th March The School Photographer will visit the

school to take class, individual and sibling photographs. Please ensure your child comes to school on that day looking clean, neat and tidy wearing full Crookwell Public School summer uniform. Remember jewellery is not permitted and girls can wear only red hair accessories.

Aboriginal Art Program On Tuesday thirty five students from Crookwell Public School visited the Goulburn Regional Art Gallery to engage in an Aboriginal Art Program. The program consisted of two sessions; the first being a gallery tour of Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts with Education Officer, Sally O’Neill, and the second a practical workshop with Duncan Smith, a Wiradjuri Echoes consultant.

During our tour of the gallery Sally familiarised us with the Aboriginal artist: Yidumduma Bill Harney. Bill’s incredible artworks were featured throughout the gallery where he depicted incredible stories from his elders, rock paintings and astrology. Students enjoyed hearing about Bill Harney’s history, life as an artist and the way he was able to share culture through art.

For our practical workshop with Duncan we entered the gallery’s studio for a range of cultural experiences. Duncan introduced us to his family and they showed us family artefacts including the didgeridoo and three different types of boomerangs. Duncan captivated us with a story that incorporated family, aboriginal language, native animals and music. To follow on from this story we had the opportunity to represent his story in an artwork using Aboriginal symbols. Duncan demonstrated key messages in the artwork including meeting places, fire and the Southern Cross.

After some art of our own, Duncan’s family shared their body paint with us by adding symbolism to our faces in readiness for a dance. They included us in traditional dances that again told their story, this time in a physical way.

All students had an excellent day extending their knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and art. Many thanks must go to Sally O’Neill and the Goulburn Regional Art Gallery who organised and provided this fantastic excursion free of charge to our students. It was such an incredible and worthwhile day. Thank you!

Peer Support Training Peer Support Training for all students in Year 6 will be held on Thursday March 15

th and Friday March 16

th. The

program involves two days of leadership training for Year 6 Peer Leaders who will then work with small groups comprising students from Kindergarten to Year 5.

The purpose of the Peer Support Program is to develop understandings, attitudes and skills necessary to help students in their Peer Support groups to: • Enhance their self esteem • Be more resilient • Cope with their changing environment • Foster positive relationships with others • Contribute to the wellbeing of the school community.

Year 10 students from Crookwell High will assist with the training of Year 6 Peer Leaders.

An important change to the usual Peer Support Training is a ‘school sleepover’ to be held on Friday March 23rd in the

school hall. Peer Support training activities will continue on Friday evening and therefore we hope all Year 6 students will attend. Students will have an evening meal and a light supper before bed. On Saturday morning, they will have breakfast before being collected by parents between 8am and 9am. Casual clothes appropriate for group activities are to be worn to school on both training days. It is a Work, Health and Safety requirement that closed shoes be worn.

On Thursday and Friday (15th

& 16th

March) students will

be required to bring: • a pencil case containing their usual supply of pens and pencils • a sun hat • sunscreen • lunch, recess and a water bottle • a sense of adventure • a sense of humour

Students staying on the following Friday night (23rd

March)

will also require: • a sleeping bag and pillow • small camping mat if you feel the floor would be too hard to sleep on • toothbrush and toothpaste, comb etc • a small hand towel • night attire • warm clothes in case it turns cool in the evening

If your child needs to take medication either on Friday evening or on Saturday morning this must be given to either Mrs Bell or Miss Bell on Friday morning. Please clearly label the medication with your child’s name and the required dosage. If you would like your child to participate in this very valuable experience please complete the permission slip below and return it to school by Friday 9

Swim Scheme This week students from Year 2 and Year 3 started the Swim Scheme program held at the Crookwell swimming pool. Although the weather hasn’t been all that warm it has been a fantastic first week of swimming. Students are learning a range of water safety measures at the beginning of each lesson, taking into account all different types of water environments including dams, rivers, beaches and pools. In smaller groups students enter the water with their swimming instructor to learn swimming skills such as entering and exiting the water, submerging, gliding and treading water. We look forward to more swimming next week and hopefully warmer weather!

Prefect Induction On Monday 26

th February our school

leaders: Levi Woods, Joseph Anderson, Emma Ward and Addison Whittington will be officially inducted into their role of Prefect for 2018. This very special assembly will take place at 2:00pm in the school hall. The official party will consist of our four Prefects, the Honorable Pru Goward, Relieving Principal Mr Michael Whittington and the parents of all Prefects, who have the honour of pinning the Prefect badge on their child. We look forward to sharing this special occasion with family and members of our school community.

