All Stars Cricket With less than two weeks until the launch of Year 2 of All Stars Cricket, clubs across the East Region have so far accumulated over 1,900 participants with many clubs exceeding their 2017 participants. The teams have been working hard behind the scenes to ensure clubs, schools and all partners are delivering one final push to maximise sign up for this year. Nationally, the programme has over 38,000 participants and we smashed through the 2017 total a number of days ago. We really encourage clubs to get on board with further marketing to ensure all avenues are explored to get as many children taking up the programme in 2018. Clubs will be receiving direct emails once they exceed specific numbers to order more kit to support their programme, this kit can also be ordered directly from their Clubspark account. Any questions on this, please contact your relevant County Board contact. On 8 May, the ECB will once again be launching the ‘Bring a Friend’ campaign, encouraging 2018 participants to sign their friends up and bring them along to their first session. Clubs do have the capacity to opt out of this promotion and would have received direct communication from the ECB on how to do this. A big thank you to all clubs for their efforts and we look forward to another great summer of All Stars Cricket. All Stars Activator training All Stars Activator training has been happening across the four counties! On 11 April, 14 club volunteers were trained at Sir Frederic Osborn School in Welwyn Garden City and on 24 April, 26 new Activators were trained at Flitwick CC. For some people, it was their very first experience of coaching and for others a first look at what All Stars Cricket offers in comparison to more traditional cricket coaching that they had previously been involved in. The sessions were mainly to learn new games, skills and drills to pass onto the All Stars class of 2018! There was an emphasis on how to engage parents with activities as well as making activities progressive or regressive dependent on age/ ability. All Activators were keen to get stuck in and learn, and there’s no doubt they’ll do a fantastic job at their respective clubs. Pictured: Indoors at Sir Frederic Osborn and Outdoors at Flitwick COMMUNITIES Biggest inter-hub cricket festival in history! Over 100 young people, from Luton Wicketz Hubs came together for the biggest inter-hub cricket festival in Wicketz history on 3 April. Teams from the Farley Hill, High Town, Lutonian CC, Luton Town and Indians CC, Luton Caribbean CC and Hart Hill Hubs all played together on a day of competitive cricket at Denbigh High School. The festival was a fantastic celebration of Luton’s diverse ethnic communities coming together for a day of fun, with 19 different ethnicities, nationalities and faiths represented. The morning comprised a six-team round robin tournament for the younger participants, aged 8-11, with the older boys and girls helping out with umpiring, scoring and coaching. Each team had a parent or volunteer assisting them, as part of a drive to get parents and the rest of the wider community involved in Wicketz. There was some great cricket played throughout the morning, with the Challney Challengers emerging victorious. The afternoon session was a knockout style tournament of six teams for participants up to the age of 15, with the Challney Challengers again winning. One of the competing teams was formed of refugees from Afghanistan, who have been in the UK between one and four years, living in foster care in Luton. Wicketz Development Officer Amran Malik has been delivering weekly sessions in the Hart Hill area of Luton, aimed at supporting these refugees by helping them develop both cricket and life skills. This tournament was the first interaction they have had with other Wicketz participants, and they impressed with their cricketing skills as well as their sense of fair competition and teamwork. MCC Head Coach, Steve Kirby, was also at the cricket festival, with a member of the MCC Young Cricketers squad, Kashif Ali. Ali, a Luton native who is now training with the Kent CCC squad, inspired the youngsters with the story of his journey from the streets of Luton to being on the brink of being a professional cricketer. As his background and upbringing was similar to many of the participants, his story and message of working hard, self- belief and setting goals resonated with parents and youngsters alike. Two Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs), who regularly work with Amran at the hubs in Luton, stopped by to give their support to the festival, praising the effect that Wicketz has had on community cohesion and also commenting on the skill levels of the youngsters. PCSO Dan McHugh said: “I came across Wicketz a few months ago, and when I came down to a session I was gobsmacked by what I saw. One of the best things about Wicketz is that you have young people from all walks of life, different nationalities and religions all playing together.” For details about the Wicketz Project in Luton contact Amran Malik on 07493 867729 or email amran.malik@cricketeast. co.uk. Pictured: U15 winners Challney Challengers New community cricket hub in Peterborough Peterborough’s latest Community Cricket Hub has been launched at Bushfield Sports Centre on Tuesdays for Key Stage 3 pupils and includes attendees from Orton Waterville and Longueville Wards, which are amongst the most deprived in the City. Eleven boys and girls attended the first session on 24 April – all are completely new to the game. Two other Hubs have been running in the City for several months – at Gladstone Community Centre on Wednesdays and the Academy Hall and Focus Community Centre, Dogsthorpe on Thursdays. Pictured: Easter activities at the Dogsthorpe Hub PLAY Honours Boards 2018 Season The ever-popular Play-Cricket Batting and Bowling Honours Boards were launched again on Wednesday 18 April for the 2018 season. We are still confident of being able to field three over-60s sides over the coming season but are still looking for umpires and scorers, particularly for the new team which will be