The journey to Christmas begins with the season of Advent

The season of Advent marks the beginning of a new church year. At this time, we reflect on the meaning of the incarnation, ministry, suffering, death, and the resurrection of Jesus for us. In the season of Advent we focus on the threefold coming of Jesus Christ to the world in the flesh, in the Word and Sacraments, and in glory. During Advent we should ask ourselves the same question that Martin Luther asked as he pondered the rich meaning of the Christmas story, “Why would the Lord of all the universe care enough about us mortals to take our flesh and share our woes?” The purpose of Advent is to reflect upon God’s love and to remind us of and prepare us for the greatest gift that this world has ever received. We gather to worship over the next four weeks to appreciate our God who hears our cries and answers our prayers. Advent is a reminder that even in the darkest moments of life, God is willing to send light into the world to provide comfort, grace and love. You, your family and friends are personally invited to join us on our Advent journey through the month of December. We will gather on Wednesday nights to share a meal together in the Celebration Center at 5:45pm, then worship together at 6:20pm in the Sanctuary with the Holden Evening Prayer. On December 24th, come and celebrate God’s light entering into the world at one of our four Christmas Eve worship services at 2:00, 4:00, 6:00, or 8:00pm. Holy Communion will be served at each of these candlelight services. I look forward to gathering in worship with you during this Advent season,

Pastor Drew Bakken

FROM ZACH'S DESK: A Reflection on Hotdish and a Show. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Those are the only words that seem right to start this thought. So many people put in so much time to make sure our youth know they are loved. We did a lot of thanking on the night of the show. Thank you to Chef Shane Moore who donated his time and vacation day for us. Thank you to Cathy Taylor for being part of fifty percent of our acts. Thank you to Thrivent Financial for their Action Team Grant. I won’t bore you with any more of this here, but if you are reading this, and you helped in some way, I say “Thank you” one last time.

Hotdish and a Show (HaaS) is special for a multitude of reasons. I would love to reflect on a few for this month’s newsletter. As mentioned above, by putting this together, we show our youth how loved they are. We fill a room with 150 people, make some yummy food, and donate to make sure they have great life experiences. This is what it means to be God’s love in the world. LCC, you do a good job at this.

HaaS is special because it breaks the mold, yet honors the broken mold. LCC, we are a talented bunch. This is known, not only by us, but by our community as well. The talent portion of our evening is unlike anything else we do at LCC; We use our God given talents to entertain. Two of the highlights of the were: Mallory Maine performing Hallelujah. The way she played the violin and brought us to tears with her voice is something I’ll never forget. Mike Smith continues to “Wow” me. Danny Boy, set up with the context behind the song, made me get goosebumps.

HaaS is special because, LCC, you’re ok with goofy. You love the way our youth go on stage with plastic hats and kazoos and play Baby Shark with hand motions. You laugh at my ridiculous dad jokes. You find the Church Lady Prayer Circle hilarious. Sometimes, I think we get too stuck in our boxes and we forget to laugh together as a community. I love your goofiness, LCC.

HaaS is special because of numbers. In school, I learned that ministry isn’t about the numbers. But sometimes, it is. We put about 150 people in a room together. Together, you said yes to our youth with $4900. We had about 200 hours of volunteering, with 60 some volunteers. There were 19 acts in our show. We had 12 youth who received some of this money to go on their Idaho Servant Adventure. We plan to send 30 youth to Luther Crest Bible Camp next summer with this money as well. We had 1 big pan of Hotdish leftover.

On Monday, after the show, Laurie reminded me about one of the most powerful moments of the night. We sang, “Be present at our table, Lord”. It was stunning. Your voices are angelic. The Holy Spirit was there all night, but it was first felt here.

LCC, you are wonderful. Thank you again.

In peace, Zach

Page 35 A quick Middle School Gathering Reflection. Our young people continue to amaze me, time and time again. Our guest speaker, Tiger McCluen, joined us to share about how God's 10 Commandments help us live out God's Dream, this was the best Middle School Gathering talk I have heard to date. He really had our young people's attention and reminding them that God's love is bigger and more important than anything on earth. We had a wonderful time during Hotel Life (free time) and did some pretty great activities. Lastly, I should note, the highlight of the evening for me was watching our young people build new friendships and include everyone in our group! We have a wonderful group of young people.