Crookwell Equestrian Team Snowy Mountains Grammar School will be holding its annual Inter-schools Equestrian Competition over four days from Saturday the 28

th April until Tuesday the 1

st May 2018 in

Jindabyne, NSW. Students of Crookwell Public School who have been riding for more than one year and have a horse and transport of their own are invited to attend this fantastic event. Entries open on Friday the 9

th March at 9am until

Friday the 20th April.

Students must enter and pay online via https://www.globalentriesonline.com.au/interschools. Limited places are available. Program details plus online stabling and yard reservation will be available on registration. The event will include ODE, dressage, show jumping, stockhorse classes, show horse, sporting and fancy dress. Please see Miss Anthony for further details.

MILO T20 Blast Schools Cup Primary students will be participating in the MILO T20 Blast Schools Cup. We will be competing in Crookwell at Todkill Park on Monday 5

th March, 2018. There is a fee of $2.00 for

the day. We will be travelling by bus to and from the venue. The bus will be leaving from the front of the school at 9.15am. The bus will be back at the school in time for the afternoon routine of buses. Students will need to wear their sports uniform, have a packed recess and lunch, a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water to drink. University of N.S.W. Competitions for Yrs 3-6

Students who are currently in Years 3 - 6 are invited to take part in the Digital Technologies Competition, Science Competition, Spelling Assessment, English Competition and Mathematics Assessment. The competitions take place

in schools throughout Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Region and are an initiative of International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) of the University of N.S.W.

The Digital Technologies Competition will be held first, on Tuesday, 8

th May, 2018. The Science Competition will be

held on Tuesday 29th

May, 2018 and the Spelling Assessment will occur on Wednesday 13

th June. The English

Assessment will be on Tuesday 31st July and the

Mathematics Competition will be held Tuesday 14th August.

The competitions provide an opportunity for all students to gain a measure of their own achievement in an external assessment situation. It provides schools and teachers with comprehensive reporting of results and also gives parents helpful information regarding their child’s performance.

All students receive a certificate and an individual student report indicating which questions they answered correctly, as well as the average mark for the state. The student report is also useful for highlighting student strengths and weaknesses in the skills and processes of the competition subject area.

The entry fee is $9.90 per student, per competition, except for the Spelling Assessment Competition which costs $13.20 to participate.

Jollybops Performance On Tuesday 6

th March, the

Jollybops Science Show is once again returning to Crookwell Public School to present a science show for all students in K-6. Each show aims to bring science alive through exciting, stimulating and interactive science demonstrations. This year’s show will look at “Science with an Aboriginal Perspective - Flight, Fire & Sound” and will be part of supporting our NAIDOC celebrations. The shows will highlight Aboriginal technology and discovery. Do you know what David Uniapon, the Aboriginal man on our fifty dollar note, achieved? Or how the returning boomerang flies so well? Just a couple of things that will be looked at in this fast paced, exciting and interactive show. The K-2 performance will commence at 9.30am and 3-6 at 10.30am. From Year 6 to Year 7 REMINDER Information for students Moving into Year 7 in a NSW Government School in 2019 was attached to the News and Views last week. Completed forms need to be returned to the Administration Office of Crookwell Public School on or before Friday 16

th March, 2018.

2019 & 2020 Enrolment Information Required Shortly, the school will be required to lodge with the Department of Education its anticipated numbers for 2019 and 2020. It is very important, particularly in 2019, that the anticipated numbers closely match the actual enrolment numbers. We require your help to get it right to ensure that

next year we can again get off to a good start with classes formed and teachers available and ready to start teaching on day one.

Therefore, if you know of any child who will be enrolling in Kindergarten next year, or the following year, would you please list their names below and return the slip to school?

What is A Voluntary School Contribution?

The vast majority of public schools request a contribution from parents each year to supplement existing funding. These contributions allow schools to provide additional resources and learning programs for our students.

What Will The Money Be Used For?

The money will be used to purchase resources to support teaching/learning programs for each student across the school.

How Much? The suggested contribution is $50 per child. Please note that this roughly equates to $1 per child per week. I cannot stress enough the difference to our school finances that your contribution will make. The contribution fees are within the guidelines as set out by the Department of Education.

How To Pay

Please place your contribution, with the slip below, in an envelope and return it to the school office as soon as you are able. If you prefer, you may choose to pay a contribution in instalments. A receipt will be issued for all monies received.

