All Stars Cricket 2018 As the All Stars Roadshows and the new recommended junior formats for 2018 continue, we have seen a really positive uptake and feedback from our community clubs. We now have over 150 clubs committed to deliver All Stars in 2018, over 40 clubs prepared to deliver a Women’s Soft Ball Festival; thank you to all who have attended. At present, the All Stars programme is very much in the planning phase for 2018 and our Cricket East team are working hard to support clubs with the initial planning of the programme. Our work with Chance to Shine continues to grow and we are booking many schools in for 2018, to support our All Stars centres to maximise the uptake of children aged 5-8. On 23 November, we supported the work of Stevenage Sporting Futures in training over 20 PE and School Sports Apprentices who are now All Stars Activators and can bring to life the programme in their host schools, as well as encourage their children to take up the game. If you are interested in running All Stars in 2018 and have yet to contact your Community Club Manager or National Product Executive, please get in touch as soon as possible. A Taylor-made year! Eaton Socon player Matt Taylor has had a fantastic year of cricket! He made his Minor Counties Unicorn championship debut earlier this year aged 17. This included keeping to a high-quality spin attack including Monty Panesar and Tom Brett. Matt was part of the winning team in the NatWest U19 Club T20 Competition and then selected as one of the 22 Most Valuable Players in the East Region. He was selected onto the Oxford MCCU Academy winter squad. Being the youngest in the squad he has a way to go to get his first-class debut but he will be kept busy with his Academy training. He has also been offered a trial at Durham CCC, which will take place early December. Cricket East wishes Matt all the best in his cricketing career. Pictured: Matt (right) with English Cricketer James Anderson East Anglian Premier League Umpire of the Year Congratulations to Steve Ross who was recently named East Anglian Premier League (EAPL) Umpire of the Year at the Umpires Post Season Meeting held at Bury St Edmunds CC. It is awarded to the Umpire finishing top of the merit list, based upon match markings from Captains throughout the season. Steve is Chairman of Hunts Association of Cricket Officials and has just finished his ninth season on the EAPL and he is also on the MCCA (Minor Counties panel) and the ECB “D” List (First Class County - Second XI Championship). He was one of the first umpires in the UK to achieve ECB ACO Umpire Level 3 status in 2012 and he is an Umpire tutor, mentor, coach and observer. The Chance to Shine School is currently playing an Intercontinental School Ashes Match against Blackwater State School in Queensland, Australia! Scarning scored 102 for their first innings and Blackwater replied with 203, so, a tall order for the second innings (which will take place as we go to press). Follow the Challenge on Twitter @ScarningPrimary. Kwik Cricket in Nissan Ampthill Town Cricket Club recently participated in a town twinning opportunity coaching cricket to school children in the South West of France. Six members of the club set off on their adventure on 8 October to coach 4 classes of 8 to 9 year olds; children that write letters to Ampthill’s Firs and Russell Lower Schools. Patrick Saux, Chairman of the Nissan Twinning Committee said: “Thank you to Ampthill Town Cricket Club coaches for sharing your knowledge, enthusiasm and dedication to the game with our youngsters. Our old rugby pitch had never seen anything like it before! All the feedback I got has been extremely positive. The kids, the teachers and the parents who participated, all had a great time. We also want to thank you for your generosity in giving all the equipment to the school, it will be put to good use.” Read Club Treasurer Ian Smith’s full report HERE. Foreword The frost is starting to bite, the squares are all tucked up and many of us are now looking in hope and expectation of a result in Oz over the winter! This, however, is one of our busiest times and the ECB regional team along with the Cricket East team and the other County Boards in the East have been in full-on planning mode for 2018. I’d like to thank all those clubs who have been to our Roadshows over the last 2 months to hear about 2018. The highlights have been All Stars Year 2, Junior League Format recommendations and the success and plans for 2018 for Women’s Soft Ball Cricket. I am delighted to say that we will see a growth in clubs running All Stars in Year 2, we will see more Soft Ball Cricket across the region and a number of junior leagues have already agreed to pilot the pitch and format recommendations suggested in the recent roadshows. This all bodes well for an exciting and very successful 2018 as we continue to try and grow the game and create a lifelong love of our game across the region. Finally, I would like to thank each and every one of you for your contribution and the County Board and Cricket East Staff for their input and tireless hard work over the last 12 months. Cricket is a wonderful community and across all the network and to you and your families, I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Matt Blakeley, Regional Head of Participation & Growth (East) Luton school wins recognition at national cricket awards Congratulations to Denbigh Primary School, Luton who was named Primary School of the Year at the Chance to Shine Annual Awards on Tuesday 14 November. Denbigh were recognised for their hard work supporting grassroots cricket and received their award from MCC Chief Executive Derek Brewer at Lord’s Cricket Ground. The Chance to Shine Annual Awards, supported by NatWest, celebrates clubs, individuals and schools who help to spread the power of cricket and make the charity such a success. The judging panel noted that Denbigh had shown a complete belief in the impact that the power of cricket can have on their children. They take advantage of every opportunity to give the pupils experiences that will help them to develop as students but most importantly as people. The enthusiasm for cricket has spread throughout the school and has the complete support of everyone from the Headteacher to the parents. The pupils are seeing a marked improvement in academic achievement, something which the staff attribute to the success of the school’s sporting programmes. Chance to Shine has been working since 2005 to reverse the decline of cricket in state schools. By providing coaching in schools and extra-curricular opportunities, the charity has reached more than 3.5 million young people, 46% of whom are girls, in over 14,000 states schools across the country. For the full story, click HERE and see Denbigh’s nomination video HERE. Pictured: (L-R) Alan Hodges, Musanna, Derek Brewer, Nafissa, Ahsan Rosanna wins Young Leader Award Congratulations to Rosanna Brown form Copleston High School, Suffolk for winning the Chance to Shine Young Leader of the Year Award 2018. She received the award from Devon Malcolm at the recent Chance to Shine Annual Awards at Lord’s. Rosanna was commended for her ability to help run her school cricket sessions, manage the school’s girls’ cricket team, and encourage others to get involved and develop their skills. On a personal level, this has helped Rosanna develop her confidence which has further encouraged her to follow a career path in teaching or coaching. After her nomination video was shown, Rosanna received a standing ovation. A well- deserved award Rosanna! Chance to Shine curriculum training Chance to Shine coaches from across the eastern region gathered in November to train in and experience the new Chance to Shine curriculum that they will deliver in primary schools in 2018. Two action-packed days explored the “real coaching pack” designed in partnership with Create Development (www. createdevelopment.co.uk). The focus is on coaches working with 4-8-year-old school children. The coaches were put through their paces as they discovered the impact of communication, creating a learning environment/culture, what is healthy competition and planning activities to include the defined Fundamental Movement Skills. The next wave of coaches will receive their training in January 2018. New Schools Programme The New Schools Programme has been developed by Chance to Shine to share with all schools. It is a powerful repository of free resources for teachers and their schools. Cricket East and Chance to Shine believe that cricket can be a powerful and lasting component of a young person’s learning and development, in turn bringing wider educational and social benefits. Cricket East’s Chance to Shine & Education team are contacting schools to introduce them to the new programme and work with them to develop a programme of activities to give children a great first experience of cricket, build the sustainability of cricket within schools by giving teachers the confidence to deliver their own sessions, and create a viable pathway to help children migrate to playing cricket within our clubs and communities. To find out more about the Chance to Shine programme in schools, please contact Damianne Redpath on 01480 276 619 or at [email protected]. To view the New Schools Programme video, click HERE. Mini Olympics Cricket East delivered taster sessions to over 900 Key Stage 1 children from 21 schools as part of the Stevenage Sporting Futures Team Mini Olympics Festival. The festival, hosted over 3 days in November, was aimed at children in KS1 to give them a taster of different sports with the main emphasis on having as much FUN as possible. Cricket East certainly delivered a FUN taster session playing bat balance relays, target batting towards stumps and catching games with beanbags. Each child got to experience a small snippet of All Stars Cricket and left with an ASC bracelet! All Stars Cricket 2018As the All Stars Roadshows and the new recommended junior formats for 2018 continue, we have seen a really positive uptake and feedback from our community clubs.

