POST HARVEST - GARDEN PLOT

This unexpected yield increase necessitated a final picking even when plant was finished. The size and quality of tomatoes was even more astonishing considering this plot received no water for final 3 weeks of maturing in hot conditions.

GRAPE (Vins interspecific hybrid ‘Vignoles’) A.M.C. Schilder, J.M. Gillett, and R.W. Sysak Botrytis bunch rot; Botrytis cincrea Department of Botany and Plant Pathology Michigan State University East Lansing, MI 48824 EVALUATION OF FUNGICIDES FOR BOTRYTIS BUNCH ROT CONTROL IN GRAPES, 2000: The experiment was conducted in a mature vineyard of Vitis Interspecific hybrid ’Vignoles’ in Leland MI. Vines were spaced at 6 x 10 ft and were cordon trained on a 2-wire trellis and hand-pruned. Treatments were applied to 3-vine plots and were replicated 4 times in a randomized complete block design. Sprays were applied with a Model T CO2 backpack sprayer equipped with a single XR TeeJet 8002VS nozzle, at a volume of 50 gpa and pressure of 40 psi. Sprays were applied at 3– to 4-week intervals. Spray dates and approximate phenological stages were as follows: 24 Jul (pre-bunch closing), 16 Aug (pre-veralson), 13 Sep (post-veralson), 3 Oct (pre-harvest). Disease was assessed on the center vine of each plot on 11 Oct, the day of harvest. The grapes were harvested at 18.7o Brix. Disease incidence (% clusters with at least one infected berry) and severity (% cluster area infected on diseased clusters only) were visually estimated by selecting 20 randomly selected clusters per plot. Rainfall for May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep, and Oct was 2.94, 1.97, 1.24, 1.84, 7.19 and 1,25 in., respectively. Disease pressure was moderate. During bloom and early fruit development, mostly cool and dry conditions prevailed. All treatments reduced disease incidence, expect Rovral which was not significantly different from the untreated control. This may indicate the presence of iprodione-resistent strains of Botrytis cinerea at this site. While most treatments provided statistically similar control, the highest numerical reduction was obtained with the Vangard/Flint/Vangard/Flint program. Control achieved by 2 sprays of Vangard was not statistically different from the Flint/Vangard/Flint/Vangard program with similarly timed Vangard sprays, suggesting that Flint provides no additional control of the disease in this case. Disease severity on infected clusters was low to moderate and was not significantly affected by treatment.