Group Photo! What a great bunch!

Gather Winter 2020 Study Reformer Martin Luther used the word “vocation” or “calling” to refer to all aspects of human life. We are called to respond to God not just in our personal relationship with God but in our relationships with family and friends, in our work, and in our communities. This four-part Bible study will reflect on how our biblical forebears heard and responded to God’s call and will provide insight into how God is calling us—and how God may be calling others through us. Join us for Gather Studies, which start with brunch and fellowship prior to the study, on the 2nd Wednesday of every month in Chapel Hall.

Music Notes December 2019

The beginning of our church year A The “years” of our church always start with Advent season, December prior to Christmas. The church year is based on telling the story of Jesus with scripture. In our Lutheran tradition, we are on a three year scripture plan, rotating scriptures each year for three years. Starting December 1 we are in Year A.

On December 1, the scriptures are Isaiah 2:1-5, weapons of war will be transformed into instruments of peace; Psalm 122, peace will be in your walls; Romans 13:11-14, salvation is near and time to “wake up”; and Matthew 24: 36-44, the coming of the Son of Man is soon. Some hymns we will use for this first Sunday of Advent will be #254 Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus, #436 Wake, Awake, For Night is Flying, #490 Let All mortal Flesh Keep Silence, and #244 Rejoice, Rejoice, Believers.

On December 8, the scriptures are Isaiah 11:1-10, a ruler from David’s line will be ruler of justice and peace; Psalm 72:1-7, 18-19, there will be an abundance of peace; Romans 15: 4-13, live in harmony; and Matthew 3:1-12, a voice cries, “prepare the way of the Lord”. Some hymns appropriate for this Sunday would be #250 Blessed Be the God of Israel, #260 The King Shall Come, #256 Comfort, Comfort, Now My People, and #249 On Jordan’s Bank the Baptist’s Cry.

December 15, the third Sunday of Advent scriptures will be Isaiah 35: 1-10, God’s people will be free from harm; Psalm 146: 5-10, happy are those whose hope is in the Lord; James 5:7-10, be patient for the coming of the Lord; and Matthew 11:2-11, John the Baptist is the forerunner of Christ. Our hymns for this Sunday could be #264 Prepare the Royal Highway, #726 Light Dawns on a Weary World, #253 He Came Down, #239 Hark, the Glad Sound!, and #248 People, Look East.

December 22 is the fourth and last Sunday of Advent. The scriptures for this Sunday are Isaiah 7:10-16, the sign of Emmanuel; Psalm 80:1-7, 17-19, “let your face shine upon us and we shall be saved”; Romans 1:1-7, Paul’s greeting to the church in Rome; and Matthew 1:18-25, God the Son is near. Some hymns will be #257 O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, #265 the Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came, #267 Joy to the World and #263 Savior of the Nations, Come.

Have a blessed and peaceful Advent season. Cathy Taylor, Director of Music and Worship

As this is the end of my 3-year commitment as Property Chair, I am informing the council that I do not intend on signing on for an additional term.

I will be conducting what is likely to be my final committee meeting Thursday the 21st. We will be discussing the long list of upcoming projects that include the Sanctuary Floor, moving Laurie’s office to the current Library location, ADA compliant entry, and the exterior painting of the building. The next chairperson will also be involved with our new county road project. In the expense report you will see that Properties has a YTD usage of dollars just over $16,000. Due to the unknown cost of the upcoming projects, the best I can do for a projected 2020 budget is $20-$25,000. I think that the painting project and possibly the flooring project will have to fall into a separate building repair/update budget that would be a special project much like the roof.

We've had a pretty smooth transition into our new SS format.

The kids are loving having Kevin with us playing his guitar for our LCBC songs.

Carol Smith and Cathy Taylor have also graciously helped with piano accompaniment for learning our Pageant songs.

We have begun Pageant rehearsals and have all parts assigned.