playing on a Thursday throughout may, June and July. If you can volunteer your services, you will be most welcome. And more new players are required too – the more the merrier. The fixture list for the coming season is on the Play-Cricket website. If you can help, please contact Graeme Presswell on 07946 863262 or at graeme@presshoo. co.uk, or Max Hill on 01767 681469 or at amaxhill@outlook. com The Beds Youth League started its matches on 29 April, after bad weather damaged early season preparation of both players and pitches. The U9s and U11s continue to play League games on Sundays usually, with U13s scheduled for Tuesdays and U15s on Thursdays or Fridays. New Fixture Secretaries have been appointed to deal with re-arranged matches when the weather is bad, and the League has supplied incrediballs for use in U11 Development and U9 divisions. Follow the fixtures HERE. PEOPLE New scorebox in memory of former player Frogmore Cricket Club in Hertfordshire, which was established in 1850, has officially unveiled their new scorebox built with funds raised in memory of former player Nick Medlin who was tragically killed while serving as a prison officer on the Isle of Wight in December 2016. A man is currently serving 6.5 years for his manslaughter. Nick’s widow Dani and his sons – current players Joe and Charlie – donated the funds to the building of a new electronic scoreboard which they officially unveiled on Sunday 29 April. Unfortunately, rain put paid to the accompanying cricket match, but the club have arranged a T20 game for later in the season in honour of Nick which will become a regular fixture on their calendar. Pictured: Nick’s wife and two sons with his scorebox Peter Garratt Memorial Service Cricket East was deeply saddened to hear that Peter Garratt, Life member of Eversholt Cricket Club in Bedfordshire passed away on 4 April 2018. Peter’s 60-year Club association made him a well-known and respected figure in local cricket and beyond. He will be missed by all that knew him. A Memorial Service and Celebration of Peter Garratt’s Life will take place at All Saints Church, Ridgmont on Friday 11 May 2018 at 1.30pm. Refreshments will follow at Eversholt Village Hall. Donations, if desired, will be shared equally between All Saints Church, Ridgmont and Eversholt Cricket Club. These can be made via www.memorygiving.com or passed in person to Paul, David or James Garratt. Eversholt Cricket Club hope you can join them to celebrate Peter’s life and his outstanding contribution to the Club over many years. Huntingdonshire CCC New President Huntingdonshire CCC is excited to announce Charlotte Edwards CBE as their new President. Huntingdonshire CCC Chairman Adrian Cade said: “Not only is Charlotte a fantastic role model for all our up and coming players to aspire to and follow in her footsteps, she is a Huntingdonshire woman, player and supporter. I’m sure everyone knows what she has achieved in the game of cricket worldwide and how she has conducted herself on and off the field at all levels; playing hard, but always within the ‘Spirit Of Cricket’ – the perfect combination. “I grew up playing cricket with Clive, Charlotte’s Dad so have known her all her life, and enjoyed watching her meteoric rise to fame, though she was always keen to follow Dad in the early years to score, or on one occasion play as our 11th (man) in the Ramsey CC league winning side of 1992 at age 13! “I was obviously really chuffed that Charlotte accepted our invitation to take up the role as President and I know whenever possible she will be involved in club affairs, by offering her opinion or experience as Huntingdonshire build a club that all the young players in the county will once again be proud to represent. “Welcome home Lottie!” New Community Cricket Coach George Darlow has joined Cricket East as a community cricket coach on a six-month contract to support the delivery of our Education (Chance to Shine) and Community (Wicketz, Summer Camps and Chance to Shine Street) programmes over the busy summer period. George has worked as a sessional coach as part of the schools’ programmes in previous years as well as supporting some of the other community programmes. Ben Wallis, Head of Community Cricket, said: “It’s great to have someone of George’s calibre join us for the summer to support our delivery team. He is an experienced schools coach who has received some good feedback in previous years and is looking to develop his coaching moving forward. He will really support the delivery of our programmes over the summer months.” Foreword So, it’s finally arrived! All the winter and pre-season work has been completed and we can now look forward to playing some cricket, despite the horrific weather that we have had over the last month or so. Looking forward to the season, we are again focusing on ‘Getting the Game on’ encouraging the cricket network to work together in supporting each other to make sure as many games are played as possible, at whatever level, so that the game can continue to inspire the current and next generations of cricket enthusiasts. This season will also see the introduction of a number of different formats at junior levels as part of the ECB’s pilot programme as well as the second year of ‘All Stars Cricket’ – the ECB’s entry programme for 5-8-year-olds, giving children the best possible first experience of the game. Women’s Softball Cricket is also back again, albeit in a slightly different format and the newly branded Vitality U19 Club T20 will continue to encourage those slightly older teenagers to continue playing the game. On behalf of Cricket East, I would like to wish all players, clubs, schools, officials, grounds staff, administrators, volunteers, league and other competitions, all the best for the 2018 season and thank you for all that you do to support our wonderful game. The teams have been working hard behind the scenes to ensure clubs, schools and all partners are delivering one fi nal push to maximise sign up for this year. Nationally, the programme has over 38,000 participants and we smashed through the 2017 total a number of days ago.

