21st August, 2020 Term 3 Week 5

The Crookwell Public School community wish Mrs Margaret Hudson, our school counsellor, a wonderful retirement.

A morning tea with staff was enjoyed on Tuesday to celebrate her last day with us.

Please keep in touch Margaret!

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land and pay our respects

to Elders past, present and future

Farewell Margaret Hudson

Science Week National Science Week is Australia's annual celebration of science and technology with the 2020 theme being ‘Deep Blue: innovations for the future of our oceans’. Our students have explored and discussed objects as tiny as cells, the height and engineering feat to build a wind turbine, ocean currents and energy and the robots that have been created to keep our oceans clean. Keep an eye on the newsletter for more updates on what students have completed in the near future.

Alyssa Huang uses the microscope to look at cells.

Pat Stivala utilises his research skills to locate the information he is searching for in his science unit.

Tegan Allport, Joe Stephenson and Alex Anderson enjoyed

using the STEM kits to design and build wind turbines.

Kade Fowler, Koa Pick and George Willis use the robotics kits to design and create simple robots to do specific tasks. Collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity

are the skills we teach students to enhance their future learning.

Year 6 Camp – Postponed for Term 3 The NSW Department of Education notified all schools on Monday 17th August that all camps were postponed for Term 3. The department also indicated all excursions are to be held only in our local area for the remainder of Term 3.

Our Stage 3 teachers are researching other options and they will pounce on organising an alternative activity if the department approves overnight excursions next term.

We know this is disappointing news for our Year 6 students and teachers but we will remain positive that restrictions will ease and we will be able to proceed with this excursion later in the year.

Last Week In Peer Support… Students played a team game called “Stepping Out” which explored the positivity of each group member and encouraged them to think about their attitudes and reactions to difficult situations. This was followed up by an activity called “What Would You Choose?”. This involved students thinking of a task they found challenging and then discussing different strategies they could use when faced with the task. The message delivered by group leaders was that at times, although we try our best, we still find some tasks difficult. This happens to everyone. This is when we may need to use different coping strategies and focus on our strengths.

James Haywood-Whipp, George Willis, Alex Anderson, Vincent Bill, Tahlia Goulay, Evelyn Dark, Ivy Bailey and

Dorothy playing the team game “Stepping Out”.

In the Classroom: 3/4 Koala The students in 3/4 Koala have been busy, both inside and outside the classroom, enthusiastically engaging in a broad range of academic, cultural, social and sporting activities. The following pictures give a ‘hint’ of some of the many things that are occurring.

Alexis Stivala thoughtfully completed the multiplication tables

quiz.

Bodi Waters needed a very steady hand and fertile

imagination to construct a house.

Hayley Richardson and William McDonald engage in a very

strategic game of chess.

The cold, wet weather could not wipe the wonderful smile

from Cooper Galway’s face. Maybe it’s the delicious contents of his lunch box that caused him to beam?

Good personal hygiene, thorough hand washing and regular use of hand sanitiser, coupled with a face mask, are wisely

used by Dustin Carr in the fight against COVID-19.

Noah Edward’s skipping rapidly improved with regular

practice. Undoubtedly, a very fit Noah will be well prepared for the Jump Rope for Heart skipping display planned for

later in the term.

Mad Socks & Snags on Monday for MS! Thank you to everyone who wore mad socks on Monday to raise awareness for MS, Multiple Sclerosis. There were some pretty amazing, colourful and odd socks stomping around the school on Monday. Even odd shoes became a thing!

The barbeque was such a delicious treat for lunch. We wish all the students participating in the MS Read-a-thon all the very best and a big thank you on behalf of everyone at CPS!

Charles Butler points out his very fruity socks on the morning run on Monday!

Zoe Knight rolls up her trousers to show her cool, patterned

socks!

Socks don’t get much brighter than those worn by Briah and

Lily.

Elouise looked the part with rainbows on her feet and in her

hair!

Piquet could take off at any moment because his superman

socks even had capes!

Emma, Indi and Jordan enjoy a sausage sandwich under the

COLA.

