Celebrating Book Week Last Thursday Crookwell Public School celebrated Book Week by holding the annual Book Character Parade. Students were invited to come to school dressed as their favourite characters. It was amazing to see the array of colour and creativity on display. School staff also dressed to impress as the cow from this year’s National Simultaneous Story, “The Cow Tripped Over the Moon.”

Elizabeth McDonald made a beautiful Rapunzel while

brother William was a very credible Spiderman.

Jaxon Anthony and Charlie enjoyed

participating in the Book Character Parade.

Jaxx Dixon was confused to see larger Minions

Maddy Wray and Kiarna McCarten.

Staff members all dressed as cows, inspired by this year’s book choice for the National Simultaneous read, ‘The Cow

Tripped Over the Moon’.

Courtney Merryfull and Jade Smith were dressed as

Pippi Longstocking while Tilly Rose paraded as Minnie Mouse and Kayla Merryfull as The Girl From Two Summers.

Dorothy from ‘The Wizard of Oz’ was the costume

choice of Hailey Collins and Regan Selmes.

Jet Tate chose to come as the very popular Harry Potter, with Evelyn Dark parading as The Saucepan Man made

famous in Enid Blyton’s classic, ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’.

VIEW Club Helping To Celebrate Book Week The Crookwell Evening VIEW Club works with the Smith Family to support its Reading for Life Program. As part of its unlocking opportunities through education and learning philosophy the local branch of VIEW decided to Celebrate Book Week by recognising a Crookwell Public School student who had progressed ‘from a reluctant to a switched- on reader’.

Charlotte Selmes was identified as the ‘switched-on reader’ and was presented with a $25 gift voucher from Mrs Rhondda O’Conner from the Crookwell Evening VIEW Club. Charlotte’s gift voucher will be spent at Davies Newsagency allowing her to purchase more books to read to become an even more switched-on reader.

Congratulations Charlotte! Have fun shopping and reading.

Phone Call As the 2015 – 2017 Crookwell Public School Plan comes to the end of its life our thoughts are turning to the development of the 2018 – 2020 Crookwell Public School Plan. In the development of a school plan it is imperative that each of the various stakeholders contribute towards the plan’s development.

Consequently, before the end of term a phone survey of randomly selected school families will be conducted to gauge your views as parents. It is not an onerous survey, there are only five questions to which we are seeking a frank and honest answer. I encourage you to enthusiastically participate in the survey to help us best develop a plan that effectively caters for the educational needs of all of Crookwell Public School’s students. If you are not contacted by phone in the coming weeks and you would like to take part in the survey, I encourage you to contact the school to complete the questionnaire.

Changes to student late arrivals/early departures process We have now transitioned to our new administration system and there are some changes to the way we record student late arrivals or early departures at the school office.

Parents no longer need to fill in the late arrival/early departure book and absence slips (which were then given to the student’s teachers).

The new process is as follows:

Come to the front office and advise office staff of a late arrival or early departure.

Office staff will then enter the late arrival or early departure directly into the new computerised program and a slip will be printed and given to the student to give to their teacher.

If you need to fill in an absence note for a previous whole day absence ask the office staff for an absence note slip.

These still need to be completed and will then be entered into the new system.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we make these changes. Book Busking During the last week of term, providing the weather is agreeable, students will ‘Book Busk’ in the Crookwell main street area. If the weather is inclement and you are unsure as to whether Book Busking will go ahead please contact the school by phoning 48321213 before journeying to support the buskers.

Book Busking occurs when our students read down the street, under the supervision of their class teacher, to showcase their reading skills. Often passers-by make a donation to show their appreciation. This money raised is used to help purchase additional reading resources for the school.

This is a very inspiring activity for all our children. We rely on the support of the community to help our children shine in the spotlight for just a short time. Please drop down the street and support the reading buskers if at all possible. We’d love to see you there!

Now anyone can help schools earn amazing equipment by shopping at Woolworths from the 26th July, 2017.

When you shop at Woolworths simply collect Woolworths Earn and Learn stickers from the checkout operator and place them on the Woolworths Earn and Learn sticker sheet. There’ll be one Woolworths Earn and Learn sticker for every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco, and gift cards). Once completed, simply place the sticker sheet in the collection box located in the foyer of Crookwell Public School.

Please get behind this initiative and help Crookwell Public School students get their share of the thousands of educational resources that are available through the Woolworths Earn and Learn program.