We really encourage clubs to get on board with further marketing to ensure all avenues are explored to get as many children taking up the programme in 2018. Clubs will be receiving direct emails once they exceed specifi c numbers to order more kit to support their programme, this kit can also be ordered directly from their Clubspark account. Any questions on this, please contact your relevant County Board contact.

On 8 May, the ECB will once again be launching the ‘Bring a Friend’ campaign, encouraging 2018 participants to sign their friends up and bring them along to their fi rst session. Clubs do have the capacity to opt out of this promotion and would have received direct communication from the ECB on how to do this.

A big thank you to all clubs for their efforts and we look forward to another great summer of All Stars Cricket.

All Stars Activator trainingAll Stars Activator training has been happening across the four counties! On 11 April, 14 club volunteers were trained at Sir Frederic Osborn School in Welwyn Garden City and on 24 April, 26 new Activators were trained at Flitwick CC.

For some people, it was their very fi rst experience of coaching and for others a fi rst look at what All Stars Cricket offers in comparison to more traditional cricket coaching that they had previously been involved in. The sessions were mainly to learn new games, skills and drills to pass onto the All Stars class of 2018! There was an emphasis on how to engage parents with activities as well as making activities progressive or regressive dependent on age/ability.

All Activators were keen to get stuck in and learn, and there’s no doubt they’ll do a fantastic job at their respective clubs.

COMMUNITIESBiggest inter-hub cricket festival in history!Over 100 young people, from Luton Wicketz Hubs came together for the biggest inter-hub cricket festival in Wicketz history on 3 April.

Wicketz Development Offi cer Amran Malik has been delivering weekly sessions in the Hart Hill area of Luton, aimed at supporting these refugees by helping them develop both cricket and life skills. This tournament was the fi rst interaction they have had with other Wicketz participants, and they impressed with their cricketing skills as well as their sense of fair competition and teamwork.

As his background and upbringing was similar to many of the participants, his story and message of working hard, self-belief and setting goals resonated with parents and youngsters alike.

