New School Year

Welcome to the start of the 2020 school year and the first edition for the year of ‘The Croak’. Welcome back to all our returning students and families and a very warm welcome to our many new students from Kinder-garten to Year 6 and their families.

On Staff Development Day (Tuesday 28 January) teachers were involved in professional learning and plan-ning sessions. Professional learning in Renaissance: Accelerated Reader and STAR took place to support teacher’s understanding and implementation of the data-driven personalised reading practice. During the morning session teachers and SLSOs participated in a Paint a Mate workshop while exploring the Creative Arts syllabus. During the afternoon grade teams met for 2020 planning.

Class Structure Our 2020 classes were formed yesterday after our draft plan was modified following the loss of further students. As I mentioned in an eNews message on Monday we only have enough students for 31 classes (based on the DoE formula), however for a number of strong educational reasons, with students at the centre of the decision, we will use the flexibility and autonomy we now have in our budget to fund a 32nd class teacher. Should we have extra enrolments during the year we may reach the required number of enrolments for the DoE to fund the position and our school funds can be re-directed to other programs. I will speak further about this at the P&C meeting next week.

Staffing Update

I will continue as Acting Principal in Term 1 until the position is permanently filled. The executive term for this term is:

• Relieving Assistant Principals - Mrs Maria Sorras (Kindergarten supervisor), Mrs Emma Gibson (Year 1 supervisor), Mrs Renee Organ (Fri Year 2 supervisor) and Mrs Sarah Garlick (Fri Year 3and 4 su-pervisor)

We welcome Mr Chris Hellier (5H) and Mr Nathan Sloan (4S) to our school as a temporary teachers. Wel-come back to Mrs Josie Barron who is returning part-time after maternity leave and to Mrs Miranda Andrews who has taught at NPS in previous years. We also welcome back these teachers who will fill temporary, con-tracted positions this year: Mrs Wendy Wilson (3W); Mrs Margarita Sozomenou (RFF and KDS); Mrs Zoe Fletcher (6F); Mrs Lynh Mai (RFF); Mrs Jasmin West (Lib); Ms Magdalene Farrar (2F); Ms Ferda Adar (4A); Mrs Margaret Mansfield (KM); Mrs Munira Mangerah (4MA); Mrs Eleni Gavrilos(2GO); Mrs Kim Daniels (LAST and EALD); Ms Zoe Donovan (4Z); Ms Aimee Celestino (5C); Ms Mary Chin (3C); Mrs Sally Stephen-son (1S) and Mrs Bertha Sun (6S). Mr Dean McManus and Mrs Lara Lambkin continue as our school coun-sellors this year. Our Administration team led by Mrs Josie Dickinson remains the same for Term 1.

Classroom and Grounds Maintenance During the holidays, regular maintenance tasks such as pest spraying, air-conditioning servicing and repairs and grounds up-keep were carried out. Carpet replacement in some demountables will be completed in the coming weeks.

P&C Meeting #1 Our first P&C meeting of the year is Tuesday 11 February starting at 7.30pm in the Library. Parents and carers ‘old’ and new to our school are welcome to attend the meeting. The Annual General Meeting, where elected positions are determined, is the second meeting which will be held on Tuesday 17 March. To vote at meetings parents must be financial members of the P&C Association.

Kiss and Drop Zones Thank you to the parents who take great care each day to drive and park safely around the school. Your diligence contributes greatly to the safe arrival and pick-up of our students. In the interest of the continued safety of our chil-dren and courtesy to other families, parents are asked not to park in the ‘NO PARKING’ areas at the front of the school. These are areas to drop off and pick up children with a 1-2 minute limit. Drivers are not permitted to leave their vehicles. Please use this area as a ‘Kiss and Drop’ zone. Your help in maintaining safety around our school is greatly appreciated.

Deputy Principal Stickers During the school day, teachers often send students to our office to show us the great work that they are doing in the classroom. It is important for students to be able to share their work and celebrate their improvements and success, and receive immediate feedback. Please ensure your child’s name is permanently and clearly labelled on school hats, jackets, lunch boxes, drink bottles and school bags.