In the Classroom: 1/2 Emu Stage 1 classes have been very busy learning about the water cycle during their science lessons. We have also been looking at where water comes from and different water sources. Students have shown great knowledge of how to be ‘water wise’ and responsibly use our most precious resource, water.

Laura Watson and Jackson Winsor are very happy with their

water cycle in a bag experiment.

Jack Frost, Aria Bailey and Nathaniel Hockley show off their

completed water cycles.

Owen Moorby, Alvin Pearson and Olivia Woods are

impressed to watch the evaporation starting to take place within their water cycle bags.

Did you know? Australia uses approximately 25,000 gigalitres of water per annum - which is equivalent to 50 Sydney Harbours.

Harmony Day Celebrations The message of Harmony Day is ‘everyone belongs.’ The

day celebrates cultural diversity and fosters respect and tolerance for everyone who calls Australia home.

On Friday 28th August we will be holding a ‘belated Harmony Day’. We still have to follow the guidelines set out by the Department of Education, therefore we are unable to have visitors come in to the school on this day. Luckily for us, the wonderful teaching staff of CPS are a wealth of knowledge and have numerous fun activities planned for this special day.

The students will participate in a variety of workshops aimed at promoting acceptance and understanding of different cultures and traditions. Students are invited to wear something orange on this day as this colour traditionally

signifies social communications and meaningful conversations, as well as the encouragement of mutual respect.

Have you heard? This term, Mrs Bell is offering Home Reading support to all parents!

Reading is a very important aspect of learning across the entire curriculum for all primary students (K-6). Home Reading heavily supports the learning that takes place at school and consolidates a child’s understanding of many subjects. The benefits are enormous! There are many aspects to consider for optimal home reading success including:

- Choosing the best time and place for your child and family

- Text selection and appropriateness - Pre-reading strategies - Phonetics - Sentence structure - Spelling strategies and word work - Inferring - Reading strategies - Comprehension strategies - Connecting Texts - Praise and encouragement

Plus many, many more!

Mrs Bell is happy to meet one on one with parents to discuss home reading strategies and ways for it to be a success in your household. There is also the option to have a tele-conference call, too. Social distancing and hand sanitising requirements will be adhered to. Meetings will take place in the ‘Beyond Curriculum Centre’, next to the school. Please re-schedule if you are unwell.

If you’d like to make an appointment please phone the school on 48321213.

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you!

Mrs Jade Bell

Gymnastics Through lots of repetition, Kindergarten are getting very good at recalling the different warmup poses that Vaughn has taught us over the past few weeks. Happy cat, angry cat, child’s pose, straddle and seal pose are all part of our weekly warmup. This week Vaughn brought his bar with him where students were able to practise some movements of a flip, which included them hanging upside down and if they were confident enough, they let the bar go.

Just a reminder for all students who have long hair to have it tied up for gymnastics each week please. This will ensure students are able to perform all skills safely.

Harrison Smith demonstrates a very good child’s pose.

Benji Mossfield does not need reminding of how to do a

child’s pose.

Leo Campbell shows us an excellent bear crawl going

BACKWARDS!

Tenielle Richardson has very straight arms and straight legs.

Isla Webster shows us how brave she was while ‘hanging around’.

Ivy Stanger was excited to be practising movements of a flip

on the bar.

Yr 6 Sporting Challenge With Year 6 missing out on so many sporting events and activities this year due to COVID, Mrs Whittington and Mrs Thorpe decided that we had to think a little differently and come up with some new ways for our senior students to have some fun and make some memories of their final year of primary school.

The Yr 6 Sporting Challenge was created to give Yr 6 students an opportunity to have some fun with their peers and also earn some house points to go towards deciding who the Champion House of 2020 will be. The students started with hockey this week and will continue over the next few weeks with basketball, soccer and touch footy.

Good luck to each house group and make the most of these opportunities Yr 6!

Bluegum took on Waratah on Tuesday with Waratah taking

the points 4 goals to 2.

Joshua Churchill and Sophie Ward battle it out for

possession during the game.

Victa Woods found himself outnumbered by Waratah players

in the contest.