On MEA weekend we had a special prayer lab set up in Chapel Hall and the kids had a blast going around to the stations.

Trunk or Treat was our big event of the month and was a big success. Thanks to all who sponsored trunks and participated. The service for not only our own church family extended to the area communities and we had between 300-400 folks present.

We are currently preparing for our Musical Extravaganza and Christmas Pageant (Dec 8) and our Parents Time Out (Dec 7, 3-6pm).

As for Wednesdays, we hosted Catherine Anderson from the NEMN Synod to present our first Family Faith Formation night and it was amazing!! We had great attendance and participation in our new GIFT program. Our hope for the new year is

In the midst of Advent commit-ments that come with the month of December, I invite you to take an hour on Thursday mornings for conversation, prayer and reflection. We gather at 8:30 in the back of the sanctuary. I look forward to seeing you on Thursday morning. —Pastor Kari

New Member Gathering and New Member Sunday and Wednesday – Our next new member gathering is December 19 at 7:00 pm. New Member gathering is an opportunity for new member to get to know other new members and members of LCC and learn more about Lutheran Church of the Cross. We will welcome new member on Sunday, January 5 at the 10:30 service and Wednesday, January 8th at the 6:20 service. If you are interested in joining please see Pastor Kari or Pastor Drew.

December Financial Update

As of the end of November, we look to be about $19,000 in the red. This is not unusual for the church at this time of year; we hope to be blessed with end of the year giving by members fulfilling their pledges. We also anticipate special Christmas financial gifts from our members that go above and beyond their pledged giving.

That said, I ask you to please consider giving a Christmas gift to your church so that we can end the year on a positive note. Earlier in the year we unfortunately experienced a sewer back up in our basement, caused by someone flushing a sweatshirt down the toilet. After insurance reimbursements, we are in need of another $5,000 to finish the restoration project so that we can use the rooms downstairs once again.

You can contact our Financial Secretary, Karen Wiele, for end of the year gifts like stocks, IRAs, Thrivent Choice Dollars, etc.

As we enter into the Advent season of preparation, I thank you for your ministry and your contributions to our church. Pastor Drew

John Wallin wants to give a special Thank You for the many congregation members and others that have kept John in their thoughts and prayers for the last couple of years. John just completed 28 days of radiation treatments at the Radiation Treatment center at St. Joe’s for his prostate cancer. His Lupron shot that he had in June to help lower his testosterone level in his cells to have the radiation treatments to be more effective is slowly leaving his body. It takes about 6 months for John’s body to return to about as normal as he will ever probably be.

to Tom Anderson and his kitchen crew for all the hard work that went into the breakfast. It was a great morning.

I am so impressed with the musical talents that our church has. The Sr. Choir seems to be growing with strong voices. I have enjoyed having them help us lead worship up front . There is something truly powerful and spiritual watching the joy that they have singing about God’s love. Thank you to Brain Stubbs. We have also seen growth in our praise band on Wednesday evenings. We now have enough volunteer musicians to form two bands. Thank you to Cathy Taylor for organizing our praise team and for making our Wednesday nights a worshipful time.

Associate Pastor’s Report – Pastor Kari Williamson Our New Member Sunday has been rescheduled to Sunday, January 5 and

Wednesday, January 8th. New Member gathering will be December 19th. Looking forward to welcoming a wonderful new group.

Thank you to Zach and Kari for a wonderful kick off to our Family Faith Formation Night on November 6th. Our topic was “What is Faith Formation?” It was a gift to see families interacting with each other and talking about faith. Each family received a Growing in Faith Together bag. In the bag were tools to continue faith conversations in each home. Thank you to Catherine Anderson from our Northeast Minnesota Synod for presenting on November 6th. The next Family Faith Formation Night is December 4, and entitled “Mental Health 101”.

Adult Forum schedule for January – May is coming together. January forums will be conversation about and voting on the 2020 church budget. In February we will kick off the 2020 LCC theme: “Under Construction” and Kari and Zach will lead a conversation about Family Faith Formation. In March come and learn more about Hospice and about Pequot Lakes Day of Caring which is supported by the high school in Pequot Lakes. In April the new Executive Director of Bridges of Hope will share about the work that Bridges of Hope is a part of and get an update on the County Road 13 project. In May, we will have a creation care forum and the Nisswa Chamber will bring us up to speed on all things Nisswa.