A Taylor-made year!Eaton Socon player Matt Taylor has had a fantastic year of cricket! Being the youngest in the squad he has a way to go to get his fi rst-class debut but he will be kept busy with his Academy training. He has also been offered a trial at Durham CCC, which will take place early December. Cricket East wishes Matt all the best in his cricketing career.

Kwik Cricket in Nissan

Ampthill Town Cricket Club recently participated in a town twinning opportunity coaching cricket to school children in the South West of France.

ForewordThe frost is starting to bite, the squares are all tucked up and many of us are now looking in hope and expectation of a result in Oz over the winter!

Luton school wins recognition at national cricket awardsCongratulations to Denbigh Primary School, Luton who was named Primary School of the Year at the Chance to Shine Annual Awards on Tuesday 14 November.

Chance to Shine curriculum training

Chance to Shine coaches from across the eastern region gathered in November to train in and experience the new Chance to Shine curriculum that they will deliver in primary schools in 2018. Two action-packed days explored the “real coaching pack” designed in partnership with Create Development (www.createdevelopment.co.uk). The focus is on coaches working with 4-8-year-old school children. The coaches were put through their paces as they discovered the impact of communication, creating a learning environment/culture, what is healthy competition and planning activities to include the defi ned Fundamental Movement Skills. The next wave of coaches will receive their training in January 2018.

New Schools ProgrammeThe New Schools Programme has been developed by Chance to Shine to share with all schools. It is a powerful repository of free resources for teachers and their schools. Cricket East and Chance to Shine believe that cricket can be a powerful and lasting component of a young person’s learning and development, in turn bringing wider educational and social benefi ts. Cricket East’s Chance to Shine & Education team are contacting schools to introduce them to the new programme and work with them to develop a programme of activities to give children a great fi rst experience of cricket, build the sustainability of cricket within schools by giving teachers the confi dence to deliver their own sessions, and create a viable pathway to help children migrate to playing cricket within our clubs and communities. To fi nd out more about the Chance to Shine programme in schools, please contact Damianne Redpath on 01480 276 619 or at [email protected]. To view the New Schools Programme video, click HERE.

Mini OlympicsCricket East delivered taster sessions to over 900 Key Stage 1 children from 21 schools as part of the Stevenage Sporting Futures Team Mini Olympics Festival.