Two Police Community Support Offi cers (PCSOs), who regularly work with Amran at the hubs in Luton, stopped by to give their support to the festival, praising the effect that Wicketz has had on community cohesion and also commenting on the skill levels of the youngsters. PCSO Dan McHugh said: “I came across Wicketz a few months ago, and when I came down to a session I was gobsmacked by what I saw. One of the best things about Wicketz is that you have young people from all walks of life, di erent nationalities and religions all playing together.”

PEOPLENew scorebox in memory of former playerFrogmore Cricket Club in Hertfordshire, which was established in 1850, has offi cially unveiled their new scorebox built with funds raised in memory of former player Nick Medlin who was tragically killed while serving as a prison offi cer on the Isle of Wight in December 2016. A man is currently serving 6.5 years for his manslaughter. Nick’s widow Dani and his sons – current players Joe and Charlie – donated the funds to the building of a new electronic scoreboard which they offi cially unveiled on Sunday 29 April. Unfortunately, rain put paid to the accompanying cricket match, but the club have arranged a T20 game for later in the season in honour of Nick which will become a regular fi xture on their calendar.

Huntingdonshire CCC New PresidentHuntingdonshire CCC is excited to announce Charlotte Edwards CBE as their new President.

Huntingdonshire CCC Chairman Adrian Cade said: “Not only is Charlotte a fantastic role model for all our up and coming players to aspire to and follow in her footsteps, she is a Huntingdonshire woman, player and supporter. I’m sure everyone knows what she has achieved in the game of cricket worldwide and how she has conducted herself on and o the fi eld at all levels; playing hard, but always within the ‘Spirit Of Cricket’ – the perfect combination.

“I was obviously really chu ed that Charlotte accepted our invitation to take up the role as President and I know whenever possible she will be involved in club a airs, by o ering her opinion or experience as Huntingdonshire build a club that all the young players in the county will once again be proud to represent.

“Welcome home Lottie!”

New Community Cricket CoachGeorge Darlow has joined Cricket East as a community cricket coach on a six-month contract to support the delivery of our Education (Chance to Shine) and Community (Wicketz, Summer Camps and Chance to Shine Street) programmes over the busy summer period. He will really support the delivery of our programmes over the summer months.”

ForewordSo, it’s fi nally arrived! All the winter and pre-season work has been completed and we can now look forward to playing some cricket, despite the horrifi c weather that we have had over the last month or so. Looking forward to the season, we are again focusing on ‘Getting the Game on’ encouraging the cricket network to work together in supporting each other to make sure as many games are played as possible, at whatever level, so that the game can continue to inspire the current and next generations of cricket enthusiasts. This season will also see the introduction of a number of different formats at junior levels as part of the ECB’s pilot programme as well as the second year of ‘All Stars Cricket’ – the ECB’s entry programme for 5-8-year-olds, giving children the best possible fi rst experience of the game. Women’s Softball Cricket is also back again, albeit in a slightly different format and the newly branded Vitality U19 Club T20 will continue to encourage those slightly older teenagers to continue playing the game. On behalf of Cricket East, I would like to wish all players, clubs, schools, offi cials, grounds staff, administrators, volunteers, league and other competitions, all the best for the 2018 season and thank you for all that you do to support our wonderful game.

Ben Wallis, Head of Community Cricket

Smashing Boundaries Girlguiding Anglia Girlguiding Anglia has worked in partnership with the Essex County Cricket Board to put together a Smashing Boundaries Girl Guide Badge to introduce cricket to members across the Region. The variety of activities mean that girls can fi nd out about different aspects of cricket in a fun and informative way.

Some units trialled the badge in 2017 and it was released in April 2018. Essex County Cricket Board’s Women & Girls Manager Natalie Samaranayake said: “We have enjoyed working with Girlguiding Anglia to deliver ‘Smashing Boundaries’. With the recent success of the England Women in the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup and the growth of the Kia Super League, girls can now truly aspire to amazing sporting achievements. We hope this badge gives them a taste of what cricket can o er; a fun, friendly activity that can be played by anyone of all abilities. Girlguiding Anglia provide great opportunities to their members and we are honoured to be working with such an organisation.”