Thank you for all your prayers for the group of travelers in Israel. We are looking forward to sharing about our trip and experiences when we get back.

Nursery update: Thank you to Gail Goble for her years of service in our nursery. I give thanks for her dedication and love that she has shown to the kiddos that come into the nursery on Sunday mornings. We will be looking to find someone to fill that spot.

Pastor Drew and I have been working on a “theme” for our Advent Worship services.

Vacation: I will be gone from December 25 to January 2 to spend time with my family in Arizona. Thank you for the opportunity to be gone for my nephew’s confirmation on November 3.

Pastors’ Reports Senior Pastor’s Report – Pastor Drew Bakken The month of October was an exciting time in the life of our church. Confirmation has

started up and I am so impressed with our confirmands this year. I am amazed at the questions that they ask, their willingness to serve and to see the community that is growing in their small groups. This would not have been possible without Kari introducing route 56 a couple of years ago. That program lead to the strong bonds that our youth are forming in Confirmation. Also, a special thank you to Pastor Kari and Zach for helping our youth with the transition into confirmation and finding ways for them to get involved in our Jr. High programing. We have an amazing youth ministry team here at Lutheran Church of the Cross.

Another special thank you to our Stewardship committee under the direction of Craig Fink. We served over almost 200 people on Stewardship Sunday. It is great to see the energy and love that our members have for our church. We are truly blessed. Thank you

2019 LCC CHRISTMAS TREE OF SHARING Plan now to join other LCC members in gifting children and adults whose lives are touched by violence, abuse or addiction and brighten the lives of the elderly. Watch for the 2019 LCC Christmas Tree of Sharing, which will be coming soon to LCC’s Narthex. This year’s Sharing Tree gifts will benefit Mid MN Women’s Center, Children of Teen and Adult Challenge Participants and Residents of Hill’s Crossing Senior Living. Choose an ornament from the tree, purchase the gift requested on the ornament. Bring the unwrapped gift, with the ornament attached, back and place it under our LCC Tree of Sharing, which will be in the Narthex Sunday, December 1st – Sunday, December 8th. December 9th will be the last day we can accept gifts for the LCC Tree of Sharing. Thank you for sharing with God’s children as we celebrate His gift of the Christ Child given for all.

On Sunday, November 10, the Creation Care Team hosted their first ever Lunch and a Movie event featuring a delicious meal of tacos with all the trimmings, and watching National Geographic's "Before the Flood" starring Leonardo DiCaprio as narrator while traveling to five continents and the Arctic to see the devastation caused by climate change. 52 people attended, including families with kids, and found they were amazed by what they saw, heard, and learned. Look for more Lunch and a Movie events this coming year! You are invited to join in on the exciting things we want to work on - and you may even have some good ideas of your own to share!

The Creation Care Team hosted the Heartland Conference Congregations Caring For Creation event at LCC on Monday, October 28. Eight congregations, with 40 people registering to attend, were represented at this NE Synod EcoFaith Network gathering, with 5 people from St. Christopher's in Nisswa, Grace United Methodist Church in Pequot Lakes, and First Congregational UCC in Brainerd also attending to make it a truly community-wide outreach. Churches are recognizing the call to help our God-given Earth be life sustaining, and are looking for ways to start their own Creation Care Teams or just begin some activities that show they take Earth-keeping seriously.

Those who have contributed entries to the exhibit may pick up their items any time after Christmas.

NOVEMBER 24th was Global Mission Sunday. Our theme was “World Hunger”

A food-packing event was held during coffee hour in the Celebration Center coordinated by The Outreach Program of Brainerd Lakes (formally know as Kids Against Hunger) to focus on our theme. The LCC Foundation and ELCA World Hunger provided support for the food-packing event and a door offering was taken. (See pictures of the event on page 14)

Dr. Roger Macy and Todd Thompson gave the homilies during worship describing their involvement in mission trips to Haiti, Guatemala, and Honduras. Todd Thompson also provided special music for worship and Sunday School and gave the Children’s Message.

