Welcome to Term 3 Welcome back to school for another term of learning; I trust that you all had an enjoyable break. The farewell arch for Mr Adamson on the last day of term 2 was a fabulous event and a great send off for our principal of 13.5 years. There was an article about the farewell arch in last week’s Auburn Review. For anyone who missed it there is a copy on page 8. We are now at the half way point of our 3-year school plan (2018-2020). Our plan focuses on key areas for ongoing growth and development as identified by our three strategic directions. A copy of our school plan can be downloaded from the school website. I look forward to leading the school over the next two terms while Mr Adamson is on leave.

Staffing Update - Term 3 The following arrangements are in place for Term 3 while Mr Adamson is on leave. Mr Greg Weeks (R/Principal), Mrs Na-talie Lewis (R/Deputy Principal Monday - Thursday), Mrs Marcia Skelton (R/Deputy Principal Friday), Ms Frances Colley (R/Assistant Principal Year 2) and Mrs Maria Sorras (R/Assistant Principal Early Stage One Friday). Mrs Ros Xagoraris is replacing Mrs Katie Whitelaw on 2W Monday - Thursday and Mrs Margarita Sozomenou on Friday. We welcome Mrs Bertha Sun (replacing Mrs Kimes on 5/6H), Mrs Irina Wood (RFF) and Mrs Georgia Kalis (RFF and in-class support). Ms Wendy Stanton (4S) is on long service leave for the first 5 weeks of this term. 4S is being taught by Mr Chris Hellier. Mrs Sarah Garlick is R/Assistant Principal Stage 2 on a Friday while Ms Stanton is on leave. Ms Zoe Kogias (6K) is on leave until 6 August. 6K is being taught by Mr Mark Fitzgerald. Ms Atachparian (KA) is on leave until 2 August. KA is being taught by Mrs Lauren Vuong.

P&C Meeting - Tuesday 6 August Please join us for the next P&C Meeting at 7.30pm. I will provide an update on the school’s 3-year plan and outline many of the programs and activities happening throughout Term 3. At 6.30pm, prior to the P&C Meeting, our school employed speech pathologist will present an information session for parents around children’s speech and how it relates to their edu-cation.

Term 3 Stage Brochures You will receive via the Enews Year list email, a copy of the Stage brochure for Term 3 which outlines particular areas of learning for your child’s class this term.

School Invoice payments for Term 3 - Please pay now! Term 3 invoices were issued last week. Payments (excursions, incursions, sports, FLIP dance, camps etc) need be final-ised in the coming days. If you require assistance with payments please call the Office to arrange to speak with me.

Payments can be made with cash or EFTPOS at the Office or through the on-line system (link below)

http://www.newington-p.schoolwebsites.com.au/parents-payment-online.aspx

Winter PSSA

The Winter PSSA season has been affected once again by wet weather and Council ground closures meaning several rounds have been cancelled to date. At the beginning of Term 2 the school invoiced students for 8 weeks of bus costs with the intention of adding further weeks as required on the Term 3 School Statement. At this time with only 2 or 3 rounds to play (dependent on which sport) we do not have to allocate any further costs as the 8 weeks already charged can now cater for the first weeks of Term 3. Should any of our teams qualify for the finals the school will cover the costs of the buses required.

Bell System upgrade We have recently upgraded the bell system to ensure that students and teachers in all classrooms and areas of he school can hear the bell. This includes the bell to signal break times, an evacuation, lockdown or lockout.

Education Week Education Week is a statewide, annual event, held during the first week of August, to celebrate NSW public education. The theme for 2019 is 'Every Student, Every Voice'. It is a celebration of student empowerment and how the NSW public edu-cation system gives students the skills they need in order to have and express a voice during their own educational journey and as engaged global citizens. Please join us next week to celebrate Education Week. The details are listed on page 1 of this Croak.

The Haunted House by Maya Valente 3O

Sizzling Start ( The Portal) As I stood up straight and looked at the endless tunnel with determi-nation, I didn't know exactly what to do but I also knew that there was only one way and it was to continue until it ended. I knew it was go-ing to take a long time but that was the only way. The long tunnel looked beautiful. It had lime green bushes covering the ancient old train tracks.

Pebble ( Door Closes) It was getting dark and I knew I was close to the end of the tunnel. Luckily, I brought my torch. I finally saw up ahead an ending. Sudden-ly, the door started opening as if it were inviting me inside. I had no choice, I was lost. It was dark and I had no food to eat so I had to move forward. I took a deep breath and entered into the unknown. Suddenly, I had a change of heart but the door had closed behind me before I could return. The door had a key hole but where could I find the key ? As I looked around, I realised I was standing next to an old, creepy house. I wondered to myself, “Was it haunted ? “

Rock ( Lost) I walked towards the creepy, old, dilapidated door. I knocked on it. Then, straight away the door opened. I was scared but also curious at the same time. I took a step forward on the creaky, discoloured wood-en floorboards. I was cautious when walking because I thought it could break but I had to continue the journey with no choice. I walked on the floor boards and they creaked loudly like the house was hun-dreds of years old. I saw a crackling fire place which illuminated the room. It was crackling so loud you could barely hear a mouse. There were cobwebs everywhere like spider caves. ..

Seven Steps to Writing

Success

SPOTLIGHT ON

LITERACY & NUMERACY

Seven Steps to Writing has swept through all class-rooms from Years 2-6 at Newington Public School this Year. Seven Steps to Writing is a fun and engaging tool box of writing skills and building blocks to equip our stu-dents with the confidence and creativity to develop writ-ing masterpieces.

Each writing step is isolated and taught to en-able students to build a solid foundation to write narratives, informative and persuasive texts. Did you know that you only have seven seconds to grab your reader’s interest when you create a piece of writing?

Have a look at these fabulous work samples!

7 Steps to Writing - The Lost City Motionlessly, I saw a mysterious tunnel. I felt as cold as ice, as I explored the tunnel. I saw a bright light in the distance. It allured me to it. When I got to the end of the tunnel a rusty, old wooden door caught my attention. “ Where does this lead to ?”, I thought. Cautiously, I opened the door. I was nervous yet excited to see where the door would lead me. I jumped through the door and landed face first on the dirt. “ Where is this place ?” I thought to myself tying to get up. I looked around this mesmerising jungle. As I walked through this magical experi-ence ,I noticed a tree with a face carved out of it, sleeping peacefully in the forest. I thought to myself, “ Who could have lived here ?” and “ How did I get here ?” I walked around and noticed an emerald green lagoon. I went closer and closer but then I heard a “BANG!”. The portal door closed. “ There has to be a way out ?”, I thought. I ran as fast as lightening. After a while, I felt tired. I rested under a shady tall tree. A few minutes later, I fell asleep. I finally woke up and found myself trapped in a cave. I thought to myself, “The forest was alive !”. I heard a strange sound. I came closer to it and saw three snakes with emerald, hypnotic green eyes dangling from a branch. I looked down on the ground and saw a sharp knife. I thought to myself, “ What is this doing here ?”, looking surprised. I ran back to the lagoon. I went into the lagoon and saw a flickering light coming from the bottom of the emerald lagoon. I dived under to find where the light was coming from. I got closer and it appeared to be an emerald jewel. I grabbed it and found myself stuck in a cage. I thought to my-self, “could there be a key under the Jewel ?” I checked and found a key. I unlocked the cage and swam out to see three trees with doors on them. “ One of these doors must lead me home, I thought “. I chose the middle door and went through it. Luckily, I found myself back in the real world and I ran home. By: Mikayla 3G