Ethics Group Due to no Ethics teacher being available we can no longer offer Ethics classes. Ethics may be offered again later in the year if a volunteer/s completes the Ethics teacher training and is willing to come and teach Ethics classes at the school each week. Information on how to become an Ethics teacher is in the Community Announcements section of this newsletter. If you have chosen Ethics for your child/ren you need to inform the school on your new preference for your child/ren. There are two options, join a scripture group or join the non-participation group. To ensure students participate in classes according to their parents’ wishes please contact the school as soon as possible with your decision. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Clean Up Australia Day Crookwell Public School will be joining over 2,000 schools around the country to remove rubbish from our precious environment when we participate in Schools Clean Up Day on Friday 2

nd March, 2018. Students in Kindergarten, Year 1

and Year 2 will clean up the school playground and the area immediately surrounding the school. Students in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 will target an area further afield but still well within the Crookwell town boundary. Teachers and staff will accompany and supervise the students in their quest to make a positive difference to our local environment.

Students will need to wear sunscreen and a hat to participate. Students need to bring gloves and a disposable bag into which to place rubbish. The smaller bags of rubbish will be deposited in the larger bags that have been supplied by Clean-Up Australia and will be collected by the council later in the day.

Thank you Goulburn Tea Pot Ladies The Goulburn Tea Pot ladies began as a small group of dedicated and passionate women who wanted to make a difference for children with autism and their families. The group has grown over the last 13 years and their wonderful assistance has spread to families and schools right across the Goulburn/Crookwell district.

Mrs Mel Ashton and Mrs Judy Humphries visited the school this week and were very generous with their offer to support the students in our school. The Goulburn Tea Pot ladies will be providing two new iPads with specific apps to support students with autism, sensory mats and sensory ‘toys’ to assist students when they are feeling overwhelmed or are finding it difficult to focus.

We are truly grateful for your very generous donation to support the students at Crookwell Public School.

Mr Whittington had the pleasure of meeting two of the

Goulburn Tea Pot ladies at school on Thursday. Mrs Judy Humphries and Mrs Mel Ashton are fantastic supporters of

children with autism.

Canteen Meeting Have you ever worked in the canteen? Have your children ever used the school canteen? Are you aware of how the school canteen works? Do you know about the new government requirements that need to be implemented into the school canteen? On Monday 26

th February at 6pm

there will be a canteen meeting in the Year 5 room to discuss all matters relating to the school canteen. If you would like to be informed as to the new regulations there will be a representative to address these points and if you have some ideas that could be incorporated into the canteen please come and share. P&C Update The Binda Picnic Races are nearly here and the Crookwell Public School P&C along with the awesome staff work together to run a BBQ to raise funds to support our amazing school. The Races will be held on Saturday 17

th March. We

are looking for parent volunteers to help (we only have two parents who have indicated they can assist at this stage).

We require a number of parent volunteers to help in the school canteen on the Saturday morning to prepare meat & salad rolls and a few sandwiches. You would be working from approx. 8am-11am.

We need some parent volunteers to fill positions on a roster during the day either cooking the BBQ or selling sausage/steak sandwiches & soft drinks. This would be from approx. 11:30am-5pm. exact times for both jobs would be confirmed closer to the event. Volunteers would receive a free entry ticket to the races.

On Sunday 18th

March we have also been offered to raise some additional funds by helping to clean up around the racecourse, so we are looking for some volunteers to help with this job which would take 2-3 hours at the most, starting about 10am.

If you would be able to spare a couple of hours of your time on this weekend would you please complete the slip below and return it to the school office by next Friday 23

PLEASE NOTE: Please be advised that P&C volunteers from previous years will be unavailable to participate in this fundraising effort as many of these families are no longer at Crookwell Public School as their youngest child has now moved on to High School.

Crookwell PS could offer students a

weekly Primary Ethics class

again in 2018.

We need Primary Ethics volunteer teacher/s.

If you can spare 1-2 hours a week please consider helping children develop skills they can use to solve problems throughout their lives. The weekly lessons are scripted for you and easy to follow. The classes teach children how to think about and discuss moral issues in a mutually respectful way. The scripted lessons do not tell the children what to think but rather to prompt the children’s own thinking and discussion about topics such as friendship, sharing, laziness, fairness. You are there only to help everybody have input into the discussion. Primary Ethics provides the opportunity for NSW public primary school students who don’t attend scripture classes (SRE) to participate in philosophical ethics classes. Primary Ethics employs professional experts to train and support volunteers – they are always available for you. Volunteers are well supported by teachers who stay in the classroom. Volunteers often say that they find the classes interesting and informative to teach.

Come and meet a Local Area Coordinator (LAC) at a community connection desk

in your area.

The 20 minutes, one to one consultation, is an opportunity to bring your questions to

an LAC.

The LAC can assist you with the following:

Provide you with information regarding the NDIS;

Help you understand your NDIS funded plan;

Help you identify the next steps to take on your NDIS journey;

Connect you with your local community;

Help identify what supports are available in the community if you do not have

a NDIS plan.