School—Home Communication Productive and purposeful communication between parents/carers and the school is a vitally important component in the partnership of educating children. Our school has a number of ways to ensure parents/carers receive information about their child’s education and the school’s activities and achievements. These include: School Newsletter - The Croak: This is published fort-nightly and emailed to parents and carers. Please en-sure you have subscribed using your preferred email address. For those without email or internet you can request a printed copy of The Croak from the Admin-istration Office. School eNews - Year Lists: This comes via your email and also through a downloaded app to your smartphone or tablet computer. We publish relevant information for each grade, school announcements and updates. When you sign up please nominate for both the newsletter group and the Year group of your child (eg. Year 1). Hot Weather

Remind your child to protect themselves from sun and heat exposure while at school by: • wearing broad-brimmed hats in the playground to protect the face, neck and ears • playing in shaded areas, particularly during peak UVR times • drinking plenty of water • using 30+ broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen • reducing their exposure to the sun, wherever possible

School Visitors

Parents are reminded that ALL visitors to the school during the school day MUST report, upon entry to the school grounds, to the Office to SIGN IN and collect a VISITORS BADGE. (There is a different badge for Parent Helpers / Volunteers). The safety of all our students & staff require this rule. A Visitors Code is on display at our Office. A copy of our Visitors Policy & Volunteers Policy is on the school website. All volunteers are required by DOE to complete a Working With Children—Prohibited Employment Declara-tion (Appendix 5)

Tips For Packing Their Lunch Boxes

Pack food that is easy to open, easy to eat and not messy. Write their name on their lunch box, water bottle and any other containers. Include a frozen drink bottle to keep food cold. Wrap it in a tea towel in case it leaks. Use insulated lunch boxes or cooler bags. Avoid using plastic wrap because children find it hard to pull apart, paper bags are better for the environ-ment too. Pack tissues or paper around fruit so it won’t bruise. Remind your child to wash their hands before eating and use the toilet at recess and lunch.

Duty of Care—Supervision/Collection of Students at Home Time

Parents are asked to inform the school about changes to arrangements regarding who may or may not col-lect students from school. This applies particularly to our younger students. In most cases a known parent, relative, carer or friend collects children from school. However, if these arrangements change from day to day, it is requested that you inform the school or class teacher with regards to who is taking a child home. This should be in writing (email) or a phone call to our Admin Office. If your child is to be collected by a friend, neighbour or a relative who is not the usual person we need to know. Teachers endeavour to keep a check on which adults are collecting students but in the busy and congested time around 3.00pm it is important that teachers have the correct information. If the teacher is not sure about who is collecting a child we will endeavour to make contact with you to clari-fy the situation. Parents are asked to inform the Admin Office with regards to Before and After School Care ar-rangements. Which provider and which days your child is with a particular provider.

Cheese and Toastie - Canteen & Catering Operator

ABOUT US

I would like to introduce myself, Joan and my partner, Wilfred as your new school canteen operator, we are very excited to be operating Newington Public school's canteen starting the first day of Term one 2020. Both Wilfred and I are qualified chefs with over ten years of experience operating cafes and canteens. Cheese and Toastie is experienced in producing healthy food that looks good, tastes great and represents real value for money. We are committed to providing our students and staff with healthy, affordable food that meets a range of dietary and cul-tural needs. Our canteen operates in line with a number of government policies about the type of foods that are to be served in schools and the requirements for hygiene and food safety.

You will also find a huge variety of mouth-watering options on your new canteen menu. All our foods are prepared daily. We welcome new ideas and initiatives and work hard to accommodate requests. We cater for special die-tary requirements upon request and we are a nut free canteen.

Are you not sure about how you can celebrate your child's upcoming birthday? We make fresh and homemade cupcakes for your special birthday girl or boy to share their special day with their friends at school. Place your or-der within 72 hours and a gorgeous tray of cupcakes will be ready for pick up by the teacher. We also have a birthday bucket filled with frozen ice blocks for Students to share with their class on their special day.

The canteen is open each morning at 8.30am to students, staff and parents until 2 pm. We are using the online ordering service with Flexi Schools .