Flying Start This focus for this week’s session of Flying Start was ‘imagination’. The students listened intently to a story called “Hunting for Dragons” by Bruce Whatley before discussing what having an imagination and pretending means. They were then able to relate this to their own lives when telling Miss O’Neill that sometimes they imagine they are teachers or nurses. After our discussion, we created tiny little dragons of our own out of modelling clay. We also got to have another play on the fixed equipment as the sun was shining. We look forward to seeing you all again next Monday at 9.30am!

Lane Rowell painted a pirate ship.

Alfie Haynes explored the diggers in the blue kinetic sand.

Raene Hemara and Georgina Robertson sat alongside each

other while creating their dragons.

Alex Storrier and Dally Webster were pretty

impressed with their creations.

Cade Haynes was getting ready to go down the slide.

Mackenzie Browne balanced along the edges of the play

equipment.

Emma Campbell walked through the tunnel, trying to not get

any dirt on her clothes.

Seanna Keane and Isabelle Hewitt were following each other

around the equipment and stopped to pose for a photo together.

TENS in 1/2B Students in 1/2B are continuing to develop their number skills in TENS. This week our activity was to play ‘Go Fish’ using a deck of cards to make combinations of 10 or 20. There were so many times we had to go fish!

Alyssa Huang asks her buddies, Tegan Allport and Evelyn

Dark, for the missing number she needs to make 20.

Alex Anderson and Addie Dawson have a good time playing

‘Go Fish’ to develop their familiarity with number combinations.

Partners in Learning Parent Feedback Survey Our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online at home or on public computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey is available now and will close 13th October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary; however, your responses are very much appreciated. To access the survey go to: https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/pm6ps

If you would like to utilise school computers to complete the survey please phone the school and we will arrange for this to occur. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents or feel free to contact the school on 48 321 213 and speak with Mr Whittington about any concerns/queries regarding the survey.

Self-esteem, self-confidence, teamwork, strategic thinking are just some of the reasons we play chess but don’t the smiling faces of the boys below just say it all? Ten talented chess players from Crookwell Public School attended the NSW Junior Chess League one day Primary School Tournament at Moss Vale on Wednesday this week. Forty two teams from numerous primary schools competed in six rounds of chess over the duration of the day. All players from CPS put forward an amazing effort, experiencing many victories throughout the tournament. At the day’s conclusion Crookwell’s ‘A’ team - comprising Boyd Heidrich, Rylan Olde and Ari Stephenson - had earned 2nd place, narrowly being beaten by half a point! All competitors represented CPS with pride and are congratulated for their achievements, great work team!

Middle School Program Our Middle School Program has concluded for 2017 and the six sessions have been wonderful. The program has provided meaningful opportunities for a great deal of teaching and learning new skills to occur. The range of activities this year was fantastic and catered for the interests of all students. The students had an amazing time as did the tutors. The Middle School program would not have been successful without the assistance of our wonderful tutors: Mr Long and Mr Howard, we truly appreciate them giving up their time to share their skills and knowledge and thank you to our great staff for doing the same. We are lucky to live in this community where we have wonderful role models for our students.

George Lee and Mr Nedanoski enjoyed riding their bikes in the beautiful sunshine during Middle School Program.

Isabel Irish and Bethany Murray concentrate while learning how to do cross stitch.

Nicholas Wilcox-Symons and Riley Osborne were a great team in wood work with Mr Howard.

Jesse Faulkner learnt some bush survival skills.

Charles Butler was very excited to win a tail in the tail game

during Rock and Water activities.

What is Anaphylaxis? Anaphylaxis is a severe and sudden allergic reaction. It occurs when a person is exposed to an allergen (such as food or an insect bite). Reactions usually begin within minutes of exposure and can progress rapidly over a period of up to two hours or more. Anaphylaxis is potentially life threatening and always requires an emergency response. Fortunately anaphylactic reactions are uncommon and usually preventable.

At Crookwell Public School there are staff and students who suffer from severe allergic reactions and in order to provide a safe environment our policy is to restrict access to allergens.

ALL students are asked NOT to bring

nuts, peanut butter or Nutella to school.

If your child suffers from allergies the school needs to be informed. There is information available from the school office, along with forms that need to be filled in by parents of students who have been identified as being anaphylactic, ever been hospitalized due to anaphylaxis, or have been issued with an Epipen.

If you need clarification, please contact the school. Thank you for your support and understanding in this matter.