In addition to the financial support, Thrivent provided t-shirts, banners, name tags and thank you cards. Here is a list of projects and grants received from Thrivent Financial:

$250.00 for Stewardship Breakfast expenses $250.00 for Hotdish & A Show to help youth with cost of food for dinner. $250.00 for Wednesday Night Worship Suppers to help with cost of food.

WE ARE GRATEFUL TO THRIVENT FINANCIAL FOR THIS MONETARY SUPPORT!

Zach here: I wanted to add some extra love and thank you to Thrivent for supporting our youth ministry throughout the decades, especially for the recent Hotdish and a Show. I

also remember Thrivent supporting my youth group when I was in high school. As you can see on my page, we really are making a difference in our youth’s live with this fundraiser.

Thank you to Sally and Lenny Hodgson for requesting this grant.

A Message from our ELCA Global Missionary

Russian Correspondent

Through the Fog “Passengers of flight 1700 to Vladivostok; your flight has been delayed due to inclement weather at your destination.” “Unlikely,” was my first reaction. I had no doubts that the weather could be bad, mind you. The Russian Far East had been suffering from torrential rains and flooding for much of the late summer and early fall; one congregation in our deanery even had to cancel worship for two weeks because there was really no way to get around their city. It was not surprising, then, that another typhoon might be moving through the area. What did seem rather incredible was that we in Moscow could know what it would be like in Vladivostok after the plane's scheduled landed 8 hours later. There must be some technical delays, I was sure, and weather is just an excuse. I was proven wrong, however, after we started our descent to the V.K. Arseniev International Airport (VVO); just as I was about to put away my computer, the pilot abruptly lifted the plane up hard and to the right. Shortly thereafter, he announced over the speakers that we would have to circle the city for a while; the fog was just too thick for landing. “Typical Far East weather,” said Gennady after he and his wife Nina met me to take me in to my meeting at church, “but this means it will be a good day. A foggy morning means it will be warm and sunny in the afternoon.” Gennady was right. After experiencing various negative emotions (irritation, a bit of fear, worrying about being late) about conditions outside of my control, the cause of it all did eventually pass...and the Far East granted me some of the most beautiful “golden autumn” (as they say here) days that I have ever experienced. It was not just the weather, though, that brought me from doubt and worry to joy and thankfulness. It was also the chance to be in fellowship with God's people. Whenever in the life of a missionary I feel like I am blocked by the fog of the unknown, of misunderstanding, and, frankly, of evil, the good Lord sends people my way to show me that the fog does not last forever. Through them the light of Christ's victory shines, and the beauty of it inspires me to fly again. I pray that whatever fog you are experiencing these days not stop you from trusting the good that lies on the other side of it. May your interactions with one another keep you moving in order that the Spirit might continue to use you as a light of love for others. Your brother in Christ, Bradn

Blue Christmas Service Wednesday Evening, December 18th – 6:20p.m.

On Wednesday, December 18th during our Advent Worship Service using the Holden Evening Prayer, we will pause and acknowledge the many emotions

that this time of year brings forth for many of us. We will have an opportunity to light candles and walk with each other in a deep and meaningful way. In doing so we cling to the hope and promise of the season: that the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. We look forward to our time together on Wednesday, December 18th.

We are so appreciative and thankful that these families are willing to participate in the Worship Services on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings during Advent; you are each a blessing!

Christmas Eve Worship Services: We will have four Christmas Eve Candlelight Worship Services this year: 2:00, 4:00, 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. Approximately 80 volunteers are needed for these four services. We will have many visitors with us that evening and want to extend a warm welcome to each of them.

If your family is celebrating the weekend before or after Christmas and you won’t have company on Christmas Eve, please consider volunteering for one of the services. If you would like to just sit and enjoy the worship service, consider volunteering for one of the other services. We will need ushers, greeters, communion assistants, acolytes, readers, and worship coordinators! There will be a signup board in the narthex for all four services.
