in Lebanon - more than 1.1 million - since the local Alawites feel more threatened by a growing Sunni presence

It is a war influenced by the Syrian conflict

The self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) is trying to extend its power over Tripoli in order to acquire access to the Mediterranean sea
